Book Description
Here's a lively, hilarious, not-so-reverent crash course through the great philosophical traditions, schools, concepts, and thinkers. It's Philosophy 101 for everyone who knows not to take all this heavy stuff too seriously. Some of the Big Ideas are Existentialism (what do Hegel and Bette Midler have in common?), Philosophy of Language (how to express what it's like being stranded on a desert island with Halle Berry), Feminist Philosophy (why, in the end, a man is always a man), and much more. Finallyit all makes sense!
I laughed, I learned, I loved it! Roy Blount Jr.

Entertaining and educational........2007-10-18
"Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar" is highly entertaining, fast read that covers an astonishing range of philosophical issues with an economy of words. The authors manage their brevity by illustrating those issues with very apt stories, anecdotes and jokes. And the humor of their stories, anecdotes and jokes has sufficient range to appeal to a general audience. (If you don't like some of their jokes, don't worry -- they've got a million of 'em.)
But wait! The real burning philosophical question you want answered is this: why would you want to read a book about philosophy? I mean, really, this book may be funny but you can get lots of joke books that are funnier and don't make you learn serious stuff (like philosophy, for example).
I have just the answer for you. Learning philosophy can help you think better. It can help you understand why you think the way you do and give you options for expanding your possibilities. It can help you understand the ways in which others can influence and manipulate your thinking and how they may get you to believe things that are misleading, untrue, or damaging. It can help you make better judgments. It can help you influence other people's thinking and persuade them to your viewpoint. Learning philosophy can be very handy.
On its serious side, "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar" is a good introduction to the main concepts of philosophy. Its entertaining and humorous side makes learning philosophy enjoyable and much easier than a textbook.
And, if you are a student, the book may be an excellent companion to your textbook for a required philosophy class.

Plato Would Be Proud.......2007-10-18
This is a concise and brilliantly written Cliff Note to philosophy...I found this book on accident or was it by design? Dan Klein said that they designed the book to be found by accident...I use this book as a companion to economics because it concisely details the history of thought with wit. The book is excellent leisure reading too.
Could have been good.......2007-10-12
This book was a clever idea, and could have been very enjoyable but for the dirty jokes. If you seek to avoid filth, avoid this book.
Philosophy made fun.......2007-10-10
Harvard philosophy majors Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein present an unconventional approach to the study of philosophy in Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar...Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes. Cathcart and Klein tie in ten major principles of philosophy with the art of comedy. The two authors actually use common jokes (some of them hysterically funny) to illustrate the concepts in clear terms. From metaphysics to meta-philosophy, they have managed to find jokes that illuminate the common logic that can be used to explain major abstractions.
It is fascinating how much philosophy can be explained within the context of a simple joke, but Cathcart and Klein have successfully undertaken this task. Parallels between the constructs of philosophy and comedy surface as each chapter introduces a dialogue between Greek friends Dimitri and Tasso, questing for a greater understanding of philosophical reasoning. A brief summary of each principle is interspersed with relevant quips and cartoons. A glossary at the close of the book expands on some of the more complicated concepts that might have been confusing.
I was pleased to find that only a few of the jokes are familiar to me, making the majority of the book fresh, new material. Many are side-splitting passages that demand to be shared without hesitation. I won't quote any of the specific passages because I was dismayed to find so many had already been republished in various reviews, but I will note I spent an evening reading aloud to my family from Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar to raucous laughter. It was a hit.
Philosophy lessons by jokes.......2007-10-07
This book is like having Jay Leno as your college philosophy professor. I laughed and laughed when I read the jokes in this book. I did learn some philosophy along the way.

this is not a tourist guide book. it is a lovely little book on the london walking routes with a poetic insight and sentiments.the authors invite us to accompany them through taking a walk around the hemstead heath by sharing their memories with us. while reading it, i soon found myself walking with them, listening to what they knew about legends of london. also, the book contains a city map of london as well as the means of transportation, so that we may get to the hemstead heath without getting lost. if you plan to visit england soon, this book will be your valuable companion.

Should be called "An adequate London walk".......2001-02-21
When you have the audacity to call something "perfect", you should make more of an effort to merit the title.
This is a nice little book, and the walk is lovely, but I have seen much better books (and walks). What does make this book charming is that one can imagine walking with Mr. Curley, hearing him recite the literary passages presented here and seeing the sites discussed; indeed, one need not depend solely on imagination since there are a generous number of (black-and-white) photographs included. A very good map of the area is included.
But the book fails as either a ramble or a tour guide. If it is a ramble, let there be more narrative; if it is a guidebook, then let there be more information.
Taking the walk with Mr. Curley is undoubtedly a wonderful experience. Unfortunately this book does not capture that experience.
Dated and poor black and white photography.......2000-11-15
This book is an interesting ramble in and around Hamstead heath. It is a little dated now and requires an over haul. If you want to visit the heath (where parts of Nottinghill were filmed) there are better around however this one does offer an interesting if old perspective.
Little guide book.......2000-08-10
This is not a film book. Ebert and some of his old English teachers have written an interesting guidebook, recommending a route that you can take for an enjoyable day's walk through historic London, visiting parks, historic homes and grave sights, and a pub lunch. I haven't tried the walk myself, so I can't vouch for it, but I do know that this book makes me keenly interested to fly to England and try!
Book Description
Dear Readers,
I will never forget the morning that Meinhardt Raabe's agent called me and insisted on stopping by my office that very same day. "I've got a Wizard of Oz project that you have to see to believe." From the moment I looked at Mr. Raabe's charming memoir and his remarkable collection of Oz memorabilia, I knew this would be a book unlike any that I have published.
Memories of A Munchkin, written by Meinhardt Raabe with Daniel Kinske, almost feels like three books in one.
Part one is a memoir by Raabe who stepped into film history at the age of 23 when he played the Munchkin coroner in THE WIZARD OF OZ. It's a charming and inspiring story that begins on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, moves to his appearance in a special "Midget Village" exhibit at the 1934 World's Fair and on to Hollywood. Through an agent, Raabe was cast in THE WIZARD OF OZ and much of the memoir is devoted to his account of working on the most beloved film of all time - enduring tough auditions, watching as the glorious Munchkinland set was built, putting up with long days of rehearsal, being costumed by legendary MGM designer Adrian, hob-nobbing on the set with the stars, witnessing various mishaps during filming, being visited on the set by curious Hollywood royalty such as Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable, and much more. Here, too, is Raabe's life after THE WIZARD OF OZ: His career as an accomplished pilot with the Civil Air Patrol during World War II; more than 30 years as "Little Oscar," spokesman for the Oscar Mayer ompany; his charity work and his role as advocate and kindred spirit to Little People everywhere. Mr. Raabe's memoir is lavishly illustrated with the most incredible material such as! blueprints of the Munchkinland set, Adrian's costume sketches, MGM's original Oz matte paintings, and many rare, behind-the-scenes photos from director Victor Fleming's personal scrapbook.
Part two of the book is the most complete collection of OZ movie posters and lobby cards ever published. Included are a beautiful watercolor painted by the legendary Al Hirschfeld, and the jumbo window card that was originally displayed in Mr. Raabe's hometown theater of Watertown, WI!
Part three is a collection of specially commissioned Oz art from some of the world's best-known and best-loved illustrators - people like Al Hirschfeld, Frank Frazetta, Mort Drucker, Jack Davis and Frank Kelly Freas. I especially like Ron Dias' painting of what he imagines the interior of a Munchkin house would look like, and Philo Barnhart's piece that combines the main characters of Oz with those of Snow White. Duck Edwing's piece, Hearse of a Different Color, could not be more colorful or more charming. And you won't believe all the detail - and clever humor - in Tom Bunk's piece depicting the Kansas tornado at the beginning of THE WIZARD OF OZ.
Put it all together and you have a treasure trove of Oz stories and memorabilia. No fan of this beloved Hollywood classic will want to be without Memories of A Munchkin.

Customer Reviews:
A very charming read.......2006-07-06
As an avid Wizard of Oz fan for almost 20 years now, I've read just about every book about the making of the movie. I was beginning to feel that there was nothing more for me to learn about this movie, until I read this book. Mr. Raabe's book gives a very interesting, fresh perspective about making the film, or at least the Munchkinland sequences. His writing style is conversational, so you feel as though he's sitting right there telling you all about what it was like to be on the beautiful Munchkinland set (describing details that I had missed in my many viewings of the movie), what it was like to meet Judy Garland, and other behind-the-scenes tid-bits. His Munchkin Coroner career aside, Mr. Raabe has had a fascinating life as the original Little Oscar mascot for Oscar Mayer, and as a flight instructor for the Civil Air Patrol. In addition, there are many photos from the making of the film, which I have never seen before, as well as original art that was commisioned for this book and shows many different artists' interpretations of Oz and Munchkinland. I very highly recommend this book for any Oz fan!
One Terrific Book and Author!.......2005-09-02
Our family met Meinhardt Raabe when our daughter was born with dwarfism 24 years ago. Meinhardt is an incredible person, and he speaks from his heart, in his daily life, as well as in this book, Memories of a Munchkin: An Illustrated Walk Down the Yellow Brick Road. He speaks openly and shares his life and experiences with you as if you were sitting down right next to him. You can't help but notice his genuine caring and sincerity coming through every page as he speaks candidly of his lifetime experiences. Our family highly recommends you buy this book. It will be a family treasure for many years to come.
Excellent Book. Well Done............2005-08-04
I think of myself as a big Oz/Judy Garland fan and I think this is the best book ever written about the Munchkins. I thought I had seen every behind the scene still but I was wrong. There are many in this book that are from Mr. Raabe's collection that are new to me. I'm so happy that someone that was actually there during the making of The Wizard of Oz wrote such a complete book. I enjoyed it immensely. I would tell anyone who likes The Wizard of Oz to make sure this book is part of your collection. Thanks Mr. Raabe!
What an Oz-some book!.......2005-07-21
This book is a must-have for all Oz fans! You get a Munchkin's eye view of the filming of The Wizard of Oz. Memories of a Munchkin is jam-packed with rare photographs. It's like a feast for the eyes.
You'll come away with a new-found respect for the always charming Meinhardt Raabe. With only 9 of the original 124 Munchkins still alive, this book is a treasure. I've talked to Meinhardt in person several times and he's always so sweet. After reading this book, you'll feel as though you've met him too!
Memories of a Munchkin is full of little known trivia and fascinating tid-bids, sure to please even the most casual Oz viewer.
If you only buy 1 book this year, make it Memories of a Munchkin!
Hats off to Meinhardt Raabe for such an Oz-some book!
Really Most Sincerly .... Wonderful!.......2005-05-13
This book is a must have for any die hard(like me) fan of the 1939 film THE WIZARD OF OZ. It is brimming with never before seen pictures of the movie set, munchkins, scene direction...not to mention other movie stars of the day & lots of Judy Garland!
Meinhardt's story is both intersting & compelling, he's a sweetheart!

Exquisite.......2004-06-21
I'm not even through the first tour of Stepping Out, and I'm already addicted. From page one, I was hooked. Daniel writes with a humor and an appreciation for Gay History that we can all appreciate and love. The information is detailed, without being boring or stuffy. The descriptions make you feel like you're there, even if you're just loungeing in bed scanning through it. From the riots at Stonewall Inn, to strolling down Christopher Street, it's like you're there. He includes the details that matter, such as witty quotes out of some of our favorite, and even a few unknown, GLBT historical figures. I can't wait to go to New York and actually visit the places he speaks about! This is a must for anyone who is interested in GLBT history and culture.
Mr. Hurewitz's New York is the place to stay........1999-01-13
With Disney changing the face of Midtown Manhattan, "Stepping Out" is a wonderful look back at a rich and compelling history of New York City. Mr. Hurewitz's observations will appeal to any lover of New York - straight or gay. His witty prose, unique sense of humor, and detailed maps and photographs will force you to don a pair of comfortable shoes, "grab a cheese sandwich" and take to the streets. If only all travel books could be this good.

Book Description
The true story of one mans walk across America. The book weaves the experiences the author encountered in a lite and lively manner, covering everything from romance to history, nature and environmental concerns; to the people and places he met along the way.
Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed this book.......2005-11-24
I think the previous reviewer is rather harsh with this book. My only complaint was that it had some typos. Rogers's plans and goals clearly changed as he made the hike, and rarely do huge-scale plans made long in advance go as planned. I thought it was a great read, and Rogers's stories really inspired me to do more adventuring of my own. He's an inspiration to me, more for his stick-to-it-ness than anything else.
Nothing less than inspiring.......2004-11-28
Who doesn't want to quit their job and go live out a dream? Daniel Rogers proves that it is possible, enjoyable, and above all, inspiring. What a wonderful book. I couldn't put it down!
Hitting The Trail in "Amercia: one Step At A Time".......2004-10-26
There are mornings when the rising sun lights the Texas horizon fiery gold, the air is crisp and pure, and I really wish I was off hiking somewhere. Growing up with a love of the outdoors, hiking was a major part of my life for many years. For a variety of reasons, those days have passed and hiking isn't possible anymore.
But for Dan Rodgers it still is and he did something that many of us wish we had done. Sitting at his desk at Colgate-Palmolive he realized that while he liked his job, it wasn't the answer for him. He wanted to be back on the trail and exploring again. While he appreciated the job and the financial security it gave him, he wanted something more. As many of us have thought and Dan wrote on page 2 of his book....
"It made even less sense to me to live only for the purpose of going to work each day and return home to rest up for another day at the office. I debated the dilemma and decided that while the cost of chasing dreams was very high-the cost being failure, for we will never achieve all we set out to do-the reward was even greater. The reward was life as opposed to mere existence, and I was tired of existing. I wanted to live again. "
With the support of friends, including his soon to be hiking companion Dodger, Dan quit his job, emptied his apartment and took what he wanted to keep to his Mom's in Ohio.
"After months of preparation, the time to walk out the door had finally arrived. I had prepared at length, studying maps and reading everything I could find about the many trails cross America. Six years, forty-eight states and twenty-four thousand miles lay ahead of me. America was waiting." (Page 7)
They head out, moving southeastward and the resulting book chronicles the hiking adventures of Dan with his buddy Dodger as they travel together. Sometimes they travel together and as the trip progresses, various events happen to cause Dan to travel alone or with others as he hikes the trails and roadways of America. As he crosses each state, he explains the local or regional history of the area he hiked as well as his own personal experiences. Part travel guide, part history book, the resulting memoir of an amazing 3400-mile walk recounts a journey that began before the devastating tragedy of September 11, 2004 and ended long after.
As he travels America, state by state, the author shifts from past tense to present tense and back again, often in the same sentence. This, along with the occasional typo and grammar problem, makes for a disconcerting read at times. However, these errors are relatively minor in the scope of the work and can be for the most part ignored as the reader follows his journey affected by missing signage, incorrect maps, weather and bodily injury. Through it all, Dan survives the elements and everything else with his goal in mind.
This is an interesting and enjoyable read about an amazing adventure. In a nation besieged by terror concerns and negative politics, it is nice to read how one man literally gave up the everyday working world to chase his dream. That willingness to do it and for so many folks to support it along the way is a reminder of how great people are despite the constant media reports to the contrary.

If not now, when?.......2004-03-31
If you want to know more about the everyday America, you could do not better than to walk along with Dan Rogers from Ohio through Kentucky & Tennessee, cutting across the corner of Alabama into Mississippi. Turning north to Arkansas & along the border of Oklahoma into the panhandle of Texas & on through New Mexico, Arizona, & finally to the Pacific Ocean.
Rebeccasreads has interviewed Eagle Scout Dan Rogers & recommends AMERICA ONE STEP AT A TIME as a lively adventure of a mostly solitary walk along the back roads of this land, full of history & philosophy, simple humor & rare awe.
My Wake-Up Call.......2004-02-08
"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation". When Henry David Thoreau penned these now famous words, he'd never met Daniel Rogers. "America One Step at a Time" is far more than the title implies. A common man undertakes the uncommon task of walking across America. Like most of us, Rogers lived by the alarm clock and on-ramp metering system, living a life of throttled dreams and ambitions. But unlike most of us, he awoke one morning and decided to throw "common-sense" to the wind and pursue his dream. In his alluring book, he gives us a delightful look at the essence of America, its people, its country-sides, and its history. But he tantalizes our latent fires of adventure and discovery. He tells a wonderful tail of adventure while fanning the flames of spiritual rebellion that lies within us all. It's captivating reading and it challenges us to awake to the real world around us and experience it before it's too late. A wonderful book.
