Book Description
Beginning with a brief history of the region, Israel: Past and Present features overlays of Jerusalem throughout the ages, important religious sites such as the Western Wall and the Church at Kursi, and famed archaeological ruins like Masada and Caesarea. Works of art found at the sites, such
as mosaics, frescoes and sculpture, are explored to learn about the use of these ancient locales and the lives of the people who inhabited them.

Isreal: Past and Present.......2006-07-25
Our Grandson and his wife were in Israel last month. We had seen this book at our church and thought it would be a great memento of all the places they had just visited. They were truly thrilled!
Book Description
The stakes have never been higher in the Middle East: millennia-old conflicts are finding new battlegrounds and age-old ideologies are finding new voices and new martyrs. Democracy is occasionally on the march, but with it comes uncertainty and fear. And, as always, the armies of foreign powers play their role in the drama. In the midst of all of this, there stands a city, small by most standards, where the history and perhaps the very meaning of humanity seems to seep out of the stones themselves. It is the city of our dreams and occasionally our nightmares. It is the Holy City claimed by all. It is Jerusalem.
In this insightful and fascinating book, a preeminent historian and political commentator takes you inside Israel as it once was during the heady days of its founding and as it is today, a complex nation and society under siege. He does so by combining the revelatory insights of a cultural anthropologist and the realism and objectivity of a superb journalist.
In the end, Dying for Jerusalem answers perhaps the ultimate question: why are people who do not want to live in Jerusalem still willing to die for it?
Customer Reviews:
Jerusalem from the 1930s to 2005.......2007-03-06
This book of recollections and reflections encompasses personalities, places, culture, religion, politics, demographics and history. The author lived in Jerusalem from 1938 to the mid 1950s; he compares his recollections of those years with the Jerusalem of today. He covers a wide array of subjects, including archaeology, the Dead Sea scrolls, the history of the Kibbutz and the divisions in Israeli society, from the Haredim (Ultra-Orthodox) to the Post-Zionists, a small group of academics. A typical chapter would start out with famous or obscure personalities from the past and then evolve into a gripping discussion of important issues.
Chapter 4 does a good job of explaining terms like Sephardim, Mizrachim and the Jews that came from North Africa and Asia, whilst the next chapters are devoted to German Jews and their contribution, as well as the famous scholar of Jewish Mysticism Scholem Gershom, and the Hebrew University. The Holocaust and Yad Vashem museum are discussed in chapter 7, Musa Alami and the Arab-Jewish conflict in the next, whilst early Jewish attempts at creating a binational state form the subject matter of chapter 9.
The author is at his most engaging when describing certain sections of Jerusalem - then and now - in the chapters on Talbiyeh, Mea Shearim and Musrara. Other chapters deal with the influx of Russian immigrants that started in 1989, the city's famous holy places and the psychological condition known as Jerusalem Syndrome. The quotes about the city from reference sources published during the 1800s are quite funny and revealing.
In the epilogue, Laqueur laments what he considers the deterioration of Jerusalem, where problems include poverty, municipal debt and demographic challenges. The inner city is not doing well although the satellite towns around the city are prospering. This chapter includes interesting facts on the city's media like the Jerusalem Post, and a long discussion of the old and the contemporary Jaffa Road.
There are 14 black and white illustrations and photographs, the dust jacket contains a portrait and short biography of the author, and the book concludes with an index. One aspect of the author's style is slightly annoying: his extreme detachment and aloofness, and his pessimism about the future of the city. I sincerely hope he is wrong on this. Overall, this is a valuable and informative work about the people, places and recent history of this remarkable city, and a brilliant chronicle about how Jerusalem has changed since the 1950s.
Worthwhile.......2006-05-10
Jerusalem and Israel are not short of books about themselves but they are short of unbiased books and for that this is worth a read. For those who have little insight into Israeli society and only see the headlines and are onyl subejcted to the hate speech of Noam Chomsky and Ed Said, it is worthwhile to read something that is closer to at least being honest regarding the great diversity of the Holy City and the Holy Land. Truly Jerusalem is one tragedy and one great hope and one victory for all involved, as a resident this book is worth a read.

Plenty of very interesting material.......2006-03-06
I like this book. It is written by someone who first arrived in the Levant in 1938 and has seen Jerusalem change quite a bit since then. We read about archaeology, about Golda Meir, about the kibbutzim and Sephardim, about the Hebrew University, about Yad Vashem, about Mea Shearim, and much more. A fascinating chapter deals with what tourist guides have had to say about Jerusalem.
The author makes some excellent points. He admits that Israel is overpopulated (I'd say "land-poor"). He says that Jewish settlements in the Levant prior to the establishment of Israel have "as much to do with colonialism as colonialism has to do with colonoscopy." I agree. He attacks "post-Zionism," and he even finds fault with Ed Said! Good for him! He mentions that Ed Said demanded an "admission of guilt by the Zionists," and then quite properly asks how the Zionists could "apologize for the Arab uprising in December, 1947 following the UN partition plan, and the invasion of the Arab armies in 1948."
On the other hand, I think Laqueur is way too easy on Musa Alami, especially given that he admits that the British 1939 White Paper "was largely his work." To me, that puts significant responsiblity for hundreds of thousands (or more) murders on Alami. I think Alami deserves an enormous amount of criticism for all this.
I also find fault with a line I suspect most others will agree with. Laqueur boasts that "the historical meaning of the university was to educate - to make students smarter and teach them to think. Today there is a real danger that the modern university has become merely a training ground for specific professions - it teaches students to do. Is the university losing its soul?"
As I said, I suspect that most folks will agree with Laqueur. But I sure don't. I am all in favor of universities helping to get students to become smarter, to learn to study, to think better, and so on. But the most important function of a university has to be, in my (perhaps unique) opinion, to teach students subject matter! So, no, I do not think that the university is losing its soul if it does a good job at this!
There are a couple of other places where I feel that Laqueur has gone overboard. He implies that it is "natural" and "patriotic" to fight against real or imagined demographic changes. But I think this would justify genocide. In a similar vein, he implies that many folks who oppose terrorism would themselves be terrorists had they been born Arab! Well, I'm not much into counterfactual histories. And I'm not going to argue questions such as whether if I had wheels, I'd be a garbage truck. But I think it would be strange to claim that had I been born Italian, I'd have supported the Mafia. In fact, I was born American, and I've never been tempted to support the Ku Klux Klan. And I think it would be rather wild to imply that had I been born Arab, I'd support Arab terrorism. I'm deducting a star from an otherwise fine book for all this.

Israel: Past & Present is a beautifully produced guide to the 16 top archeological sites in Israel. It uses pictures and overlays to illustrate what the sites look like now and how they would have appeared in their heyday, centuries ago. For Tiberias, for example, the guide provides some pivotal history--including its founding by Herod Antipas around A.D. 18, its fortification against the Great Revolt in A.D. 66, the Arab takeover in A.D. 636, the arrival of the crusaders in the 12th century, and all the subsequent crusader/Saladin battles, plus the restoration of the city walls in 1562 and the earthquake in 1837 that mangled those walls. There's a picture of Tiberias today, with sections of the ancient walls poking out among trees, cars, restaurants, and hotels, and an overlay with cutouts for the remnant walls that shows the 18th-century southern wall built on crusader fortification foundations. This is a lovely book from which to learn about Israel, inspire those interested in its history, and plan for a trip. --Stephanie Gold

Tour Guide for Traveling to the Past.......2004-06-20
This handy little spiral-bound book has thick pages and wonderful photographs of historic sites in Israel. It is a virtual tour book of ancient Israel. The plastic graphic overlays for each page lets you see what the same scene might have looked like in ancient times. This is an excellent study help that allows you to visualize the buildings and places in the time of Jesus. The back of each page provides explanations of the historical and religious significance of the site. The rest of the book includes a glossary, a brief synopsis of ancient history, and maps to pull it all together. Though published by Frommer's, I would suggest that this is wonderful study guide for any student of the Bible, not just travelers to the Middle East. From the fortress at Masada to the church at Kursi, this collection gives you a tour of ancient sites and transports you to that world in a way other books cannot.
Best short pictorial summary of the history of Israel ever.......1999-11-20
Book uses unique overlay technique that allows the reader to see what a historical site looks like today as well as what it looked like in its prime. Excellent reference material for pilgrims to the Holy Land. I bought it in Israel and bought three more for friends when I got home.
Outstanding visual reference to famous sites........1999-05-25
Trying to picture the past is often diffcult. This book is an outstanding reference and visual aid for anyone touring or studing Israel. Each of the major sites is shown today and with an overlay of it's former glory.

Book Description
Since the events of September 11, 2001, students and people everywhere are filled with questions about Islam. What do Muslims believe? Who is Osama bin Laden? What is a jihad? Even though Islam is a major religion with more than one billion followers worldwide and more than six million in the United States alone, there is still uncertainty and misunderstanding about the ideas, tenets, and practice of Islam. Understanding Islam and the people who believe in it has become crucially important in the greater world. The Islamic World: Past and Present is the ideal source for fostering understanding and answering questions. John Esposito's acclaimed four-volume The Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World (1995) set the standard in references on Islam. Adapted from this award-winning set, The Islamic World: Past and Present brings all the scholarship and information of the original to general readers and college and high school students. In addition to the more approachable language and user-friendly page layout, this reference covers events and changes of the last eight years. It also includes entirely new entries to provide coverage of the pre-modern world of Islam. Containing more than 300 articles, it provides an excellent, comprehensive resource for gaining understanding into a belief system that seems mysterious and incomprehensible to many.

Customer Reviews:
An absolutely wonderful book.......2001-01-15
I had to read this book over this past summer for Leadership Team on my college campus and loved this book. The chapters are short so it is easy to put the book down if something arises (you won't want to though...) and the lessons and insight is simply wonderful. I think that anyone that is of college age or older should read this book and try to take the lessons learned to heart. It reveals the wonder of God and the depth of his love and power like few books I know, and I can't fully explain my love for this book. A definite must read for anyone serious about strengthening and developing their faith! :-)
A Must Have For Christians.......2000-01-22
If you don't want to be challenged as a Christian, do not buy this book. The writers cover many areas of the Christian life from faith to fellowship to what it means to truly be a follower of Jesus. The writing is down to earth and honest . These people have lived what they write about and do not pretend to be super-saints. Every chapter ends with suggestions for further reading which is invaluable. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a deeper, more committed Christian life.

Book Description
Bec has always been the good girl. Growing up with an eccentric celebrity chef mother and a father who suffers from depression, Bec is used to taking care of her two younger siblings and being called the sensible one. But when Becs parents leave for a six-week tour of the U.S., our narrator decides that she is sick of being responsible and is ready for some adventures of her own. She meets a new friend called Jaz, dyes her hair, wins money, discovers guys, and throws her first party. Hanging out with Nick, a gorgeous skateboarder, and Steve, a guy with a tattoo of a fish on his wrist, Bec realizes that maybe she isnt so boring after all. This is a beautifully written coming-of-age story in which one ordinary girl learns what it means, as her mother would say, to lighten up and enjoy the ride.

An honest and intelligent novel.......2006-06-01
In this funny and wise Australian novel, 15-year-old Bec's mother, Vera, is a celebrity chef. Her father, Lewis, is an architect who recently has had a breakdown and been admitted to a mental hospital with severe depression.
It's a black time for Bec's family. Her nine-year-old sister Bing finds some comfort in her new guinea pig, Begonia. Eleven-year-old Josh is glued to his computer and no longer tries to share long-winded information on off-the-wall subjects. Vera drinks too much wine, while Bec composes collages to quell her own sorrow over her father.
Finally, Lewis is released from the hospital. That afternoon, the three kids are home alone when the gate is left open and Begonia escapes. Bing is so upset over her missing pet, which puts a damper on the homecoming --- until Begonia reappears.
Time passes. Just as the family begins to settle back into contentment, Vera and Lewis announce they're going to the United States on a book tour and will be gone for six weeks. Bec is furious but feels she must be a good sport about it. Mrs. Dempster, soon known as "Mrs. D," joins the household as housekeeper in the parents' absence. Unfortunately, Mrs. D is the dullest woman Bec knows.
But Mrs. D is not without her charms. She cooks a mean pizza, watches "The Simpsons" with the kids, feeds them junk food --- and she once knew the Beatles! Although her siblings are soon Mrs. D's fans, Bec doesn't like her. She misses her parents with a fierce dark yearning.
Bec's horoscope predicts great luck, which immediately comes true in a big WOWza way. She also makes a new friend, Jaz --- and meets Jaz's gorgeous older brother. Bec senses a major change happening within herself. Before she knows it, she's acting in a manner that is both foreign and confusing. Can she find her way out of the maze of boy troubles, home disaster and school issues?
There is so much to love about FOLLOW THE BLUE, I don't know where to begin. First of all, it is both humorous and intelligent. The plot is simple yet deep, with subtle twists. Bec is a completely real person who can make the reader laugh out loud and who sometimes makes mistakes. She has adventures but they never feel like comic book episodes, enjoys a refreshing and tender (yet never icky-sweet) relationship with her siblings, and is a caring friend. In addition to this likeable main character, there is a quirky but complex cast (even the adults are multi-layered and believable --- a rather rare accomplishment). And author Brigid Lowry's voice is lyrical and original.
One of the many great pleasures of reading is discovering a new favorite author. I look forward to reading every book this gifted writer has published. Highest recommendation.

Messages about the world around us.......2006-04-02
Follow The Blue by Brigid Lowry is a quaint tale of a suburban girl living in Perth, Australia. Bec has always been a levelheaded girl; she looks out for her two younger siblings, helps her world-famous mother in the kitchen, and maintains her school work. After her father, who has recently suffered a mental breakdown, returns home, her mother and father decided to take a long vacation to promote her mother's new book. This is when Bec decides to live a little. With the aid of a new housekeeper and the love of her siblings Bec meets new friends, has a party, and dives into the crazy world of guys. Throughout the novel, Bec discovers that there is a whole world out there, waiting for her to explore it.
This novel was written in a friendly style, you feel as if Bec is telling her story to an old friend, you. It has a great plot foundation; however I did not feel that the author raised it to its potential glory. Bec is an easy character to identify with but her adventures weren't as thrilling as one might hope. It was a quick read but in the end I didn't feel like Bec had changed much. I felt that it ended too abruptly and that Bec hadn't had a great adventure, instead it seemed like it was only the beginning of exciting things to come. Bec was still mulling over her feelings and opinions as it ended, however, Bec did receive some excellent advice from her housekeeper, Ms. D. Her messages of wisdom are easy to understand and can be used in all aspects of life. It is a nice story of an average girl, but it leaves one feeling a bit confused.

The best book I'll ever read.......2005-12-01
Three words. Read. This. Book. Seriously. This is an awesome book. Bec, the narrator, is believable, honest, and funny. Here's a synopsis of the story: Bec is 15 years old, and living in Perth, Australia. Her mother, Vera, is a celebrity cook. Vera's agent arranges for her to travel around Australia and the US to promote her cookboks. But here's the catch: Vera is only taking Bec's father, Lewis, recently released from a mental hospital, with her. This leaves Bec, her brother Josh, and her sister Beatrice, a.k.a. "Bing," stranded in Perth with Mrs. Dempster, a strict, boring housekeeper. When Mrs. D breaks her leg, the kids enjoy a week on their own, living off the 500 dollars that Bec won in the lottery, with funny and unexpected results.
This is honestly the best book I'd ever read. It grabs your attention and doesn't let go until the very last page. I feel like Bec is my sister or my best friend. Most writers of teen fiction have already forgotten what it's like to be that age. Brigid Lowry hasn't. In Bec, she creates a character that anyone, even guys, can relate to.
Beautiful........2005-04-18
I can't believe that I am the first to write a review for this great book. As she did in "Guitar Highway Rose", Brigid Lowry manages to create a lyrical imagery of words, strung together, capturing emotions of young teenage girls (her target audience I assume). While her writing may not be the most deep or educational, her novels provide the reader with an overwhelming sense of nostalgia and warmth. This book is comforting and simple; yet just lovely to read, over and over again.

Very True!.......2000-07-25
I haven't read this book yet! Yet I am here to give a review on it. I saw this book in the hands of a young lady, who was siting at an inter-city bus terminal with a relative of hers. She was laughing and smiling and laughing and smiling the whole time I was there. Even when she stopped for a while to listen to her relative she was having a smile on her face and then again she started smiling and luaghing. I wondered what was the secret behind her immense happiness. Then I looked at this book in her hands with a finger inside the book as a bookmark. I read the title of the book and it was 'Always Follow Your Dreams'. No doubt she might have always been following her dreams, that's why she was so happy and care free. I at once decided to get hold a copy of this book and here I am to buy it.

Book Description
This book is for all those who have looked to the future and heard destiny whispering to their hearts. The poems and writings featured here explore how the magic of belief and self-confidence can propel you to the highest levels of achievement. They affirm the power of goal-setting to inspire you, guide you, and lead you to the world you've always imagined. They remind you that obstacles and even occasional failures are a natural part of the learning process. In the end, they honor and celebrate the greatest journey you can take in your life: transforming your dreams into reality.
FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS WHEREVER THEY LEAD YOU contains some of the best advice you could ever give to anyone else... or hear for yourself. Best of all, you can turn to these pages time and again for renewed inspiration, encouragement, and motivation as you travel the path to your destiny.
"Don't ever give up your dreams... and never leave them behind. Find them; make them yours, and all through your life, cherish them, and never let them go." - Elisa Costanza
