Maurtius, Reunion & Seychelles.......2007-10-05

This book is well organized and written. Of the three nations covered, I was most interested in the part of the book on the Seychelles. Unfourtunately, that was the least covered place. I found the other book I ordered: The Bradt Travel Guide to the Seychelles, more to my liking.

Indispensable Guidebook.......2005-04-18

I booked a tour to Mauritius in May-June 2004. Although I went with a travel agency, this book proved to be indispensable. I am rating it a five star based on my Mauritius experience only.

First and foremost, this guide provides a detailed map, essential for locating yourself on the island.
The book also provides true and accurate description of the various attractions and things to do.
The traveling tips concerning transportation, food and local culture were extremely helpful and saved me precious vacation time.
On top of all this, it provides a wealth of information on hotels and restaurants.

My advice:
- The prices in the book might be a little off now. It seems that the local currency, the Rupee, is pegged to the Euro which makes this island more expensive for US travelers (advice based on the currency conversion as we speak)
- Beware of tourist shops, their prices are 5 times the price you can get for the same item on the popular market.
- Go visit the popular markets, you will find nice exotic hand crafted items and some world renowned vanilla beans.
- Take hiking trips, there is some breath taking scenery out there
- And of course, take advantage of the magnificent beaches and water activities

Excellent for a trip to Mauritius.......2003-12-02

I spent 4 weeks living with a family on Mauritius this past summer, and this book was invaluable. I had many days to myself, and this book made it very easy to get around, with tips on restaurants that were up to date, good info about getting places on the bus and what things to see. The maps were probably the most helpful, especially in places like Port Louis and Grand Baie. I would recommend this book to anyone traveling to Mauritius, whether on a package tour, or on their own.

Indispensable for a Seychellois trip.......2002-08-01

Two summers ago we went into Seychelles, and Mauritius,Reunion& Seychelles LP travel guide was essential for us. Thanks to it, we could discover Seychelles was not just a diving and incredible beaches paradise, but its interiors landscapes were the best of our journey. We recomend it,because its fantastic information about Mahe,Praslin and La Digue islands, their national parks (such as Sainte Anne or Vallee de Mai). Prices were as high as the author wrote! and all information about public buses, rent-a-car and restaurants was right. Just one thing, we couldn't find where La Gogue Reservoir was! If anybody can strength the lake exists, please let us know!!

Fantastic Guide Book.......2002-06-04

This guide was my Bible while I traveled through Mahe and Praslin islands in 1999. The Seychelles are full of kind, open-hearted locals who are generous and more than willing to show Westerners around. My trusty LP guide helped me find several reasonable b&b's, Michael Adams' studio (wonderful local artist) and the most perfect beaches in the Indian Ocean. What I love about LP guides, and this one in particular, is the extensive history of the area the book is covering, as well as the locals' interests. Those intending to visit this incredible area should take this guide book - the photography alone will tempt anyone.

Outstanding Guidebook.......1999-11-18

I used an earlier edition of this book on a trip in 1996, in which I visited the Seychelles, Mauritius, and Reunion. I was travelling independently (not as part of a package tour) and the book helped in many ways to make my trip a great one. It provides a wealth of information about hotels and restaurants, island culture, and places and things to see on the islands. If you can only visit one of these three islands, I would recommend the Seychelles, which offer some of the finest tropical scenery I have ever seen. One advantage of Mauritius for the budget-minded traveler is that it is considerably less expensive than the Seychelles.

I never put it down........1998-11-04

My husband and I have just recently returned from a two week trip to Mauritius. Although we booked our trip through a well known travel agent and stayed in a hotel, the Lonely Planet Guide was invaluable. If you are considering a trip to Mauritius and are toying with the idea of a self catering option (which I actually would recommend), you need this book. If you are going for the hotel option but are interested in seeing the island and sampling the local cuisine outside the hotel, you need this book. Don't go without it. Everything that there is to see and do on the island of Mauritius, is in the book.

Not that great.......2007-06-13

I really liked Tanya Huff's Heart of Valor and Summon the Keeper series, and Wizard of the Grove as well, though I haven't really gotten into the Blood Books. But this collection of her earlier short stories just isn't that great, pretty unremarkable and forgettable. I'm not sure if I regret buying it, but I'm going to donate it to the local library. If you can read it for free it's not that bad.

This is quite a list of stories.

I usually don't go back and re-read but this book I did. One of the stories is absolutely precious. I would love to see it made into a book.

Here fill in stories are great too. I don't think anyone of the stories deserves less then 4 stars

Great Short Story Collection!.......2002-03-02

So far, I haven't read a book by Tanya Huff that I haven't enjoyed, and this collection is no exception. It contains 15 of her short stories, and there's not a bad one in the bunch. Best of all, it contains four short stories involving her Blood series characters Vicki Nelson, Michael Celluci and Henry Fitzroy - always a pleasure to read.

"The Chase Is On" is a space opera, whose characters deserve a book of their own. "Underground" tells the story of what may exist in the Toronto subway system. "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is about a mother, her young daughter, and the inheritance that is much more than it appears to be. "Shin Li-Ung" is a story about Chinese tradition, gangs, and unexpected protection. "First Love, Last Love" is the ultimate tale of boys and their toys. "Word of Honor" tells of a woman who discovers her own honor while carrying out a quest for someone else. "The Harder They Fall" is about what happens when fairy tales turn real. "A Debt Unpaid" is a mining story involving personal choices and personal ghosts. "February Thaw" takes the story of Demeter, Persephone, and Hades and turns them into a modern-day dysfunctional family. "Symbols Are A Percussion Instrument" involves an cynic and a pack of tarot cards. "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team" takes High Elves and crosses them with the Olympics. And then "This Town Ain't Big Enough", What Manner of Man", "The Cards Also Say" and "The Vengeful Spirit of Lake Nepeakea" all continue the story of Vicki Nelson (ex-cop, now a vampire PI), her lover Detective-Sargeant Michael Celluci, and Henry Fitzroy (romantic novelist, vampire, and bastard son of King Henry VIII of England).

If you've never read Ms. Huff, this is a great introduction to her writing. And if you're a fan, then this is icing on the cake.

Magic, Space Opera, Horror and more!.......2000-02-18

What Ho, Magic! is the first of what is hopefully several collections of short stories by Tanya Huff. There are stories of quiet, haunting horror; stories of magic and of mystery; and even a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek space opera story. This collection shows the breadth of Huff's skills, and she proves that she is quite capable of delivering a mystery with a private detective turned vampire, or an attack of a foot-and-a-half long dragon, or a tale of ghosts in the subway that will incite feelings of slight claustrophobic for a day or two.

Her characters are strong and entirely human; well, the vampire *was* a human at one point. In the story "Shing Li-Ung," Huff tells a tale of a sister and brother finding their heritage in the melting pot of cultures in modern Toronto. "The Chase is On" tells us of a starship captain, most emphatically *not* a smuggler, but she does occasionally stray on the odd side of the law. Huff even brings magic into the sports arena with the delightful and thought-provoking "A Midsummer Night's Dream Team." High Elves playing basketball? Tolkien would have conniptions--or laugh his head off in approval.

If you never read a Tanya Huff book this is the one to start with. The stories are amazing in their diversity! I have read just about every Huff book (except one that is out of stock). All her books are awesome! I love the Blood books, the Last Wizard, and the Quartered books. It amazes me that she has such an imagination.

This book just shows there doesn't seem to be anything she can't write about.

Different, innovative vampire novel........2006-05-15

I just finished reading this book, and I REALLY enjoyed it. Lichtenberg always provides a good read.
Vampires on the moon was, I thought, a different kind of premise, and that they were science fiction based, rather than occult or supernatural, I enjoyed.

I liked the relationship and interplay between Titus, the main character, and Abbott, his vampire "father." It had an intimate aspect of people who care about each other, but they were also adversaries in conflict, and I thought that Lichtenberg brought this through well.

One thing that I would like to have seen more of was the background of Earth's Luren, and their biological processes. The earth vampires are actually hybrids between humans and alien vampires who landed on earth 300 years ago. Titus's genetic father wasn't his mother's husband, but it wasn't Abbott, either. What happened? Where is Titus' genetic father? Does Titus know anything about him at all? Did I miss something? Am I getting it wrong?

When a luren awakens after being killed or dieing, but in reality just coming out of a very deep hibernation, and is taken out of their grave, are they the exact age that they were when they died? Or, if they are old when they die, are they young when they are resurrected? How does this work?

Titus mentions that he has more human ancestors than Abbott; Titus is more fully human. Why? Can't the human-luren hybrids breed with each other? Can they only breed with humans? I would have thought that in the first few generations the hybrid vampires would crossbreed with humans because the hybrids were very rare, but then I would think that they would mate with one another to try to preserve the luren characteristics. And, given the Tourists attitudes towards humans, I would think that they wouldn't want to breed with a human if they had any choice at all. Maybe the female hybrids are sterile, and the male hybrids have to crossbreed with humans?

At some point, I wanted to see Connie, Titus's supplier and the mastermind for the Residents. She seemed like such an interesting character from what Titus thinks about her. But she is totally offstage through everything.

I have been told that writers should hit the ground running, and not do too much flashback, let the backstory fill in by what the characters are doing now. Lichtenberg does this, and it makes for a suspenseful novel, but I just wanted a few more pages about the earth luren, themselves, just a little bit of history.

I have ordered Lichtenberg's novel "Dreamspy," so maybe that will answer my questions.

In some ways, this book reminded me of Fevre Dream, by George R. R. Martin. Both books have a very different take on vampires.

I recommend "Those of My Blood," and anything else by Lichtenberg.

Sci-fi not Smut.......2004-09-26

I first read this book at least ten years ago, and I've read it a number of times since then and enjoyed it every time. This is not a steamy, more sex and violence than story vampire romance. It's science fiction, with well-thought out aliens who happen to be similar to fantasy vampires, and a very nicely done love story. I can definitely see how it might not be Anita Blake fans' cup of tea, but, honestly, comparing this to that is like comparing Anne McCaffrey to Sandra Brown -- so mismatched that any conclusions are meaningless. If you like science fiction, and enjoy a compelling love story, adventure, vampires (the author very neatly weaves vampires and aliens together with all the best parts of vampire tradition included), and characters who have more pressing concerns than falling into bed together, try this book. You won't be disappointed.

Put me out of my misery............2004-06-24

You know how some books create characters and a world you love so much, you try to read slower because you don't want the book to end? This is not one of those books. I'm a fairly fast reader so I always finish any book I start. I have never regretted this policy more than now. I am three quarters of the way through this book and the end can't some soon enough for me. The best part of the book was the lengthy "Acknowledgement". The author seems to be a nice person and I feel bad panning her book but if I can save anyone the misery I'm in, I have to do it. If you want vampire/romance, read the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Vampires on the moon? This premise provides a unique backdrop for Jacqueline Lichtenberg's Those of My Blood.

Dr. Titus Shiddehara is a human/vampire hybrid alien from the planet Luren. Titus, an astronomer has been sent to Project Station on the moon the stop his nemesis and vamphyric father, Dr. Abbot Nandoha from contacting the home world of Luren.

Titus is a resident - a Luren who does not drink blood from the human source. Instead, he drinks a cloned, dried blood mixed with heated water. Abbot, on the other hand, is a Tourist. He feels justified in not only drinking blood from humans, but also in their domination. To Abbot, humans are just like cattle - or orl. If Abbot succeeds in sending his message to Luren, humanity will be doomed.

Abbot and Titus, as vampires have incredible telepathic powers. They are able to bend others to their will and create believable illusions. Using these skills, Abbot does everything he can to try contact Luren. Titus is forced to struggle to thwart Abbot and stay alive. This power struggle, set against a conflicted Earth, creates a refreshing and fascinating world with unexpected twists and turns. Those of My Blood will keep you guessing until the end.

In the middle 21st century, when man can reach the edge of the solar system in a few months, a group of astronauts discovers a huge spaceship - a derelict. Led by Olaf Carlsen, the astronauts brave the ship's cavernous interior and discover that it contains human beings who appear to be dead. Taking several back to Earth, Carlsen soon realizes that the humans are actually alien vampires - beings who suck the life forces out of their victims, and even possess some humans as well. Teaming up with Dr. Hans Fallada, a criminologist with an interest in the science behind vampires, Carlsen hunts an escaped vampire across England, struggling to uncover the truth before the rest of their kind can be brought to Earth by oblivious atronauts.

I've always wondered what sort of fame "Vampires" if it hadn't been adapted by Hollywood for the horrible movie "Lifeforce". I think people flock to the book because they're fascinated by the idea of life-sucking aliens, and figure that the book must be way-better than the movie. Viewers must have thought that Tobe Hooper simply junked a perfectly acceptable plotline that would have worked just fine on the screen. The problem is that the book is as weak as the movie, just for different reasons - many of them are painfully obvious. The writing is pedestrian, and some plot points are just clumsy. (The alien vampire is brought to life by an unwitting reporter brought to the spacelab by Carlsen; the reporter is the son of an old romantic interest - a plot point that seems unnecessary and is never explored again. It's a minor problem, but typical of the story.) Worse, Wilson goes out of his way to take the edge out of his edgy premise. Vampires? Perfectly rational - if aberrant - outgrowths of natural phenomenon. Contemporary science of the era of the story can not only detect the presence of life forces, but quantify it as well. Fallada and Carlsen are surprisingly calm in light of the threat of space vampires. Once the vampires escape their earthly confinement, Fallada & Carlsen jet off to Europe in search of a reclusive expert on vampires - the epidemic of life-sucking zombies not only fails to materialize, but the threat remains missing as well. When Carlsen finally corners the space vampire, he gets easy answers to his questions about the origin of the space vampires - there's no emotion, no tension. It's almost as if the book had been robbed of its own life forces.

Fantasy With a Curiously Believable Scientific Spin.......2005-06-02

No one would know about this book if it wasn't for the 80's scif-fi horror flick 'Lifeforce' (starring the very beautiful and very naked Mathilda May) which was based on this novel.

As always, the book is better than the movie, and if you are a big fan of the movie, as I am, (most straight men should be), then I highly recommend the book it was based off of. The most intriguing element for me is the scientific explanation of vampires, and examples of vampiristic creatures such as the moray eel. The origins of these creatures are not explored at any great length, but the detailed scientific elements make the story believable. The explanations of vampires in this book remind me of H.G. Wells' 'First Men in the Moon' when Cavort is explaining the scientific basis of cavorite to Mr. Bedford.

This is also a short book and an easy read. There's nothing too groundbreaking here, so I won't give it five stars, but it is still an enjoyable read. Anytime I meet people who are fans of science-fiction, I always point them to 'Space Vampires'.

Deeper and darker..........2002-09-03

Gaining cult status fame from the film based upon it (Lifeforce), Space Vampires goes far beyond the screenplay giving rhyme and reason to the alien lifestealers and their actions.

The surviving astronaut is a far more intelligent character and makes a good psychologist and detective - trying to understand what has befallen him and what is yet to follow. He travels Europe researching vampiric legend, is tempted by the heady thrill of sadomastic domination, and eventually confronts an extraterrestrial being with luciferian traits. Like fallen angels, the energy vampires seek to regain their former state of glory, a classic case of the end justifying the means.

The book's ending is far more satisfying than the film's despite the latter's fun Hammer-horror feel, great Mancini score, and Mathilda May's glorious body. Enough to stir even the most space-frozen soulstealer to acts of volcanic passion...

Amusing but cheesy.......1999-11-27

Although Wilson is certainly capable of great writing, this is not an example of his best work. Written primarily to entertain the masses. A good chuckle, if nothing else.
