Coping with the death of a loved is among lifes most difficult challenges. It can be lonely and confusing. Attempting to deny or gloss over the feelings confusion and loneliness of grief only prolongs and even intensifies the pain. A Group I Never Wanted to Join is written for people who are struggling with the death of someone near to them; it is intended to help them see at a glance how grief feels and come to terms with their loss and how it affects them. Marty McNunns goal is also to help others see what it means to grieve, since no one can really understand this complex journey until he or she has experienced the loss of a significant person. A Group I Never Wanted to Join defines the common feelings, symptoms, and stages of grief, and also dispels some many of the myths about this lifelong process. There are personal stories of different kinds of loss, including the death of a spouse, child, parent, and suicide. The book also provides information and resources for those helping others work through their grief

A self-help guide to dealing with one of life's most overpowering challenges - coping with the death of a loved one. .......2007-06-09
Written by lay pastor and certified grief recovery specialist Marty McNunn, A Group I Never Wanted to Join is a self-help guide to dealing with one of life's most overpowering challenges - coping with the death of a loved one. Featuring personal stories from individuals who have suffered many types of loss - that of a child, parent, or spouse - A Group I Never Wanted to Join walks the reader through reactions to grief, the importance of forgiving the dead, dealing with loneliness, finding comfort from the Bible, and more. Though A Group I Never Wanted to Join is spiritual, the emphasis lies primarily upon the day-to-day aspects of surviving grief rather than religious implications. Recommended for readers of all faiths.
A group I never wanted to join.......2007-01-16
At last, a book that gave me hope! A book that calmed my heart and assured me that I was not going crazy. The stories gave me hope an encouragement that I COULD find happiness again after the death of my granddaughter!
Emotional, Practical and Helpful.......2006-08-01
I've known Marty McNunn for years and have been blessed by her insights and help. This book is a likely extension of who Marty is - kind, caring, sensitive, and helpful. This compilation of personal stories is a marvelous way to talk about what grief is and what it feels like. It is told by real people sharing their very real stories. The additional professional information is also important to the understanding of what grief is and what it can do. This is a book that will help people already grieving the loss of a loved one - as well as those who want to learn about it before the grief hits.
Grief Support.......2006-07-16
This book is an invaluable reference for the grieving process. Common responses, many of which a person might not expect, are explained and described. The individual stories provide something anyone could relate to and increase understanding of the experience of grief. The chapters at the BACK of the book are wonderful suggestions for actively processing grief. Don't miss them!

Pretty good book.......2005-01-03
Here is the description on the back of the book:
"GET RICH QUICK!
The bold print seemed aimed at her directly: "Detail-oriented student for cataloguing personal library." But when Robin Bailey answers the ad, she is surprised that she has already been recommended for the job by Parker Swanson, the gorgeous new guy in school. Parker's grandfather will pay her to organize the collection of antique books that belonged to Parker's stepmother, a Medium who died by her own hand. Suddenly Robin is plunged into Parker's dark and twisted family saga, trying to protect his stepsister Claudia who is haunted by visions of her evil mother and driven to desperation. Parker says that Claudia is crazy. But Robin has heard and seen the ghost! Now her part-time job is a full-time nightmare!"
After reading seven other books by Cusick, I am so used to her style of writing that this book just didn't seem like it totally hit the spot for me, but I think I can blame that partly on getting older. Don't get me wrong, I am positive that if I had read this before I had read all her others, I would have liked it a lot more. Also the ending was pretty surprising, and there was a nice twist. However (WARNING, hint of ending!),
I was mad that in the end the main character didn't even make up her mind about which guy she liked, and there was not enough romance!
If you are under the age of 16, or haven't read any other of this author's books, I would recommend this book, but some fans of Cusick's might be a bit disappointed because she has written better ones.
Wonderful!.......2002-04-10
This book was great from start to finish. I loved the way romance was mixed with horror, and it made for a great ending! I would definitely recommend this book to any adolescent who likes to be a little scared.
One of the best!.......2001-01-10
I was in the library looking for an autobiography and I made a short trip to the "young adult mystery section" and I happened to come across this book. So I checked it out. This book was really good. It was well written and well described that it was so easy to get a picture in your mind. It had a really nice ending to it. I couldn't believe who the killer was at the end.
Doggone good.......2000-03-25
Totally rad. The killer was someone who never even crossed my mind. Great plot, great suspense, great characters, all in all a great read.
One of the best books by Richie.......1999-10-10
This book, Help Wanted, is by one of the best authors I've ever read. Richie Tankersley Cusick is one of the most amazing authors I've ever read a book by. This book is very surprising. It is written well and it is sure to give you a scare. The ending was very surprising to me and was very dramatic. If you like scary books and you like Richie Tankersley Cusick this is a book for you. Five stars!

"This novel is a fast paced read that will have you hanging on every word. Shawan Lewis has incorporated four unique stories with just enough intrigue to mesmerize you and then manages to connect each characters story. Thereby, creating a remarkable debut with Help Wanted."
Out of the ordinary.......2006-01-11
Anela and Gabriel Grace have been married 25 years. Anela longed for her first love and Gabriel lived a secret life. It is what happens next that shape the crossroads.
The Rainmaker, Hailee Shaw, has been plagued by the recent rash judgment on the part of her mother Pashen, an ex-cop who was now working the wrong side of the law. No life, no love, no pass, Hailee has made the deal of all deals in an effort to save the only person she truly loves. Can Pashen empathize with the commitment her daughter has made on her behalf?
The Depressed Diva, Onyx Devoe is a singer stuck in the position of a claims representative. Although she's working on her demo, she's a little lifeless. A chance meeting with a client will alter her life, but is the sacrifice more than she's willing to give?
The Working Girl, Paris Parker, is a student, single mom and live in girlfriend. Paris is convinced that she's destined to do better, especially for her son Maceo. He deserves it. Her man has more game than Iverson. The funny thing is Paris isn't tripping on dude. Will her thunder be shortened by a faulty competitor?
The Virtuous Woman, Effie Mae Peters, is a housewife living with her husband Clarence of 40 years just waiting to move into the last phase of their lives together. Clarence finds that he needs a change and Effie Mae doesn't fit his needs all of a sudden. Love doesn't end because the door closes. Conflicted but committed to her vow, will she allow herself to answer?
Four different women set out to grieve the loss of their friend Anela and find that they all shared in the fulfillment of her love, comfort and understanding as their lives wavered.
Somewhat inconsistent with the characters in certain places, but it was a different story that allots you to savor in silver linings.
Guardian Angel.......2006-01-03
Anela's a young woman that has had her share of struggles. Due to these trials of her own, she's fortunate enough to offer assistance to four others who are in desperate need with no promise or prospect of hope.
Hailee Shaw, a college student, is besieged as she's trying to handle her studies and tackle her mother's dilemmas. There is a debt that seems to become more and more difficult to pay off.
Onyx Devoe is stuck in a dead end job and all she really wants to do is sing. Wayne Cartwright is everything she's ever wanted in a man, and she quickly falls head over heels for him. It's not long before his selfish ways are revealed.
Paris Parker is a struggling young mother trying to maintain a happy home with her man Russell while dodging advances as she's trying to pay the bills. Russell is lazy, inconsiderate and a womanizer and someday his ways may cause her to lose her job.
Effie Peters, a middle aged married woman, has been married a lifetime to her love Clarence. A single venture to the store has him returning with his resignation to her. Believe it or not Effie is accepting of his middle age crisis.
This was a different type of read for me. Each story is relatable. I don't know about others, but I have wished on many occasions some additional help was available in my life. This is a really good book.

Need a change from your usual read? Sit back and enjoy Shawan Lewis debut novel "Help Wanted", where a higher power has the final say and if you believe... then all will prevail.
I enjoyed the four stories in this book. I was especially partial to the stories "The Rain Maker" and "The Working Girl". In "The Working Girl", I appreciate that Paris was able to resist her boss's sexual advances, even though she could have gotten payback for Russ's cheating a**.
An enjoyable read; let's see what Shawan has in store for us next. Well done!

Help Wanted by Shawan Lewis: An PeoplewholoveGoodBooks Review.......2005-12-13
Join Hailee, Onyx, Paris, and Effie as these ladies embark on a journey that while filled with pain and sorrow leads to joy and a new beginning. This book is 4 stories in one that leads to a shocking but touching revelation as these 4 women seem destined to meet and share in each other's lives. Hailee while trying to save her mother's life agrees to be the other woman to Lucas Blacke....a powerful and ruthless drug dealer who also just happens to be her mother's boyfriend. Onyx is an aspiring R&B singer who meets and falls in love with Wayne Griffin, an NBA player , despite the drama the relationship brings. After finding out she's pregnant, Onyx is determined to make it work until Wayne drops a bomb on her and she loses the baby. Paris is a single mom who is also an college student. After landing a internship at a prestigious investment firm, things begin to fall apart as her fiance can't keep a job or stop cheating on her, but it isn't until she catches him with her boss's wife that things really begin to spiral out of control as someone at work is trying to sabotage her and she loses her job. Effie has been a good wife to her husband Clarence of 40 years, so she is shocked when he leaves her for a younger woman. A woman who it turns out is only after his settlement money and is determined to get it by any means necessary. It isn't until tragedy strikes that Clarence realizes his mistake but will it be late?
Help Wanted is one of those stories that will make you laugh, cry, or just sit and shake your head. It is a page-turner from beginning to end as it captures your attention and doesn't let go. Shawan Lewis has written a great debut with an excellent storyline. It is a must-read! I give this book 4 stars. Reviewed by Shay C of PeoplewholoveGoodBooks

Funny, touching - and helpful travel essays.......2006-02-03
Thought this was going to be a how-to book, and with an upcoming trip wanted a little help. Was so much more! The descriptions and dialogue - with bad English where it was used - made me feel like I was right there. The stories had enough travel detail so that now I want to go to Nepal, and even Guam!
Great book and each story stands on its own so I was able to just read a story whose title caught my attention. I really recommend it.

Number Two In The Mac Fontana Series.......2000-01-10
While not really a brain teaser, Emerson writes a murder mystery set in Staircase, Washington, a small town featuring transplanted firefighter Mac Fontana with wit and aplomb. Not to dismiss the secondary characters, Emerson breathes life into each and every one. (I found my copy, autographed(!) in a second-hand bookstore in Seattle.)
Outstanding! The best in an exceptionally good series........1999-05-12
What can I say that would do justice to this book? I have a tendency to gush, but to do so is an insult to the character of Mac Fontana, as well as to the deceptively simple, highly evocative prose of Emerson. I am so hooked on this writer's work! When do I get my next fix???

Hard to stay focused........1998-12-09
Help Wanted is a boring book of short stories, all dealing with young people and working. It told about different jobs and what the daily routine and obstacles that young people had to go through with them. I found that the short stories seemed very long and dragged on and on. It was very hard to pay attention to and was not fun to read.I would only recommend it to someone if they like reading things that contain nothing interesting in them.
