A good way to brush up on Hungarian.......2005-07-05
I took one term of Hungarian in college, and I've been to Hungary a few times (but only for a few days each time). So I tried getting this book to relearn some of the language before going back to Hungary this year. It helped me do just that, and I was able to converse with plenty of non-English speaking Hungarians. This is a well-written book.
But how much will this book help you if you don't know Hungarian at all? I'm not so sure. To communicate in a language, I think you really need to hear it spoken and painstakingly learn a bunch of vocabulary words (I like using flashcards to do this). I think it will be more of a help to those who already know something about the language, or at least have access to someone who can help them practice it.
I'm glad I got this book. I recommend it.
Excellent New Hungarian Phrasebook!.......2005-04-03
Well, I am a native speaker of Hungarian myself, so I was quite curious to see this book.
For the most part, I found it very good.
The main part of the book, the phrases are quite good and natural - it really shows that they had native speakers check it.
The phrases cover all sorts of issues from shopping to visiting a doctor or even dating and having sex!
The boxed texts on culture are also quite good and often amusing.
It has only 12 pages on grammar, but that's quite spot on.
It does include a box on present tense verb conjugation (taking vowel harmony into account!), and has even devoted a whole page to conjugating four common, but irregular verbs (come, go, eat, drink). Another box conjugates "to be" and yet another shows the suffixes for possessions. I guess it's quite OK for the space.
The 2000 word dictionary at the back is quite comprehensive.
A weaker point is the "phonetical transliteration" system used - Hungarian is written fully phonetically in its original form (thankfully also presented here), but the phonetical transliteration provided here for English-speakers may result in blank looks in many cases - you could always choose to ignore it.
The intro contains useful facts about the history and roots of the language, though the map showing where Hungarian is supposedly spoken might raise some eyebrows in neighbouring countries! ;-)
The layout is attractive, with color illustrations.
I even like the cover (different from what is shown on Amazon)- certainly better than a kitshy horseman or traditionally clad dancer could have been! ;-)
Overall: RECOMMENDED.
If you are planning to spend any time away from the major cities and tourist areas, you will find it VERY useful!

Learning the Czech language.......2007-10-18
Of all the Czech language aids I have, this phrasebook is the best organized and the easiest to understand. This is an excellant book for the beginner in the language, but also very useful for someone with a bit of familiarity with the language. It will be my pocket companion on my next trip to Prague.
Great book.......2007-09-28
This book is really handy for traveling to Prague - It gives good advice that you might not think of otherwise. Definitely worth the money!!
Useful and pretty well organized.......2007-06-02
Although the version of this phrase book that I used was a 2004, assuming that they have not changed it much, I would certainly recommend this book. I used it extensively when I was in Prague and the Czech Republic for three months, and most of the time it proved to be just what I required. It is very portable -- fits well in a back pocket -- and was easy to use on the whole.

Lonely Planet or Berlitz?.......2007-09-14
This phrase book is meant to provide Berlitz some competition. I consider LP to be slightly more useful because i) short paragraphs are included about important social behavior and ii) there are more words in the dictionary. I found the arrangement in LP better for studying. Berlitz addresses a greater variety of situations.

Customer Reviews:
Croatian Lonely Planet Phrasebook.......2007-08-24
This is an excellent book if you want to use or read some Croatian words or phrases while you visit that country. It is easy to use and offers useful phrases for travelers. We stayed in Dubrovnik. The people all spoke several lanuages, including English, there. The phrasebook was not a necessity in Dubrovnik, but when I travel, I find that people of a specific region enjoy hearing travelers use some of the local language. I enjoy using it, too. This book helped me engage the people of the city!
Pretty good, especially for a Croatian book.......2007-07-24
I've lived in Croatia and I've studied the language for about 5 years, so I know it to a reasonable degree of fluency. This book is great for communication, and as a reference for phrases, questions or comments that one might be a little lost on otherwise, even as a speaker of the language. I would agree that there are mistakes (like the mixing up of the words "boyfriend" and "girlfriend"... did they do that on purpose?) but honestly, I've gone through tons of Croatian language-learning, grammar and phrase books, and this is by far the most useful for its purpose. An earlier review cited the use of Serbian words as a problem, but while I think a revision wouldn't be a bad idea, this product still is completely worth it in that anyone who actually needs to use this, i.e. not a native speaker, will probably be forgiven and/or totally appreciated for attempting to speak at all. As far as grammar goes, yeah, there's not much in it, but if you're looking for grammar, use Thomas F. Magner's Introduction to the Croatian and Serbian language, and for conversation, Teach Yourself Croatian. However, with both of those being so much larger, you wouldn't want to take them on a day trip, so for light travel, this is a must-have.
How do you say "Wait!, I have a phrase book." in croatian?.......2007-05-17
This book was indispensable. Between this and Pimsler's Learn Croatian 1 we managed to get by fairly well. There were definitely a few frustrating moments though. The book fell through on such things as "Wait, I have a phrasebook" and "Sandwich" in the dictionary. If you want to talk about how your sex life or drug use is going however, you'll be well equipped. I definitely recommend it. I also recommend a guidebook. Between lonely planet, frommer's and DK I would rank frommer's as the most useful, DK with the best pictures, and lonely planet as acceptable. Oh . . . the country is amazing, definitely go . . .
Surprisingly good for a pocket book.......2006-04-03
This book covers the basics in a way that is simple and useful. Three topics are covered in the book: the basic grammar, useful phrases and a 2000 word dictionary. The book is small enough to fit in your pocket and covers each of these topics with an efficient layout.
For the grammar, first of all its usually missing from most phrasebooks and dictionaries. But, when you find a grammar section, its usually not useful for travel because its too much detail. For example, in "Barron's TravelWise Croatian" book, four standard verb endings (-am,-jem,-em,-im) are described for present tense conjugation. What that book lacks is information to figure out which ending goes with which verb. In this book, a "rule of thumb" way to add a single ending to all verbs is described. Its simplier to learn and works well with the format of the book. Its not prefect so maybe language experts cringe but its practical.
For the phrases, it is a majority of the book. A couple things I liked were that for phrases that begin with the same words, the words are not repeated. The other is it includes an English pronunciation hint for the Croatian phrase. Both might seem like common sense but several books don't do this.
My main criticism with this book is the English pronunciation hint seems strange. The stressed syllable uses italics instead a bold font. And the transliteration use combinations of english letters for one sound. Compare these "ya ne go-vorim" and "ya ne gaw-vaw-reem". Which is easier to use?
For the dictionary, it is not huge but its a two way dictionary with gender and pronunciation. Its more words than you can memorize for a trip anyway. There is also a separate culinary reader for looking up food dishes. If there were a second edition to this book, the author should fine tune the vocabulary in this book. Its kind of funny seeing "Tequila" as a drink but not finding "Lobster" or "Squid" for food. Why go to Croatia to drink tequila? And of course its translates to "Te-kee-le".
This book is not prefect so it gets 4 stars not 5. For a Croatian language reference book that fits in your pocket this is the best book out there. If you have more time to study, review the "Teach yourself", "Colloquial" and "Barron's" Croatian books.
Full of errors.......2005-06-30
This should be a good phrase book. All new phrase books from Lonely Planet are modelled on the same base, and that base is modern and extensive. So why is this Croatian phrasebook so bad despite being modelled on the same base.
Silly mistakes:
To take one funny example, the Croatian phrase "I'm here with my boyfriend" is translated by the English phrase "I'm here with my girlfriend". Of course, the Croatian phrase "I'm here with my girlfriend" is translated as "I'm here with my boyfriend". Needless to say, this could make for some funny situations.
Confusion with Serbian:
Despite being a Croatian phrase book, this book often uses the Serbian form of a word instead of the Croatian one. Although the scars of the wars are healing, this is not the best way to make friends.
Outdated words:
Many of the words and phrases used are correct, but very outdated and never used in normal speech.
Grammatical errors:
Now and then, you see things like "poslati cu", even a beginner would know that it's "poslat cu".
The silly mistakes and the grammatical errors are not very common, but the confusion with Serbian and the use of outdated words is much too common. The language used often sounds stilted.

EVERY COACH NEEDS THIS BOOK........2006-11-07
GREAT FOR RUNNING DRILLS. IF YOU HAVE THE SPEED YOUR WHOLE OFFENSE COULD BE GEARED TO THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY FAST BREAK. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TEAM SPEED THIS BOOK IS STILL A USEFUL TOOL FOR ANY LEVEL OF PLAY.
Book Description
Offers basic fundamentals and techniques for creating and taking advantage of fast break opportunities. Covers shaping the fast break, coaching fast break situations, fast breaking after a missed field goal, fast breaking following a made field goal, fast breaking from the free throw line, fast breaking against various zone defenses, and fast breaking from the various pressing defenses. Also includes rebounding, outlet-pass, two-, three-, and four-man drills used to perfect the fast break. Features over 250 diagrams and illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Too wide and shallow.......2006-06-25
Coach Ellis did a very good job of showing how to fast break out of several different situations -- made baskets, free throws, rebounds, fast breaking out of zones, fast breaking off a press. In this respect, his book is very thorough. If you can implement this, and get your team to run & fast break in each of these situations, you'll be a tough team to beat.
However, something I've observed in coaching: it doesn't matter how good your system is, if you can't teach it, it's useless. In fact, I would argue that teaching a lousy system impeccably well will result in more success than teaching an impeccable system lousy.
Unfortunately Coach Ellis didn't have any suggestions on how to teach your team to fast break out of each of these situations. He only had a short chapter at the end of the book that had drills for teaching fast break in general, but as far as teaching tips, that was it.
As a college coach, Coach Ellis has the option to recruit only kids that a) already know how to execute in a running game b) are exceptionally fast learners. For High School coaches like myself, who are dealt a hand and must play it, this book was almost useless. How about some breakdown drills for teaching the fast break out of each of these situations? How about some drills for teaching the fundamental skills involved? The High School kids I've worked with won't really learn a system well just by drawing the diagrams on the board, walking through it, and then going at it over and over. For whatever reason, that's not how teaching and learning work.
The one part of the book that I found interesting was how to fast break out of a zone press. Only because he made some interesting, practical points when talking about the zone press. It got me excited about the defense he was describing, not the transition offense.
I'm glad I bought this book used, rather than new. I would only recommend this book to a coach that is a brilliantly gifted teacher (and can therefore easily see how to teach everything here) but is an unimaginative dolt at devising a strategy. I don't personally know anybody like that.
Detailed situations for an effective Fast Break.......2000-06-21
All the situations for developing an effective Fast Break are explained. Cliff ELLIS illustrated these situations with Fast Break continuities he had already used. All the choice made inside the Fast Break continuities are explained. It means that you will have to read very carefully all the explanation if you don't want to miss relevant informations. However, we expect to find other types of drills. All the drills are known and well known. This part of the book is really poor.
Fast Break Basketball Is The Playing Style Of Todays B-Ball.......2000-06-20
This book is great for any coach. Todays basketball calls on the use of the fast break to score points. Everybody now is more athletic than ever before and the fastbreak is the only way to put their athletisim to use. A great book that teaches everything about a fast break and how it works.after getting a rebound, this book tells you what to do to get into a fast break. Definitly worth buying. thank you

Book Description
In a basketball game, the mind flows. Later, memory serves up moments-short takes. Here are twelve poems delivered in short, quick lines that press and twist and streak their way downcourt toward their goal with practiced, impressive dexterity. The feeling is of the inner eye and ear, alert and awake, storing up memories. Competition is everywhere. Voices taunt, swagger, defend. Bodies dare and challenge. And yet, amid the heart-pounding action, the athletic stop-starts, come moments of quiet, even odd reflection-the sound of sneakers on a wood floor, for instance.
Small photographs capture suspended moments and pattern their way across colorful backgrounds in accompaniment to the energetic images of the poetry. Once again drawing on the rhythms of jazz and hip-hop, Charles Smith offers a fitting companion to his previous two books about The Game: Rimshots, an ALA Notable Book, and the highly praised Tall Tales.

Customer Reviews:
Sloppy and incomplete.......2003-07-31
I really wanted to like this book, but after reading through it I came away unsatisfied:
* I don't think the author proved his thesis that FSU's offense is either appropriate for or easily adapted to high school football.
* There were far too many mistakes in the text and diagrams for the price of the book.
* The author only spends 4 pages on the no-huddle aspect of the offense, surely the "fast break" in "fast break football".
In short, the book gives the impression of a quick and dirty attempt to write a book on Bobby Bowden's offense.
For that matter, Wilkes doesn't even establish that he is writing about only one offense. FSU and Bowden have made dramatic changes in their offensive thinking over the years, but Wilkes attempts to shoehorn all of it into one book, even plays like the fullback trap which FSU hasn't emphasized for years. The result looks less like a coherent offense than it does a great big grab-bag of formations (several of which are mislabeled in the book) and plays.
Only moderately recommended. I hope Coach Wilkes does himself and his readers a favor and takes the time to revise this book properly and bring out a clean edition.
This book is worth the price.......2002-11-10
The good news is that this book has many good ideas. That said, this book is riddled with errors and is very difficult to read. The author fails to define his terms and it is often impossible to know what he is really saying. He makes mistakes in the text, mistakes in the diagrams, and omissions abound e.g. in defining his formations one of the diagrams is completely wrong, we never find out who the 1 and 2 backs are, he leaves out two formations he later uses, and he never defines what he means by various defensive techniques, for the first play 46 toss sweep he diagrams a play using the term "switch call" without defining it and claims a technique 9 when none is diagramed, on the same page he forgets to draw the assignment for a guard and claims the play is vs a 4-3 when the diagram is a 5-2. The rest of the book is of the same quality. I am still glad I bought the book because of the many ideas presented. Too bad this coach did not have anyone edit the book before publishing.
Great Offense.......2002-10-04
Wayne Wilkes has done a great job of bringing the FSU Offense to the high school level. For anyone who is familiar with Bobby Bowden football, this is a book you must have.
For any coach, this is an offense that you must use.
Pretty Well Done.......2002-03-17
This book contains a simple, effective system for high school football. The only thing preventing a perfect score is that a few of the diagrams are mislabled.
florida state x's&o's for your personal pleasure.......2001-07-26
wayne wilkes gives you exactly what he says in this book. a simplified version of the florida state offense. it is not paticularly extensive, but it has a fair sampling of every type of play, blocking, and pattern. not paticularly useful if your already familiar with the offense, but a great introductory to those who are not.

Customer Reviews:
This book covers a smorgosbord of topics for the entrepreneur to read about if her biz can take off in a successful direction........2007-06-24
It was a pleasure to purchase and read this book on and off during the past week. At first glance I thought I was going to give it a 4 star rating because I did not find the title all that helpful in introducing the book to me. And the first couple of chapters didn't really make me want to read further. It turns out that the book is a marketing piece for the author's law practice. Once I figured that out, I forgave him for such a lousy title and opening few chapters.
The chapters included are as follows:
1. Understanding the "grow fast grow right" principles
2. Developing a business growth plan
3. Effective management of business marriages
4. Leadership and governance in a post-Sarbanes-Oxley world
5. Recruiting, motivating, and rewarding your team
6. Effective use of boards and professional advisors
7. Developing a capital formation strategy
8. Strategies for raising equity capital
9. Effective use of debt capital
10. Mergers and acquisitions as growth drivers
11. Intellectual asset management and harvesting
12. Licensing and franchising
13. Joint ventures and strategic alliances
14. Building effective channel partner relationships
I'm a volunteer SCORE counselor and I read books like the instant one so I will find a few that I can recommend to my SCORE clients. Over the past week I have already recommended this book twice. One client wanted to know about the Private Place Memorandum (PPM) process, and this book covers the subject at Chapter 8. I also recommended Alpha Teach Yourself Business Plans (ISBN: 0028642163) to the client since it explains how to write a PPM.
Some of the topics covered are for larger businesses, while many are for the startup or small business. I particularly liked chapters 6 through 11. Even though I liked the book a lot, I would have liked it better if some of the topics had been saved for another book and the the remaining chapters were more fully developed and integrated so I would have had a specific label I could tag the book with. As it is, the book comes across as a smorgosbord of topics rather than as a cohesive treatise. 5 stars!
