The quest to understand humankind's place in the universe is an old one, perhaps as old as the human species itself. That quest is tinged with science, but also with magic, for, writes the paleontologist Loren Eiseley (1907-1977), a human being "is both pragmatist and mystic. He has been so since the beginning, and it may well be that the quality of his inquiring and perceptive intellect will cause him to remain so till the end."

In this lively, literate set of essays, originally delivered in 1959 as a lecture series at the University of Cincinnati, Eiseley traces the history of science, giving special attention to the 18th and 19th centuries, which witnessed the rise of a kind of scientific inquiry that crossed narrow disciplines. Building on the ideas of Newton and Laplace, for instance, the Scottish scientist James Hutton developed the foundations of historical geology; Hutton's doctoral work had not been in physics but physiology, and his dissertation concerned the circulation of the blood, from which he evidently hit on the idea of considering the earth as a living organism. Eiseley moves on to discuss trends in evolutionary thought, putting in good words for such neglected figures as Jean Lamarck, a "much maligned thinker [who] glimpsed ecological change and adjustment before Darwin." Eiseley's explorations end with an admonition that our scientific understanding may well have outpaced our moral evolution, leading to the danger that "we have created an unbearable last idol for our worship"--namely, ourselves. His wise words remain compelling reading today. --Gregory McNamee

                      Book Description

Loren Eiseley examines what we as a species have become in the late twentieth century. His illuminating and accessible discussion is a characteristically skillful and compelling synthesis of hard scientific theory, factual evidence, personal anecdotes, haunting reflection, and poetic prose.

4 out of 5 stars An Understanding Heart.......2007-08-01

Loren Eiseley is an imaginative writer and developes a reader's interest in his strange life. Eiseley explains his fascination with nature, which began as soon as he could crawl, and this interest was not really supported by anything in his environment. HIs parent's relationship is presented as the boy experienced it, and one feels sympathy for his father, whom Eiseley suggests stayed with his insane wife because of his son. HIs tangled relationship with his mother receives attention at the beginning and end of the book, when she died. It is as if Eisiley himself hasn't digested her impact upon him, which he minimalized as much as he could. For whatever reasons, he became a writer who had to explain interesting things, who thought interesting things, and, yet, was very lonely. It was a lonely life, beautiful though.

5 out of 5 stars A profound meditation on our evolving understanding of the natural world and human nature itself .......2006-11-15

This work is a profound retelling of Mankind's changed understanding not only of the natural world, but of the nature of human nature. Eiseley in his poetic and contemplative prose traces Modern Science's transformation of the picture of Nature Mankind long held. This relates not simply to extending the time- frame of cosmic and terrestial happening, but to rereading the very nature of human nature. But Eiseley does not simply describe the movement from a static world- view of permanent unchangeable species to an evolutionary one of emerging Life, he makes a penentrating critique or certain aspects of Scientific Culture upon human life and Nature itself. And while doing he insists on our holding open an understanding of the Nature which may yet emerge, and the mystery which remains within and perhaps beyond the Universe despite all our progress in understanding.
This is a profound poetic meditation on Nature and Human Nature, and one which however strongly based in fact leaves us with a feeling of question and wonder at what we are and will become.

                      Book Description

Hams Beneath the Firmament, Terri Ford's second books of poems, is a portrait-at-a-gallop, a series of drive-by rhymes, a lively foray into the "jello of elsewhere." It is a book with sex, with budgies, with kissing the dead, and with Mid western livelihoods, with "counting asymptomatic / years." A more rambunctious collection of poems does not exist, its "inkity blue" skies and "the way the wild-eyed speak // of the rapture" spectacularly its own. Original in its descriptions, and allowing pause for reflection amongst its rollercoaster of visions, Hams Beneath the Firmament is a tour-de-force collection.

                        Book Description

Exploring faith and science—considered by many to be polar opposites—this collection of poetry attempts to bridge art and science while conveying a deep conviction to both. This visionary poet is both a skeptic and a true believer, reverently letting opposing images collide and combine. This poetic discussion encourages readers of all traditions not to choose between faith and science, but to be awed by the force fields that exist between them.

                        Book Description

"Good hands, Luke," Dad had said. "Special hands. Strong and sensitive. You can do anything you want with hands like these.

So don't ever put them to bad use."

Luke has good hands. Everybody says so. Good for playing the piano -- just like his father did before he died. And good for climbing -- climbing trees, climbing toward the stars, in search of some peace away from family troubles.

Now Skin and his gang want Luke to do some climbing for them. They want him to climb into Mrs. Little's house to look for something to steal. They want him to prove he's a real part of the gang.

But nobody is ready for what Luke discovers when he does climb into the house. He encounters something so unexpected that it changes everything -- something that unlocks secrets and helps Luke find out exactly who he is and what it is that he's been searching for.

Luke is a highly gifted pianist but is uncertain of his place in the world. His grief over his father's death is still a deep pain for him, and he has turned this grief into a kind of anger at everyone and everything. He can't stand his mother's new boyfriend; he is sullen and rude to his teachers.

The only place he thinks he fits in is with local outcasts Daz, Speed and Skin. Totally ruled by the unstable Skin, all the boys follow Skin's every wish. All of this is just a way to "get through" for Luke, until one night when he is sent into Mrs. Little's house to look for something to steal. Once inside the dark, creepy house he follows the sound of a child's weeping voice and encounters a situation that totally changes his life.

As Luke becomes torn between helping the child and Mrs. Little, he also encounters the wrath of Skin and his gang. There is a great sense of tension as the story winds its way to the final scenes.

Some of the events toward the end of this book feel somewhat forced, but at the same time Tim Bowler is able to maintain a wonderful sense of magic through the characters. FIRMAMENT provides a wonderful coming-of-age story combined with an exciting edge of suspense.

                        Product Description

As debates within the Church over the scientific details of creation become more frequent, the experts seem to grow more entrenched while the rest of us only become more confused. Somewhere between the endless arguments over distant starlight and Carbon-14 dating, calculating the mathematical improbabilities of things that already exist, and parsing ancient Hebrew and Greek, somebody needs to ask the simple question, If 3,500 years of scientific progress can t help modern Christians figure out Genesis, then how could the ancient Israelites possibly have understood it so well? What secret did this newly liberated gaggle of Hebrew nomads take with them out of Egypt that holds the key to understanding God s telling of His own creation story? Beyond the Firmament challenges all creationist camps whether Young-Earth, Old-Earth, or Theistic Evolutionist to step outside of traditional paradigms and recognize how our modern, Western, post-Enlightenment scientific worldview actually blinds us from seeing the simple truth of Creation as it was originally intended; and how our failure to grasp the theological significance of the biblical creation model puts science and faith on a collision course.

                        5 out of 5 stars Challenging.......2007-10-16

Reading Beyond the Firmament challenged me to think more deeply about how I view science in light of my faith. It challenged me to think more deeply than I ever have before about the things of creation and what might science have to say in regard to the details of how it came about. It challenged my mind and enlarged my view of God as the Creator. While I can not say that I agree with everything Gordon Glover agrees with, I can say that he opened my eyes to possiblities I might not have before considered. I love that he constantly reminds us throughout the book that "science is tentative" - it is always changing and so therefore so is man's interpretation of the data. I loved Glover's voice throughout the book - it was humble, and intelligent. His faith is evident and steadfast, and his openness to his own continuing education is inspiring. He really balances well science and theology and shows how they are not meant to be combatants.

5 out of 5 stars A convincing and refreshing book on this decades-old subject.......2007-09-26

Glover has penned a superb treatise on the creation/evolution dilemma. He takes the reader to the true root of the controversy and carefully examines the contributing factors by thoroughly deconstructing and analyzing the current Creationism model. He offers up a model that is theologically sound, while preserving the biblical authority of the divinely inspired text and the validity of science.

The author's communication method is intelligent, yet done in a conversational style with everyday language and concepts. This is refreshing when compared to the overly-academic literary works on the market today.

What made me appreciate this book so much is the target audience the author had in mind, and how he relates to that audience at a very personal level. Glover wants to communicate with Evangelicals, and does so effectively. It is very apparent that the author holds his personal relationship with Christ very dear to his heart.

He recognizes that God divinely inspired the writing of Genesis. From there, Glover guides the reader through the authorial intent of Genesis 1 and evaluates the text as a theological response. His intriguing presentation is persuasive.

While Glover touches on evolutionary science, his primary focus is a treatment of the creation text. This is a must-read for anyone who is researching the never-ending creation/evolution controversy.

5 out of 5 stars A Fresh Approach to Science and the Bible.......2007-09-22

"Why another book on science and faith?" Gordon Glover poses the question himself in the preface of Beyond the Firmament, his first book, released earlier this month by Watertree Press. While Glover offers his owns reasons, I would like to add a few of my own.

The motto of the publisher Watertree Press (also new) is Read. Think. Grow. With this book, their first release, readers will likely do all three. Glover challenges us to step outside our comfortable paradigms and think about issues like the big bang and evolution in new and fresh ways. He takes the reader on a journey of discovery to answer such questions as: What do we know, and how do we know it? What can the Bible tell us about nature? What can nature tell us about itself? What about evolution?

Glover's approach to this subject matter is unique. He does not write from the perspective of a trained scientist. This, I believe, is to his advantage. The reader will not be bogged down in the arcane language of the lab or technical terminology. (When it is necessary to introduce terms which might be unfamiliar, Glover defines those terms in simple language using footnotes on the same page.) Instead, Glover employs entertaining analogies and a bit of humor to shake us out of our comfort zones and compel us to think clearly! While Glover is not a trained scientist, he does not lack understanding of the technical issues at hand. But his presentation of those issue to the untrained reader is clear, straightforward and to the point. The result is a book that is easy to read, informative, and enjoyable. I recommend it to all my readers who wish to have a clearer world-view when it comes to the sciences of origins and the Bible.

Glover's forte is analogy. His analogies open up delightful windows upon the truth. They yield up opportunities to look at things from completely new and fresh angles. This sometimes indirect approach catches us off guard, and gently dismantles our faulty preconceived notions without attacking them head-on. It is hard to be defensive and argumentative when we are smiling! Whether Glover is imagining a fleet of levitating snow machines or exposing the folly of a Christian insistence upon "theistic meteorology", even the resistant reader will be disarmed and forced to rethink his cherished assumptions.

Another strength of Glover's is his understanding of ancient Near-Eastern world-views, and how they impacted the writing of the Old Testament. Every believer who struggles with early Genesis and Inspiration should read this book. Glover, a committed Bible believer, makes a strong case that those who would defend the Scriptures must do so with an understanding of the world in which they were written. His approach brings clarity to many of the riddles of Biblical interpretation, especially as they relate to modern science.

Reading Beyond the Firmament was a pleasure for me. I shared most of Glover's views before I read his book, and he introduced little information with which I was not already familiar. Still, his unique and fresh approach captivated me and gave me an enjoyable experience.
