Book Description

There is something powerfully erotic about Catholic schoolgirl uniforms. The blazer and sweater, the immaculate white shirt, the pleated skirt, the knee socks and athletic shoes are the stuff of legend. It's a charming fetish, as psycho-sexually resonant as the black motorcycle jacket or the nurse's uniform. Intended to bring equal status to the student body, and to induce its wearers to behave, the uniform embodies a nascent rebellion against sexual repression. With Katlick School, Sante D'Orazio has produced a witty visual narrative of flirtation, starring a beautiful Latina schoolgirl named Kat. She holds her notebook like a shield to ward off advances. But with her skirt hiked up and snaps-not buttons-on her shirt, there's a hint of come-hither. We soon discover that the pleated skirt conceals "Snoopy" bikini underwear and a tattoo. Kat is willing to trade her trainers for thigh-high spike heeled boots-and as the fantasy unfolds-we get to see her entirely out of uniform. Obviously she is committed to rounding out her education...As the Red Hot Chili Peppers sang, "Catholic school girls rule!"

5 out of 5 stars If art is anything that evokes an emotion............2007-06-21

Then this book is successful. Obviously, the other reviewers so far hate it, but I disagree. I'm not going to go into long justifications of why this book is great -- either you get it or you don't. It's a matter of personal taste, but in my opinion this is well worth having in a collection.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of bookshelf space.......2007-02-02

This book is absolutely pathetic. There is nothing remotely erotic about any of the pictures. A lot of the pics are out of focus and I doubt that is what was intended. Esquire magazine had a favorable review of this book which is the only reason I picked it up.

1 out of 5 stars Horribly Disappointed!!.......2006-12-28

Let me start by saying that it pains me to write this review. I LOVE Sante's photography and his previous books (which I own) are brilliant. This is such a missed opportunity that it blows my mind. Yes, many have associated the Catholic school girl outfit with fantasies.. I get it... but where are the fantasies?!?! The book looks like it was shot entirely in one day with a model that couldn't be more bored or undirected as to why she was there with a camera pointed at her in the first place. This school girl genre was so ripe for a clever, sexy story told with pictures.. or an essay of the gradual flow of the innocence of the school girl to the discovery of herself as a woman.. or the good girl/bad girl theme. There was no attempt at all to be playful, teasing, sexy, naughty, or just clever in any way with the photos. The book itself is very well made.. great stock was used and it feels like a quality art book. Unfortunately it's almost completely empty inside of what I believe many buyers of this book are hoping to get. I'm sadly returning mine tomorrow.

1 out of 5 stars this guy is an artist ?!?.......2006-12-21

this book is terrible. one girl. 2 outfits. and a handful of nudes. boring! the poses are lame and the "overexposed film" look as art? puh-lease. then if that's the case, i have a drawer full of art at the end of every roll of film i've ever shot. do your self a favor and buy [...] instead. it is a vastly superior book. and "playboy" should be ashamed of themselves for putting this in their last issue as a book worth buying. they along with the photographer of this book should refund my money. [...] and i'll never buy another thing from this clown again.

Book Description

Photographer Sante d'Orazio's work graces the covers and interiors of the world's leading fashion magazines. He's an insider in that elite group of rich, famous, and beautiful jet-setters whose celebrity and pulchritude have become an almost obsessive fascination for a public that can't get enough of them. Now this dazzling collection of over 600 color and black-and white-photographs--both intimate and revealing--provides a window into the exciting life of the man whose portfolio resembles a "who's who" of entertainment and fashion. The faces and bodies--including many nudes--of supermodels, movie stars, musicians, and artists grace the pages of this lush volume in images from magazine and celebrity shoots as well as in candid photos which capture private moments with delicious spontaneity. And throughout, a collage of travel souvenirs and personal notes--written in d'Orazio's own hand--about his work, travels, and fascinating photographic encounters provide a startling window into the life of this remarkable artist. More than a mere photographic collection or celebrity journal, A Private View offers a voyeuristic vision of a lifestyle watched by many, but lived by few.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars JAY DAVIDSON FANS.......2002-12-15

D'Orazio's wonderful photo collection of the famous and not so famous is worth the price of the book just for the four pages devoted to the gender bending Jaye Davidson who has helped this gay reader accept and enjoy himself. Candid photo's of Christie and Naomi, Matt Dillon, Dennis Hopper, Claudia Schiffer, John Travolta and on and on... give personal insights into celebities I have never encounterd in the fashion magazines or the tabloids. This collection is fun, revealing, and, at times, upsetting. And worth every penny.

3 out of 5 stars Amusing?.......2002-04-02

The book gives a nice seleciton of some of sante D'Orazio's photos, but with an amusing and fun narrative by the photographer. The book works really well set out in the dairy format, which adds a great deal to the entertainment value of the book. I can see that some people, with a primary interest in the photos, could be disappointed at first, but its definately worth a look. When I first got the book I wasnt sure if I liked it or not, but when it comes down to it, there are some great photo's in the book and it has certainly grown on me. I find the perfect book to sit back on my balcony with on a sunny morning with a strong cup of coffee.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, compact photo book.......2001-12-03

I find this to be a great book. Personally, I like the small, compact size of it over big hardback coffee table books. This book fits nicely on my shelf. The only problem I have with this book, is the cover. After looking at it for a bit, the cover started to bend and crease. The binding comes undone easily, and the book itself doesn't look very nice on the outside after this. But with some light care, I'm sure it will be fine. At the local bookstore here, almost all of the books had been looked through and had this problem. Other than that, I really loved this book. If you are familiar with Sante D'orazio's work, then this book is a must have. The collection of images are grand, and the "diary" type writing gives it a personal touch. Some images in the book are aimed to people over the age of 18, and I think maybe males would prefer this book over most females, due to the taste and manner of some images. But, I find this book to have a very personal gallery of some of the best photo's he has taken. If you like b&w sketchbook style, this book is nice for you!

5 out of 5 stars Really, really good........2001-11-14

After browsing through the photography section at my local bookstore I was surprised to find the most impressive work I've seen in years not in one of the many, many large expensive hardcover coffee-table books but a compact, paperback folio. The women are tremendously glamorous and if I may say so D'Orazio's photographs of men are much sexier than those found in most so called "gay" photography books. His images have the natural, spontaneous feel of Bruce Weber or Steven Meisel rather than that contrived, fetishistic, posed style typical of Herb Ritts or Mapplethorpe. Along with an out-of-print book by French photographer RV Lebeaupin titled Photographies: Joue-Le Moi Plaisir this is one of the sexiest photo books I've come across.

4 out of 5 stars Not next Avedon, but fun!.......2001-10-04

If you are remotely interested in glamour photography and/or supermodels, you will undoubtedly recognize some of the pictures in the book. His main theme is not subtle - how to turn out stunning pictures of scantily clad (if clothed at all) beautiful women - mostly supermodels. Deep? Technical prowess? Innovator? Probably not. Sexy and fun is the name of the game here. In fact, the overwhelming impression one gets from the book is that the models and the photographer are having real fun. The strength of his pictures lie in the apparent spontaneity and the naturalness or the genuineness of the moment that you feel. Some of the pictures are impressive in that he gets away with publishing them!
I should mention that he also has shots of men (Keanu Reeves, Stones, Guns & Roses, etc), which did not have as much impact as his pictures of women; maybe this is my problem.
More than half the pictures are in bw and the book is not in large format. However, I enjoyed the book, which is quite reasonably priced considering the number of prints.

    Book Description

It's not only fashion designers who leave their mark on a look: they'd be nothing without make-up artists and hairstylists. Odile Gilbert, one of the most creative hairstylists of all, finds herself in the greatest of demand these days. She works her fleeting, human materials into designs much as a sculptress would, borrowing from historical styles and ethnic languages of form, using feathers, earth and precious stones to fashion the most lavish of creations. This book sneaks a look behind the scenes of the fashion world and shows Odile Gilbert at work and alongside her finished creations. Her Style includes pictures of fashion shows, photographs for magazines and advertising campaigns. It is the result of many layers of fruitful collaboration: stylized with some of the world's best known fashion designers, photographed by the best fashion photographers and modeled on the most famous models of our time.

      Sante D'Orazio: A Private View

During the 1980s and 1990s, top fashion photographer Sante D'Orazio kept a diary that he published in 1998 in his first book A Private View. Featuring photographs of stars alongside pages from this diary, with Polaroid snaps, air tickets, notes, and other kinds of personal souvenirs, it provided a peep behind the scenes of his work and at the stars he worked with, such as Julia Roberts, Keanu Reeves, the Rolling Stones, Johnny Depp, John Travolta, Kate Moss and many others. An instant international bestseller, the unique book was quickly sold out. It is finally available again in an unchanged second edition.

      Edited by David Fahey

      Text by Francesco Clemente

Sante D'Orazio, born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1956, has worked for all major fashion and lifestyle magazines. He lives in New York.

David Fahey is a Fine Art Photography dealer in Los Angeles representing Herb Ritts, Steve Shapiro, William Claxton and others.

3 out of 5 stars private view redux.......2001-06-18

I hate to post something unenthusiastic about such an exciting photographer, but "Photographs" was somewhat dissapointing for me -- I'd read/viewed with great interested his previous book, "a private view" -- which was fantastic. "Photographs" brings back a lot of those same images in a larger format, on worse paper, without the exciting layout and at twice the price. (Had "private view" not been published or were it out of print, I would have rated this book higher.) I think D'Orazio is one of the most exciting fashion photographers working today and I was ultimately saddened that there's not a whole new books worth of photographs here. If you have the option, buy "a private view" instead.

3 out of 5 stars Relaxed Female Nudes.......2001-03-03

If photography books were rated by how relaxed, natural, and open the models are, this book would be a five star book. Many of these images have not been published or shown before.

Before going further, be aware that this book contains many tasteful female nudes and one male nude. If this book were a motion picture, it would probably have an "R" rating.

The book has two serious flaws. First, many of the two-page spreads are devastated by the center crease of the binding. The images should be been skipped or reproduced differently. Second, many of the images are vapid. Whenever Mr. D'Orazio moves away from doing a female nude in motion or with a prop, there's often not much there.

The best of the book is outstanding, and if you overlook the spoiled and uninspiring images, you will be very pleased. Mr. D'Orazio at his best has good talent in composition and use of shadows that make his work much more interesting. When he models work with a prop, whether a cigarette or something more substantial like an easel or a skull, magical things usually happen. The book uses a very fine quality matte paper that reproduces the subtle shadings well.

His unadorned and propless female nudes are a tour de force in one sense. He shows you something you haven't seen before in these people (most of whom are celebrities). Few photographers can accomplish so much with so little, but the viewer (unless totally addicted to the celebrity) wants a bit more.

I found Mr. D'Orazio's portraits of men and humanless scenes much less rewarding. Julian Schnabel and Mike Tyson were the exceptions. He captured something there that was quite remarkable.

As Mr. Yau says in his brief essay, "His subjects seem to have stopped for a moment, relaxed and let down their guard." "Some have even transformed themselves into someone unexpected . . . ." For example, you will see a different side of Julia Roberts. "The men . . . project their image of masculinity . . . ." "All of this D'Orazio captures with a painter's eye . . . ." I disagree with that last comment. The images seem to me to be much more sculptural than painterly, and that is to the good.

      Here are my favorites:

Kristen McMenamy, 1986, Shelter Island, New York

Eva Herzigova, 1996, Long Island, New York

      Sofia Loren, 1999, Milano, Italy

Julia Roberts, 1996, Culver City, California

      Frederique, 1996, St. Barth's

Suzanne Lanza, 1986, Peconic Lodge, Shelter Island, New York

Eva Amurri, 1999, New York City (this is quite remarkable and appears on the back of the book's dust jacket)

Mike Tyson (the second one), 1996, Las Vegas, Nevada

Sylvester Stallone, 1996, New York City

      Claudia Schiffer, 2000, London

Eva Amurri and Susan Sarandon, 1999, New York City

Polly Mellen and Leilani, 1992, New York City

Kate Moss, 1995, Glen Cove, New York

Julian Schnabel, 1990, (paint splattered with canvas and easel), Montauk, New York

Courtney Love, 1999, Los Angeles, California

Stella Schnabel with Skull, 1999, New York City

      Drew Barrymore, 1993, Hollywood, California

After you enjoy this book, I suggest that you think about what the book teaches about relaxation. When do you drop your "social mask" to be relaxed and experience yourself more fully? Those who are most relaxed here, look most alive. How can you achieve this more often and benefit from it?

Take off your cares and worries!

      5 out of 5 stars A stellar work!.......2000-12-14

Finally, a book of celebrity photographs which transcends the formula of merely exposing famous skin! Here is a book of rare and intimate sensuality which brings to the viewer's eye a private and lush sensuality which seems coaxed out of the sitters and never forced. D'Orazio is a genius and this book is one of the most amazing gifts I have received in years. I am buying it for several friends as it is a surefire, sophisticated winner. MORE!!

5 out of 5 stars Class & Quality for Grown Ups.......2000-12-12

A classy arrangement of fashion and famous, in the flesh. Top quality paper and dense inks ensure faithful and luscious reproductions without MTV-in-your-face-image-overcrowding. I bought this book as a gift for my husband; I probably should have bought 2 -- one for pin-ups and one for the coffee table!

      5 out of 5 stars Impressive........2000-12-08

Sensual intriguing images showcase D'Orazio's artful style. An elegant and lush volume of work that will add spice to my personal collection. D'Orazio has a style all his own that is truly inspirational. I love this book.

Sante D'Orazio: Pamela Anderson: American Icon

"Blonde bombshell," "It Girl," "Über-babe"—Pamela Anderson, star of the tv series Baywatch and celebrated Playboy playmate, mesmerized the world with a doll's face, a pin-up figure, sexy tattoos and a man-eating smile. In a tradition that extends from Jean Harlow through Brigitte Bardot to Madonna, Pam is the sex goddess of the 21st century. Sante D'Orazio, America's most sought-after celebrity photographer, took his pictures of Pamela Anderson in a one-day session in the fall of 2000 on the terrace of a mansion in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. His images in Pam: American Icon, are both a visual study on the phenomenon of the blonde and a seductive collection of erotica.

2 out of 5 stars It's a big book, but not many pictures........2005-12-30

If you're looking for another Sante D'Orazio collection, packed full of images like his last two books ("A Private View" & "Sante D'Orazio: Photographs"), this is not the book for you. What's not mentioned in the editorial review is that this is a companion piece/catalog for a gallery show held last Spring (2005) in New York. It's all about Pam, but in the end, there are 6-7 unique pictures with 3-5 variations on each image.

In July 1997 Gianni Versace had begun his Fall Collection when his life was tragically cut short. It was up to his sister Donatella to bravely pick up the pieces and finish what her beloved brother had started. That October was Gianni's last collection and Donatella's first. It was an end and new beginning...a metamorphosis and change for the Versaces, a metaphor for life itself.

this book is very much like the previous book entitled 'a private view'. Aside from the book's fewer pages and disapointing lack of new material, this book features much larger immages which appear more inspiring. Well worth having for presentation.
