3 out of 5 stars Nice to have, but...........2007-06-18

Getting ready for our massive trip to Devon & Cornwall last fall, my wife & I bought just about every travel book on the subjects we could get our hands on. We had high hopes for this one. It details lots of little pubs and restaurants in the area, along with the "usual" sites that you'll find in every book.
Bottom line- the pubs in here were too rich for our blood- we are more into the sawdust and woodsmoke 'locals only' kind of place, not the wealthy Londoner on holiday kind of place. But, if that's your cup of tea, this book provides reasonable detail and a fair amount of information. I'd recommend, however, Lonely Planet, for anyone with a reasonable budget. And by reasonable, I mean less than $80 for supper.

Adventure travel has become big business; in 1996 alone, 15 million Americans spent roughly $8 billion on adventure travel and related gear, leading outfitters and packagers to carve up the globe into customized adventures. In this compilation of challenging outings to remote corners of the globe, Noland attempts to help adventure travelers hook up with the trips of their dreams.

Three brief sections prime us for travel, advising how to make the basic choices of what trip and how to prepare. What sorts of details does Noland discuss in "Getting Ready"? Not the stuff of Travel 101--more like helicopter evacuation insurance and malaria pills.

Forty arduous adventures across seven continents follow; there are those to inspire fear and trembling-- "The Arctic: Skiing to the North Pole"; "Venezuela: Living with the Fierce People"; and "Nepal/Tibet: Climbing Mount Everest"--as well as those for the more sensuously inclined--"Belize: Kayaking the Offshore Islands" and "Portugal: Cycling in Wine Country." Each excursion is followed by recommendations of appropriate outfitters and reading material, a brief dispatch on what to expect, and a rating of the challenges that lie ahead.

Blessed with an enormous capacity for risk-taking, a sense of humor, and an impressive knowledge of the remote corners of the world, Noland has designed both a paean to the art of travel and, for the daring, an informative how-to guide.

              3 out of 5 stars Ho hum.......2007-01-09

David Nolan's guidebook is described as "40 ultimate adventures for the modern nomad -- from crossing the Sahara to bicycling through Vietnam." And there's a chapter on Hawaii.
Nolan, a writer for Outside magazine, says a true travel adventure should have the traveler asking himself, at least once, "What the (blank) am I doing here?"
But that standard, the Hawaii chapter turns out to be pretty small beer. Nolan drives up Haleakala Highway on Maui, admires the dawn, then hikes down Sliding Sands Trail. He does not say how he got out, so I assume he went back up Sliding Sands.
If he had seen either Kaupo Gap or Switchbacks (Halemau`u), he probably would have mentioned it.
Or perhaps not. This is a man who has hiked Nepal and Kilimanjaro. He has seen scenery.
Though he says you can have fun in Hawaii "hiking the out islands" (Where did he get that? The local term is "Neighbor Islands."), he rates it low on challenge.
On his scale of one to five, hiking in Hawaii rates only a two or three for physical challenge, one to three for mental challenge and one for skills needed.
So take the Hawaiian hiking vacation first. Put off the rafting trip down the Omo River in Ethiopia for later, in case you pick up blackwater fever and don't make it back.
Actually, hiking in Hawaii can be exciting, though the guided tours are safe enough. Nolan does not mention the unguided hikers who vanish, whose bones are found in the tops of tall trees or whose bodies are found by accident by searchers looking for somebody else.
"Travels Along the Edge" doesn't do much to give Hawaii a reputation as an exotic land of danger, but it has a frank introductory section on traveling outside the resort system.
Parts of it appear to be pitched to morons. While advising edge travelers to bring hiking boots, Nolan tells a tale of a woman who showed up for a trek in Nepal without them.
Well, I've seen a German go down Switchbacks (a sheer cliff about 1,500 feet high) in slippahs (zoris), running.
              That's an adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Read this before you travel to the edge! .......2005-01-27

The appendix alone makes the book a good buy. It is useful in helping you assess the best season to travel, what the mental and physical challenge is for any given destination, and the skills needed. I also enjoyed the authors dry humour, i.e. when he recalls the "what the f*ck am I doing here?" moments of his adventures.

4 out of 5 stars Important book 4 those considering overseas adventure travel.......1998-08-22

This book describes possible travel adventures in five quadrants of the world (North America, South America, Europe & the Middle East, Asia & the Pacific, and Africa). Each quadrant is broken down into 8 travel adventures which take place in different states or countries. The travel essays (which are short) consist of either some of the author's experiences (very helpful & enlightening information) or a historical or cultural story about the area (not very helpful, in my opinion). At the end of each travel essay, the author 1) compares different outfitters, 2) let's you know what to expect (i.e., physical and mental demands as well as necessary skills, if any), 3) lists books for further research on the area, 4) gives a breakdown of the outfitters (cost, phone#, length of trip), and 5) indicates the physical challenge, mental challenge, and skills ratings for the trip.

At the beginning of the book, the author has some very helpful chapters about choosing a trip, choosing an outfitter, and getting ready for a trip.

This book was very helpful for me in starting research for an overseas adventure trip. It describes all kinds of activities and trip variations. It really got me thinking and planning. The descriptions of the outfitters were very helpful too (I have found a web page for nearly each outfitter--that would have been helpful to include in the book); with so many outfitters available, it was helpful to have a few well-known names to begin with. Most of the reading was quite entertaining and informative.

I'm glad I bought this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a well-written/organized book which describes numerous activities/trip variations which are possible in a variety of interesting destinations around the world. I did not give it five stars, because I was disappointed in a few of the chapters which had historical/cultural stories instead of the author's or another traveler's impressions of the region.

5 out of 5 stars Witty, humorous exploration of some really cool trips........1997-10-15

Loved it! Noland makes "adventure travel" real for the armchair explorer. In the spirit of Redmond O'Hanlon, this book describes the ups and downs of moving beyond the conveniences of the 20th century.

Imagine peering over the edge of a live volcano in the black of night, or standing face to face with a roaring, 800-pound silverback gorilla. Science is a dynamic and vital field of study that involves not merely observation and discovery, but also a very real element of danger. This book presents the thrilling stories of 40 female scientists who have faced daunting challenges in the field, in the science lab, and even in the academic community. The women represent a wide range of scientific disciplines, including physical, earth, and life sciences--from ecologists, biologists, and astronomers to volcanologists, speleologists, and crystallographers. Amazing scientists such as Marta Aznar and Dian Fossey are profiled and exciting vignettes describe about their work, passions, struggles, and accomplishments. Discussion questions and references for further study are also included. Grades 4-9. Inspiring to students who are pursuing science as a field of study, this informative and action-packed collection also fosters an appreciation of women's contributions to science and the great efforts required to advance our knowledge of the world. The book is a magnificent reference resource for reports and research papers, and educators can use the stories to launch science units or supplement the science curriculum. Book Description

Don DeLillo—winner of the National Book Award, the William Dean Howells Medal, and the Jerusalem Prize—is one of the most important novelists of the late-twentieth and early-twenty-first centuries. While his work can be understood and taught as prescient and postmodern examples of millennial culture, this book argues that DeLillo's recent novels—White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, and The Body Artist—are more concerned with spiritual crisis. Although DeLillo's worlds are rife with rejection of belief and littered with faithfulness, estrangement, and desperation, his novels provide a balancing moral corrective against the conditions they describe. Speaking the vernacular of contemporary America, DeLillo explores the mysteries of what it means to be human.

I loved this book, I just bought it yesterday. I couldn't putit down, it was so full of feeling. The end was very shocking Icouldn't read it with out crying, I knew what all the characters were going though. I lost a friend last year to drugs. This book teaches very good lessons on the dangers of drugs and how takeing risks can be fatel. If you read this book I hope it teaches you something.

                  5 out of 5 stars Realistic.......1999-10-24

I thought that the book was very good. It showed some good moral values without being boring. The book explains to teens how to deal with problems they face at school and at home. It also had a good storyline that was very creative and realistic at the same time. I recommend this book. It was very interesting and I learned something from this book along with having some fun. It wasn't super boring, and it wasn't unrealistic, either. Things in that book happen. It was fun to read. It wasn't one of those books where everything went perfectly and nothing went wrong. In fact, it was almost exactly the opposite. I like Regina's character. She acts like any other normal teenager. She isn't stupid even though she makes some mistakes. She isn't a goody goody, but she isn't super bad. She's normal. That's what I like about her. It mellows the book out without making it really boring. That is what I like about the book.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome book!.......1999-08-14

Francine Pascals really did herself out this time. I loved this bok. It was so well written! I got so into the book that i felt bad for regina. I felt like i was at the drug party she went to and i was teary eyed when she died. Sweet valley is a GREAT series!

                  4 out of 5 stars A sad romantic novel.......1999-05-20

ON THE EDGE is a book, which once you start it you can not stop reading it. It captures your attention all the way to the end. It fill of bursting tear and pain after you finish the book. The story is about a girl name Regina, who born with a bad heart all her life. She has a boyfriend name Bruce, who dumped her after he met Amy. However, no one would know that Amy was Regina's friend, who steal Bruce away from Regina. Everyone at school knew about it, except Regina. After Regina found it out, she did talk to anyone she who knew all about it all along. Later she met Justin, who everyone knew he is not a easy guy to handle. If you want to know the ending read it yourself. I would highly recommend this book to everyone who like to read romantic novel.

                        Book Description

What 's it really like to be "in the trenches", a real working classroom teacher ? That's what Kurt Kromholtz tries to show as he "spills his guts" in this short, autobiographic portrayal of his struggle to make it as a successful mentor of high school chemistry.in modern times Kurt's eventual satisfaction was not handed to him on a silver platter, but came only after a series of failures and tribulations, each of which taught him a vital lesson in the art of teaching and finally resulted in a number of awards including "Outstanding Secondary Educator of America "( 1975) Teacher of the Year, 1978 ( a school award) and the prestigious" Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Award "(1992 ), the highest recognition conferred by the school, . Kurt overcame some daunting adversities over the course of his career, including a paralyzing stroke in 1995 , all of which he strives to demonstrate, actually served to improve his performance in virtually every aspect of high school teaching. You will relate to this tale if you either are or have been a secondary instructor and if you are now considering a career in this field it could be a vital "how to" handbook for your future success. In addition, many of the roughly three thousand students Kurt taught in his 37 years at this school will likely remember some of the incidents mentioned in this poignant yet humorous story, and might even recognize themselves in the telling. Kurt has always felt that "High School is where it's at..the most exciting place to be on the planet once you figure out how it works!"

A lot of obscure, insignificant internships and very few that you'd really want.

3 out of 5 stars There are better ways to find internships.......1998-10-25

I used this book and mailed out resumes for internship positions, but most of the time I was too late. I found there are better ways to get a good internship. There are also other good internship Web sites. END
