    Book Description

Over the past thirty-five years, Between Parent and Child has helped millions of parents around the world strengthen their relationships with their children. Written by renowned psychologist Dr. Haim Ginott, this revolutionary book offered a straightforward prescription for empathetic yet disciplined child rearing and introduced new communication techniques that would change the way parents spoke with, and listened to, their children. Dr. Ginott’s innovative approach to parenting has influenced an entire generation of experts in the field, and now his methods can work for you, too.

In this revised edition, Dr. Alice Ginott, clinical psychologist and wife of the late Haim Ginott, and family relationship specialist Dr. H. Wallace Goddard usher this bestselling classic into the new century while retaining the book’s positive message and Haim Ginott’s warm, accessible voice. Based on the theory that parenting is a skill that can be learned, this indispensable handbook will show you how to:
    • Discipline without threats, bribes, sarcasm, and punishment
    • Criticize without demeaning, praise without judging, and express anger without hurting
    • Acknowledge rather than argue with children’s feelings, perceptions, and opinions
    • Respond so that children will learn to trust and develop self-confidence

5 out of 5 stars "Aha" experience on every page.......2007-10-13

Full of real-world examples of communication with children, excellently structured and rich with insights, this book stands out for me from the crowd of parenting books. This is the book I come back to most often - re-reading the many passages I had previously underlined. I also recommend Einstein Never Used Flashcards by Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Magic Years by Selma H. Fraiberg.

5 out of 5 stars Who was Dr Spock???.......2007-09-18

I so agree with you. My childhood was not exactly a fairytail story. And I was scared that I wasn't going to be a good parent. But, I was going to change that! My husband and I brought 3 little boys into the big world in 3 years. They were going to be great, fantastic, successful human beings. Dr. Spock just wasn't cutting it in my world. What did he say again??? Then, I heard Dr Hiam Ginott on tv and knew I had to get his book. I watched him every time he was on tv. He was good. Then he died. That is too bad because even my children's parenting generation can learn great details from him. I had friends who commented that they liked my techniques. Mine? Not. Dr Hiam Ginott's.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite parenting book.......2007-02-25

This book is a wonderful addition to any parents' library. I am a child psychiatrist who recommends it frequently to parents. It clearly discusses how important language is in our relationship with our children without being judgmental or preachy. It clearly outlines verbal patterns that many parents get into and helpful strategies to get out of those patterns. The premise is simple --- we need to listen more. However, if you are someone who recognizes this is easier said than done, I recommend reading this book. I get hundreds of books out of the library; there are few that I ultimately purchase. This was one of those few.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info but light on correction.......2007-01-09

I thought there was some good information but I think it was light on correction. While I believe that we need to create a loving, safe, and encouraging environment for our children I also believe that there are times when children defy authority and need to be corrected. This book tries to combat the problem before it happens by the way we communicate with them. Although communication is key to the Parent/child relationship, children need to know that the Parent is in charge, that they must obey the first time and without argument. Don't get me wrong, children are a beautiful blessing from God and they need to be nurtured so carefully. But along with that nurturing comes this demand for obedience because I am their authority. The book was light on parental authority and presented parents merely as guides in a child's life rather than an authority to be obeyed and to protect them. I think our society could use a bit more respect for authority.

5 out of 5 stars Best Parenting Book I've Read.......2006-08-18

The whole premise of the book is that love and common sense are not enough to raise most children well. Good parenting skills need to be *learned*. This book gives terrific examples of good and not so good parenting with each topic it covers. I've read at least a dozen parenting books (I have a very "highly spirited" 9 year old boy) and this one has made a big difference for me in my parenting. The emphasis on validating children's feelings somehow resonated better with me with this book than others, I think because the authors are particularly gifted in presenting the child's perspective. Using just a couple of the techniques in the book, I have been able to keep my son's emotional outbursts to a minimum -- and therefore my own, too. Better for me, and clearly better for him! I understand him better now.

4 out of 5 stars More Information About an Old Friend.......2002-02-25

Maria Weller, as I knew her in Boston in the early 1970's, was a marvellous person who worked with me at Honeywell Information Systems. My wife and I became good friends of Maria's and saw her frequently both before and during her illness. We knew her two sons and her daughter.

Ruth-Alice Von Bismark, Maria's sister, came to visit us after Maria's death to find our more about Maria's life in Boston and about her Boston friends.

I found the book fascinating, both for the letters and for Ruth-Alice historical notes that helped me to better understand Maria and Dietrich Bonhoffer.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Look into Devotion.......2002-01-29

I had a difficult time reading this book. It is quite time-consuming (because of it's unusual format) and emotionally difficult due to its content. However, I'm glad I've read this book. It gave me a wonderful insight into a couple's very devoted relationship even though they were separated very soon into their relationship. The way their story plays out is heart-wrenching and difficult to read. But because this was an actual relationship, it's very worth-while.

    Book Description

Alban Senior Consultant Mann draws on her lengthy experience in helping congregations deal with the hurdles and anxieties of expansion or contraction in size. Often, congregations experiencing size change do not recognize the need to change culture and form as part of the successful adaptation process. Mann details the adjustments in attitude-as well as practice-that are necessary to support successful size change.

    5 out of 5 stars Aha -- now I get it!.......2006-08-13

A helpful little book that articulates why churches get "stuck" in plateau zones, with worship attendance hovering between 50 and 70, or between 150 and 200, or between 350 to 400, or between 800 and 1000. There are invisible forces at work -- wrapped up in the identity and self-understanding of the church -- that inhibit growth at these levels. This book explains what those forces are, and offers a few suggestions.

I have an interesting history with this book; initially, this book helped me to understand that we should not be counting members so much as we should be counting worshipers. More recently, I have come to think that even counting worshipers is not what we really ought to be measuring. How many people is your church helping to grow spiritually, and what is the rate of that growth? To what degree are people internalizing the gospel and seeking to live by it? Those, I think, are the real questions. Of course, those kind of numbers are difficult to measure!

Nevertheless, this book is helpful if you believe that your church may be stuck!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2001-08-10

The author explains well how difficult it is for a church to make a size transition. She explains the systemic dynamics that affect church growth and gives some ideas of how to best deal with the problems. This book is a must read for anyone that has noticed their church growth plateau and doesn't understand why.

    Book Description

Finally, Alice is thirteen. But being a teenager isn't always as fantastic as Alice dreamed it would be. A sophisticated night on the town with her brother, Lester, and an overnight train trip to Chicago with Elizabeth and Pamela are exciting, but they also give her a first-hand look at some of the perils of grown-up life.

The problem is, Alice doesn't really feel like a grown-up. But she doesn't feel like a kid anymore, either. She feels in-between -- and that's a pretty confusing place to be!

Sorry, that was me freaking out at how good this book was! I found it even more realistic and even more popping! I now feel I am one of the characters in this book. I also think that the part of the story where Pamela dressed up to be nineteen, got a date with a guy, flirted with him all night, kissed him, went into her compartment, the guy followed her in and if it hadn't been for Alice and Elizabeth throwing themselves at the door and screaming, she would've been raped very cautionary! Take this story to heart, no grain of salt needed and you may be surprised at how feel when this story is over.

    Blessed be!!

5 out of 5 stars It is about growing up...........2002-07-25

this book is really great. it's about alice turning 13 and she, Pamela, and Elizabeth going to Chicago over the summer for a week. To visit Aunt Sally because that was her b-day present to Alice.
At the end of the year, a teacher retires and Miss Summers gives everyone an assignment about poetry that is true. I like this book because the author indicates about friendships, going through changes when you're 13, and learning about sad things that had happened back in the past.
Like the fact Alice had accidentally memorized her wrong poem in class. The poem she had said was about her mother. It was sentimental and really sad.
So on the train to Chicago, Pamela meets a guy who is disrepectful. So read it for yourself. It explains about REAL teenage life and friendships. And Pamela gets gum in her hair and getting it cut really short.
Elizabeth tells Alice and Pamela about God. Like refusing to forgive someone is an unforgiveable sin and what God looks like in her opinion.
Alice's dad and Miss Summers go at a music conference together in Michigan when Alice gets back. So for the second time, read this if you're curious with REAL teenage life as 13.

    4 out of 5 stars A Fun Mistake.......2002-03-24

I must say this is the best mistake I ever read....I mean that as a compliment because this story rox! This is a very funny and fun crazy unique story that will make you laugh when you turn to the first page..IM TELLING YOU, READ THIS, WHETHER YOU BUY IT, BORROW IT FROM THE LIBRARY, STEAL IT, i dont care, this is the best book ever and its about three friends on a 'road trip' on a train. P.S. Something very shocking happens to pamela on the train!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2002-03-23

I picked this book because it is a great book for kids to read when they are getting older. It talks about three friends who couldnt wait to be 13. But when they were finally 13 Alice thought she was in between. She didnt think she was like her friends not acting too old like Pamela or not acting like a little kid like Elizabeth. I would recommend this book to kids. It is a great book because this book talks about getting older and getting more mature.

Baby Precious Always Shines, a delightful selection from the 300 love notes that Alice B. Toklas accidentally deposited with the rest of Gertrude Stein's papers in the Beinecke Library at Yale, would not have been possible before the 1980s, when the locked cabinet in which they were kept was finally opened to scholars. In her excellent introduction, Kay Turner (whose other books include I Dream of Madonna: Women's Dreams of the Goddess of Pop) explains that with their baby talk and constant blessings, the notes provide "a tantalizing mosaic of a marriage between two women that was built to last." Composed in the "word-inverted, long-breathed, rolling, repetitive, refluent style that Stein invented," they touch on everyday events in the Stein-Toklas household and reiterate Stein's love and desire for Toklas. Many seem to have been left for Toklas to find in the morning beside the manuscripts that Stein had written during the night. A few were written by Toklas to Stein. Turner also offers a convincing new reading of Stein's famously obscure "cows" (in A Book Concluding with As a Wife Has a Cow: A Love Story and elsewhere), previously thought to signify female orgasm; she argues that Stein and Toklas subscribed to the "cult of regularity" that swept Europe in the first decades of the 20th century. Indeed, the love notes, despite their Steinian verbal play, leave little doubt that the recurring cows, "now sweet smelly and complete," are bowel movements--further evidence, for Turner, of the women's extraordinary intimacy, their love "express[ing] itself daily in the rituals of bodily caretaking."

    Book Description

Off and on, during the entire period they were together, Gertrude and Alice wrote each other little love notes.Calling her "wifey" and most often addressing her as "baby precious," Stein scribbled her love for Toklas in quick moments of unselfconscious desire, notes that are small but significant testimonies to her long-lived love. And on occasion, Toklas penned or typed letters back to her "husband."These notes are brief, mantra-like enticements: tender, beseeching, caring and confessing, funny and game, sexually-charged and sincere, quotidian and queer, but always passionate. Each one marks the pleasures--infrequently, the pains--of married love. When fitted together, the notes create a tantalizing mosaic of a marriage between two women that was built to last.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into the relationship between two remarkable people.......2000-05-07

How wonderful to read about the emotions of what is sometimes considered to be "deviant" love. I believe they would each be honored to know that their true relationship is public and, for the most part, that people are touched by their genuine caring for each other. I highly recommend this book, especially for those people who find it hard to understand relationships between same-sex couples.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2000-02-16

What a hoot! Kay Turner has done it again, producing a book that's both entertaining and eye-opening -- a delightful-as-usual combination of the scholarly and hilarious. Brava! A wonderful gift for and/or from yer girlfriend.

5 out of 5 stars Gertrude and Alice Get Real!.......2000-01-16

Just imagine having your love notes found, analyzed and published for the world to see? Well, this is it. One of the world's most famous and iconic couples' lyrical notes to each other are here for all to share. Should it have been done? Some may say 'no', but considering the fact that they are by Stein, one of the most well-known, unread writers in history, and Toklas, whose place in history largely hinges on her hashish fudge, I'd say 'why not?' These ladies have long been used to public curiosity and scrutiny and became household names during their 1934-35 visit to the US. The introductory essay alone, though scholarly, is worth the price of admission---"Having a cow" will take on a whole new meaning in your vocabulary!

5 out of 5 stars Tom Peter's style, excellent pick-me-ups.......2007-09-19

First, the title and subtitle: Between Jobs: Recover, Rethink, Rebuild. Its definitely something I can relate to - but I LOVE how she sets the tone with the recover from this "loss", rethink your career and future, and rebuild - its time to act now and move on!

Next, the format. At the bottom of the cover it says "501 Proven Strategies For Success"... is this in the same format as Tom Peter's Wow book? Yep! I love this format because you don't have to put a ton of time and critical analysis into it... basically you get 501 ideas, tips, etc. that you can read when you want. Read one a day and think about it, or read several pages of any chapter... whatever you need.

Billie starts the book with 10 questions for you to help you deal with being "between jobs" and asks you to contemplate the questions before, during and after reading the book. I love how she begins each chapter with a quote from a "job loss survivor." I hated reading articles on how to find jobs by people that had never been through a real job loss, and these little quotes make this book that much more heart-felt.

So then we're on to content. I remember at the beginning of my job search I'd get some books on techniques, resumes, interviewing, etc. Some of them were HUGE, and hard to make it through. And I could find the same information on the internet, regurgitated in various fashions. What was at first interesting later became cliche, and then contributed to the overall discouragement of the job search. Billie has 8 chapters wrapping up the 501 strategies, and a final chapter with quotes from the job loss survivors. It is not preachy, wordy, overly-verbose (like some of my blog posts ;) ) or out of line.

As I related to just about evey single point in her book I realized that this is a collection of the "best-of-the-best" tips out there... from your dad, your counselor, your coach, HR, or whoever. This is the collection that I'd recommend to anyone either in college or a professional that just lost their job. Here are some examples of some points I liked (with the chapters in bold) - note there are 501 of these, I just pulled out some that jumped out at me - but this book is full of wisdom:

    * Getting a Grip: Let go of your old job. Give yourself some time, and then begin the journey.
    * Putting the Pieces Together: Don't be afraid of or reject these two words: "Starting Over." Each day brings the opportunity to begin again.
    * Packaging the Product: A messy, cluttered resume should not be sent to anyone, including your mother.
    * Building Bridges: Don't ask your professional references for a job.
    * Completing the Application Form: Include "reason for leaving" if asked to do so on the application, however, choose your words carefully. "Fired" or "terminated" can be replaced with "will explain." Words such as "downsized, reorganization, work force reduction and restructuring" can be used if applicable to your situation.
    * Presenting Yourself in the Interview: Respond only to the question asked. Save the minute details. If the employer wants more information, they will ask.
    * Negotiating the Best Deal: Be prepared to explain your value and what makes you stand out from other applicants with the same or comparable credentials.
    * The Best is Yet to Come: Be willing to "pay your dues" and prove yourself.

Awesome book - I highly recommend it!
