Pleased so far.......2007-01-22
I bought this book recently (the new edition). I have read through it in planning my upcoming trip. Although I have yet to test the accuracy of the information in person, the book strikes me as practical. First, the book is paperback and fairly slender-- so not too bulky or heavy to actually carry around while you're traveling. The second thing that struck me is that it provides maps, including a metro line map. Although the maps may not be the most user friendly with their small print, they'll do fine for the trip planning stage of the trip (I usually get a good city map for navigation once I arrive to my destination city). The sections seem thorough, with an entire chapter on the history of the city. I was pleased with the day trip chapter as well, which lists many options for day trips, how you can get there, what you can do there, and how long it takes to travel there.
As far as the accuracy issue, I have yet to find a guidebook that is completely accurate. That being the case, I view them as one source of information among many and do not rely exclusively on a single guidebook.
Many inaccurate info.......2005-10-13
I have been reading the last 3 editions of Lonely Planet Madrid and it contains tons of innaccurate information over and over.
As in Spain one can not fine a lot of Australian wines, they draw the conclusion that "Spaniards do not take leaps into the unknown"
It is like everytime they make a new edition the stay 2 days in Madrid and take everything of the last edition, fading Madrid's feeling, culture, way of life and thinking.
Photography is also awful but this is just my opinion.
new guide is better.......2004-12-10
Looking at the dates, it seems like the reader reviews for this book are all for the old guide. The new version just came out, and I think it looks and reads a lot better, so maybe it's time to put up some new reader reviews.
um, i thought the guide was pretty good........2004-07-09
I spent 5 days in Madrid last August and found this book to be a useful guide. it will lead you to a good time in madrid, which consists of going to the museums, a bull fight and eating a lot. also, i recommend going to one of the sherry bars mentioned in the book.
How NOT to do Madrid.......2002-02-27
First and foremost, this book states that the Madrid Metro is "safe". This is not true for foreign males! The central part of the Metro (near the art museums and the city center) is rife with pick-pockets. We caught 1 attempt each day, or first 3 days there. The perpetrators were not, as some claim, "South Americans".
Many restaurants listed are gone. All prices in the book are quoted in pisitas, which is annoying now that everything is in Euros.
The maps are barely useful, being rather too small to read street names easily.
I have enjoyed other Lonley Planet Guides very much, but this one is a real stinker.

Excellent.......2007-07-12
Used this book in my first trip to Madrid. The day trip itinerary is excellent. It takes you through the streets of Madrid that people actually live in them and not a mere tourist attractions. The book is very useful in figuring out when to visit and what to look for.
I found it very useful and I will use similar book for my future visit to other cities.

Donna Jo Napoli thoughtfully and poetically reexamined the story of Hansel and Gretel from the witch's point of view in The Magic Circle. Here, she retells the Greek myth of the Sirens, whose sweet, beckoning singing caused countless shipwrecks. But did the Sirens (who Napoli imagines as mermaids) really mean for the sailors to perish? Or were these sultry singers cursed themselves? In Napoli's tale, because they are half-human, the 10 Sirens are doomed to lead short mortal lives--unless they can convince men to become their mates. But after witnessing a shipwreck in which the survivors kill one of her sisters, 17-year-old Sirena decides she would rather lose her chance at eternal life than trick a human into loving her. She vows to live alone on "an island where the first rays of sun bring sight to blind eyes.... I am going there to find new sight. I will wipe from my brain the sights I have seen and start over." Little does she know that due to a jealous goddess, a sea-serpent bite, and a dead hero, a man will come to her island and love her for herself, not just her song. Sirena is the perfect teenage heroine--questioning authority and falling in love no matter what the consequences. In creating this beautiful story, Napoli brings mythology alive for today's young adults. (Ages 12 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Customer Reviews:
I was expecting something better... .......2007-05-25
Well, I love stories about mermaids and I really wanted this book. But I was in for a big disappointment.
Sirena is a mermaid longing for immortality. She can only gain this if a mortal man loves her. After a misfortune on the rocks of Anthomesa, she swims to the island of Lemnos. She then meets a man who has a snake bite. (The snakes were sent by Hera, lady of olumpus.) She cleans the wound, and the two devolpe a love.
I know it sounds interisting, but really, this is not a captivating story. The ending is too ambigous, and she could have extended the story to make it something better, (and tragic.)
I could'nt get past chapter two of the story. It was that boring. I only know what happened because I read the ending and other select bits and piecies.
Sirena.......2007-02-23
The book Sirena is a very great book for someone who likes mushy/sad/lovey dovey stories. If you like books with a mystery in it you will not enjoy this book as much as someone who likes love stories.Sirena the protagonist in the book is very shy and not involved. When she notices the sailors beating her sister it changes her whole perspective of everything.in this book the antagonist is a sailor, the head sailor infact that made the decision to beat Sirena's sister. You don't read too much about the antagonist.I believe that when the antagonist decides to kill someone, that Sirena loves,is the most evil thing a antagonist can do to the antagonist. My thoughts about the book are that it is definately not my favorite book because I don't really like love stories. This book gets interesting when Sirena falls in love with a man.Its as if you don't know if they are getting married.
looove!.......2006-11-08
i havent read this book in a while, but i have read it about 3 or 4 times! i loved the way the story moved and the way ms. napoli wrote it. what i'm remembering right now is that it kept me crying for a good while. i also recommend "Beast" by Napoli as well.
A story that sparkles..........2006-09-29
Personally, I think this book deserves ten stars. If someone were to ask me what my favorite book is, I think I would have to point to this one! Donna Jo Napoli has done an out-of-this-world job. Her writing style is very unique. I believe I saw it described as "sugary" elsewhere, but I can't agree with that. Her imagery is almost surreal in its vividness. You can taste the salt water and hear the cries of their three guardian birds. You can feel in your own chest the wracking sobs of Sirena and her sisters when they inadvertantly cause the death of a ship filled with Greek warriors who - unknown to the young mermaids - don't know how to swim. Napoli's love scenes, while suggestive, aren't crude or overly graphic. They are sweet and tender, and it is obvious how deeply Sirena loves Philoctetes. I also appreciate that Napoli doesn't tell the reader why we should fall in love with Philoctetes, or why we should sympathize with Sirena, she SHOWS it. She makes us feel for this sea maiden. Sirena herself is a heroine such as I have not found in many other novels. She captures the mind with her innocence and her own strong sense of honor and morals. You can't help but love her. She sparkles.
Admittedly, this book is geared more toward girls and women; boys may not have the attention span or interest in a story such as this, as it centers more around love and sacrificing for your partner than on war and fighting. But Sirena does offer a very hopeful message for girls who may be struggling with their personal identity. I found it very comforting and still do. It may be inappropriate for very young children, but when the time comes I will have no hesitation about giving this book to my teenage daughters.
In short, don't listen to the naysayers! Especially if you love Greek mythology, as I do: you will get a great deal more out of this story if you are familiar with the stories that surround it. Napoli very skillfully weaves these legends into Sirena's tale. If you are familiar with the Greek myths, you will have a much greater appreciateion for what it must have taken to create this story. I am now on a mission to find other, similar stories about mermaids, as they are my favorite mythological creature and have a lot of personal significance for me, but I'm sure this one will always have a place of honor on my bookshelf, no matter how full it gets.
Sirena- not what I was expecting.......2006-07-26
I am slightly disappointed by author Donna Jo Napoli.
I had heard a lot of reviews praising "Sirena" and couldn't wait to read it; when I finally did so, I was slightly let down.
This book does not have the magic of many of Napoli's other books, and its story is not as captivating.
The plot sounds engaging at first; Sirena is a siren, cursed to be lonely and mortal unless she can find a man who will love her. Only then can she become immortal. However, she realizes too soon that her one gift for winning men, her seductive song, only leaves them either dead or angry. How can she ever find a human that will truly love her, when she is little more than a cursed hybrid?
The book starts out okay, too...but about halfway through we start realizing that there's not really much to the story. Most of the book is spent on the island of Lemnos, where not much happens and we are just sort of dragged through a muddy plotline. Sirena's whole point of living--her quest to find a man to love her-- covers very little of the book, and once she gains immortality, there's really not anywhere else to go. The book covers many years and after a while the chapters just turn into random events that happen to Sirena and her lover. The end is not satisfying, either; perhaps if the book were a little more interesting, I would have been truly sad for our heroine. As it is though, it just lets you down even more. The reader knows that their romance will not be able to work out in the end; love is hard between a mortal man and an immortal mermaid; but the ending is still rather awfully put.
However, I did like the concept or the siren who does not wish to destroy...it gives a new meaning to the "merciless" seductresses. The book is full of Greek mythology, so if you're new to it it may be a little overwhelming, but it is very interesting to learn all of the little stories that you may or may not have heard before.
Overall, I was sort of disappointed with "Sirena," at most I would give it 3 1/2 stars, but it is still an interesting read. Especially if you are into Greek mythology.

Book Description
Discovered by Martha Divine in the backstreets of San Juan, picking over garbage, drugged out of his mind and singing boleros that transfix the listener, a fifteen year old hustler is transformed into Sirena Selena, a diva whose uncanny beauty and irrisistable voice will be their ticket to fame and fortune.Auditioning for one of the luxury hotels in the Dominican Republic, Selena casts her spell over Hugo Graubel, one of the hotel's rich investors.Graubel is a powerful man in the Republic, married with children.Silena, determined to escape the poverty and abuse s/he suffered as a child, engages Graubel in a long seduction in this mordant, intensely lyrical tragi-comedy - part masque, part cabaret - about identity (class, race, gender) and "the hunger and desire to be other things."
Customer Reviews:
Sirena Selena: Caribbean Queen!.......2000-10-24
It has been a long time since I have read a beautiful novel set in the Caribbean. I had to get my hands on Mayra Santos Febres's book! It is so great to rediscover my Latin roots!
Sirena Selena is a fifteen-year-old boy whose grandmother died and left him alone in the streets of San Juan. The boy, however, had a great gift: he had the voice of an angel. Having heard him sing sad boleros in an alley, La Martha -- a Drag Queen and nightclub owner -- decides to take the boy under "her" wing. The novel takes you on a delicious and poignant trip to the life-altering events of Selena's life.
I love the bickering and the conversations between the "locas"; it is hilarious. The storytelling and language is beautiful. I marvel at the flawless translation. This is a very unique novel that everyone should indulge in. I highly recommend it!
Caribbean Sizzle.......2000-09-23
When the 15 year-old Sirena Selena gets dolled up like a goddess and emotes her way through heart-wrenching boleros that her abuela taught her, men get weak in the knees and women swoon. That Sirena happens to be a boy (and massively hung) with his whole illusion masterminded by La Martha (another draga of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico) makes no difference to anybody once they are in the overwhelming power of the voice and the image. They have seen Heaven and they want a piece of it, whether under the gown they find boy, girl or something totally new. Santos-Febres is brilliant in her descriptions of gender construction and the artifice of "womanly wiles" as well as of the fragility of their opposite, the macho facade. The gossip, cat-fighting and climbing that the dragas of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic indulge in becomes almost heroic in her capable hands. The tale of a "woman" besting her man is as old as the hills, but the Caribbean sizzle and drag-queen sass make this novel as refreshing a delight to read in the moment as it is a provocative moral tale to ponder after the fact. Ay, carajo! Sing out, Sirena Selena!
Great look at locas from inside out.......2000-09-14
I loved this book. It has the feel of an anthopological study on street living and the glamour that is always elusive and fleeting. Martha is indeed divine, as a character and the wisdom that she imparts. A great look at a very vibrant part of society which most of us don't know. It has many tragic and unjust moments, but it all goes towards making that perfect performance. Great book.
Sirena Selena.......2000-09-09
A wonderful novel. I found it difficult to stop reading this beautifully written & translated book. The story is told in a way that brings vivid visuals to mind. It takes you on an entertaining rollercoaster ride through the emotions associated with romance, friendship, and self-discovery. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed "Like water for chocolate" or "Love in the time of cholera".
Santos first novel is a delight in Caribbean literature.......2000-07-19
This first novel by Puerto Rican writer Mayra Santos is the voyage of a couple of characters seeking for a better future in the Domincan Republic. The main two characters are carefully constructed by Santos, so that the reader gets a believable and loving kid, that dresses as a woman and amazes people with his voice, plus an enchanting woman that guides his career. Santos also utilizes different points of view to complete the story and even incorporates parts in English that reflect the contradicting situation in the Caribbean. Santos involves the reader through a journey of music, love, and ambition using her best skills as a talented writer. Part sad, and part happy, the successful combination of fiction and history in "Sirena Selena" is not to be missed.
