4 out of 5 stars For All Who Love Irish Music.......2006-02-12

"Cycling around Ireland in search of traditional music, David Wilson follows the coastline from Presbyterian Islandmagee to Gaelic Cape Clear and back up north from Dublin to Belfast. Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin Whistle takes us on a journey across wild open spaces and through crowded pubs and festivals that pulse with energy and life. This is the Ireland of... More fiddles, harps, and flutes, butterflies on bog roads, Country-and-Irish songs, Ulster Fries, storytelling, yarnspinning, and jigs and reels to the crack of dawn. As he travels through the North, Wilson gets beneath the surface to portray both the tragedy and comedy of everyday life inside the Protestant and Catholic communities. Aware of the polarized image that each side has of the other, he emphasizes the importance of finding common ground and asserting the middle against the extremes. Just as traditional Irish music is characterized by ornamentations and elaborations on a melodic theme, Ireland, a Bicycle, and a Tin Whistle is full of variations and wanderings on the theme of the trip itself. And just as traditional Irish musicians will follow a sad slow air with a lively foot-tapping reel, Wilson's mood ranges from the nostalgic and reflective to the irreverent and mischievous. If there is a lament in one ear, there is always a song in the other." (review from MSN Shopping site)

"Ireland, a Bicycle and a Tin Whistle is part travelogue, part social commentary, with a bit of history, a lot of Irish character and a strong thread of music running throughout. Wilson's colorful, descriptive prose at times approaches poetry in its style. Read this book for a real slice of Irish culture; it will sharpen your desire to see Ireland and its people for yourself, or it will bring your own memories of Ireland into distinct and vivid focus.
Whether or not you've been to Ireland, whether or not you ever plan to go, you could do much worse for yourself than to see it through Wilson's eyes." (review from Rambles - A Cultural Arts Magazine)

4 out of 5 stars Great road trip with a fine soundtrack.......2004-02-11

Lucky for us, Mr. Wilson stops drinking enough for most of the trip to tell us of his musical journey round the coast of Ireland. He writes well and integrates some Irish history into his personal experiences. Best of all he seems to hit all the musical hotspots on the west coast from Donegal, where he hears Altan, past Sligo and Westport and Matt Molloy's pub to Clifden, where he hears Kevin Burke and Andy Irvine in a pub session, down the coast to the once wonderful Doolin where he hears a loser singing James Taylor songs, then on to the traditional music mecca of Miltown Malbay and the Willie Clancy festival. His descriptions of sessions are great and he knows his tunes. He works in some history of Irish music as he pedals his bike through potholes, up hills in blasting rain, and across sunny vistas. There's some laugh out loud humor but he doesn't imitate the Dave Barry style (as in McCarthy's Bar). Too often he descends into drunken oblivion and tells us all about it, as if to make sure we appreciate the truth behind the stereotype of the drunken Irish. Minus a star for the hangovers.

5 out of 5 stars Get me bike!.......2002-02-06

I've been to Ireland twice and when I go I never have a hotel reservation, a set itinerary or a care in the world. I immerse myself in the culture and people of Ireland and go where the locals/journey takes me.

Before I go I like to read about similar journeys through the greatest country on the planet. Mr. Wilson has captured what it's like to travel through the countryside, cities and coastal villages of Ireland. It's not just the scenery that endears people to the emerald isle... it's the people, their sense of humor, outlook on life and how they spend their day.

If you want a book that puts you in the middle of an Irish pub with a "three-pint-buzz", listening to traditional music with perma-grin on your face... then grab Mr. Wilson's tale of his Irish Journey. A great read for the plane ride over.

3 out of 5 stars Northern Ireland?.......2007-05-29

This book does not have a single ride in Northern Ireland. I wound up buying an out-of-print copy of The Lonely Planet Guide to Cycling Ireland to plan my trip. Since I couldn't use it I do not have any criticism on the rest of the content. Safe riding!

3 out of 5 stars Best Used in Conjuction with Other Resources.......2006-06-30

I bought this book before my first bike trip in Ireland, as a couple of the itineraries were similar to ones the group I was touring with would be taking. Plus, I planned on (and eventually did) further bike trips in Ireland.

As itineraries go, these aren't bad. The directions aren't always perfect, but neither were the ones we were given by the tour company. As another reviewer mentioned, you should alway purchase good maps! Even then, you can still make a wrong turn and get lost. In that case, don't hesitate to stop and ask for directions on the best way to get back to your intended route!!

The author himself says that you need another guide or resource for places to stay (i.e., Bed & Breakfasts). There are also better guides for the sites along the routes, once you know the route you're taking. And if you're really interested in reading up on Irish History before you go, get a different book--almost every other guide book I've ever read did a better job of doing a brief overview.

Still in all, this is a good resource for starting to plan your trip; just remember not to depend on it alone!

5 out of 5 stars Three Bike Trips to Ireland.......2001-10-17

My friend from Canada wanted to tour Ireland based on a picture he saw on a co-worker's desk. His co-worker had toured Ireland and had nothing but good things to say. He asked me and of course, I said YES! Even though I biked recreationally, I had no idea what I was in for. I bought this book and we used it for all 3 trips (1998, 1999, 2000). In all 3 years, we cycling the last two weeks of September. I feel like writing my own cycling book as we've learned a lot in the three tours to date. Anyway, back to the review. Reason for end of September, The kids are back in school, the tourist trade is widing down, the B&B's are still open & there's less cars on the road! I would do this for any country.

I find a lot of the bike book reviews complain about map detail in the books, not finding their way according to the book or not according. You should buy a bike book as a reference only and a good Michelin-like map. Keep an open mind with the book, use a good map & yeah, if you get lost, it's another adventure awaiting you.

I liked the author's write up on the history of Ireland, always good to know a little about the country you're touring. We looked at the book's routes and then transposed them to the Michelin map for actual riding. I had a handlebar bag with an enclosed topside map bag so you can read your route without stopping. The Ireland by Bike book was always at hand. In 3 years, it's a little weathered but will always stay in my collection of books.

The authors mileage was accurate, the tips along the way, the scenery spots that are off the beaten path. An example would be to stop at the signpost 2 miles out of a town, find the lane, walk up the lane 1/2 mile and your see this round fort. We saw things we would never have if it weren't for this book. Excellent examples of things like this thruout. Music pubs, B&Bs, just an excellent book.

I thought all the .... By Bike books would have a common standard but is not the case. Beware before you buy, they are not all like Ireland By Bike as far as detail.

If you want to ride 30 - 50 miles a day, stop to see the sights and enjoy the country, the people, the Guiness, this is the book for Ireland.

Does not cover Northern Ireland. The author never rode into.

Now we're looking for another country to tour now that we've done all of ireland.

2 out of 5 stars Helpful as a tourist, not as a cyclist.......2000-08-10

As a tourist, this book was helpful, but as a cyclist it was not. The maps were very difficult to follow and didn't include street information--they were basically a map of Ireland with a line going from city to city, sometimes including road names but not always. Ireland is roughly the size of New England so at a street level, the map was fairly useless.

For example, the tour from Dublin to Wicklow (the first tour in the book) began with from the center of town, "follow the signs to Dun Logherie. Once in Dun Logherie..." Now you would think that Dublin was packed full of signs pointing the way, but it isn't; in fact it is very easy to get lost (which is how I spent most of my time on the first day).

4/5ths of the chapter on this first bike tour was about things to do in Dublin and Wicklow and not how to find your way around. This wouldn't be so bad if finding my way around was easy but it's not (Ireland is notorious for this) and the reason I bought this book was so that I *could* find my way around. Instead, I had to buy street maps, regional maps and spent a fair amount of time packing and unpacking things.

In some places the book was misleading. It mentioned that you cannot take bicycles on the Motorways but it didn't mention that most of the National Roads have pedestrian-free bike lanes. It mentioned that you can't take a bike on the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit), but it didn't mention that you can take a bike on Irish Rail.

Well it may have mentioned these things, but I didn't see them because after spending the first day lost, I abandoned this book and just used the maps.

Again, the book was full of useful information about what to do when you get to these places, but it was light on the things that mattered most to me as a cyclist. And frankly, if you're looking for a book on what to do in Ireland, you'll do better with a Frommer's guide or somthing more substantial.

4 out of 5 stars The best book on touring Ireland by bike.......1999-09-11

I bought a number of books before a recent bicycle trip to Ireland to help me plan routes and I found that this book was the most useful. It is very well laid out and enjoyable to read. If I did the trip again, this is the book I would rely on. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Beter than all the rest.......2001-06-26

I have just returned from Ireland having cycled from Killarney to Dublin in a clockwise fashion. I cycled 1,054 miles in less than three weeks. While I took M ichelin, Lonely Planet, Irish Tourist Board guides etc., I discarded them all in favour of Cycle Touring Ireland. It was the most incredible companion and I followed it faithfully. I just wish I could put Brendan on a personal retainer and have him write Cycle Touring Canada, Cycle Touring USA, Cycle Touring France etc. A fantastic job!

    5 out of 5 stars I was pleasantly surprised!.......2000-12-07

I didn't think that this book could offer me anything new about Ireland's highways and byways. But I was pleasantly surprised. I have used it mainly on reasonably short trips out of Dublin. It is written in a very readable style and it allows for all levels of ability. There are a few routes that take in glorious mountain views, but yet are not too challenging. I love the fact that every route has a recommended lunch stop - very important!. I am looking forward to trying some of the routes in the west of Ireland, which I love. Hopefully there will be a new edition by the time I have tried all of the routes!

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Functional!.......2000-01-15

I loved this book! It was obviously written by someone who really loves cycling. It is well researched, comprehensive and very easy to use. There are cycle routes suitable for all levels of fitness and the extra information on the scenery, recommended lunch stops etc add greatly to the whole experience. Don't cycle Ireland without it!

In December 1985, veteran traveler and travel writer Eric Newby and his wife, Wanda, set off on a bicycling journey around Ireland. "We were going there, in short, to enjoy ourselves, an unfashionable aspiration in the 1980s," Newby writes with characteristic wit. It was the beginning of winter, "the dead season, as far as weather went," but the journey, with all of its encounters, is filled with a crackling and warm life.

After looking for bicycles and getting informed about modern, computer-designed models, they hop the train for Limerick. Newby's clever, vivid narrative--punctuated by sips of Guinness and tea, torrential winter rains, snarling dogs, a feast of bed and breakfasts, stunning ruins, and unusual characters--traces the dynamics of a relationship on the road. The bicycle provides a cadence well suited to the winding roads running through Ireland's verdant country and its rugged coast--and to Newby's talents. He seems to absorb most everything into the narrative. Using pedal power, he takes in the landscape and its people, along with Ireland's past and present, weaving in headwinds, pub stops, myths, political realities, and conversations to produce a complex picture of Ireland.

Originally published in 1987, Newby's Round Ireland in Low Gear has been reprinted with new maps by Lonely Planet Publications. This is not a manic tale of some bicycling marathon, but rather a journey--and a book--paced for enjoyment. --Byron Ricks

    Book Description

Having decided to explore Ireland by bicycle, Eric and Wanda Newby set out one December - not the best time to ride a bike around the highways and by-ways of the Emerald Isle, even when protected by thermal underwear. From the Cliffs of Moher to St Brigid's Vat, Dublin, the Aran Islands, the Ring of Kerry and Croagh Patrick, their rain-soaked journey is beset by minor disasters ranging from ferocious storms to even more ferocious dogs. Along the way they come across a moving, miracle-working statue of the Virgin, spectacular ruins and the traces of twentieth-century violence, in between stops for Guinness, tea and soda bread. Woven into the narrative is a wealth of information about Irish history and custom - hermits, horse-fairs, peat-cutting and poetry are all touched on in this deft and dazzling blend of myth, fact and quirky details. And, as usual with Eric Newby, this beguiling account is enlivened by a cast of eccentric and utterly engaging characters.

    'Funny, revealing and thoroughly enjoyable.'

5 out of 5 stars Wry Literary Treatment, Not a Light Travelogue.......2005-09-21

Those who have given this work low scores are doing it a serious injustice. It is definitely not an example of perky, predictably upbeat travel writing, but is instead a thoughtful, moody, highly literate and contemplative treatment of a deliberately oddball adventure -- to bicycle through Ireland, at the age of 66, in the chill of winter.

It may be that those who have rated this work poorly are fans of Irish tourism who picked it up expecting it to validate their enthusiasm in a predictable way, and were blindsided when it turned out to be something completely different. But it is far above the norm for travel writing.

The author and his wife both have a great, dry sense of humor, and Newby deftly captures the character of all kinds of amusing types they come in contact with. He is known for his thoughtful travel literature -- in the New York Review of Books recently, Larry McMurty revealed that he has been re-reading one of Newby's other travelogues, 'Slowly Down the Ganges', more or less continuously since it was published in 1964.

    2 out of 5 stars Oddly Flat.......2004-03-17

I slogged my way through half of this book before I gave up. (My usual threshold is 50 pages) Eric & Wanda Newby cycle through Ireland in winter and are suprised/perturbed by the weather (?!!).

Mr. Newby is stangely self-centered. The book is a catalog of their travails with little comment on anyone they meet. I assume that he thought this would be humorous and entertaining, but after awhile I wanted him to shut up about himself and go home or get on with describing Ireland. When he does touch on history the descriptive passages seem to be read wholesale out of various guidebooks, which Newby acknowledges and feel like an add on instead of woven into their narrative. There are a few wonderful pages of landscape description but only enough to rate two stars and far too few to justify 298 pages.

I would not recommend this book. Instead read any of the late Thomas Flanagan's three novels about Ireland, The year of the French, The Tenants of Time or The End of the Hunt. Even Ray Bradbury's Green Shadows, White Whale (about living in Ireland while writing the screenplay for John Huston's film of Moby Dick.)

2 out of 5 stars low mileage from Low Gear.......2002-05-20

can't help but agree with another reviewer and concur that this book neither inspires nor stimulates, an unexpected experience with Eric Newby's writing. The occasional and unwelcome slide into condescension displayed might well be a reflection of the author's mood. I suspect this might have resulted from an almost unbelievably bad choice of travel timing for a book of this nature. Ireland, in winter, on a bicycle? As gloomy a metereological prospect as the literary result. Try Tony Hawkes' 'Round Ireland with a Fridge' for an infinitely more enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Some Gold Nuggets at the end of a lot of Rain.......2002-01-06

The author and his wife, sexagenarians both, took four tours of Ireland in one year in the 1980s, mainly by bicycle. The author has no inclination to conceal his rather acerbic personality, so you may find yourself rooting for the trucks early on. But keep reading, there's many a worthwhile nugget awaiting, and it's easy enough to discard the refuse. By page 291, when the author or his editors or the Lonely Planet reprinters get the spelling of "fuchsia" right on the fourth attempt, you will feel that anything is possible. So when the author cuts short his description of the final leg, decides not to undertake a planned trip to Northern Ireland, and leaves the book in its present rather untrim state, you're apt to feel a considerable sadness.

The maps provided by Lonely Planet add value to this edition.

    1 out of 5 stars A pig in a poke.......2001-08-21

I found this book very disappointing. It is neither a travel book or a history book. Eric Newby's positive approach to life and adventure seems to be missing in this book and I found his attitude towards the people, the weather, the condition of B&B's, the roads and the food very condescending. His complaints about his bicycle sounded to me like a bad workman blaming his tools. Even if you have 21 gears you still need the skills to use them. Why oh why does he complain about the weather when he chooses to cycle around the westernmost outpost of Europe in Winter? Want a good cycling book? Then try Miles from Nowhere with a sympathetic author who gets into more serious scrapes and comes out of them with better grace and humor than the Newbys.

        Book Description

Irish tells the story of how Glasgow would not have become the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution, had it not been for the labors and skills of the tens of thousands of Irish who flooded in during and following the Great Famine. Nor would there have been the legendary Rangers and Celtic had it not been for the arrival of those hard-pressed immigrants, and the real story of the formation of the two clubs is just one of the many episodes uncovered here. The harrowing experiences and suffering of so many throughout Ireland during the Great Famine is brought home, as are the privations faced and sacrifices made by those fleeing impoverished Ireland on board overcrowded, tiny vessels.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining biography of a professional cyclist.......1999-01-06

This book tells the tale of the rise of one of Ireland's greatest professional cyclists, Stephen Roche. It is co-authored by David Walsh, who also wrote the definitive biography of Ireland's other great professional cyclist, Sean Kelly.

Roche describes his humble beginnings as a milk man apprentice for his father through his rise through the ranks to become only the second cyclist to win the "Triple Crown," the Tour of Italy, The Tour of France and the World Championship in 1987.

Packed with details only an insider would know, Roche and Walsh have written a highly entertaining and informative book about the world of professional cycling, the greatest sport in the world.

            5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2002-12-15

My personal opinion is that this is CLAMPS's finest effort yet- and that's saying something, considering how many CLAMP works I actually read.

The drawings are enough to make me weep at their sheer beauty. When I bought this, I opened it up while walking along the street in the city, and actually stopped to stare at the first page for ages, trying to drink the entire (gory) image in. If you are into manga solely for the art, then X/1999 is for you.

The plot is really starting to pick up at this point. Slight warning- most of what I say from now on will contain spoilers.

This manga begins with the intensly gory image of Kamui's aunt 'giving birth' to one of the sacred swords. This image has a severe psychological affect on the character Kotori, and a lot of this volume is devoted to her memories of her mother. I don't even like Kotori that much, and I found myself fascinated by her dreamscapes. By watching these, you will see how truly inventive the writers are.

There's also some lovely foreshadowing for Fuma. I really do feel for his character, thanks mostly to the astounding drawings. We also get to see more of the sinister BEAST, which provides the cliff-hanger conclusion to this volume.

I've been a fan of the X/1999 series since I saw a handful of episodes at an anime screening, and the manga just really takes the cake- and if manga had mouths, well it would eat the cake as well. The only problem- I've been unable to find Volume Eight anywhere! If you're going to start buying this series, then I suggest that you prepare to give up quite a bit of money- once you start, you won't be able to stop.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book!.......2001-01-12

In this, as in the other books of the X/1999 series, CLAMP continues to amaze American readers with beautiful imagery and enthralling story. I would definetly reccomed it for anyone who has read the previous books. If you haven't, I implore you to start with the first book or face the neverending confusion of starting in the middle of a Manga series.
