5 out of 5 stars Frommer's is fantastic.......2005-10-24

My wife and I greatly enjoyed a week in Costa Rica earlier this month. We are not frequent travelers, and neither of us had previously visited a country where English is not the primary language. Frommer's certainly made our trip smoother and more enjoyable. We foud this guide to be accurate regarding both factual information and perspective. Without it, we would have missed some memorable sights and experiences, including side trips to see the beautiful churches in Zarcero and Las Canas. We rented a small SUV, and had very little trouble finding our way, thanks to Frommer's. Driving in San Jose was a bit of an adventure due to a nearly complete absence of street signs, but Frommer's amply warned us about this in advance. I appreciate Eliot Greenspan's sense of humor as well. We also brought the Lonely Planet guide with us, but I must give Frommer's the nod. I have just one difference of opinion with Mr. Greenspan. The Costa Rican cuisine can actually be quite good. We enjoyed some unique fish and poultry dishes at several hotels and resorts that I would put up against any in the states.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable practical aid.......2005-05-11

I just came back from Costa Rica, and I am still amazed at how useful the book was. Everything we planned and did on the basis of the advice from the book turned into a successful endeavor and great memories.

The book gives detailed information on which places to see, how to get there (covering all possible transporation means), hotels, good places to eat in the respective location, and local tour opperators to use. For all of these it gives prices, addresses, telephone numbers, business hours, best times to visit, etc - even recommends dishes to try in some of the restaurants. Also, the info is presented in a very organized manner and covers a wide range of budget levels. All the recommendations I used were very good and the information proved to be very accurate. I strongly recommend the book as an invaluable practical aid!

An only shortcoming of this book is that it lacks detailed information about Costa Rica, the culture, the history, etc, and does not describe in much detail the places. If you feel the need to know a lot about the places you visit, and have the time to read more, I recommend using this book along with one that is more descriptive of the places, history, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Good Way to Plan, but ASK the LOCALS! .......2005-05-04

Very good resource to plan your trip, but once in Costa Rica I did not think the book was completely accurate. The locals had very different opinions about places and activities. It would have been nice if the book had included information about alternate forms of transport such as boats from town to town or Interbus. Overall a great resource to get started and get a good idea of what you want to do and where you want to go. Ask the locals before you make reservations. Pura Vida

We used this guide to get us an hotel in Montezuma. We stayed at the Nature Lodge Los Fincas. It was a dump and we were forced to either stay or lose all of our money for the entire saty. We did what the couple before we checked in did. We paid them to leave. The rooms were covered with ants, triantulas, no constant running water....hot water, no way. The food was served with ants and bugs in it. I think this writer is either dillusional or just tells the hotels to get ready cause he is on his way. My advice, pick up another guide.

5 out of 5 stars This writer has never disappointed me yet.......2007-08-21

I was looking for older releases from Mr. Sheldon and picked up this book that I had somehow missed before. There's a reason why they call him the master of this genre. A superbly entertaining story from beginning to end. The action is fast-paced and held my full attention as if this story was written yesterday instead of 13 years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Some Things Last Forever.......2007-04-06

Great story of three women doctors in their residency at San Francisco's Embarcadero County Hospital - Paige Taylor, cardiac surgeon, Kate Hunter, African-American neurosurgeon and Honey Taft, wanna-be nurse, forced into being a doctor (internist) by her well-to-do family and not really good at it at all. Honey does find that if she uses her female charms on the elders of her profession, it becomes a sure-fire method to get through medical school and then unto residency! The story begins with Paige Taylor being tried for murder after answering a patient's request to be put out of his pain. It then flashes back five years to when the women first met and decided to become roommates. Sheldon takes us through the relationships of men vs. women doctors. One storyline involves Dr. Ken Mallory and his mucho attitude, betting thousands of dollars with his male peers that he could take on Dr. Kate Hunter. Enter Kate Hunter, brutally raped and abused at a young age and totally rejecting the opposite sex. Dr. Mallory sees Kate, a dedicated, hard-working doctor and loving sister, as the ultimate challenge. In my opinion, Sidney Sheldon has done it again. He totally captures the hard work and grueling hours residents must endure and the dedication that goes hand and hand with their profession. The book held my interest and lived up to the standards of this excellent author's reputation.

3 out of 5 stars Hospital drama.......2006-05-01

Three young women meet as internists in a large San Francisco hospital, and agree to share a flat.. Paige who is interested in cardiac surgery, Kat, a beautiful black woman who wants to specialize in neurosurgery, and Honey, a daughter of the South who really wanted to be a nurse, to fulfill her need to nurture. Honey is the youngest in a family of achievers who belittled her ambition to be a nurse, saying that members of their family always aimed for the top and that she had to be a doctor or nothing. Unequipped with the brains to really rise to the top, she learns to use sex to achieve her purposes and sleeps her way through high school, college and medical school. Kay has battled her way from the ghetto and is determined not to let the fact that she was raped as a young girl, with a resulting pregnancy and abortion, prevent her from achieving her goals. Paige had grown up in underdeveloped countries as the daughter of a World Health Organisation doctor who eventually gave his life in the cause of helping the underpriveleged. The hospital where they are all doing their residencies contains the usual quota of nerds, sleazes and go-getters and the story details lots of medical emergencies for those readers who love this sort of thing. It would probably make an admirable soapie or mini series featuring lots of beautiful people and is an ok read for when you're in the mood for an action book which is not at all brain taxing.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, from cover to cover!.......2006-02-26

I have never read Sidney Sheldon before, and I don't know if this book is typical of his writing style, but I can honestly say it was horrendous. When I finished reading the book, I came here out of curiosity to find out what others had to say about it. I couldn't believe the glowing reviews on this site!
Sheldon writes like an elementary school student. He attempts to develop his characters by say "Paige was a tough woman" instead of putting Paige into a situation and demonstrating her toughness. The reader is just supposed to accept his little facts about each character without any evidence.
The courtroom scenes are lame and overdramatic - people yelling "Objection!" every couple of paragraphs, and the judge engaging in unbelievable dialogue such as Judge: "Did you see a tent?" Lawyer: "I beg your pardon?" Judge: "You're not going to turn my courtroom into a circus!" Groan...
The situations in the hospital are equally ridiculous, with every patient, doctor, intern and orderly trying their darndest to get the three main characters (all female doctors, gasp!) into bed. It's so contrived, it hurts to read it.
The whole book is full of lame dialogue, and the earlier-print version that I read also contained several editing bloopers that made me believe that Sheldon's own editor didn't get through it. There was one part where two paragraphs were repeated word-for-word, one right after the other in an obvious editing error. How could that go unnoticed?
I picked up the books because of the rave reviews on the covers from the Associated Press, the New York Post, etc. I asked myself several times, "Did these people read the same book I am reading?" It just didn't seem possible.
It's true that the book is a quick read, which is fortunate, because when I finished it I was sorry to have lost the couple hours it took away from my life. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Female Doctors. A Fantasy?.......2005-12-29

Some things never change. For example, the society's perception that certain jobs are for men. Female mechanical engineers are a rarity and who remembers the last woman to run for president in the US. (OK. Commander-in-Chief is showing on your local ABC affiliates.)
In Nothing Lasts Forever, Sidney Sheldon returns to his familiar role - writing about beautiful women caught up in the violence of the world around them.
Paige Taylor, Kat Taylor and Honey Taft are incoming residents who meet on their first day at Embarcadero County Hospital. They move in together, endure the long hours, finally having their lives changed by the relationships they keep and the secrets they hide.
Sheldon packs an engrossing read around the lives of these three doctors. The writing is fluid, the plot simple, and the characters likable. Though the ending left something to be desired, this is nonetheless an engrossing read that mixes a murder investigation, hospital politics and sexual conquest.
There are several things to think about while reading this novel. One is what should male doctors do to make female counterparts feel less threatened? Just as interns make joke about cadavers to relieve tension, could males be doing same (or are most as horny as Sheldon shows them to be)?
Another is the role of euthanasia in society. After the Teri Schiavo debacle, would we want a lax approach to mercy killing or would we rather have our doctors maintain the moral injunction of the Hippocratic oath to refrain from giving "a deadly drug to anybody who asks for it."

While the heroines might lack the drive of Jennifer Parker in Rage of Angels or the innocence of Catherine Douglas in Memories of Midnight, Sheldon's work assures that though nothing lasts forever, some things, like a good novel, should.

5 out of 5 stars It's the source for "Die Hard", but you'll be surprised..........2005-01-04

A grim, more bleak version of what you might have been initially exposed to in the first "Die Hard" film, Roderick Thorp's "Nothing Lasts Forever" was a pleasure to read.

There are enough differences to keep movie-viewers off balance, and the writing is tough and terse, befitting it's hero, Joe Leland (not John McClane).

The plot similarities are as such: it opens on a plane from NYC to LAX. He's visiting an estranged family member in L.A., who works in a high rise and they're having a Christmas party when the building gets taken over by terrorists. There's a cop on the outside, there's the cop's "superior" who's not the most competent, the big bad guy is Anton (not Hans) Gruber...but...

...the tone is really quite different. It's a bit more introspective, withe Leland feeling himself consumed by hatred toward his enemies. When he takes out a terrorist, you get an impression of how it affects him. They're not casual. And as he "gets better" at it, it starts to change his thinking. It's pretty interesting stuff.

The media presence is handled much more seriously, not as a comic plot device/aside in the film. I thought it was much more realistic...the way media can manipulate the real story, and also how those people actually involved in the news story can manipulate the media right back. There's a few clever sequences that wouldn't have fit in the film, but are nevertheless pretty cool.

I'm withholding the numerous plot differences between the two, as I hope you'll discover them for yourselves, but as a teaser, the hero is going to visit his daughter, not his wife...

The film's screenplay, I think, is a masterpiece of action film writing. Good dialogue, nice exposition, decent plot twists. But the book is not that story; it's waaaay different. It has a different bent, and works equally well.

Thorp writes action well, so many scenes play out vividly in your imagination, without the help of the movie's imagery.

There are enough differences that I wasn't sure how the book was going to end, and you won't be sure either. Prepare for an unexpectedly pleasurable reading experience...

5 out of 5 stars A must read for "Die Hard"fans.......2003-06-04

The book "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorp is a must read for "Die Hard" fans. This book is about a cop named Joe Leland (in "Die Hard", John McLane)who goes to Los Angeles to visit his daughter Stephanie (in "Die Hard", his wife Holly) at the Klaxon Oil Building(in "Die Hard" the Nakatomi building)where Stephanie works. At the building, terrorists take over and Joe must go around the building killing the terrorists. This was the inspiration for the Bruce Willis movie "Die Hard"(1988). I'm a huge fan of the "Die Hard" movies, and if you are, too, buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Darker and grittier than the movie........2001-12-29

Die Hard (The Movie) fans may be intrested in reading this book, but beware, there are some major differences. One disappointing difference is the absence of Hans Gruber. The colorful mastermind from the movie is no where to be seen in this book. In fact there is no snappy banter to be found because the terrorists don't speak English. The realism factor is higher in this book too, not that Die Hard wasn't believable, but when you puke after realizing you've killed someone, you're talking real life. Other differences are abound in this book. You should read it to see them all. It's entertaining, and Thorpe is a talented writer, but this book is not quite as entertaining as the movie. Still, don't let that discourage you, I throughly believe that books hold more depth, detail and darkness than Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars One more time, books are better than movies.......2000-10-06

I'm a great fan of Die Hard movies, and I have tried to find the novel that based the first movie for years. After reading it, I have to say that Thorp made a great book. The main character Joe Leland (John McClane at the screen) is now more closer to a human. He doubts and suffer as anyone of us. And the book adds something very interesting for the reader. We see all the action since the perspective of Leland, so we can see how he feels about all the stuff. Obviously, a movie can do that. The script by Steven E. De Souza has selected some of the more important parts of the book, and be careful, not all the things on the screen are in this pages. Do a favour to yourself, buy this book. If you liked Die Hard, you'll enjoy this book a lot. If you don't like action movies it's a wonderful way to spenda few hours reading something different.

5 out of 5 stars Seen the movie? Read the book........2000-01-29

First of all, I should probably say that Die Hard is one of my favorite movies of all time. For me, reading the book it was based on was a no brainer, but I even recommend it to people who aren't fans of the movie. While retaining the same basic "terrorists seize building" plot of the film, the novel is actually very different. It involves a much older hero (Joe Leland) who is desperately trying to save his daughter and two grandchildren, rather than his wife. The whole thing is a little more realistic and plausible than the movie. For instance, Leland's daughter, Stephanie, is not your average, ethically flawless, damsel in distress. She is obviously not a perfect person. More than once, Joe finds himself thinking about all the mistakes she has made in her life. The book contains variations on all of the familiar stunts and supporting characters (minus the two arrogant FBI agents) that really helped to make the movie great. The action sequences are quite suspenseful, especially for a book. What really enhances the suspense is Leland's vulnerability. He doesn't kill without emotion, and he's definitely not physically invincible. In a few parts it really seems like he's done for. Nothing Lasts Forever is an overall great book that is extremely entertaining and hard to put down. My only major complaint is that since the entire story follows Leland's point of view, you only come into contact with the head antagonist (Gruber) when Joe does. As a result, the character of Gruber is not nearly as memorable as Alan Rickman's portrayal in Die Hard. To wrap up, if you liked Die Hard it would be a mistake not to pick up this book, and even if you weren't crazy about the film, Nothing Lasts Forever is different enough to warrant a strong recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Will Simmons Vs Ken Matthews.......2005-04-03

Will Simmons is gaga over winning the University of Mivhigan Scholarship, and takes Melissa and his Parents out to breakfast at Chez Lorraine,a block away from House of Java. Jeremy Aames decides to Quit House of Java, because of Jessica ana Jade. Ally Scott[The House of Java's owner's daughter] decides she wants Jessica to fire Jade, for slacking off,for calling in sick when she isn't, then comes in with Jeremy. Will Simmons gets hurt at a football game, and the doctors say he can never play again.

5 out of 5 stars Book #20 in SVH Senior Year Series.......2003-09-18

In "Nothing Is Forever," Will Simmons and Melissa Fox are still in seventh heaven over Will's scholarship at the University of Michigan, while Ken Matthews is just the opposite. He's jealous of Will's success, and completely crushed by his father's blatant disappointment in him. I never paid a lot of attention to Ken's storyline before, but I could really empathize with him in this book.

Next up, Jeremy Aames wants to quit at House of Java for obvious reasons--both his exes work there. But Jessica Wakefield is trying to get Jade Wu fired instead. Finally!

Andy Marsden reemerges from the shadows and outs himself to Conner McDermott, but without the reaction he thought he'd get. And Conner...well, nothing much has changed there. He's still stumbling around drunk, as usual.

This was a good SVHSY book, but it certainly wasn't exceptional. Nothing really new or dramatic happened, and the ending wasn't a big surprise either, considering the book title and foreshadowing on page 92. Still, worth a "5" for the writing.

    5 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2002-01-07

I rate all SVSY books 5 stars becuz they're all really good even if there are some better than others. I cannot stand Conner in this book. He's angry with his mother for actually being there for him when that's what he's wanted all his life. I mean, he saw the effects of alcohol on her and hated it and now he's turning into an alcoholic. And why is he drinking anyways? He got back together with Liz and he even told her he loved her and she said the same to him. And now he's chewing her out when she tries to help him. He thinks the world sucks when it's just him. Also, Ken's dad is sooo mean. He literally told him he was a loser. But I was really happy for Ken when he got to play in the football game. And I was really glad when he leveled his dad with a cold stare when his dad was suddenly proud of him. I couldn't believe I actually felt sorry for Will and Melissa when he got injured, but I was. And Jess and Jeremy belong together. But I think she sorta did deserve the dissing he gave her when she took him to the beach to prove Jade was cheatin on him, but I guess that was in the last book. I'm glad Jess is firing Jade who, by the way, I've never liked. She's too sarcastic and, I mean, if she still actually thinks cheating on Jeremy was okay (which she does) then she has some serious problems. I was really glad Jeremy made up with Jess and I really don't want him to quit either. And why is everybody just throwing the whole Andy/gay issue aside. It's like he just told them and they were like "Good for you, now back to my problem". Okay, maybe not quite that rude, but still. Overall, this wasn't the best book but it was good.

4 out of 5 stars Good but dissapointed by the outcome.......2001-07-12

This book was really good but before i bought it i read the back and I thoght there was gonna be this whole breakup thing with Will and Melissa but there was nothing!! Actully something REALLY big happens to Will but no breakup. This wasnt one of my favorites in the series but you have to read it to know whats going on. I do believe that besides the whole Melissa Will thing everything is good. You should still get the book though. Conner and Liz are having problems again and Maria is trying to help Ken out with all his "dad" problems and Ken gets his big break!! I was exited for him!! Tia is the same but something big happens to Andy. I felt so bad for him!! Get this book but dont expect a lot from the Melissa and Will ending.

5 out of 5 stars This was one of the best........2001-06-24

I really liked this story very much. In the start they talk about Will and Melissa's perfect life and how will's life could have been Ken's life. Ken and his father keep fighting. I really think his father is the jerk of all jerks. Then there goes the triple "J" story line(Jade, Jermey, Jessica)which seems like it's never going to end. Jessica goes to the boss ad tells her that Jade is slacking off at work and now Jessica has to fire Jade. Jermey is is still confused with theses two women and working with them at HOJ is making it worse so he decieds to quit. Then there goes the Conner/Liz storyline. Conner thinks his does not have a problem when he does. he has no respect for his mother or his girlfriend. I really think Liz should dump Conner he's worth nothing. Then at the biggest football game of Will's life he get's a bad knee injury and might not be able to play football ever again but there's a good side, Ken plays a terrfic game and might be staring QB again. But Maria is worried that with ken being popular again she might lose him. Overall this book is the bomb.

          Book Description

"I hate it when people throw around the word 'genius,' so I'll just say that Tom Schiller is an 'asshole.' Any true fan of Saturday Night Live should read this book - it's genius." - Jimmy Fallon

Tom Schiller was among the first to join the Saturday Night Live team in 1975. Recognized more for his work than his name, Schiller spent a total of eleven years with the show, writing sketches and directing short films. He directed John Belushi at age 90 in the ironic grave-dancing short Don't Look Back in Anger; Phil Hartman and Jan Hooks lip-synced to Bing Crosby in the musical Love is a Dream; and Bill Murray played a homeless man who thinks he's a brilliant Shakespearean actor in Perchance to Dream. With his memorable short films, Schiller added an element of heart and style to Saturday Night Live.

Many took notice to Schiller's unique filmmaking vision including producer Lorne Michaels and MGM, who signed Schiller to write and direct his first feature film. Nothing Lasts Forever, a clever science fiction comedy with strong aspects of social satire, starred Zach Galligan and Bill Murray. But with MGM facing financial uncertainty, Schiller's forgotten masterpiece was never released. Despite its critical acclaim, and having being invited to the Cannes film festival two years in a row, the film has been doomed to the vaults for over twenty years.

Nothing Lost Forever takes a thorough look into the films and career of Tom Schiller, through his own eyes and through those who have worked closely with him.

"Every SNL performer trusted Schiller. We were all as in love with his visions as he was." - Dan Aykroyd.

          Featuring:
          -Foreword by Tom Davis
-Extensive new interviews with Tom Schiller, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Zach Galligan, Lorne Michaels, Bill Murray, Mike Myers and many others.
-Rare, never-before-seen photos - over 100 in total
          ...and much, much more!

"This book captures Tom's giddy, enchanting creative spirit. Watching Schiller play 78s on the gramophone in his office, a 1940s version of Pee-wee's Playhouse, is one of my favorite memories of SNL. You'd visit for the quaint escape and come out remembering why you love to create comedy." - Robert Smigel

          5 out of 5 stars Amazing Filmaker.......2005-11-02

Tom Schiller has an amazing filmic vision. It was great to read all the details of the making of this overlooked classic film.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Early SNL fans like me.......2005-06-30

I'm an older SNL fan and I do remember seeing several of Schiller's films on SNL. What I enjoyed most about the book is the details provided for every step of Schiller's cinema portfolio. I never realized how involved the filmmaking process was for a short clip. The writing is easy-going and quite engaging. The photos are precious, and I would have preferred to see them on glossy paper as opposed to on regular paper. Any one who loves films and is considering film as a career should pick up the book. The book really provides a bird's eye view of what the industry is really like: the good and the bad. Makes me appreciate Schiller's work even more.

          5 out of 5 stars A Winner.......2005-06-17

"Nothing Lasts FOrever" gives SNL fans like me an inside account of how the show was put together in the early years. It's sort of a book within a book. The detailed accounts of Shillers short films, combined with a summary biography of Schiller, provide the background for the intriguing inside story of a feature length film, "Nothing Lasts Forever", written and directed by TOm Schiller in 1982. MGM commisssioned the making of the film but decided not to release it. The six chapters dealing with that film leave the reader interested in seeing it. And the choice of the title of Michael Streeter's book makes it clear that at least one of his motivations for writing this very well researched book is his hope that "Nothing Lasts Forever" will not be lost forever.

          1 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Read.......2000-05-23

I ordered Desiring Italy to read while my husband and I travelled in Italy this year. I had hoped that it would be as interesting as The Italians by Luigi Barzini or Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the book; it did not meet my expectations or hold my interest so I abandoned it in our hotel room.
