5 out of 5 stars Champion Work.......2006-06-19

In June, 2006 my wife and I traveled extensively through all parts of Cyprus by rental car and carried 4 recently published guidebooks. Even with Lonely Planet and DK carrying 2006 copyrights, neither could hold a candle to Rough Guide (Sept, 2005). Marc Dubin's work is not simply that of a traveler writing a guidebook, but like an expert presenting an insightful, informative, and balanced work. It added immensely to our enjoyment and understanding of Cyprus. The highlights section for each chapter provided an excellent overview of each region, and for the first time I found the maps to be even better than the ones in Lonely Planet. The background information was outstanding for presenting a fair treatment of this divided island, with many excellent spotlights on pertinent Cypriot topics.

At 552 pages it is over twice the length of Lonely Planet's 272 pages and DK's 216. Thanks to Rough Guide we found many places which were not even mentioned in the other books, like the secluded, abandoned cave hermitage of Palea Enklistra or the beautifully situated Kelefos Venetian-era bridge in the Troodos Mountains. The photos are still not as superb as DK, and for that reason I would also recommend DK Top 10 Cyprus (more useful than DK Cyprus), with excellent lists and photos of the island's highlights. All in all, Rough Guide Cyprus is one of the best guidebooks for any country that you could ever find.

5 out of 5 stars No better travel guide to Cyprus.......2006-05-29

At the time of this review, there is no other up-to-date travel guide for visiting Cyprus. The Lonely Planet's "Cyprus" 2nd edition came out right as the Nicosia/Lefkosia opened in 2003 and contains outdated information on the crossing from the Greek/Turkish sides - their 3rd edition is due out this summer. Regardless, LP will have a hard act to follow, since Marc Dubin has written the single most comphrensive travel guide to a country I have ever read. I just returned from a 10 day trip to both 'sides' of Cyprus and used literally almost every page. I wouldn't have been able to see half the things I did without this guide and by relying solely on the state-run information kiosks.

It was astounding to talk to other travellers who showed up to Cyprus as package tourists and were clueless about the political circumstances surrounding the island. This wouldn't have happened if they had stepped out of Larnaca (or controversially, Ercan) airport without having a copy of this guide, if for no other reason that the author constantly integrates both ancient (Greek) and modern (political) historical information into all his location descriptions. Hn addition, there is an appendix of almost 50 pages of a balanced account of the turbulent history of the island that doesn't point sole blame on either side of the Green line. The guide also gives comphrensive information in archeological, endemic plant/animal species, a range of restaurant/lodging recommendations, and scuba diving. Like almost all Rough Guides, this book is intent in educating people to become investigative travellers rather than consuming tourists.

Note that the author frequently warns that pre-packaged tourism rules Cyprus. However, you can still backpack through both sides of Cyprus on intercity 'taxis' (small vans) in the south and dolmus buses in the north. The author is correct when he says that the conditions in hostels in Cyprus aren't comparable to their Northern (or Greek) counterparts and the island is not a budget destination, but you can usually find a hotel in a town for $40-45/night - I found locals in every town who were helpful and even outgoingly friendly after a few minutes of conversation.

3 out of 5 stars details not up to standards, but a few good recommendations.......2007-05-15

it doesn't seem the fact-checking was very good here, unless a bunch of different museums in cyprus decided to change their structure of hours in the past twelve months (we missed three different museums because the guide said they were open late starting in may, rather than only july and august). also, we lost half an hour going around in circles in Paphos in a restaurant that was put on the right road, but 2 km south of where it should have been. normally, i'm used to lonely plant doing a better job of verification on these kinds of things, and if i'm not able to rely on it for that, what's the point ?

nevertheless, we did get some good tips and ideas here.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly Good.......2006-06-19

I used Lonely Planet Cyprus a week after it became available (June 2006) and appreciated its compact size, Highlights section, Itinerary suggestions, up-to-date prices, and organizational format. Having said that, I only used it about 5% of the time while my wife and I drove throughout the entire island. Carrying 3 other guidebooks (Rough Guide, DK, and DK Top 10), I found Lonely Planet to be far too brief in explaining the sites, falling well short of Rough Guide's more insightful and intelligent writing. I used Rough Guide 75% of the time and found that to be much better. Still, if someone only had Lonely Planet, they would have a fairly good tool to get around Cyprus to the main sites. It is only half the size of Rough Guide(272 pages vs. 550), which could be handy for travelers seeking to minimize their load. For in-depth understanding and off-the-beaten track exploration, however, Rough Guide would be the better choice.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre, below typical DK Eyewitness Travel Guides.......2006-06-19

I own about 40 DK Eyewitness Travel Guides and usually take one on my travels to complement a more thoroughly written guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. The photos are always excellent, providing a fine visual overview of places. DK Cyprus, though, was perhaps the least useful DK Travel Guide that I have ever used. The descriptions of places were drier than Cyprus' summer weather, and the photos added little to what was in the more compact, less expensive DK Top 10 Cyprus book. Carrying 4 guidebooks (DK, DK Top 10, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guide) for our travels throughout all regions of the island, I soon realized that I could have been perfectly happy if I had only carried Rough Guide and DK Top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Great for what it does.......2006-06-19

Probably no independent traveler would want to have DK Top 10 as their only guidebook when traveling to Cyprus, but it is an excellent complement to a more thoroughly written guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. The compact size, innumerable photos, and excellent organization make it a joy to carry, and provide many ideas for photographers who seek the best vantage points for their shots. DK Top 10 Cyprus is a fun book to peruse, simple to read, and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended for anyone going to Cyprus; just don't forget to bring another guidebook like Rough Guide if you plan to do any independent traveling.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2006-06-08

Pocket-sized, interesting and brilliantly illustrated. Packed with a wide range of info, from watersports, eating and family fun to the best of art, history and beauty. So easy to read that it's hard to put down, it enabled me to have the holiday of a lifetime in Cyprus.

    Book Description

With development of North Cyprus's resorts, properties, and facilities growing rapidly, this new edition of Bradt's guide to the quieter, Turkish side of this divided island will be appreciated by tourists. Many travelers attracted to this part of the island are interested in exploring the ancient and modern culture of Cyprus, including the history behind the estrangement between the Turkish North and the Greek South, which is discussed in this guide. Discovery of classical ruins, monasteries, churches, and castles is made easy, and there is special coverage of the Karpas Peninsula, renowned for its turtle population and often referred to as the nature reserve of Cyprus. A multitude of suggestions on excursions are offered: from visiting Lefkosa--the divided city--to the fairy-tale St. Hilarion Castle (said to have been Walt Disney's inspiration for the palace in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs).

    Features include:
    >Expanded listings for specialist operators and updates on the complete range of restaurants, hotels, transport links, and activities
    >Exploring Girne harbor--one of the most picturesque in the Mediterranean
    >An update on the political situation on the island
    >Emphasis on sustainable, low-impact, and eco-tourist options

The author does a good job talking about the culture of the island and gives the basics for anyone that wants to pay a visit to this beautiful island. It is not in great detail but for a pocket book and for its prize has a great deal of information.

        1 out of 5 stars Yawn.......2006-06-08

I expected a "Lonely Planet" guide to help me explore off the beaten track, but I found this book too bland and long-winded to use. Some of the information is useful, but some is out of date. The "Eye Witness Top Ten Cyprus" suited me better to help me explore the beauty and appeal of Cyprus.

5 out of 5 stars First visit to Cyprus.......2005-09-13

Will leave this week for my first trip to Cyprus for a business and partial pleasure trip. The book had all the information I needed so far and found it very useful to plan my trip. It was set up in a logical and easy to understand manner and I will take it with me for reference. It even had some basic language phrases and local customs that might come in useful. After the trip, I could then judge better if it was accurate. At this time I assume it is because it is of a recent printing.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me.......2002-12-17

Lonely PLanet makes fine books but this is NOT one of them. I have toured the island several times and apparently the author and I have not been to the same places. Or rather the writer merely went as far as the nearest tourist office and copied the local brochures. I found his descriptions of all of the historical sites inaccurate -- museums the size of 10 x 10 room are described as "large" and worth half a day; sites are described as "near the village" when they are right in the middle -- hence the author was never there. The language glossary doesn't even include "Please, Thank You or Excuse Me."

5 out of 5 stars Very good, but hardly the "only" guide to Cyrpus.......2001-03-10

This is an excellent guide book to the island. However, contrary to the previous reviewer's comments there are many other guide books to Cyprus, some of them quite fine - and Amazon sells them too. The Rough Guide is also excellent.

        5 out of 5 stars English-speaking Tourist to Cyprus.......2000-11-05

You can't go to Cyprus without the Lonely Planet Cyprus (Travel Survival Kit) by Paul Hellander. It is literally the only travel book in English on this part of the world! Though part of the ancient world and visited by such luminaries as the Apostle Paul, almost nothing is written today in the guidebook area except this! Used books? None. New books? Try to find them. About all you can find are political analyses of Cyprus and its recent past. While many books exist on the Carribean, few exist on the Mediterranean! There are books on the Greek Isles, but not Cyprus. Thank you Lonely Planet for this guide book. It is like gold for the tourist to Cyprus!

This book was very suspensful.Peter is a teenager with ADD who's stepfather doesn't like him. Buck, his stepfather, thinks that he hates his half brother whom Peter really loves. I reccomend this book to any teenager who wants a good book that they can relate to. Peter is trapped like many teenagers. Though most teenagers are metaphorically trapped the author gives his readers a good real life, though somewhat more drastic then most of us will face, look at the every day life of a struggling teen waiting to discover who he really is. Peter, in the end, finds out who he is and who his friends and family really are with the help of a disillousioned poet, a girl with an eating disorder, and a overly friendly gaurd who is trying to right his wrongs. I am sure that if you pick up this book that the suspense will keep it in your hands until you've found every juicy detail(just like in the tabloids).

The book, Framed In Fire is a really good book. It's the only book I have read completely in over 3 years. There is a kid named Peter who is another ordinary boy. He gets accused for pushing his brother Linclon down the stairs of their house, so his parents sent him to a place called Restheaven, which is a place for juvenile delinquents. There he meets Cat who is the nurse, Edward aka Scorpio is one of the guards. He also meets Eugene who is a poetry lover all he ever does is rsite poetry on paper and out aloud, he also meets an anorexic girl named Sarah who also smokes. Peter One day when Peter was opening a book that he got for his B-day he read what his mom had wrote. He noticed some more writing and pulled back the label and his dad wrote in the book to. But he was told his dad had died before he was 2.So he escape from Restheaven and goes and searches for his dad with help from Edward, Sarah helps them out along the way to to try to find his dad. I wont tell u anything else I will let u find out yourself. I recommend this book for a teenager or someone who needs a good read.

The book, "Framed in Fire" was a great book. Peter, a teenage boy with ADD, is trapped in a mental hospital, but he wants to escape. The book is about his adventures trying to escape from the hospital. While he is at the hospital, he meets people with problems like his, and problems much different than his. I enjoyed this book because it was well written, and the author wove everything together well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to read it. I would mostly recommend it to kids who actually have ADD. Enjoy reading!
