    Book Description

Aldous Huxley once remarked that 'For every traveller who has any taste of his own, the only useful guidebook will be the one he himself has written. All others are an exasperation - they make him travel long miles to see a mound of rubbish; they go into ecstasies over mere antiquity.' While describing the history of Portugal from antiquity to the present, the author - without going 'into ecstasies' - has attempted to bring into perspective those many aspects of Portugal's past most likely to interest the educated visitor. Portugal has been a country in her own right since early in the 12th century. Long referred to as being 'Britain's oldest ally', but often placed in the shade of Spain, she deserves equal attention. Whether it be her outstanding voyages of discovery, or the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, or her more recent bloodless 'revolution', Portugal has remained in the limelight of European history. Drive through the Sierra Morena in winter and hear the pebbles from swollen streams crashing on the car roof, bake by day in the mid-summer heat of Old Castle, unwind on a thyme-scented Guadalajara hillside to the flute-like tinkling of sheep bells at dusk.

Following the personal style set by this series, the author indulges his own fancies while at the same time offering independent travellers a thorough and up-to-date guide to wild Spain.

      Book Description

A definitive concise history of Portugal, from its earliest beginnings right up to the politics and life of the present day.

It was not until the twelfth century that Portugal became a country in its own right, having been a Roman colony and then having suffered both Barbarian and Islamic invasions.

The golden age of discoveries, the reign and foresight of Henry the Navigator, and great seamen such as Vasco da Gama led to the founding of Portugal's empire and wealth. Troubled times followed: in 1755 Lisbon was virtually leveled by the "Great Earthquake," and the country had hardly recovered its former prosperity when it was overrun by Napoleon's troops at the start of the Peninsular War, to be followed not long after by the Miguelite civil war. The middle decades of the nineteenth century saw the Port Wine trade flourishing, and further expansion into Africa.

During the last quarter of the twentieth century, ever since the bloodless revolution of 1974 overthrew the rightwing dictatorship of Salazar, the country has regained its stability, and now takes its rightful place in the European Community.

Illustrated with maps and line drawings, the book has a full Historical Gazetteer cross-referenced to the main text that concentrates on the historic sites in a country that has retained its individuality and thus its appeal to the individual traveler.

4 out of 5 stars Decent, basic travel history.......2007-05-20

I don't understand what all the fuss below is about. Some people must be upset with Mr. Robertson for reasons other than the actual content of the book. Yes, he does spell 'Os Luciados' a couple of different ways in this book, and that does seem to be poor editing; however, google indicates that the "misspellings" are all legitimate. I suppose a catholic might find fault with his characterization of Fatima as a "spiritual disneyland." But then, if he wrote about it from a Catholic perspective, it would be a theology rather than a history book.

This book is very obviously meant to be a quick overview of Portugese history for people who are on vacation there. My book dealer even helpfully put it in the "travel" section, rather than the history section. Many times in my travels, I found myself in an interesting place, completely at the mercy of the cretinous author of whatever travel book I was able to procure for myself. Having a slim book like this I can read while travelling, and refer to while in museums and other places of culture (say, to remind myself who Luis de Camoes might be) makes the trip that much more exciting and relevant. While travelling, you do not want some vast tome, impossible to carry around with you: you want a light reference, which includes timelines, and, yes, lists of Visigothic kings. I think this book admirably succeeds in its purpose for Portugal. My trip was dramatically enriched by having this book along. I probably wouldn't choose this book in studying for a test on Portugese history, and I did find it a bit dry in places and perhaps a bit spare in others. I also allow there may be better examples of this 'travel genre' on the subject of Portugese history, but those weren't available in the bookstore. I think the average english speaking tourist to Portugal will be just as pleased with this book as I was.

      1 out of 5 stars You can't call this a history!.......2004-03-27

This is not really a history but mainly lists of events a large number of them presented in an unusual way and with the wrong date. Names are often spelt wrong, some beyond recognition. Others are quite amusing in their changed form, like Manrique (Manique). We the readers deserve better, much better. If you want a concise history of Portugal good for the traveller, then you have the right book in Portugal a Companion History by Jose Hermano Saraiva. That one is good!

1 out of 5 stars Read it with caution.......2004-02-28

      Read it with caution

This book contains a lot of information, some correct some incorrect, some useful some unlikely to interest the general reader. Do you really want to read a page-long list of Visigothic kings? Worse than this kind of information is the considerable number of errors,as a typical mistake, "The Luciades". This is supposed to be "The Lusiads" (see "The Lusiads", Oxford World's Classics, a five-star book). This traveller's history puts together a lot of material from different sources, but does so unselectively and without checking for accuracy. This is as bad as the Tyson-Ward Portuguese books!

5 out of 5 stars Never mind the fanatics.......2004-01-17

A basic comprehensive summary of Portugal's history. Nothing anti-Catholic about it. Today Fatima is indeed little more than Disneyland for religious zelots.

      1 out of 5 stars Anti-Catholic Bias.......2003-09-11

I got the book today. First thing I did was check to see what the author says about the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima. He wrote "The ecclesiastical authorities, eager to reap the fruits of fervent devotion - as so evident at Lourdes - were not slow to seize on their infantile delusions by further imposing on the gullible and largely illiterate peasantry. Pilgrimages were expediently organized. Inordinate sums were spent by Salazar in erecting a monstrous basilica at Fatima, consecrated in 1953, which is little less than an affront to any instinct of veneration, well-described as a "Spiritual Disneyland"." Tis enough! The author is an anti-Catholic bigot!

During its "golden age," Spain was a political giant whose influence spanned the world from Germany to the Western Pacific. Rich on American gold and silver, Spain was able to send the Armada against England, defeat the Turks and challenge France for the hegemony of Europe.

This book will unlock the secrets of Spain's vibrant and colorful past, its people and culture for the interested traveller. It takes the reader on a journey from the earliest settlements on the Iberian Peninsula, through the influences of the Romans, the Goths and the Muslims, the traumas of expansion and the end of the Empire, right up to the present.

1 out of 5 stars Read Iberia instead.......2000-11-26

Having read several other Traveller's History books (Turkey, China, Greece) and enjoyed them, I expected much more than I got from this book. The author makes no connections and assumes the reader already knows a lot about Spanish history, in which case, why read this one? I was particularly turned off by the author's terrible punctuation and sentences that went on for 10 lines. Doesn't anyone edit anymore? Wish I had read the other reviews before buying this book. Someone planning a trip to Spain should read James Michner's Iberia instead Ñ not as much history, perhaps, but a lot more understanding of the country and what shaped it.

2 out of 5 stars Biassed history always unwelcome.......2000-08-06

While shallow enough for those like me who have little patience for over-scrupulous books, it is strikingly biassed and opinionated. Some remarks about historic figures are blatantly subjective, and bias reaches its zenith when the author goes to great length criticising the Socialist government of Felipe Gonzalez. As a Spaniard who has lived that period, while I acknowledge the right of the author to hold an opinion on Gonzalez's period in office, his comments go way beyond admissibility in a history book. I cannot recommend this book.

Bought this book in Canada from Chapters. Dropped it after the first 100 pages. I love history and enjoy history books, but this one is terribly boring and unprofessional. There is no systematic approach whatsoever: events, places and names mentioned without proper introduction or reference. The book fails to build link between the places you might visit (it's a "travelers history" after all) and the historic events. It is neither popular reading nor academic textbook.

Hugh Thomas, best known for his authoritative analysis of the Spanish Civil War, has chosen from diaries, letters, memoirs and novels ranging across five centuries of Madrid's history. The anthology brilliantly evokes the drama and personalities of the past by drawing on eyewitness accounts and commentaries from both visitors and inhabitants including Beaumarchais, Beckford, Luis Bu§uel, Alexandre Dumas, Goya, Victor Hugo, Hemingway, Napoleon and scores of others.

Includes: the Duke of Wellington walking in the shady Paseo del Prado; the Earl of Clarendon on 17th-century bullfights; Salvador Dal° playing a surrealist joke on a snooty barman at the Ritz; Rubens in the AlcÝzar; Manet at the Prado, generals and anarchists in the Puerta del Sol; Casanova and Trotsky in prison.

Madrid was founded by the Moors and only rose to prominence in the 16th century when King Philip II chose to make it Spain's first permanent court and the center from which he would manage his newly emancipated empire. But it was not until two centuries later that Madrid would become the grandly aristocratic city that it is today. Historian Hugh Thomas has researched five centuries of Madrid's history as recorded in diaries, letters, memoirs, and even novels. The result is an outstanding anthology which vividly evokes the drama and personalities of the past with eyewitness accounts and commentaries from both visitors and inhabitants of Spain's premier city. Enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone planning a vacation trip or a business visit to Madrid, A Traveller's Companion To Madrid is informed and informative -- and would well serve as a template for how other historians might create histories of their cities both in Europe and in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars mysterious but real ancient mining digs and artifacts.......1998-12-14

Whitshaw spends her life in an arid part of Spain trying to put together and understand several pieces of an unknown pre-Roman ancient civilization. Among the pieces of her most interesting puzzle are an ancient but apparently still functioning (in 1928) aquaduct with no discoverable destination, a castle built of multiple layers each from a different era, unusual ancient mining processes in the rich nearby mining fields, a very puzzling rectangular pool cut in the bottom of the Rio Tinto river, several different and very curious water sources one with an unknown "temple" somewhere out under a desert floor, and the fascinating villagers and local natives of a time when this area was very remote and inaccessable. This is one of my all-time favorite books as it gives not only some very real and mysterious puzzles for the mind to gnaw on but a strong flavor for the time and place Elena writes from. She also suggests other aquaducts scattered along the Rio Tinto river and describes how the area guarded by the castle was the entrance to one of the ancient world's richest mineral fields worked by humans and perhaps, well, something else which is too small and peculiar to be human and digs vertical shafts into mineral deposits unlike any later miners. She also searches for the ways that the ancients got the wealth of this vast mineral field out into the wider world. Truly a book full of food for thought.

      Book Description

Portugal, the 'ancient ally', is a country easily accessible, with an enviable climate, welcoming inhabitants and famous beaches. English and Spanish apart, Portuguese is more widely spoken than any other European tongue. This historical guide draws on personal experiences ranging from a residence of three years to regular visits since 1936. It combines introductory chapters on eight centuries of nationhood, and sections on the Roman and Islamic past, architecture, painting, music and birds, with visits to the great cities of Lisbon and Oporto, and to the country's varied regions. The author's aim is not merely to describe; rather to account for the emergence of what the visitor may expect to see. He avoids jargon, preferring clarity and moderation - although permitting himself an occasional expression of saudade (the nostalgia for Portugal which haunts all who have loved this land). BR> Harold Livermore studied in Portugal in 1937 and taught there, in Cambridge and in Canada. He was educational director of the Luso-Brazilian Council in London and is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and of the Portuguese Academy of History. His first 'History of Portugal' was awarded the CamSes Prize and was followed by a 'New History' and a 'Shorter History'. He has also published a history of Spain and an account of the medieval origins of both countries. A selection of his articles, 'Essays on History and Literature', appeared in 2000.

      5 out of 5 stars Thank you!.......2005-01-27

This traveller's history takes the visitor to Portugal on a tour of the country exploring historical links everywhere. It digs deep into the history of Portugal, even before Portugal, and Lusitania (the Roman province where most of Portugal is now), and discusses treasures like the recently found cave drawings of the Coa valley in the Douro. It also has other interesting features like a chapter on music and one on birds. There is one on wine too. This is a serious work that also makes good beach or bedtime reading. It is something to be thankful for at a time when a lot is being published on Portugal, but the quality varies. I have read some amateurish books on Portuguese language life and culture and World cultures Portugal. After that experience, it is refreshing to have something you feel is a competent work like Livermore's traveller's history. Thank you!

First published in 1930, this was the first translation of the Commentarios since original publication in 1647. The work covers an historically significant period, describing the operations leading up to the capture from the Portuguese of Ormuz, in the Persian Gulf, by an Anglo-Persian force. Of importance in the history of the rise of the Indian Empire, this is the first printed account of the Portuguese version of the affair.

The appendices include many previously unpublished Portuguese documents, the most important of which is the full Journal of Edward Monnox, who was present throughout the operations.

        4 out of 5 stars A journey worth making.......2001-01-03

This book, which I have burst upon quite unexpectedly, offered me a wealth of peaceful meditation and subtle joy. Maugham elaborates on his "spanish themes" with a casualness that easily wins the beholder. It can be called in some ways a travel book, recalling the chapters in which he more than alludes to the Spanish way of living, i.e. their eating habits, the look and feel of their cities and so on. Yet, Maugham also shares with his reader the fruits of his long research he conducted on Spaniards of the Golden Age. What I find the most pleasurable in these memoirs is the way Maugham reveals the fact behind the fiction regarding many issues, to name a few; Spanish literature and drama of the Golden Ages, the life and days (and the religious ferver, which he finds nonexistent of) El Greco. At any rate, this book is excellent reading, and reveals between the lines, the sometimes ironic, but never cynical humor of the artist.

            Book Description

This unique reference is a comprehensive encyclopedia dedicated to the institutions, religion, politics, and culture in Muslim societies throughout the world. Placing particular emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World contains over 750 articles in four volumes on Muslims in the Arab heartland as well as South and Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. An invaluable resource, the Encyclopedia offers extensive comparative and systematic analyses of Islamic beliefs, institutions, movements, practices, and peoples on an international scale. The alphabetically arranged articles range from brief 500-word essays to major interpretive and synthetic treatment of topics such as the Islamic state, pilgrimage, law, marriage, and foreign relations. Related entries cover areas of general interest such as social and political movements, women, Muslim minorities, human rights, Islam in the West, and interreligious affairs. And prominent figures that had a lasting impact on Islam are explored including Muhammad, Aga Khan, Malcolm X, Muhammad Iqbal, 'Ali Shari 'ati, Ayatollah Khomeini, and Hasan al-Turabi. Truly multidisciplinary, this work reflects the breadth and depth of contemporary scholarship in Islamic studies. Combining the tools of the humanities and social sciences to examine the interrelationship of religion, politics, and culture in Muslim societies, it explains the changing realities of Muslim life. Its unique focus makes The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World an invaluable reference for scholars and students of many disciplines, government and media analysts, and anyone interested in increasing their understanding of Islamic politics and culture.

            5 out of 5 stars Invaluable.......2002-01-06

This is a fantastic set of books, both for the layperson and the scholar. It's written by a wide assortment of experts in the field, people who are extremely qualified and unbiased. A wide range of topics is covered. This IS the modern Islamic world, though, so there's very little historical information. But I use it constantly, both to satisfy my own curiosity and for a book I'm writing. Thank you to the editors and contributors of this great work.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo, Mabruk ! Dr. Esposito.......2001-11-09

I just received my set of 4 volumes and already consulted it for an article I'm preparing. I was surprised at the breadth of the articles and the references provided. The information available in each article extends beyond the basic and lends itself easily to in-depth investigation. A truly excellent work and well worth the expense. For the Middle East Studies professional, analyst, academic, consultant this encyclopedia will be very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent encyclopedia about MODERN islamic topics.......2001-06-06

I had heard much praise about this encyclopedia. Still, I was hesitant to spend the money..... so I visited a library that had them on their shelves. I read and read, for hours - with pleasure! I then went home and placed my order.

Each word/catagory/topic is well explained in plain and easily understandable english. The contributing writers are well established in their respective fields. (John Esposito is the editor and not the sole writer of this encyclopedia.)

I can sincerely recommend this encyclopedia, for scholars, teachers, students all (muslims and non-muslims) interested in knowing more about islam and the muslim word.

              Book Description

The increasing interest in Islam and Islamic culture during the last century and the early part of this century created a demand for an encyclopaedic work on Islam. For the first time in history a truly international team of scholars began working on one single project. This resulted in The Encyclopaedia of Islam, published in three editions in English, German and French. The Encyclopaedia of Islam remains to this day the only complete encyclopaedic work on Islam. Due to its tremendous success these editions soon went out of print and became valuable collectors' items. Some years later, the publisher decided to start a New Edition, which is now well over halfway to completion. In view of the broad scope of the New Edition and the years needed to complete it, E.J. Brill's First Edition is now available in paperback to meet the immediate needs of scholars, students of Islam, librarians, and even government institutions, in fact, anyone interested in Islam and its rich culture. The paperback First Edition is intended to fill a gap at a very low price. The First Edition is a true mine of information, much of which is not yet available in the New Edition. The value of the First Edition (as well as the New Edition) is recognized worldwide and remains undisputed. In more than 9,000 alphabetically arranged articles, varying in length from 50 to 50,000 words, the whole range of Islamic culture, from religion and literature to the lives of famous Muslims, is treated by some of the world's most famous scholars of the twentieth century. The First Encyclopaedia of Islam was originally published between 1913 and 1936 as The Encyclopaedia of Islam: A Dictionary of the Geography, Ethnography and Biography of the Muhammadan Peoples in four volumes and one supplement volume.

                  Book Description

Since the events of September 11, 2001, students and people everywhere are filled with questions about Islam. What do Muslims believe? Who is Osama bin Laden? What is a jihad? Even though Islam is a major religion with more than one billion followers worldwide and more than six million in the United States alone, there is still uncertainty and misunderstanding about the ideas, tenets, and practice of Islam. Understanding Islam and the people who believe in it has become crucially important in the greater world. The Islamic World: Past and Present is the ideal source for fostering understanding and answering questions. John Esposito's acclaimed four-volume The Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World (1995) set the standard in references on Islam. Adapted from this award-winning set, The Islamic World: Past and Present brings all the scholarship and information of the original to general readers and college and high school students. In addition to the more approachable language and user-friendly page layout, this reference covers events and changes of the last eight years. It also includes entirely new entries to provide coverage of the pre-modern world of Islam. Containing more than 300 articles, it provides an excellent, comprehensive resource for gaining understanding into a belief system that seems mysterious and incomprehensible to many.
