The Monuments Past and Present series explores the ancient regions of Rome, Greece, and Pompeii with an eye toward contrasting what they were with what they are today. Important monuments and districts are presented with overlays that clearly depict how these notable ancient sites look today and how
they may have appeared when first built. These titles are excellent resources for travelers, students, and anyone else interested in the fascinating histories of these ancient regions.
Beginning with the Colosseum, the symbol of "The Eternal City," this volume explores twenty-four significant ancient landmarks such as the Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, the Pantheon, and the Appain Way.

Rome than and now.......2007-04-09
Great book
love to see rome then and now
makes history come alive
Time machine.......2007-03-25
This book uses overlays to show what Ancient Rome looked like when everything was new and in good shape. Then, you can flip the overlay and see how things look now. I always wondered how things looked then and wished I had a time machine to go back to those days. This book is the second-best thing to a time machine. The artists have done a great job of reconstructing the famous buildings, forums and temples. The book is well worth the money and is less expensive from Amazon than buying it in Rome.
Good Book.......2006-11-10
This is a great book but way too expensive. I could have bought the exact book in Rome for less than half the price from a vendor at the Colosseum but decided to wait until I got home.
You Won't Regret.......2004-01-22
You definitely won't regret buying this book. It has interesting historical information as well as pictures on what is Rome all about. It helps a lot to see what the places looked like when they was first built, and what is left of them today. I think the price for this book is a little steep. I mean considering that when I was in Rome in September 2003 it was sold right by the calcium for 10 euros. So you be the judge. But over all, from most of the books that were sold around this one left the most impression.
best little book on rome.......2001-03-31
I purchased a pocket size copy of this book in Rome on holiday It was great help to understand what we were looking at and we could see how it did look in the past. When we got home it was great helping us understanding and labeling our own pictures. I even included past pictures next to the ones I had taken to complete my own album. It is great when watching our videos and people ask what different buildings are.

Book Description
This new book in the popular Past and Present series explores historic sites in Christian Rome. Important monuments and districts are illustrated as they appear today, while overlays indicate how these sites probably looked when first built, making this book an excellent resources for
travelers, students, and anyone interested in the fascinating history of this region. The volume begins with a comprehensive tour of the Roman subterranean city known as the catacombs, and includes several labyrinthine burial grounds and underground places of worship. The second portion of the book
focuses on churches and basilicas, and includes a detailed look at the architecture and art objects of Saint Peter's, among others. A glossary provides definitions of terms commonly encountered when touring ancient Roman buildings.

An amazing visual and informational journey.......2004-01-17
Very highly recommended for students of Christian History and Roman Catholic Architecture, Christian Rome: Early Christian Rome Catacombs And Basilicas by Philippe Pergola is an informed and informative survey of archaeology and history of Christian Rome, featuring a profusion of full-color illustrations with translucent overlays that give the reader an accurate impression of what the often dilapidated relics once looked like. An astounding and superbly presented tour of both antiquarian architecture and culture, Christian Rome is an amazing visual and informational journey presented in a spiral bound format and part of the outstanding Getty Trust Publications' "Past & Present" series.
Book Description
A look at this fabled city--buried beneath a rain of ash and cinder during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD--includes the Porta Marina, one of the best preserved gates to the city, as well as the Forum, tmple of Apollo, and several public walkways and private villas.
Customer Reviews:
Pompeii Book is Enlightening.......2007-02-22
I visited Pompeii in 2006 and it was an amazing experience. At the time, I was reluctant to buy any of the books they had on-site and add extra weight to my travel bags, but was hoping to find this particular book when I got home--and was very happy to find it. Seeing Pompeii restored thru the "magic" of the overlay illustrations really brings the history of this wonderful old city to life. No matter how good your guide might be in Pompeii, it is hard to imagine the splendor of the city when faced with the incomplete excavated remains. I would highly recommend it to anyone before or after seeing Pompeii in real life. It would also make a great addition to the classroom in teaching about the ancient Mediterranean peoples.
A great book.........2000-03-28
I just returned from Pompeii last night and purchased this book. It has very useful information about the city, along with pictures of what each exhibit looks like now. Over each picture is a transparent sheet which shows what it looked like then. It was very, very interesting to see the difference between the present and what it was like before Mt. Vesuvius covered the ancient city. This book is very interesting for anyone seeking to learn about the city in a fun way. Also, it is similar and equally as interesting as Ancient Rome: Monuments past and present.

The coolest flip-book on ancient Rome.......2003-05-18
When I was in Rome I kept looking for something like this book.
Most of the ones I found in english were really disappointing.
The good ones were all too big, way too expensive, and often in Italian. Finaly a good one at a reasonable price, and available here!

Book Description
As the Roman empire declined and 'fell', contemporary glorification of the emperor's triumphal rulership reached new heights, strewing traces of the empire's perennial victory across the physical and mental landscape of late antiquity. In this, the first comprehensive study of how a great imperial ceremony actually developed and how it influenced both the eastern and western heirs to the Roman legacy, the Roman triumph's resurgence and afterlife is documented from the Tetrarchy down to the end of the Macedonian dynasty in Byzantium and down to Charlemagne's successors in the early medieval West. This perspective shows that celebrations of the ruler's victory experienced unceasing change in ritual form and content and that these changes mirrored broader trends in the development of society and the monarchy. At the same time, it casts new light on the late Roman origins of the trappings of early medieval kingship. Far from the imperial capital, the cult of triumphal rulership permeated local elites, as commanders in the provinces imitated the supreme victor by staging triumphs of their own, and the new Germanic kings followed suit. Classicists, medievalists, Byzantinists, specialists of art and ritual will find here new data and approaches to a central problem in the transformation of the Roman empire which culminated in the new civilization of Byzantium and the Germanic Kingdoms.

PREFACE:
Every visitor to an archaeological site knows the fifficulty, often indeed the impossibility, of imagining what it was like before its buildings were destroyed. The ruins are dead things; they speak their own language, which is romantic enough, but does not evoke a picture of the monuments in their original life and splendour. This is a guide that will help him to see not only what a monumentis, but, at the same time, what it was.

Just [savy].......2003-07-26
Jessica has found him the perfect guy. Nick fox is As savy as you can get (and i mean rell savy). Things start to heat up as Nick and Jess started getting to know each other a little bit more! But Jessica knows Nick Has secrets to hideand she wants to know every single one of them. (And she will trust me she will) but more interesting things start to happen as the book goes on......................................................
Really great book!.......2001-07-30
This book is really great. Some parts of it were predictable, others weren't. Jessica meets Nick Fox, who's cute and mysterious. She knows he has many secrets, and she wants to find out every last one of them! Elizabeth Wakefield is working on two projects- planning her boyfriend, Tom Watts's surprise birthday party, and helping George Conroy find his missing son. Could both projects be combined? It's pretty exciting, but a little predictable how that scenario turns out. Celine Boundreaux is back at SVU and wants to fit in. She tries to buy her way into the Thetas, and steal Jessica's boyfriend, Nick Fox. Tom Watts is really sad because of his family, but Elizabeth ahs two surprises for him. Jessica is trying to figure out Nick Fox's secret. It was really exciting, and very romantic. This book is great!
this is aweeeeeeesome.......2001-07-01
I couldn't put it down, i know what's up with nick fox and oh poor tom, he doesn't know his surprise yet though, and Nina why would she change I've read it at least three times, I need to read the next one, i need to know what happens. Read it!
one question:.......1998-02-10
How come the summer's events were never metioned in this book? Did they just forget that Liz cheated on Tom with Ryan? And that Jessica was going to visit Ben Mercer all the time? What about Nina Harper's guy, huh? I think that they should of metioned the summer to get in some controversery in this otherwise kinda dull book. (Busted's ten times more exicting.) It would be so cool if Ben Mercer just showed up at SVU to make trouble in Nick's and Jess's realtionship.

Chiang Kai-Shek's Secret Past.......2001-07-01
The book started slow but I really enjoyed it once I was further into it. His personality, both strengths and weaknesses, clearly came through. He rose to great power through single minded determination and ambition.
Even though her marriage ended in 1927 it would have been interesting to have a chapter at the end giving an overview of his life from 1927 until his death.
Good but dissappointing premature end........1999-03-30
This book had much to offer, but unfortunately, it ends when Ms Chen is sent to the United States. It completely ignores the rest of the Chiang Kai Shek 'rule' as president of the Republic of China. Chen Chieh Ju does give a clear insight into the personality of Chiang Kai Shek(prone to outbursts of violent temper, power hungry, ruthless, et c.) but seems to show a very soft heart for him. The Soong Sisters, however are another matter and are shown to be scheming and very power hungry(nothing not already known). I would recommend reading "The Soong Dynasty" either prior of subsequent to this work. Lots of questions are left unanswered. Was there more to the manuscript which has been lost or withheld from publication?
