Greece is a heady experience, with the hot sun and whitewashed homes, the sea, the food and people, the ruins, culture, and history. No matter which guide books one takes and how well versed one is in Homer and Sophocles, who doesn't sail into Piraéus feeling woefully ill-prepared to appreciate the glories of Greece? The 24 finely crafted short stories by modern Greek writers (many appear in English for the first time), arranged geographically (by Athens, the Peloponnese, Crete, and so on), help weave together some understanding of ancient, literary, and modern Greece.
Book Description
Discover Greece — a country that has inspired centuries of travel — through its best modern writers. Against a superb landscape of islands, rocks, caves, villages, windmills, vineyards, cities, ports, beaches, and ruins, all bathed in the rich light of the Mediterranean, these twenty-four stories draw from the long oral and written evolution of the Greek literary tradition. Incorporating myths, the meditative tranquillity of the region, and a past full of struggle and civil war, these stories are arranged by geographical region for the traveler and provide an enriching odyssey through the Greek landscape and mind. Contributors include Elli Alexiou, Melpo Axioti, Odysseus Elytis, Michel Faïs, Eugenia Fakinou, Rhea Galanaki, Marios Hakkas, Dimitris Hatzis, Nikos Kazantzakis, Margarita Karapanou, Alexandra Papadopoulou, George Seferis, Vassilis Vassilikos, Ilias Venezis, Leonidas Zenakos, Yiorgos Chouliaras, Georgios Drosinis, Yorgos Ioannou, Christoforos Milionis, Kostas Ouranis, Thanassis Valtinos, Eva Vlami, and Manolis Xexakis.

review.......2000-11-02
This book is exactly what it says it is, a traveler's literary companion. It is filled with wonderfully written short stories which take place in various regions of Greece. I read this book as I was traveling in Greece and it enriched my visit there. The stories reveal a lot about the Greek people, their history, and their culture. The quality of the writing is excellent. The introduction to the book says it better than I could. "Good stories reveal as much, or more, about a locale as any map or guidebook...Books from Whereabouts Press are essential companions for the curious traveler, and for the person who appreciates how fine writing enhances one's experience in the world.
Hidden Literary Treasures.......1999-12-20
Artemis Leontis deserves a lot of credit for compiling these twenty-four short pieces of prose transaltion. Among them we find selections by Elytis, Seferis, and Kazantzakis, but also some stunningly attractive pieces by other less well-known names. The editor says in her introduction that collections of contemporary Greek prose in English translation are scarce. If that is true, it's a real pity, because most of these selections are gems of the short story form and those that are not fiction are laden with ideas and forms of expression that dazzle one with their originality, grasp of history, and understanding of life. Elli Alexiou takes us back to the unfortunate exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey and shows us people of both ethnicities who were neighbors and friends and loved and respected one another. They say good bye at the dock knowing they will never see each other again, and they promise to write. The narrator's mother promises to take good care of the grave in which the Turkish family has buried their little son. She writes every now and then to tell them how the flowers around the grave blossom each year in due season. When the Turkish cemetery is bulldozed to make way for an apartment complex, she doesn't have the heart to tell them so, and keeps on writing year after year that the grave is still beautiful. Eugenia Fakinou looks at the City of Athens and the first day in a big city school through the eyes of a little girl who has been transplanted from the Island of Symi. Supposing, correctly, that the reader can interpret the experience for himself, the writer limits herself to recording the child's impressions and perceptions. Beautifully done. Dimitris Hatzis tells us about a tanner in Yioannina who slowly and painfully comes to realize that he himself is not necessarily a failure, but that the times have changed along with technologies and viewpoints and he has no choice but to make necessary adjustments. In the offerings by the three well known writers mentioned above, there are quite a few quotable sentences that make the reader stop and consider why and in what sense they express deep truth. All these selections are beautiful. They explore various apects of modern Greek life, urban and rural, and they examine, poetically, what most readers will acknowledge to be universal human values. For future editions, the editor might consider changing the books's title. As it is now, it gives the impression of being a guide book, while in fact it is something much more important, namely, a literary treasure trove.

The Beer Man........2005-01-28
This is a very informative book from a very impressive beer connoisseur. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because he neglects Stone Brewing Company which in my opinion is one of the best Brewing Companies in the world. The main aspect of this book that is so great is that he gives reviews and descriptions of beers that a lot of people would be unfamiliar with. Such as beers from the Czech Republic. Also Michael Jackson gives critics on beers throughout the world. It is very impressive because he covers so many countries in this book. Another thing that is typical of Michael Jackson's book is his excellent descriptions of the types of beer and also the ingredients in beer. This is very educational, and if you want to know of some great beers this is a very informative guide.
If you can find a better beer guide, buy it!.......2005-01-08
I own and have read many prior versions of Michael's pocket guides. This 7th addition is his best ever. Authoritative, thorough, interesting, and humorous, Mr. Jackson's guide is without question the reference point for all serious beer tasters. I mean, the guy has tried more than 2000 beers! Try highlighting all the beers you have had that he lists, and I'll bet it's not even 10% of his tastings. I love to bring this book into a well-stocked liqour store and use it to help pick something out new for me and untested. My only complaint is that I am not aware of a new edition since the 7th came out in 2000. I also wish I had his job!
He Built the Store.......2003-11-01
Michael Jackson invented beer writing and is the acknowledged
"epicure of record," on things beery and the victuals that accompany them.
His ratings are most reliable and, better yet, they come from deep knowledge unfettered by brewers' marketing ploys or public trends.
indispensible.......2002-04-20
Another quality book from Jackson. A nice size, able to slip easily into a pocket or handbag. Details beers from around the globe in an easy to read format, rating them on an easy to understand scale. Surprising amount of information for such a small book. All you have to do is find the beer!!!
A Perfect Guide for the Traveler.......2002-02-26
This "Pocket" guide is a perfect companion (of course, there are better, human companions) for the traveling beer lover. There are concise comments and honest, useful rankings for just about any beer you will ever run across in your travels. As you'd expect, this pocket guide is easy to take with you (it's about twice as big as a wallet without all the cash and credit cards stuffed into it) and can serve as a helpful guide when trying to figure out what to order at some of the world's better drinking establishments. It's broken down by country and that's helpful as well. I once ordered all the five-star Belgian beers at a pub in Brugge and other than the trouble I got in when I returned to my hotel, this book was a perfect guide for making good decisions.
Book Description
This book, a guide and companion to the prehistoric archaeology of Greece, is designed for students, travelers, and all general readers interested in archaeology. Greece has perhaps the longest and richest archaeological record in Europe, and this book reviews what is known of Greece from the earliest inhabitants in the Stone Age to the end of the Bronze Age and the collapse of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.
The book describes the prehistoric cultures of Greece in chronological order, and illustrates with 98 detailed drawings each culture’s typical artifacts, architecture, burial customs, and art. Written in an informal and accessible style free of scientific jargon, the book can be used in the classroom or as a guide for the traveler, or read simply for pleasure by anyone with a curiosity about the earliest ages of this fascinating region.
Although intended for a wide audience, the book has a solid scientific foundation. The authors are professional archaeologists with more than 25 years of experience in the field and with a first-hand knowledge of the methods and results of contemporary research. There is no other book today that covers the same range of periods and subjects, making it essential reading for anyone interested in the early civilizations that shaped the Greek landscape, laid the foundations for Classical Greek civilization, and contributed in many ways to the formation of the modern Greek world.
The authors have been careful to address the many questions concerning prehistoric Greece that have been asked them by students and visitors to Greece through the years. The illustrations were created especially for this book, showing familiar artifacts and sites from a new perspective, and selecting others for illustration that rarely, if ever, appear in popular publications.
Book Description
11" wide by 34" long, the front shows all 30 of the Famous Men of Greece in their proper chronological position. The other columns of the chart relate what is going on in Biblical history, other nations, and Greek culture. The reverse side has a three-part overview of Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History prepared by Rob Shearer.
Book Description
When Brian de Jongh's two classic Companion Guides, Southern Greece and Mainland Greece, were first published they were greeted with acclaim and immediately established themselves as essential guides. They have now been combined into this single volume, covering the whole of the Greek mainland. This new edition has been thoroughly revised by John Gandon (Brian de Jongh's nephew) and Geoffrey Graham-Bell, taking into account both new archaeological discoveries and recent development. Brian de Jongh combined an expert knowledge of history, archaeology and mythology with a profound understanding of the Greek people and a feeling for the landscape which inspired their myths and monuments: he describes a country that he loved and much of which Pausanias, writing almost two thousand years ago, would still recognise. This book is, more than ever, the most indispensable of all modern guides to Greece.

Book Description
When Ernle Bradford's Companion Guide to the Greek Islands first appeared in 1963 it was immediately hailed as the best published guide to the diverse and endlessly fascinating islands of the Aegean and Ionian seas. This revised edition of this classic travel guide profits from FRANCIS PAGAN's twenty years' of travel in Greek waters, and deep knowledge of the area. He has added further touches to Bradford's vivid accounts of the moods of the sea and the islanders' traditional ways of life, leading the reader to unexpected discoveries (hidden monasteries, hill-top villages, flowery valleys, quiet places by the sea), and writes in more depth of the Classical, Byzantine and medieval past. Included in this edition are accounts of recent archaeological work in the islands by British, American, and other European schools; he also guides the reader to sites which have become more accessible as communications multiply by sea, air and land. Photographs by George Domatas.

Just an ordinary travel guide.......2005-07-17
Travel guides generally should not deserve a review.
They are a tool and, more than other books, are exposed to the damage of time.
This book (first published 1963) is no exception, but it got my attention because the author, Ernle Bradford, was also an excellent writer and a passionate lover of the Mediterranean Sea.
His "Mediterranean. Portrait of a Sea" is probably the best homage ever paid to the "Mare Nostrum": passionate, informed and attentive to the many colors of its shores. Also his "The Great Siege: Malta1565" reveals this same passion.
Unfortunately this book is just the average list of islands arranged in roughly geographical order and enlivened here and there with a colorful touch.
Nothing more - nothing less.
As a traveler, I have toured extensively in the Mediterranean and enjoy as well reading about its history and traditions.
If you are reading this review, there may be a chance you're looking at this book because of my same reasons and could be interested in similar travel-related books I had the chance to read (and enjoy) about this argument:
- Predrag Matvejevic - "Mediterranean. A Cultural Landscape". Nostalgia over the shores of the dark wine sea (if interested, I have written a review on it).
- Ernle Bradford - "Mediterranean. Portrait of a Sea". Possibly the best book I read on history, culture and traditions of the Mare Nostrum.
- John Ash - "A Byzantine Journey". A poetic, fragile and luminous evocation of the Byzantine past.
- Stephen Minta - "On a Voiceless Shore". A travel on the footsteps of lord Byron: passionate, poetic and hugely learned.
- James G. Frazer - "Pausanias and Other Greek Sketches" (1900). Yes, this is the author of the famous "Golden Bough". It is a collection on short sketches about archeological walks and visit on mainland Greece. Today everything is changed, but you still can catch some of the fascination described in this book.
- Patrick Leigh Fermor - "Mani. Travels in the Southern Peloponnese" (1958). Deservedly praised for his sensibility in describing a vanishing Greece, this is one of the most touching homage ever paid to Greece. The remoteness of the Mani region is nowadays gone, but still you can enjoy the unique landscape and imagine how it must be at the beginning of the XX century.
- Robert Byron - "The Station. Athos: treasures and Men" (1928) - by the same author of "The Road to Oxiana", it is a report of a trip to Mount Athos, written by a lover of Byzantine civilization. It cast a glance on some of the less known traits of modern Greek culture, the Byzantine heritage and the orthodox faith.
- Henry Miller - "The Colossus of Maroussi". Listed here only because I read it, this is a book I greatly disliked: at least this is not the Greece I know and like... read at your own risk.
- J.B.S. Morrit - "A Grand Tour. Letters and Journeys (1794-96)". Letters posted during the author's travels through the Aegean Sea. Very colourful and passionate, it is a testimony on how Greece was before the War of Independence.
I do appreciate feedback.
You are truly welcome if you can suggest other readings or just share ideas and comments!
Thanks for reading.

You're no dummy to salivate at the thought of Baked Chocolate Pillows, Fallen Chocolate Soufflé, or Mom's Apple Pie. Following the easy, breezy format of the Dummies series, pastry chef Bill Yosses, who spent a decade at the four-star Bouley Restaurant in New York City, takes you through these recipes and 130 more in Desserts for Dummies. The book is cowritten by Bryan Miller, once the restaurant critic for the New York Times. The 16 pages of color photographs in this book are alluring, but a few more illustrations in black and white would help, particularly accompanying the recipes for making puff pastry and strudel dough. You'll dive easily into recipes such as Toasted Coconut Frozen Soufflé and English Trifle, which is made from scratch starting with instructions for sponge cake. Yosses and Miller also offer information on ingredients and techniques to enlarge your repertoire and improve your skills. Dessert making is the most precise form of cooking, and Desserts for Dummies is appropriately less frantic and more direct than other volumes in the Dummies cooking series.

Sweetest Job in Washington
The White House has a new executive pastry chef,

Westport, Conn. (Dressing Room: A Homegrown
Restaurant) where the emphasis is on locally grown and
organic foods.
As the top pastry chef, Yosses will be responsible for

I overcame my fear of baking.......2003-02-25
The book made me feel confident and I took on more and more recipes. They all came out wonderful. My family is trying a lot of new dishes out of Dessert for Dummies, and they love them all.
Bravo!.......1999-09-21
The recipes are great, beautiful, wonderful, and most importantly-just about fool proof! Try the lemon poppy seed cake with the blueberry topping. It alone I think was worth the price of the book. The only time I messed a recipe up was when I was to impatient to wait for a pan of custard to cool. Stunning recipes for a novice cook.
Great book for those just starting!!!.......1999-06-01
I went to school(BICC in Baltimore)for baking and pastry and can only wish that I had had these guys as teachers. Very informative with easy to use directions. They explain every thing very thoroughly and I gotta tell you the pie dough recipe is excellent. I am no longer afraid to attempt pie making!!! If you are into desserts and want a good book with some great recipes go for this one to start your collection. You just can't go wrong.

Yoss
By Odo Hirsch
(...)
I have read a lot of books that take place in ancient times, have strange and magical plots, and they usually entertain me the whole time I'm reading them. Sadly Yoss is another story. With a plot that could use some work, and false descriptive statements that get you exited over nothing.
On the front of the book you'll notice the statement "An extravagant, haunting novel by Odo Hirsch". That statement is one the main factors to why I picked up that book. During the beginning of the book it was kind of boring, but we all know a good book does not give away the plot on the first page, so I decided to give it a chance.
Yoss is about a 14 year old boy who takes part in a ceremony at his village where he must leave the village for at least one day, and come back with something new he has learned that can help the village. During his little quest he decides to go where no villager has reportedly gone before. He runs into two "travelers" that befriend him in a way, and that is just about where Yoss' adventure begins.
I had to use quite a bit of my own imagination to picture the environment that the author tried to create. If it weren't for my imagination this book would have been very strange and boring.
I would give Odo Hirsch a second chance considering the fact that this is his first book that should have appealed to older kids, maybe he still has to get a feel for this style of writing.(...)
