The Best of St. Thomas and St. John,U.S. Virgin Islands.......2007-08-23
The book was some what informative. The price of taxis in the islands is very high.Coral world was not what I thought it would be as in the book. There was nothing there.I don't know when the author was in the Virgin Islands last, but there are things I would not recomend.Like shopping for jewlery and other things were very expensive. We were in the Islands from 7/29/07 to 8/05/07. We were told this was their off season maybe this is why things cost more. Overal the book did give some usefull tips.Ann Morris
so so.......2007-07-20
The information is good, and seems thorough, but the presentation is lacking...not a single photo, and the maps look juvenile.
This Book.......2007-01-12
This book is wonderful... Helps you plan your trip... So glad I found it!
So, bad I returned it!.......2005-08-23
I hate books that refer to objects but neglect to include a photograph. It's 2005, I need visuals.
Very Good Research.......2005-07-20
I thought the author did their work reviewing the places visited and knows the island well. Should never overlook the little places to visit and dine at , you can always find a hidden treasure somewhere! Good reading and very helpful book.

Irreverent guide is GREAT.......2005-09-23
After reading all the books I could find on the Virgin Islands,I have to say that I enjoyed this one the best. It gave me the information that I really wanted. My only regret is that there is not a more current edition. But that said, if you are planning a trip to the Virgin Islands this book is a must have!!!
Definitely one to read!.......2000-06-21
My husband and I are moving to the U.S. Virgin Islands and could not find any books that were not geared towards all of the tourist traps and tourist sights. This guide gives you everything you need to know as a tourist and then everything else you would like to know that travel books never seem to have. This book not only tells you the great stuff but it also tells you the not so great stuff. My husband even read this book! Very insightful and very helpful.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-04-11
I had a hard time finding a complete dive book for St.Croix--most of them focus on the other U.S. Virgin Islands. This is a complete map of all of the dive sites and on land ammenities.
Five Sea Stars.......2006-07-26
Thoroughly researched and thoughtfully constructed, this book offers something for everyone interested in exploring the amazing underwater landscapes of the USVI. Beginning divers and snorkelers will appreciate the overview of practicalities about how to get there, various underwater options, and other things to do when your extremities start to get pruney from all that time in the water.
More expert divers and those already familiar with the area can flip right to the heart of the book and delve into the descriptions of the many dive/snorkel sites. On our recent trip we stuck entirely with St. John, and I heartily agree with the author's assessment that Leinster Bay is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. We can't wait to go back.
My only recommendation for the 2nd edition of the book would be to include even more sites accessible from shore for those spur-of-the-moment snorkeling expeditions.
We will definitely be bringing this book along on our next trip to the USVI!
Grateful author responds ..........2005-08-30
Thanks to those of you who have already purchased a copy of Diving & Snorkeling U.S. Virgin Islands! I'm glad most of you are pleased with the book, and I truly appreciate your feedback. Your suggestions will help me improve the next edition of the book. Keep your comments coming!
Shark Man, I am sorry the book didn't meet your expectations, but I would like to clarify something about coverage given to snorkeling sites.
While the snorkeling sidebar does list just names of popular snorkeling sites (favorites of mine and many other Virgin Islanders), the 53 extended dive site descriptions include several that are also excellent snorkeling sites. These are listed in the book index under "Snorkeling Sites" and identified with a snorkeling icon in the site descriptions.
As you were on a snorkeling trip, I'll take your criticism of my dive site descriptions with a grain of sea salt. =8D
Best!

NOT for SNORKELING !!!!!.......2005-07-27
I bought this book for our snorkeling trip to the US Virgin Islands and I was extremely disappointed with it. The snorkeling information in this book consists of a list of 11 of the "top snorkeling spots" that are the same common sites you see in any travel book or website.....it doesn't even describe them or give you any information on them. The dive site info consists of short descriptions of 53 sites in the USVI, which I would rate at fair to good (for diving). About a third of the book is about things like history, shopping, airlines, etc., which are much better covered by any travel guide. If you're looking for a snorkeling guide don't waste your money on this book.
great companion.......2005-07-10
We used this book a ton on our recent trip to the USVI. We were just snorkeling, and found the tips, sealife info and site information that helped us immensely. We fell in love with the VI and are looking forward to exploring more next summer. We just puchased the same book for the BVI and can't wait to go snorkeling next summer there!
This book has great photos and information - I'm so glad I brought it with us on our trip.
Book Description
In 1796, the Jews of St. Thomas founded the first Jewish congregation on this Caribbean island. By 1803, new arrivals from England, France, and the neighboring islands of St. Eustatius and Curacao increased the original number from a handful of congregants to twenty-two families. Their small synagogue was destroyed by fires and rebuilt several times. The congregation numbered sixty-four families by the time the present synagogue was erected in 1833. It has since become the oldest synagogue in continuous use under the American flag. The congregation was also among the first to receive copies of the new West London Reform liturgy when it came out in 1841 and the first in this hemisphere to hold a Jewish confirmation ceremony two years later. In addition, the St. Thomas Synagogue has produced its own unique religious literature relating to hurricanes!
While the synagogue has served for over 200 years as a central religious and social gathering place, St. Thomas's Jews have been highly mobile members of a progressive, cosmopolitan society that at times rivalled any in the world. As an accepted part of the larger community, members were accomplished, model citizens in a highly tolerant Danish colonial society. Jews took positions in government, served as auctioneers, participated in the local Masonic lodges, and represented other countries as consuls in St. Thomas--many had non-Jewish business partners.
As traders in a mercantile culture, the Jews contributed to one of the world's busiest harbors and were crucial to St. Thomas's nineteenth-century rise to prominence in the northern Caribbean. St. Thomas businesses owned by Jews gained international stature, maintaining offices in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. And the size of their community, which seems so small today, was comparable to Jewish communities emerging in continental America well into the nineteenth century. At times, Jews comprised over twenty percent of the island's white inhabitants.
In Through the Sands of Time, Judah M. Cohen offers a beautifully researched historical portrait of this unusual and tenacious group of Jews. Beset with frequent fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, epidemics, economic depressions, and political upheavals, the Jews of St. Thomas have survived into the twenty-first century, with their synagogue continuing to host to a Jewish religious service every week.

Book Description
Street’s Guides are the result of his forty-four years of Caribbean experience— his first guide to the Virgin Islands (1964) has been expanded over the years to cover the entire eastern Caribbean. These guides give the mariner all the information needed to safely cruise the area, not only piloting information but also interesting background information on people, places and history.
“In the beginning was the word and the word came from Street. Since 1964 all other guide authors have followed in Street’s and Iolaire’s wake, avoiding the rocks and shoals Street and Iolaire discovered.”

Customer Reviews:
Excellent writing, unrealistic resolution.......2007-07-09
As a fan of another of Oates young adult books, Big Mouth and Ugly Girl, I had high expectations for this one. The writing is superb, after all it is Joyce Carol Oates and the woman can write. I was somewhat disappointed in the plot. Essentially the book seems to me to be a meditation on what might have happened in the O.J. Simpson case. As far as that goes, it is a deep and textured reflection. It seemed to me the whole story was rather neatly wrapped up in the end, unlike in real life where there are still so many unanswered questions. Perhaps in young adult you can't leave things just hanging and all has to be neatly resolved. I think a young adult reader might be more satisfied with the conclusion and not as engaged by the psychologial journey to get there.
it's freakylicious!.......2006-11-22
"You have Freaky Green Eyes!" -Cameron
15 year old Francesca Pierson (Franky) sneaks out to a college party. When she gets there, she realizes that she is probably the youngest one there. She meets this college boy named Cameron. He leads her to a room and starts to make a moved on her. She kicks him in the target. "You have Freaky Green Eyes!" he yells at her and she runs away, proud of herself. That's how she got her nickname, Freaky. This book is filled with suspense and questions that will leave you hanging.

Freaky Green Eyes by Joyce Carol Oates.......2006-11-15
Freaky Green Eyes is the story of 15 year old Francesca Pierson, known as Franky by almost everybody she knows, but to herself she is known as Freaky Green Eyes. Freaky Green Eyes, Freaky for short is Franky's alter ego, a strong willed and tough teen, who can get Franky out of almost any difficult situation that erupts. Freaky knows the truth, yet she pretends not to know as Franky: she knows there is trouble in the family- her father has a bad temper that makes him abusive and controlling and no longer gets along with her mother. Freaky knows that her family is becoming dysfunctional with mom and dad living under one roof; she also knows that knowledge is power but as Franky, she doesn't want to believe what is happening to her family. Franky's mom moves to a cabin in Skagit Harbor, and when things could not get any worse, her mom suddenly disappears and her father is suspected. Franky then realizes she needs to be Freaky all the time if she wants to save herself and her little sister Samantha, after all Freaky is who Franky really is on the inside.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-17
Prolific author Joyce Carol Oates delivers yet again with FREAKY GREEN EYES. With a plot that gradually unfolds to expose a family's destructive private life, this book covers a topic touched upon by many but seldom handled so artfully.
As in her previous novels, such as We Were the Mulvaneys (Oprah's Book Club), Oates unveils a family that is picture-perfect to the world at large but dysfunctional and horrific behind closed doors.
The narrator -- Franky -- unveils the true nature of her father slowly, shocking the reader by the level of her own denial, but is blunt with her criticism towards her mother, whom she views as weak and unloving for moving away. The reader will want to love Reid, the broadcaster and former football star, as the world does, but something is not "right" about how ordered he keeps his family. When their mother leaves, Franky and her younger sister Samantha have no buffer in their lives and begin to see their dad's true nature.
The strength of FREAKY GREEN EYES is Oates' narrator and manner of narration. Descriptions are scant and to the point, dialogue is crisp and revealing, and her use of foreknowledge keeps the reader feeling "edgy" until the climax. The reader sees Franky's world through the flawed understanding of a co-dependent child in an abusive home. Children in this type of environment react to the truth as they see it, not as it necessarily really is, and often quite illogically. In this regard, Joyce's "voice" for Franky is quite realistic. A girl her age would not be able to handle things any better than she does in this novel.
But Franky's strengths are as realistic as her shortcomings. Her growth as a character begins in the first chapter and continues to the story's conclusion. "Freaky Green Eyes" is the willful, strong side of her personality, first unveiled while fending off a rapist, a side she relies heavily upon as she begins to doubt her father's version of events regarding her mother's eventual disappearance. The realism of Franky's flaws and strengths gives her story strong appeal.
This is a masterful young adult novel about the sensitive subject of domestic violence. Readers will empathize with children growing up in such an environment after reading it. Highly recommended. Five stars.
