Book Description
"Despite the plethora of piscine literature," say the authors of Fishing the Delaware Valley, "we have tried to create a book unlike anything else on the market. With our approach that fishing is a major entertainment endeavor and that it is a family activity that can be pursued within fascinating historical and culinary settings, we have tried to demonstrate that, most important, fishing is serious fun."
The Delaware River is the last major free-flowing river in the eastern United States. Drawing on their cumulative century of angling experience, the authors range through the 14,000 square miles of the Delaware River watershed, with offshore visits for saltwater fishing along the New Jersey coast. All the places they talk about are within three-and-a-half hours of Philadelphia by car.
Besides giving directions to their favorite spots, the authors regale the reader with comments about what to expect of each place and how to make the most of your visit. Along the way they mention and frequently evaluate nearby tackle shops, restaurants, taverns, historical and scenic attractions, and even shopping opportunities.
Throughout, they share their own experiences with the readerboth the pride of spectacular catches and the embarrassment of spectacular follies. One of the authors admits to breaking a new rod in a restroom door. Another tells about having to be rescued from a mid-river rock by the very anglers to whom he had just bragged about his accomplishments. They spice their descriptions with apt quotations and finish it off, like a truly successful fishing day, with their favorite recipes.
This is a book with something for everyone, from the novice to the expert. Even non-fishing friends and family members will welcome the authors' suggestions for things to do while waiting for their loved one to land the perfect trout or will be entertained by the stories about those incomprehensible people who flock year-round to the Delaware Valley's lakes, ponds, streams, and coastal waters.

A Must for Fishing Delaware Valley.......2000-10-31
This is one of the best location guides for fishing I have ever read. They list the Tackle shop and resturants for the fisherman, plus things for the rest of the family to do, to make a fishers trip a family vacation. If you are going to fish the Delaware valley this book is a must.

Customer Reviews:
Start with chapter one!.......2006-02-28
This book is pretty much as the Booklist review describes. It is worth noting that the book begins with lengthy forwards and prefaces which I found wordy, ponderous, and a bit moralistic. I began to fear the book would be the same. Not so! when you finally get to chapter one, the pace picks up and the tone and diction become lighter and much friendlier to a high-school level of reader. Far from being moralistic, the author deals with a variety of real issues that young people have to face, and does it in a frank, sensible, easygoing and very constructive fashion. The book should be a help and a comfort to many in its target audience.
Great, great book!.......2005-01-15
I have been learning about Buddhism for a couple of years now and bought this book for my teenage daughter, in hopes that it would inspire her to join me. She hasn't read it yet, but I decided to pick it up off her shelf one day and read it myself. This book changed my life. It is written in very simple, easy to understand terms. I felt like Diana Winston was a good friend, walking the path with me and explaining things along the way. I loved it. And I am still hoping my daughter will join me!
This book worked miracles for our 15 years old teenager.......2004-05-28
Our son was in very hard times, struggling to come to terms with the low values (if values) of modern society, modern music and his own background and values. With 14 he went into extrem aggression and anger. He sought refuge in hard rap, which on one side helped to work anger off, but fueled it from another side.
Since he started to read (and practice) this book, he changed tremendously.
I highly recommend this book to any teenager (or parents who wish to find help) with the wish for help.
10 stars!
wake up sleepyhead!.......2003-09-29
This is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism. I have been sitting for several years and I am closer to middle-aged than teen-aged, but this book has a concise yet scholarly nature that presents Buddhist practice beautifully.
I want to buy this book for everyone I know, from my 13 year old god-daughter to my 93 year old grandfather. Diana Winston illuminates the beauty and difficulty of living honestly in the world. If I were to change one thing, I would make the subtitle read; "a Buddhist guide for teens and those who were once teens"
Thanks Diana!
Fantastic Book!.......2003-08-23
I was so excited to read a book that really speaks to me. I am a teen who is interested in spirituality and when I found this book I felt like I could learn so much about Buddhism and how it really applies to my life. I learned about meditation and am trying it in my home, and I see ways I can be less judgemental and live with higher integrity.

Book Description
In the not-too-impossible-to-imagine future, a gay Jewish man has been elected president of the United States. Until the governor of one state decides that some election results in his state are invalid, awarding crucial votes to the other candidate, and his fellow party member. Thus is the inspiration for couple Jimmy and Duncan to lend their support to their candidate by deciding to take part in the rallies and protests. Along the way comes an exploration of their relationship, their politics, and their country, and sometimes, as they learn, it's more about the journey than it is about reaching the destination.
Only David Levithan could so masterfully and creatively weave together a plot that's both parts political action and reaction, as well as a touching and insightfully-drawn teen love story.
Customer Reviews:
How It SHOULD be..........2007-06-27
I love what Levithan has done, imagining the success of the true moral majority, the liberal, inclusive world that we are just a hair's breath away from.
Great, but not Levithan's Best.......2007-01-01
I read Boy Meets Boy when I was in 8th grade, and I've been an avid Levithan reader ever since. His writing is beautiful, his ideas spectacular, and there is always a beautiful romance or two.
So when I saw Wide Awake in stores, I immediately picked it up. As usual, Levithan's writing was great. His dialogue seems natural and after I got over the original recoil from seeing many idealistically diverse couples (Afro-Chinese lesbians, etc.) I got to enjoy it. I absolutely LOVED Levithan's idea of the Jesus Revolution, when Christians realize that really, Jesus would have loved everybody regardless of orientation, race, etc. I always had a disdain for Christianity because I saw it as not accepting enough, but this book restored my faith, so to speak, in the potential of the religion. The story was great, but I just can't say with a good conscience that there was nothing wrong.
The world Levithan creates seems too idealistic and perfect. The main characters are strong, happy, in love, virtuous, and able to make a difference when they set their mind to it. The "bad" guys are absolute charicatures of evil. They are violent, turn to trickery and fraud first, and are completely unaccepting. I found it hard to believe these black-and-white stereotypes.
Overall, I cannot complain at all about the writing. All the way through the book, I was hanging on every page. Levithan's writing is spectacular, as usual, and I loved Duncan and Jimmy's romance. However, looking back, the characters were too black-and-white. A great read and most people probably won't have the same problem I did. Generally, a great read, but not Levithan's best.
For the politically-oriented teen.......2006-12-02
David Levithan's newest novel, "Wide Awake," is a political novel set "in the near future." Here's the set up:
"The Greater Depression happened. The events of 3/12 and 7/23 happened. The Andreas Quake and Hurricane Wanda. The President launched his War to End All Wars, which only managed to create more wars and the tragic events of 4/5. The Greater Depression deepened. Millions of people died, and there was no way to erase their faces from the more renegade open news channels, which wanted to remind everyone how bad the government had let things get. The Decents and their program of Denial Education reached their peak."
The hero and narrator of "Wide Awake" is a Jewish, gay teen named Duncan who is engaged politically for the first time in his life. After all the troubles of his childhood and the generation(s) before, it seems as if a new era is on the horizon. His presidential candidate, Abraham Stein, a Jewish gay man with a partner and children, has been elected. People are behaving differently, celebrating their ethnic, cultural, and sexual differences. And supporting them all is a sizable group of Jesus Freaks.
"For the Jesus Revolutionaries, the answer was clear: Jesus would not be out waging "preventative" wars. Jesus would not be withholding medicine from people who could not afford it. Jesus would not cast stone at people of races, sexual orientations, or genders other than his own. Jesus would not condone the failing, viperous, scandal-plagued hierarchy of some churches. Jesus would welcome everyone to his table. He would love them, and he would find peace."
Sounds like a utopian novel so far, right? But there's a hitch. A hitch in the form of Kansas. Stein's election is being contested. To the tune of 1,000 votes. (Sound familiar?) Stein calls all his supporters to Kansas and Duncan and his friends head to Topeka to support their candidate.
While "Wide Awake" is a political novel, Levithan does not abandon the everyday. Duncan struggles in his relationship with gorgeous Jimmy, teachers can be kind or belligerent, parents are sometimes more conservative than you'd like, and friends take sides in everyday breakups. But, in the end, Levithan's message is one of hope. People can be good and good people can change even the worst-case scenario into a better present and future.
"Wide Awake" is for older teens, ages 15 and up.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-11-05
Decades from today, the results of the election are out, and for the first time in the history of the United States, a gay, Jewish president, Abraham Stein, has been elected. After the Greater Depression, the War to End All Wars, the Reign of Fear, and the Jesus Revolution, the moment has arrived. Seventeen-year-old Duncan, who has spent the last few months working with his boyfriend, Jimmy, as a volunteer at the campaign headquarters, can finally stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance because at last the words "with liberty and justice for all" make sense.
But soon everything will take a 180-degree turn. The governor of Kansas, a member of the opposition party, demands a recount. Stein is determined to fight back, and asks all the people who have elected him to go to Kansas and show their support. Everyone at the election headquarters decides to board their bus that night and join this pilgrimage to Kansas.
Duncan, always insecure, always wondering about what Jimmy will think and what will happen to their relationship, knows that going to Kansas is the right thing to do. It's the once in a lifetime opportunity to help write history, and he decides to board the bus despite his parents' disapproval.
However, the trip proves to be more challenging than he thought. Duncan and Jimmy's relationship seems strained. Their friend Keisha finds out that her girlfriend, Mira, was having an affair with another girl in the group. And when the group arrives in Topeka, Kansas, they have to endure the insults and vicious attacks of the Decents (the supporters of the opposition party). They camp out in the center of town, along with more than half a million other people, with not much food, only a few accommodations, and no quick resolution in sight. Will it be worth it? Will justice prevail?
When I pick up a book by David Levithan, certain things are a given. First, I know it's going to be well written. From a little poem, to a presidential speech, to a sex scene, Levithan proves once again with WIDE AWAKE that he's a talented writer and has a great deal of imagination. This entertaining novel, full of interesting characters, is a combination of a fun parody of good versus evil, and a love story.

Wide Awake.......2006-09-13
A gay, Jewish president has just been elected to the office of President of the United States. Duncan and his boyfriend are thrilled that the candidate they supported has won, but their relationship becomes strained when the election results are called into question and their fellow citizens start taking sides.
This novel starts out with a promising original premise, but begins to lose momentum after the first few chapters. The main characters are never fully developed, and a couple of subplots involving love triangles detract from the main storyline. The dialogue between the teenagers in this book feels unnatural and the political speeches sprinkled throughout feel didactic and fake. The gift David Levithan has for imagining alternate realities and futures worked well in Boy Meets Boy, but does not succeed in Wide Awake.

Bruce P Benyo.......2001-01-26
Most people who wrestle with getting to sleep on a regular basis are totally unaware that they are not really "insomniacs" at all! They just need to "adjust their internal clock." In Wide Awake at 3am, Dr Coleman brings real scientific research to bear on the twin problems of insomnia and sleep-deprivation. Bottom line... The book is extremely informative and entertaining. But the most thrilling part is this: 1)The descriptions of the problems caused by insomnia are exact, 2) the diagnoses put forth by Dr. Coleman make sense, and 3) the treatments proposed in the book really work! I would suggest this book to anyone who has problems with sleep or fatigue, even on an irregular basis.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent low-hype instruction in self-hypnosis!.......2002-01-07
Straus' book is one of the few reasonable, low-hype self-help books out there. It is a thorough, clear and exciting book, with exercises that are illuminating and easy to do. There is a lot of excellent material on what hypnosis is and how to best use it to accomplish one's goals. This book, and its companion book, Creative Self-Hypnosis, bear little similarity to the lurid, sensationalistic, and shoddy popular books out there on self-hypnosis and mental training...this is the real deal, by a practicing clinical sociologist and hypnotherapist. A very very good and useful book.

Book Description
There are rare and innovative stories that seem to stir the hearts and souls of their readers, captivating them with a feeling that's unutterable, yet so motivational that they don't want to let it go. When an author has the ability to fashion such a feeling, he is truly Wide Awake. Clayton Malachi Lynch has accomplished just that through his encouraging, touching, and emotional yarn. In this inspirational narrative, one man finds himself looking back into the past in order to answer life's most important questions. What does it mean to truly be wide awake? What is our purpose in this world, and will our lives mean anything once we have faded away? Throughout his journey, he takes us with him to the days of his youth, where he discovers the answers he searched so hard for. As he slowly begins to find those answers, his eyes are opened in a way he never dreamed of while reminiscing about a child he knew long ago, a child with whom he had a lot more in common than he ever anticipated
Customer Reviews:
A very informative book, will change your world view........1998-04-16
It has been a few years since I read this book. I remember the cover notes saying that I would never look at the world in the same way again and I must say that it fundamentally changed my world view. It is a very intelligent book that is wide ranging in scope but uses time as a central theme. The author convinces us that nothing exists alone and that there are clocks and cycles everywhere. I recommend to any science reader.
Fascinating!.......1997-08-28
A fascinating, and largely undiscovered masterpiece purportedly addressing the Nature of Time. If you've read Grammatical Man, don't let that turn you off. This one reads like a different author
Book Description
Wide Awake in the Pelican Statewhich mimics the title of Dinty W. Moore's contribution to the collectionbrings together twenty-one of the finest modern writers who claim Louisiana as home, having lived all or some part of their lives in the Pelican State. Each author shares the knack of telling a good story, a Louisiana tradition that dates back two hundred years to the tales told by African American griots and the stories swapped among Mississippi river workers on boats, in taverns, and around campfires.
Though united by talent and place, these writers speak with inflections that vary by gender, race, education, religion, and time spent elsewhere. Their stories are also richly diverse, ranging from Ernest Gaines's humorous portrait of black culture in rural Louisiana to Tim Parrish's aching depiction of white working-class family life in Baton Rouge, from Ellen Gilchrist's acerbically funny rendering of wealthy New Orleans bankers to Richard Ford's flinty unfolding of a father-son relationship in the marshy netherworld south of the Crescent City. The pieces span the full swath of Louisiana experience, be it the life of a Vietnamese refugee in Lake Charles or the miraculous appearance of the image of Jesus on a refrigerator in Holly Springs.
In addition to their Louisiana-rooted inspiration and highest regard for craft, the stories in Wide Awake in the Pelican State share a deep humanity. These are stories about peoplenoble and nefarious, some living high and others down on their luckas they fathom the tragic depths and comic heights of love, betrayal, family, change, and life writ large.
Contributors to Wide Awake in the Pelican State: John Biguenet, James Lee Burke, Robert Olen Butler, Kelly Cherry, Moira Crone, Albert Belisle Davis, Charles deGravelles, John Dufresne, Richard Ford, Ernest J. Gaines, Louis Gallo, Tim Gautreaux, Norman German, Ellen Gilchrist, Joan Arbour Grant, Shirley Ann Grau, Dinty W. Moore, Tim Parrish, Tom Piazza, Nancy Richard, James Wilcox.
AUTHOR BIO: Ann Brewster Dobie is the editor of Something in Common: Contemporary Louisiana Stories and Uncommonplace: An Anthology of Contemporary Louisiana Poets. For thirteen years she served as director of the National Writing Project of Acadiana and now coordinates the Louisiana Writing Project. She is a professor emerita of English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Customer Reviews:
nothing better!.......2007-02-07
Not only should everyone in Louisiana read this book, but everyone in the country should!
Strange title; inscrutable cover; GREAT STORIES.......2006-05-18
This is an anthology with a strange title, inscrutable cover, and some of the best stories I've read. Some oldies but goodies (i.e., "The Convict") and many new-to-me stories. Some are surprisingly dark, but of course Louisiana is the land of mojo, Spanish-moss draped trees along black bayous . . . Well worth the read. These are stories to be read and read over again.
