Past the Tasting Rooms into the Gorgeous Hills!.......2006-08-02
When many people visit California to tour wineries, they head for Napa Valley on the weekend and sit in traffic jams for hours on route 29. Realizing that everyone in the slowly moving train may not be totally sober, the visitors think about how much they would like to be someplace else. A little known fact is that there are back roads into virtually every wine region in California that offer stunning vistas, gorgeous greenery and constantly changing scenes around every curve.
Backroads of the California Wine Country is a great resource for those inexperienced visitors. Otherwise, these well-meaning travelers will miss the best of what the wine country has to offer: Scintillating scenery!
The photographs do a great job of picking up on the amazing sights. Here are a few of my favorites:
p. 6 -- The moon rises over vineyards in Napa County's Carneros region
p. 11 -- A dramatic sunset over Napa Valley wine country
p. 13 -- Cirrus clouds float above the hills of the Redwood Valley of Mendocino County
pp. 18-19 -- The early morning sky glows orange in the hills above Ukiah
p. 22 -- Orr Springs Road twists and turns through some of the most pristine and dramatic landscapes in wine country
p. 30 -- This lovely tree-lined drive leads to Fetzer Vineyards, a wholly organic winery and the sixth-largest premium wine producer in the country
p. 31 -- The warm valleys around Hopland offer an ideal climate for growing grapes as well as apples and pears
p. 34 -- Mount Konocti, illuminated by the setting sun, looms large above this Lake County vineyard
p. 35 -- Peaceful at sunrise, Clear Lake State Park
p. 35 -- The vibrant flower gardens of Tulip Hill Winery
p. 38 -- A distant moon sets beyond a winter vineyard in the Valley of the Moon
pp. 42-43 -- Vineyards stretch across the Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County
p. 47 -- Downtown Geyserville is lined with charming buildings
p. 83 -- A rainbow forms
p. 90 -- Hot air ballooning
p. 94 -- Winery at Groth Vineyards
p. 99 -- Grape vines and mustard plants
Nice work, Mr. Crabbe!
The text is equally inspired with a nice mix of California history, wine background, local features, and suggestions for activities you can enjoy. The text is also well endowed with maps to show you the directions of the backroads that you are being encouraged to pursue.
Here are some of the unexpected materials:
p. 24 -- Seabiscuit's home in Willits
p. 36 -- Organic farming methods
p. 45 -- Cyrus Alexander's founding of the Alexander Valley
p. 61 -- Jack London in the Sonoma Valley
p. 89 -- The soil of Rutherford
p. 108 -- Apple Hill, east of Placerville
p. 117 -- The Gold Rush
p. 125 -- Covered bridges
p. 133 -- Steinbeck's world

Excellent Value.......2006-07-01
I lived in the Bay Area for several years and to be honest, the Wine Country is not really my cup of tea. However, the images in this book by Gary Crabbe are amazing and makes me feel as if I were there and enjoying myself. It takes a truly dedicated photographer to make such a wonderful collection of images of Wine Country. Many photographers have published photos of the Wine Country but these are some of the best photos I've seen from there.
The text by Karen Misuraca is well-written as well. It's informative going over a touch of history without over doing it and takes you on a literary road trip through the heart of the Wine Country. The photos and text compliment each other well and the book has a fair amount of both. In 160 pages, it's packed with meat as it works both as a photo book and travel guide.
If you'd like a personally signed copy, Mr. Crabbe is selling them through his website as well.
Details wines, scenery and other attractions .......2006-06-23
There are other books on touring California's wine country, but BACKROADS OF THE CALIFORNIA WINE COUNTRY: YOUR GUIDE TO THE WINE COUNTRY'S MOST SCENIC BACKROAD ADVENTURES has journeys even residents may not know about. One-day excursions for weekend travelers and wine lovers chart some of the lesser-traveled routes of the wine region from central California through Santa Cruz and north to Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties. Gorgeous black and white and color photos pack a bright treatment which details wines, scenery and other attractions - all beyond the usual tourist routes.

Praise for Managing a Corporate Bond Portfolio
"Crabbe and Fabozzi's
Managing a Corporate Bond Portfolio is a refreshingly good book on the neglected topic in fixed income portfolio management. If you want to understand the latest thinking in corporate bonds, what drives prices and why, read this book. You will emerge with knowledge that will help you get an edge in the competitive investing arena."
—Tim Opler, Director, Financial Strategy Group, CSFB
"A practitioner's guide . . . a creative, comprehensive, and practical book that addresses the myriad of challenges facing managers of corporate bond portfolios. The chapter on liquidity, trading, and trading costs is a must read."
—Mary Rooney
Head of Credit Strategy, Merrill Lynch
"As a Senior Portfolio Manager responsible for managing billions of dollars invested in fixed income product during the mid-1990s, Lee Crabbe was the one Wall Street strategist that I would read every week to help me figure out where value was in the corporate bond market, and for insightful and easy-to-understand special reports that educated me and most investors on the risks and opportunities inherent in new structures and subordinated products. Fortunately for me and investors, Lee Crabbe and Frank Fabozzi have written this book, which compiles much of their previous work on corporate bond valuation, along with new features that are a must read, especially in light of the volatile times in the corporate bond market over the past few years. For portfolio managers, analysts, traders, and even strategists, if there is one book in your bookshelf that you should have on corporate bond portfolio management, it is this one."

Interesting and informative.......2007-09-23
Buster Crabbe: A Self Portrait by Karl Whitezel is supposed to be based on the original manuscript of Crabbe's autobiography that was rejected by publishers before his death. Subsequently Whitezel expanded on this manuscript using Buster's own notes and tape recordings after Crabbe's death when there was renewed interest in releasing Crabbe's autobiography. It is therefore written in the style of an autobiography.
I enjoyed reading the book and thought that it was an interesting and easy to read biography/autobiography. There is quite a large number of black and white photographs, although there does not seem to be many family style pictures of Buster actually relaxing with his family. The book concentrates heavily on Crabbe's swimming career and early film career and does weaken slightly towards the end as though there wasn't as much to talk about with the exception of his eldest daughters early death which obviously played on his mind. The book is not full of gossip on other stars and this may be why it was previously rejected. A must for fans but only at a reasonable price. No paperback biography is worth the astronomic prices some dealers seem to expect fans to pay.
A BOOK YOU'LL WANT TO KEEP. NICE PHOTOS & COVER.......1999-07-09
Thanks for the kind words in the review. My walks and travels with Buster, limited though they were, gave flavor to the Q and A sessions. Transcribed from tapes, notes, and interviews with people who were fortunate enough to share his life, helped round out the details that revealed the man. Admittedly I wrote from the position of an ardent fan, but the results were honest, and from the mouth of the man. Fanzines from around the country have praised the book, for which I'm grateful. Thanks for reading it.
Excellent reading and should not be overlooked.......1999-02-21
This book Buster Crabbe: A Self Portrait, is excellent reading and should not be overlooked by anyone with a nodding acqaintance or anyone with a lot of knowledge on this man Buster Crabbe. Buster was human, with ups and downs in his life like anyone else. It's always how you approach life that has it's results. Buster was able to overcome a lot of things that could have brought any of us down. He also had another wonderful element in his life...his family. His father Edward Clinton Simmons Crabbe supported his son in the fullest sense of the word when he got his son on a swimming team that would have eliminated this young man, Buster Crabbe, because the Hawaii AAU voted to send the swimmers for competition with Japan who had won their individual meets in the June interscholastic championships. Buster had failed to win in June even through he had won all the others. How could one swimming meet determine who should or should not compete? If Buster's father would not have taken the action he did, Buster would not have made it on this team and would have quit swimming. His father's support helped him to be the Olympic swimmer he was. It sure was made clear how parents should support their children in their interests and talents. Who can determine what a child will stay with or quit doing and it can make a difference in their outlook on themself and effects their future? Parents need to support and guide their children in what they like to do. This book is a must to read. It tells that dreams really do come true. Buster watched as a young lad the members of the Hawaiian swimming team boarding the boat to go to the USA to compete in the nationals to determine who was going to the Olympics. Buster was determined at that point the next time an Olympic team left Hawaii for America he was going to be one of the men walking up the gangplank. Of course, that dream did come true in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics when Clarence Linden "Buster" Crabbe was the only USA man to win in swimming competition. He won the men's swimming 400 meter freestyle, giving him the gold medal. Anyone who loves swimming or swimming competition like I do will appreciate this book. Anyone who loves to read of people and how they grow and overcome diversity will love this book. Anyone who needs a hero, and Buster Crabbe was a hero to his family, friends, and those who just watch, will love this book. Buster can still be seen on video cassette swimming and acting as Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, in numerous westerns, Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion, etc. I am glad I bought this book and my congratulations to it's author Carl Whitezel.

A thrilling first novel in the tradition of The Alienist
Customer Reviews:
Detective Tale Tosses Reader Back to 1883.......2004-10-18
"Suspension," the debut novel of Richard Crabbe, tells two riveting parallel stories -- one of revenge, and the other a powerfully-addictive detective story. Both are set in the vividly described New York City, captivated by the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Crabbe takes the unusual step of opening his novel with a sensitive depiction of his main villain, Thaddeus Sangree, former officer in the Army of the Confederacy. Sangree is haunted by the death at Gettysburg of his beloved, idealized brother, Franklin (and based on how Franklin died, nobody could blame Sangree for carrying a grudge). This experience has instilled in Sangree a conviction that the Civil War hasn't really ended, and he must get revenge against the man he holds responsible for Franklin's death - Union Colonel Washington Roebling.
Roebling just happens to be the chief engineer and driving force behind the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, having taken over for his father after his death at the Bridge. Crabbe masterfully captures how important the Brooklyn Bridge was as a symbol in 1883 -- a statement of the power of Industrial America (i.e., the Northern version of success, not the Southern), and a gesture of healing and bridging gaps to bring a nation together. Roebling has invested so much of himself into the Bridge that he has been reduced to a shell of a man -- he spent so much time in the caissons (the underwater chambers where the foundations of the Bridge were built) that the "bends" -- which were unknown at the time -- prevent him from any strenuous work. Rather than just kill Roebling, Sangree and his band of saboteurs want to bring down the Bridge itself. What better revenge could former Confederates wreak on Roebling than to destroy his life's work?
Loose lips force Sangree and cohorts to kill bridge-worker Terrence Bucklin, and this brings NYC Detective Tom Braddock onto the scene. Braddock, a detective's detective (i.e., he'll crack your skull if that's what it takes to get your tale, but only as a last resort, and he'll sure feel bad about it), pursues Bucklin's murderers with a doggedness that is truly inspiring. While there is plenty of action in "Suspension," Crabbe shows the less-glamorous side of detective work, as well - perhaps as an author he relates to the adage that the detective's best asset is "an iron butt," due to all the book-work that has to be done.
As Braddock gets closer to his marks, Crabbe brings New York City to life -- particularly the tenements -- through vivid descriptions and clever attention to detail. Only an author steeped in New York City could offer such precise details as the varying odors emerging from various parts of the industrial city, and Crabbe also gives us a few street urchins for local color and humor.
I particularly enjoyed reading "Suspension" after reading David McCullough's magnificent history of the building of the Bridge -- one of America's great achievements. This gave me the background to appreciate the aspects of the building that Crabbe was necessarily only able to hint at or make peripheral to the story -- the rampant corruption, the key role played by Washington Roebling's wife Emily in the building of the Bridge, and most importantly, the sheer weight the Bridge possessed in New York City life during the time.
"Suspension" is one heck of a novel, and the fact that it is Crabbe's first is just plain amazing.
Well Done!.......2002-07-19
Excellent historical novel with strong characters and superb atmosphere. Beautifully crafted story telling and a wonderful sense of time and place. If you enjoy Caleb Carr, you will love this book. This author has written a memorable novel with realistic characters, suspense, and obvious research. Very highly recommended.
A chilling parallel between the 19th century & today..........2002-06-17
I picked this book up out of curiosity and never expected it to strike as close to home as it did. Mr. Crabbe is an author who obviously knows his subject - history - and has the ability to tell his story as well as Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum. I found his style to be a little heavy-going at times but I think that is because it reflected the literary style of the time period which was the setting for his story. The thrill of the chase, the escapes from peril, the deductive reasoning employed by the hero and much more made this an enjoyable reading experience. However, the parallel between this story set in Post-Civil War New York and current American and world events is chilling. The plot was conceived several years ago but it could very well have been taken from recent headlines describing the attempt by terrorists to destroy the most important American landmark of its day. A very important aspect of the book was the insight into the terrorists' plotting and motivation and their depiction as human beings with a cause. In the end you know why they did what the did and while you gain understanding of them you also know they have to be stopped because what they want is wrong.
hard to believe this is a first novel.......2002-03-08
"Suspension" is an intelligent, elegantly written historical thriller with interesting, fully realized characters (yes, even the madam-with-a-heart-of-gold seems fresh on these pages). The New York setting is wonderfully portrayed. Although the middle seemed to sag a bit under the weight of police department politics, I had trouble putting the book down once I reached the last half. Highly recommended!
Amazing First Novel.......2001-10-11
"Suspension" by Richard Crabbe is gripping story of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, life in NYC post-Civil War, and wartime passions that still smoldered and threatened to destroy the marvel as it was unveiled. The book provides a fascinating, human look at the diverse people who populated the emerging City at the time.
Richard Crabbe is deft with history, social perspective, emotional exchange, human frailty, terroristic motive, engineering and intrigue. He brings characters from another era to life in a thoroughly enjoyable journey from beginning to end.
