As Western lavishness collided with striking native elements in the vast reaches of the East African savanna, the Safari style was born. Blending ethnic African with colonial European, the look emphasizes relaxed yet luxurious living, drawing on an elemental approach to texture, color, and pattern, and on indigenous materials and design. Exploring 21 spectacular homes in glorious color, Safari Style takes us on an expedition through a fantastic Moorish residence in Kenya, a hotel in Zanzibar masquerading as a Persian palace, an Italianate villa on a former coffee plantation in Nairobi, a tree house hideaway perched in the Ngong hills, and a host of other extraordinary dwellings. Though most of us will never live anywhere so unique, we can certainly find countless great ideas here to incorporate into our own more humble abodes. This is about a lot more than a few animal-print pillows and some swags of mosquito netting; it's about Old World elegance and evocations of the pleasures of exotic travel, even if we only get to enjoy it from the comforts of a cushy mudcloth-covered armchair. --Amy Handy

Book Description

Renowned photographer Jon Ortner spent ten years documenting New York City in its best light, those moments before sunrise and at sunset when the city emanates a radiant beauty. In this lavishly produced volume, he presents 200 full-color photographs of the city's neighborhoods and landmarks, including breathtaking views of its skyline, from the George Washington Bridge and the Statue of Liberty to Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building. Perhaps most moving of all are the portraits of the World Trade Center Towers, a tragic loss to the city preserved here in the muted colors of twilight. Captions reveal little-known facts about Manhattan and two glorious foldout images present panoramic views.

5 out of 5 stars what decor style you see.......2007-07-25

The majority of interior photos do show interiors you would find in that area of the world, and they're well-done. I bought this book because of a description stating that it had a lot of "British Colonial" style, and although it has a lot of very plain furtniture and a lot of mosquitoe netting, it does not have the neutral walls and heavy wooden furniture of British Colonial. It definitely does NOT have British Colonial India style, which is regular BColonial w/ splashes of decor found in India.

4 out of 5 stars As useful a memory guide as a hunting trophy.......2003-11-09

One should not get the idea that the "camps" depicted in SAFARI STYLE have anything to do with the experience of safari. I have stayed in both tent and cabin camps and they were comfortable. They were not, emphatically NOT, anything like these. However, after safari is only a memory and an anticipation, a room decorated with ideas put forth in this volume will help soothe the longing until you can really go back. Whether your goal is to compile your memories in photos, watercolors, or traditional heads and horns a "trophy" room decked out in Safari Style will end up being the most satisfying in the home.

5 out of 5 stars Romanitc, exotic living found here, but not for the timid!.......2001-08-03

Safari Style is the quintessential insiders design source for creating African interiors. At over 200 pages, literally every other page has a full page color photo on it! While this book is a feast of exotic interiors, exteriors are featured too, they include a wide array of domiciles: rugged tents to palaces to tree houses, and game camps to very exclusive lodges. In fact, at the back of the book, the author has generously offered up a ýSafari Guide,ý complete with addresses and phone numbers of many of the books featured sites, for those of you inspired to go to these places!

Designers will appreciate the clear arrangement and large scope of design possibilities. You will see everything from salvaged heavy teak wood platform beds with misquote netting, baskets and carved masks in very rustic bedroom settings, to contemporary eclectic dining rooms with ever so slight touches of favorite and hard to find African objects strewn within more modern houses. Part of what makes this such a fantastic book is that the ýlooký you wish you could achieve in your own home are possible; Classical, Stylish, Simple, Eclectic, Exotic, Masculine or Feminine, Rustic, etc. For example - a photo of a patio with a raw timber pergola covered with fucia bougainvillea and a casual wood four person dining area replete with plants, chaise lounge and ethnic lanterns could easily fit into a Southwestern home. Another example of the diversity of style in the ideas found in this book is the Modern Romantic open loft room. Here is where a tanned leather couches gently separate the space between the living and dining areas. Additionally, the Modern Romantic has silver columns with only a little mudcloth wrapped around the bottom, raw wood tables and lighting treatments, bamboo blinds and a large abstract oil on canvas taking up an entire wall in the dining area. This second example could be found in a Manhattan apartment or a swank L.A. house with only subtle nuances to a mixed African style.

A plethora of native craft objects such as, paintings, carvings, textiles, spears, shields, shells, bowls, and pottery, which make their appearance throughout. I would also like to site that more architectural elements like treatments for roofs, ceilings, walls and floors, balconies, chimneys, sinks and showers, windows, doors, corridors and more are all part of what makes these places so enticing. Natural elements are key ý stone and wood, rough woven textiles, baskets, mats, and so on. If you like more eco-friendly living (such as the books Earth to Spirit, or the New Natural House Book both by David Pearson), you must at least look at this Safari Style for reference material. Indian, Asian and Coastal / subtropical blends on the African tradition are perfectly woven into the concept of creating foreign spaces yet comfortably beautiful living arrangements.

Indeed this book makes no argument that it borrows from the land and native cultures. Black and white photos from the 1920ýs accompany historical text exploring the British colonization of south and eastern regions of Africa. Very fortunately, I counted less than ten photos, which depict hunting trophies, animal skins or taxidermy, which I had previously associated with a safari style. I find this refreshing! Donýt be mistaken that Tin Beddowýs book departs from more than an exploration of sites into adventures. Not a single image shown within depicts humans, native or non-native, beyond the introduction. Safari Style does not whatsoever portray, with even the remotest sense of accuracy, how any native African peoples live, their homes or villages. Then again, this subject is hardly broached.

It is easy to promote this book to the both the novice interior designers and design student, professional interior design firms, architects and possibly contractors, the curious eclectic artist, hermits and meditative spirits, romantics and in general, to travel lifestyle enthusiasts. (Stay away Ralph Laurent platinum card waving wannabes and homogenized Martha Stewart rip-off artists, or youýll ruin a good thing.)

4 out of 5 stars Luxurious lives of the expats.......2001-01-08

One side of me recognizes that the younger sons of the Empire without great resources "went out" to Africa where they could live like princes on comparatively little [comparative only for Europeans, of course]. The other side wishes I had enough decadence in me to have lived in Happy Valley. There is no pretense that this is anything other than splendid housing for Europeans, not native Africans, and it is honest about malaria and the like, without mentioning politics. Nonetheless, I am happy to put this on my shelf with more technical works on indigenous African architecture. The work offers splendid structures built of simple materials on simple plans in which I could happily end my days relishing the elegant detail. The rich melange of styles effectively denies any dim notion of East African cultural isolation. Here Arab, Persian and Indian met and married native genius, and biologists know the offspring of heterosis are often ravishing.

5 out of 5 stars Awonderful book to emulate or sojourn........2000-07-08

If you loved the interiors depicted in such films as Out of Africa, Queenie, and The English Patient, you'll adore the interior design of Safari Style. Twenty-one interiors are beautifully captured in all their romantic splendor. White walls act as backdrops to the teracotta floors, bamboo or mahogany, red or deep blue cushions, solo hats for the sun, mosquito nets over beds, and panoramic views from windows. The vicarious visitor is welcomed to homes in Mozambique, Kenya, and nineteen other locations. Floors are usually tile with occasional oriental or persian rugs. The views run the gamut of near primitive to exotic Moroccan. If the reader enjoys these details for their home, there are shops that carry pottery, masks, mosquitto netting, solos, bamboo furniture to incorporate into a safari style. Designer Tricia Foley also has a book that inspires this approach to decorating as well. It is British Colonial Style.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Source Book at a Great Price.......2005-01-02

Since the Tanzanian photographic safari of which I was a part over 20 years ago, I have come to love the Safari style -- rustic yet luxurious, simple yet refined, open to the elements yet comfortable, accessible to wildlife yet cloistered and secure. I love the use of natural elements in interior and exterior design. This style makes the transition between indoors and outdoors seamless. This book is rich with evocative images, many of which one can use to inform his or her own interior and exterior design. Or just read the book to be transported to a simpler, more exotic world. It is a great value at the relatively inexpensive price.

5 out of 5 stars Just Love It!.......2006-04-07

My kids will play with this for one or more hours if given the chance! It is all directive and creative play that doesn't involve television. They love the finger puppets and going into their imaginary worlds with the narration on the CD. We have both the Under the Sea and the Jungle set, and I highly recommend these, especially for kids who need to learn to follow directions, but also want to express themselves in their own way. My oldest daughter certainly fits this bill, and she has gotten much better at following directions while she has fun.

        Book Description

This stunning pictorial takes us inside some of the most beautiful lodges, houses, and camps in the African savanna.

For decades, the East African savanna has attracted Europeans eager to experience life with nature at its largest—on safari. Drawing on their experience of the safari, these visitors have created a relaxed yet elegant style of living, which is distinctly displayed in the architecture and interiors of the homes, lodges, and camps they have established across the vast eastern reaches of the continent. Safari Living captures this alluring style of interior design, with its elemental approach to texture and color, its borrowing of native African patterns and architecture, and its vital interaction with nature. Photographer Tim Beddow is a regular contributor to publications that include THE WORLD OF INTERIORS and ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST.

        Book Description

One of the most breathtaking realms of the world becomes an inspiration for design in this visual survey of the many bold styles of the African safari camp. The seduction of mossquito netting undulating in the wind; the romance of rich Oriental rugs on a lush savanna; the clasic civility of silver antiques; and the romance of a wardrobe trunk packed with lace are some of the defining elements of safari style. Among the many locations that appear for the first time in pring are Hemingway's "Casa Matata", the traditional Finch-Hatton camp of luxury and romance and Africa's most exclusive camps: Abu's Elehant Back Safari Camp in Botswana and the 1920's Cottar Camp in Kenya.

Besides being a dream album for travelers, interior design photographs present creative solutions for the home that can be achieved with domestic mercnadise and ethnic crafts no matter how far you live from the majestic plains of Africa. Radiant photographs so powerfully evoke this continent that one can alomost hear the grass russeling and feel the heat of the amber sun.

African bush style goes modern in homes which profile decorating choices achieved through ethnic crafts and fabrics. The color photos are lavish and display many options and styles.

5 out of 5 stars Safari Chic is Chic.......2000-12-21

Bibi Jordan has managed to capture the true spirit of adventure in her new book Safari Chic. Not only do the wild exteriors and the mannered interiors inspire one to redecorate their physical surroundings but they resonate with the kindling spirit of rejuvenation and imagination. This is a traveler's delight as well. More books Bibi, more!

5 out of 5 stars Africaýall around us.......2000-12-21

Upon first glance, Bibi Jordan's "Safari Chic" looks like a handsome, pretty-picture, coffee table, book that is ... just that; it looks good on an Ottoman in one's living room. Only, I have those types of books and was not prepared to buy another, hence my hesitation. But Africa is much more than an interest for me and so naturally I began to thumb through and shortly afterwards, lose myself in it.

The preface by Peter Beard - Mr. Africa himself - sets the tone for the unfolding of a modern day journey. Miss Jordan's safari takes us to those breathtaking sceneries where man is as much a part of nature as the elephants, hippo and lion. In doing so, she introduces us to the men and women who live in "the bush". These characters, some of whose families have been safari outfitters in Africa for 90 years, make up the real fabric of what Africa is about. In telling their story, we learn that safari is a way of life. Each camp has its own unique history. By understanding these people and how they live in harmony with their fellow Africans and wildlife, we are able to grasp the complete picture.

Miss Jordan weaves these fascinating personalities together into a wonderful narrative. Inspirational quotes from Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, and others, and - yes, great pictures, make for an enticing read.

This book makes Africa real and for me, timeless. It makes you want to go there, and bring a piece of it back with you. The last chapter offers some excellent and affordable tips to decorating `safari chic'. Popular stores like Pier One and The Pottery Barn can bring Africa to your fingertips.

As mentioned, many other African safari books are dictated by form and fashion above substance. "Safari Chic" is more than a decorating style; it's a frame of mind. From all of the famous quotes Miss Jordan uses, this one perhaps, sums it up best.

"All things considered, there are two kinds of people in the world: Those who stay at home and those who do not. The second are most interesting."

            The bestselling sequel to ttyl

Told entirely in instant messages, this sequel to the hugely popular ttyl follows Maddie, Zoe, and Angela through the new flirtations, fixations, and frustrations of eleventh grade.

Angela has just found out that her family is moving to El Cerrito, California, and she seriously doesn't know how she'll survive without her best friends. Maddie makes some really bad moves with Clive, a pot-smoking hipster who wants to be “friends with benefits.” And Zoe finds herself falling for Doug, the sweet poet who has had a crush on Angela forever—a crush that Angela has come to count on.

The paperback is timed to release a month before the latest installment in the series, l8r, g8r. Together, the three books about the winsome threesome are a funny, touching chronicle of the rocky road of real friendship—bumpy, nutty, and marshmallow-sweet.

            1 out of 5 stars Not redeeming.......2007-09-25

Just because some kids do drugs, swear, and have sex does not mean we need to glorify those for all kids. Didn't find anything redeeming enough in the book to pass it on to any teens. It went in the recycling. Hopefully it will do more good made into something else.

I don't like giving a bad review - but felt inclined to in this case.

            1 out of 5 stars Trash.......2007-09-19

I bought this book for my daughter only after asking the salesgirl in the store if it was appropriate for a 12 year old, I was assured it was. Last night my daughter came up to me and asked what a bl*wjob was. Apparently this is discussed in the book. Needless to say she will NOT be reading anymore books by this author or in this series

1 out of 5 stars Trash for young minds.......2007-06-12

They author have figured out that sex sells, especially to young teen girls. She concocts this IM narrative to capitalize on the trendiness of this mode of communication. The first book was dedicated to "the beer boys". uh, her intended audience is 12-16 year old girls. Hmm, I wonder if this is dedicated to "Rufus, her favorite drug dealer." or "The Ecstacy girls". I know these are real issues not to be avoided but to be brought out into the open. But glamorizing drug use, teen sex etc, is just irresponsible and exploitative. But I am surprised that she hasnt gotten sponsors like Trojan, Budweiser, and the like to boost profits.

5 out of 5 stars TTFN, a book just for girls who like boy conflicts, and Action!.......2007-06-01

TTYL is a book about three girls, Angela, Maddie and Zoe talking with each other by instant messages. They are in high school and are best friends. There is a huge conflict with Angela; she is moving. Is that going to ruin their friendship? Then Maddie gets in trouble and is grounded. Then Zoe gets in trouble and grounded and the only one is Angela who has nothing to do because she moved and thinks she has no friends or life anymore! I thought the book was very good! I read it over a weekend and a break! I started reading it at night and I almost finished it because it was such a page turner! You can't put it down! I'm so glad I convinced my mom to buy both books, TTYL and TTFN. Now I see that there is and sequel to both of them called l8r, g8r. If you like books about boys, girl fighting and ACTION, then this is the book for you! It is not boring at all! I loved both books!

"I could not live without you" this quote shows one of the many great things about the moral in this book. This book shows true friendship and that their can be bumpy times along the endless road of friendship. This book can help many teenage girls to relax and to understand that being friends with someone is not supposed to be easy. There are good times and bad times but it is the bad times that get you to each good time. This book at times seemed to be a tad bit boring because it is all conversations on line. When something happens you don't find out until after it happens.
This book constantly kept me interested. There was always some problem that was going on that made the book run smooth. This book was an easy book to read because there were not any sophisticated words, but you will have trouble if you do not know AIM talk. For me it was hard to completely connect with any of the characters because they were all older and had different lives then I do. But if I were as old as they were I think I would be more like Zoe, we both have a problem loosening up and just letting things happen. And we are too afraid of what may happen to just live life to the fullest. This book is full of things to learn, but the one thing that I learned was that no matter how far apart you are friends are friends. That no matter if you fight or disagree that your friends will always be there, and that they are your family. For me fiction is always my favorite genre. I love it because what may happen is only limited by the author's imagination. There were constantly surprises in the story that held my interest, like when madie gets caught with pot. I knew that she was using it but I never suspected that she would have gotten caught by the police. I would not advise any boys to read this or any one who does not appreciate the true meaning of friendship. This author has particularly struck my attention and I would like nothing more than to read another book from her.

            Book Description

A special two-book set exclusively available to Amazon.com customers: Lauren Myracle's bestselling novels told in instant messaging, ttfn and ttyl.

The runaway bestseller now in paperback! The first novel told entirely in instant messages!

Lauren Myracle follows the friendship of three fifteen-year-old girls-Angela (SnowAngel), Maddie (mad maddie), and Zoe (zoegirl)-through the roller coaster ride of tenth grade, with its boy temptation, donut runs, driving lessons, math torture, and queen bee encounters. The winsome threesome handles it all...then life suddenly jumps the tracks. A jerky boy sends peppy Angela into the dumps. Tough Maddie makes a mistake that has the whole school talking. And good girl Zoe ends up in over her head with a flirty teacher. Just when they need one another most, their friendship seems ready to fall apart.

The distinctive voices of the three girls, as captured in their IMs, give this novel authenticity and heart. It's an epistolary novel for the twenty-first century, from the keyboard of an author whose work has been called "enchanting...uplifting" (VOYA), "unusually candid" (Publishers Weekly), and "insightful" (The Denver Post).

Sequel to the New York Times best-seller ttyl.

This sequel to the breakout bestseller, ttyl (a novel told entirely in instant messages), follows Maddie, Zoe, and Angela through their next year in high school, 11th grade. There's trouble and lots of IMs ahead for the Winsome Threesome.

Angela has just found out that her family is moving to El Cerrito, California, and she seriously doesn't know how she'll survive without her best friends. Maddie makes some really bad moves with Clive, a pot-smoking hipster who wants to be "friends with benefits." And Zoe finds herself falling for Doug, the sweet poet who has had a crush on Angela forever, a crush that Angela has come to count on.

Lauren Myracle has concocted another funny, touching look at the rocky road of real friendship--bumpy, nutty, and marshmallow-sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Books, Great Price!.......2007-01-18

My daughter fell in love with these books at a local bookstore. They are the perfect "teen" reading. When I checked Amazon, I found them to be in a bundle pack at a very good bargain price. One was paperback, the other hardback, so the price was better than anything a local bookseller could offer, even with a coupon.

These books were received in brand new condition and I paid less than the price of buying in a bookstore, including shipping.
