4 out of 5 stars Good reference... .......2007-08-11

if you have had some language training in Moroccan Arabic or classical/standard Arabic. It's otherwise a bit difficult to use, especially if it's your first exposure to the language. One added benefit is the book's two short sections on French and Berber phrases for the traveler.

4 out of 5 stars Good Phrasebook but needed some help........2007-07-23

The phrasebook was very helpful when I went over to Morocco for vacation. But before I left I had to have my friend from Morocco help me to make sure I was pronouncing them correctly. But for the most part it was helpful and very useful.

3 out of 5 stars Initially seemed great, but turned out NOT to be useful.......2007-02-02

I bought it with a great enthusiasm but when I arrived at Morocco I discovered that the book is not useful for some reasons. I traveled around Morocco on bicycle for 2 weeks but learnt only very few phrases from this book. I suspect something is wrong with the structure of this phrasebook.

5 out of 5 stars Zuina Bezzaf - MUST READ BOOK!.......2005-05-24

This book was GREAT! It's the best one out there, and it's a Fantastic price. So much information, helpful phrases, easy word spelling for prnounciation. This book was so helpful and yet so simple, it takes you from basic topics such as "Religion" "People" "Places" "Transportation" "Feelings" and so many other topics. This is a must read book. And it's so small, you can bring it anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars The best choice (of 2) for travel needs and tourists..........2005-02-16

Okay, so there are really only two books out there that I know of which will teach you anything about Moroccan Arabic: this handy little pocket-sized phrase book and the big, green, more academic text called "A Basic Course in Moroccan Arabic." The choice between the two is clear, with the Lonely Planet book being the obvious choice for the thousands of us who just plan on going to Morocco for a short visit as a tourist or on business. The other book would probably be a better choice if you plan on living in Morocco and need to know the grammar and truly gain some in-depth knowledge, though the LP phrasebook would probably be a good place to start anyway.

This "Moroccan Arabic Phrasebook" has most of what you will need for a short junket, with the usual smattering of vocabulary on food, clothes, medical problems, directions, hotels and airports. To add some criticism, since no book is perfect, I would mention that the glossary is only English-->Moroccan, so if someone tells you a word in "darija" you will have no way to look it up and find its equivalent in English. I really don't see the point of putting everything in Arabic script either, since Moroccan Arabic is never written down and the target audience won't be reading anything in Arabic anyway! Maybe just including a description of the alphabet in an appendix would suffice. As usual, there are always some things you need but cannot find (typically "where is the bathroom?", though I think LP included that this time!)...

I had a great time with some Moroccans at a party using the phrasebook: None of them spoke any French or English, so I played charades by acting like I was one of the animals listed in the book and I knew that they were guessing the right animal, since I had the name in the book in front of me. Cheezy-sounding, but believe me, when you have no way to communicate with anyone around you, desperation sets in! Which is where this great phrasebook will come in handy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good resource.......2007-07-16

We used this book before and during our volunteer trip to Kenya.
It's a great resource, helps a lot, has all the basic things you wanna know (actually much more than you're going to need for a short trip), as well as slangs and even a few surprises (what to say in very specific situations, like when you're drunk or having sex (I'm guessing if they put this on the book, it must be because people asked for it)).
There are a few phrases they recommend I found out nobody uses anymore, and a few others that are used by people in the coast, but not by people in Nairobi area or other parts of the country, for example.
But still, I recommend it.
It's very small, fits in your pocket.
But there's so much information you really need to do your homework, study it before your trip, and mark the pages that interest you.

5 out of 5 stars Swahili: Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-06-18

For a compact book on Swahili this is the best I've seen. The contents of this little gem were easily divided into useful and practical sections, covering a broader use of the language than I've come across in other similar type books. Each section was uniquely and clearly identifiable allowing faster access to put your fingertips on the words or phrases you need. This book also succeeds in helping the reader obtain a basic yet concrete understanding of the Swahili language where other similar books have attempted but failed.

5 out of 5 stars Very well built up - simple to use!.......2007-03-21

This course to teach yourself Swahili is easy for anybody - all you need is to take time and study.

5 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive resource.......2007-03-19

This small hand-sized book is an excellent resource. Sections are seperated by practical categories (like food, social, and practical). Very easy to read, and really has everything you would need to get around.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to have! .......2007-01-01

I had this guide when I went to Kenya, and I highly recommend it! It was very useful when I got very ill and needed to explain to a Swahili speaking doctor what was wrong with me. I also used it when I'd go to the Masai Markets and I always got a much better deal when I'd barter in Swahili. The Kenyans can speak English, but they appreciate it when you try to speak to them in Swahili.

I loved this guide so much I am buying copies for the members of my family who will be joining me for a holiday in Kenya this coming year.

It's an absolute must for any traveler!

Voices woven through staccato rhythms lead you to a narrow alley. Laughter flows from beneath a door. It opens to a kaleidoscope of sound and colour, led by an azmari singing a song of invitation. A waiter smiles as you glance in the book — you order a bira and some ocholoni. The day had started with a mountain top view of the Blue Nile and now the vibrant city nightlife takes you in…

4 out of 5 stars Communicatinig in Ethiopia.......2007-09-18

This is a helpful phrasebook, usable without any previous knowledge of Amharic. As I am not a native English speaker, I appreciate the way the sounds used are described in the beginning of the book. It is well organized, with different, logical, chapters; i.e. the possibility to find the phrase I am looking for in the chapter where I think it should be is high. The dictionary part is short (as it of course has to be), and I really miss "please" as a word in the dictionary.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-04-14

I'm married to an Ethiopian and have found this book to be a lifesaver each and every time I go to Ethiopia. The book gets you close enough to the correct pronunciation that anyone can half way understand you and correct your pronunciation of the words. Although Tigrinyan's are now in power Amharic is still the national language of Ethiopia so it's better to learn Amharic if you plan on speaking to anyone in Ethiopia.

4 out of 5 stars Amharic usefulness depends on where you are.......2006-03-16

Actually I didn't use the book very much, as my surroundings were almost all English or Oromo-speaking. Before spending much time on a learning a language to use in Ethiopia, be sure to check out the location. Since the Amhara's are no longer the dominant tribe, their language may be less useful. Tigrayans are now in power and Oromo are the largest language group.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Ethiopian Amharic Phrasebook .......2005-11-24

This book is excellent! I don't understand some of the reviews.
It is a rare book that promotes Ethiopia and its culture. It is intended for foreign travellers to Ethiopia and not for Ethiopians who live abroad. I have travelled to Ethiopia with this book and found it very useful. I don't know what I would have done without it. I found the cultural info very useful. I think no other phrasebook offers this kind of info.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Useless!.......2005-01-06

This guide is terrible if your goal is to speak Amharic. The Achilles heel of this book is that there are no accent marks on the ethiopian phrases. If you read what is in the book there is no way you will come close to saying anything intelligible. On the positive side, all of my Ethiopian friends found this book very helpful for learning English.

The marinated octopus begs description. Opposite, beautiful Elektra smiles but offers nothing. John nods and waits for the next smile. And so it goes, nod, smile, nod, smile. As another love affair fades with the sunset, John silently laments his lack of foresight.

3 out of 5 stars Currency is out of date!.......2005-03-19

I just purchased this book and am dissapointed that the currency is out of date. While the book seems like a great one to take with you (small in size), to me it seems pointless to bring one along that has drachmas not euros in it.

I only want to take ONE book with me when I travel, and this one could not be it since I would need a seperate one to understand how to converse in Greek regarding euros. Otherwise, it is set up very well and I agree with the other reviewers... I'll be first in line if they publish an updated version! But for now I am taking this one back.

5 out of 5 stars Modern, Updated and Amusing Phrasebook.......2003-03-03

I am Greek-American and can speak both English and Greek. I bought this book for my amusement and was surprised that the book, unlike other phrase books, is a bit more modern as to phrase choice and very well-organized. I would suggest purchasing it, yet, keep in mind that in Greece most touristy places speak Greek and most Greeks under 35 know English in some form (as do other parts of Europe). Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad -- if you never use the toilet.......2001-02-24

Great book except that it lacks the most important phrase to learn when travelling abroad -- "Where's the toilet?" So before you go to Greece and get yourself in an uncomfortable situation, I suggest you scribble the following into the inside cover of your phrasebook: "Pu e toualeta?" You can thank me later. Another problem I found was the dictionary in the back, which lacks some essential travel words like "ticket". Not nearly as good as Lonely Planet's other phrasebooks.

        Book Description

This book is completely different from the first book of the saga, "As It Is On Mars". That first book tells how a few determined survivors of failed Mars missions unintentionally ended up founding the first human settlement on Mars, after a monumental struggle with the planet. This second book continues the saga, but with the settlers now in an entirely different struggle, this time against other human beings trying to get control of their lands and resources.

Readers who have not read the first book can easily continue with the tale. The essentials of the earlier story, most of which took place ten years before this latest story, are related in the beginning chapters of this second book.

The story begins with reaction in high places to NASA's stunning discovery, in August 2044, that survivors of Earth's first manned missions to Mars are still alive. The survivors, thought to have died of starvation six years earlier, are even prospering, and have built an impressive settlement in a unique sanctuary in western Kasei Valley.

Then comes the realization that the settlers are sitting on an enormously valuable resource, worth trillions of dollars. Envious eyes are soon monitoring the settlement, as the U.S. and E.U. draw up rival plans for low-cost missions to Mars to rescue the settlers, and win control of their lands.

A NASA mission gets to Mars first, at the next opposition, in 2046, but a nuclear accident prevents it from landing. This bad luck for NASA gives the E.U. its chance, and the European Space Agency, ESA, quickly wins approval for a rescue mission for the next opposition, in 2048.

An alarmed U.S. President responds by authorizing an armed Air Force mission to Mars, to get there a month before the Europeans. This secret military mission is delayed, unfortunately, and the ESA mission gets to Mars first, after all, in July of 2048. The Air Force mission is in hot pursuit though, just one month behind.

The tale on Mars opens, in Chapter Two, with the arrival of the ESA mission. Five of the crew of twelve are military personnel, armed with nanoguns. The others are harmless engineers and scientists. There are five women among the twelve.

One of the military people is the mission's leader, Captain Richard Derk, a ruthless aristocrat and strategy mastermind, charged with getting the settlers off the planet. Derk's personal ambition is to become governor of Europe's first Mars colony, and the man in charge of exploiting the trillion-dollar resource on an enormous scale.

Derk's arrival triggers an escalating confrontation with the settlers, starting with a restless cold war. But neither side is prepared for the bizarre way the conflict eventually unfolds, as the planet also takes part, in its own special way. Nor are the settlers prepared for the devilry Derk is capable of.

The scenes are set in the spectacular terrain of the huge Kasei Valley complex, some of them familiar places from the earlier novel. Others are forbidding and treacherous, like the great labyrinth of chaotic terrain in western Kasei Valley.

Outnumbered, outgunned, and outmaneuvered by Derk, the settlers' resistance would seem to be hopeless, as the initial cold war degenerates into a hot war, and it becomes obvious that the settlers desperately need help. But where can they get it? The U.S. military mission, rapidly nearing Mars, is out to seize their lands too!

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable and stimulating read.......2003-06-08

It was a pleasure to read Give Us This Mars, the second book in a series that deals with the great heights of achievement human beings are capable of reaching. The books illustrate well how each giant step for mankind is generally the accumulated results of the many efforts of a small group of amazing and inspiring individuals. In Book One, the three heroes of the story ended up with no choice but to attempt the first human settlement on Mars, and after many years of hard and frustrating work, they succeed in developing an efficient, prosperous and fully functioning Mars settlement.

This Martian settlement, thought impossible by people on Earth, is now, of course, the subject of considerable envy, especially on the part of the great powers. The satisfying theme of how the decent little people, with limited resources in a very difficult environment, attempt to outsmart the powerful and unethical big guys, is played out to its fullest in Give Us This Mars. The characters in the story are well developed and the plot unfolds smoothly, but with many unexpected twists and turns. Also, the necessary science in the story is clearly explained, and the author's understanding of the laws of nature enhances the flow of the plot. All in all, Give Us This Mars is a very enjoyable and stimulating read.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Wild West.......2003-03-16

For those of you who have read the first book this one is very different. The first book was about surviving the elements of Mars and how to setup a living facility on Mars. The sequel is an action packed thriller that reminded me of the old Wild West. The bad guys arrive into a small town and try to take over. There are [weapons] and everything. Lots of twists and turns that kept me in suspence throughout the entire read.

5 out of 5 stars An Unexpectedly Thrilling Read.......2003-03-10

I am a member of a book club of twelve, and we try to read as diverse a selection of books as possible. That includes SF books, which few of us would read without a prod.

"Give Us This Mars" is as good a page turner as I have ever read. Reading it was like being on a long and wonderful visit to Mars. I began on a Saturday morning and could not put it down. I continued until night, when I was forced to stop, with poor Astrid clinging to life by a thread. Next day brought more excitement, with Don giving me a big surprise. What happens is brilliant.

This unexpectedly thrilling read took me into a world of political intrigue, armed conflict, power politics at the highest level, and the physics of trebuchets (medieval artillery, which I understood even though I am not a scientist), with a light sprinkling of Zen philosophy.. All this combines to give a futuristic reenactment of events that took place in the years following the discovery of the Americas by Columbus. The way the trebuchet comes into the plot is not what you might think.

I got a sense of the alien landscape of Mars, and the experience of the dangers of Mars made for exciting reading. At times I even experienced an emotional involvement with the characters and events in the story. The author is usually thorough in his narration of events, but on occasion he shows sophistication, in leaving out the details of events that are best left to the reader's imagination, such as a long journey Captain Derk and his military go on to carry out a surprise attack. There is not much technology/science detail in the story, and if you do not have a science background, I would recommend reading Book Two before Book One. You had better be ready for the directions north, south, east, and west, which are common in the story. I needed the maps and diagram at the end to help me keep track.

There is a discussion early in the book between Derk and Denise about land ownership on Mars. They have very opposing ways of looking at how land/territory is acquired and retained, and it explains many conflicts on Earth. I thought it was the most thought provoking part of the story. The book is definitely not far-fetched science fiction, and this non science-fiction reader closed it with a satisfied feeling, and many things to ponder. Did I see hints in the book of an interesting installment to follow?

5 out of 5 stars Give Me Liberty and Mars or Give Me Death!.......2003-03-09

Thomas W. Cronin, author of As It Is On Mars, gives lovers of Mars fiction an excellent sequel in Give Us This Mars. The political and suspenseful elements are still there, but Cronin has ramped up the action in this second book. In Give Us This Mars, Denise Lavoisier, John Erway, their two children born on Mars, and Ichiro Sato have not only survived the decade since the first ill-fated manned mission to Mars, but have thrived. The United States and the European Union covet what the Martians have built, and both governments aim to take it from them. The EU crew, commanded by the villainous and brilliant Richard Derk, arrives on Mars first, and sets to work at the job of surveying the Kasei Valley area and "rescuing" the Martians. The Martians are prepared for the "rescue" attempt, but Derk is a tough adversary. Deceit vs. honest wit, superior strength vs. plucky resolve, big government vs. libertarian paradise - Give Us This Mars has all this and more. The typos present in the first book are mostly absent in this book and Cronin's fiction flows more smoothly this time. I enjoyed the first book and I truly think this one was much better! I look forward to any sequel that Mr. Cronin has to offer.
