Book Description
This thorough, handy, and affordable guide to the 75-mile-long chain of islands that stretches from St. Vincent to Grenada is geared toward the savvy and sophisticated traveler. Highlighted are what to see and discover at this remote end of the West Indies. Covered are the relatively undiscovered destination of St. Vincent; the majestic Grenada (the Spice Isle), and the Grenadine islands—Bequia, Mustique, Mayreau, Canouan, the Tobago Cays, Union, Palm, Petit St. Vincent, Petit Martinique, and Carriacou.
Book Description
The Caribbean ranks among the earliest and most completely globalized regions in the world. From the first moment Europeans set foot on the islands to the present, products, people, and ideas have made their way back and forth between the region and other parts of the globe with unequal but inexorable force. An inventory of some of these unprecedented multidirectional exchanges, this volume provides a measure of, as well as a model for, new scholarship on globalization in the region.
Ten essays by leading scholars in the field of Caribbean studies identify and illuminate important social and cultural aspects of the region as it seeks to maintain its own identity against the unrelenting pressures of globalization. These essays examine cultural phenomena in their creolized forms--from sports and religion to music and drink--as well as the Caribbean manifestations of more universal trends--from racial inequality and feminist activism to indebtedness and economic uncertainty. Throughout, the volume points to the contending forces of homogeneity and differentiation that define globalization and highlights the growing agency of the Caribbean peoples in the modern world.
Book Description
Geared toward sophisticated and savvy travelers who generally avoid swarms of tourists, this extraordinary guidebook documents the real Caribbean vacation. Completely revised from its previous edition, it boasts improved maps and more easily navigable information on hotels, restaurants, bars, and beaches, going beyond the t-shirt stalls of Ochos Rios, the casinos in St. Maarten, the all-inclusive resorts of Jamaica, and the cruise ship traffic jams of St. Thomas. Such features as Rum & Reggae's Touristo Scale, Island Friendliness Climate, and the Superlatives section all maintain the creative flair that defines this opinionated, irreverent, funny, and—most of all—informative series.

Phenomenal.......2003-04-08
Never will you find this sort of quality in other travel guides. Mr. Runge's books have become my travel bibles!
Definitely Not More of the Same.......2001-01-11
The reader from Maracaibo's comments could not be further from my own experience at Playa El Agua. I absolutely loved the natives! Although correct in stating that is not the most beautiful beach,(which Runge does state in the book), I found that the fun-loving Venezuelans, mostly hipsters from Caracas, made it a blast. What a time I had partying, I felt like I knew these people from birth.
What I really love about Rum & Reggae is it's opinionated style. Runge is so edgy, so right on, so now, he tells it like it is while making the whole book entertaining and enlightening. I wish more travel books were written for people who avoid the predictable. For anyone looking for a Caribbean experience that defies ordinary, buy this book, it will take you on a trip you will never forget!
A Biased Travel Guide.......2000-12-13
Don't waste your money! The island descriptions are brief, highly subjective and inaccurate. As an example, the author lists Playa El Agua on Margarita Island, Venezuela as a choice for the Ten Best Beaches in the Caribbean. Anyone who has visited this beach will find a typical Venezuelan beach: trash everywhere and people looking for money (both legally and illegally) all along the beach. The author also advises that a good excursion from Margarita Island would be to visit Caracas, Venezuela: ranked as the 6th most dangerous place in the world!
The author seems to have a preconceived attitude toward many of the islands in his book and this is evident in the descriptions that he provides the reader. As an example the author has a "climates chart" which lists the friendliness of an island. Near the bottom of the list are the twin islands of Nevis and St. Kitts, home to some of the friendliest people you will ever meet.
This book is written in a manner that tries to set itself apart from the other Caribbean travel guides such as Fielding's and Fodor's. The biased tone of the book makes this guide stand out, that is for certain. But beware, this book can be misleading and possibly dangerous if the advice contained inside is followed by a would-be Caribbean traveler.
this book is in a class by itself.......2000-02-02
Well, Mr. Runge has finally come out with an encore to his classic book on the Caribbean, and he has outdone himself. He has once again given us all the best kept secret places in the Caribbean, and not a moment to soon. I was afraid he was down there permanently this time after a six year information drought between editions and it was killin' me!. So all I can ask now, is that he quickly pack up and give us more of the same quality for some other destinations such as Mexico, Hawaii, or perhaps a south Pacific island guide. I just hope he can maintain this extraordinary level of "insider's" scuttlebutt as he expands his travel territory. This is far and away the best book on what to do and where to go in the Caribbean that has ever been put together, and I believe I own all of them (over 50 Caribbean vacation guidebooks in my library, and I would throw them all out to keep this one). A masterpiece.
Bigger and better than ever!.......1999-10-28
At last! Mr. Runge has updated his Caribbean guide and it is better than ever. He includes more locations, more activities, more places to stay, and more ratings. His opinions are sharper, his descriptions are more detailed, his guidance is right on the money. This book is NOT for your average vacationer, this is for the sophisticated traveler who's looking for something out of the ordinary. Like YOU!

Useless Guide Written By An Arrogant Jerk.......2007-05-22
My wife and me are planning a trip to Puerto Plata in June so I purchased this book hoping to gain some useful information. What a disappointment! In fact, the author doesn't cover Puerto Plata (or Playa Dorado and the other nearby tourist areas) at all, saying only that the city was ugly and should be avoided by everyone. This will probably come as a bit of a suprise to the many people who enjoy vacationing there. It is, after all, the second most visited location in the country after Punta Cana.
The other problem is that the author comes across as an elitist snob of the worst kind. The book starts off with him whining about how tough it is to be a travel writer because he has to drive around to different cities and visit different hotels instead of being able to just lounge by the pool. But, of course, he does enjoy getting to brag about his travels later on at the fabulous cocktail parties he attends. He then goes on to complain about how corrupt and poverty stricken the Dominican Republic is, at one point referring to the country as a "banana republic." Hey, if you think so badly of the place then just go home instead of trying to make money by writing a travel guide. There are practically no recommendations for backpackers or others on a tight budget and he refers to all-inclusive hotels as "the bane of the Caribbean". Basically, he just discounts the vast majority of travellers as being too "low class" and instead focuses on the small number of luxury resorts he considers worthy of his "high class" tastes.
This guy is a joke and his lousy book isn't even worth the mere 6 cents (plus $3.99 shipping and handling) that I paid for it. Avoid!

Book Description
An in-depth guide to one of the Caribbean’s true jewels, the verdant and dynamic Jamaica, this book covers all the sites and attractions the savvy traveler is looking for. Included is information about everything from hotels, resorts, restaurants, the art scene, and activities to pick-up joints, nude beaches, and the infamous Miss Brown’s mushroom tea.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting perspective; too short.......2003-01-23
This should not be the ONLY guidebook to Jamaica you buy - Lonely Planet is my favorite for specific and comprehensive info on hotels, sights, eats.
But this one offers a truly unique perspective and is a highly entertaining (though short at 45 pages) read. The author hates all-inclusives, loves Negril and has an interesting rundown on golf courses and the fancier villa resorts of MoBay and Port Antonio....right alongside a review of the best mushroom tea houses in Negril.
The only areas he really goes into are those I mention, and Kingston, and only a few hotels and restaurants in each.
I wish it were a longer book, it was an interesting and amusing read.

Book Description
Maya Mukherjee doesn’t fit in. She was born in India and her parents moved to Canada when she was a baby. Now it’s the 1970s, and she’s a middle schooler in Manitoba, land of moose and snow. She wants to run on the tundra beneath the Northern Lights, make igloos or snow-angels, see John Travolta, and ride elephants through the Bengal jungle the way her great-grandfather did. Then her gorgeous cousin Pinky comes from India for a visit, bringing a statue of the god Ganesh, the Remover of Obstacles. Maya asks Ganesh to remove all obstacles to her dreams. Like most wishes, it backfires in hilarious and painful ways. Maya must journey across continents to restore the truth and find out who she is.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book !.......2006-07-09
I've been dying to read this book based on the reveiws.. When I saw it in the library, you can imagine that I grabbed it of the shelf ! Usually, I get too excited about books, and they turn out to be dissappointing.. But this was definetly worth it !! I love Maya's character and the whole plot that follows. I saw Ganesh in a new way, due to the way he talked to Maya and by his hungry actions, which was also very interesting ! Being Indian myself, I could relate to this book very well. This book was not only funny, but it gives a good lesson near the end.. This has to be my favorite book of all time !
A unique story with a dream-like quality .......2005-04-15
Wendy Lamb Books, 2005. Born in India and raised in Manitoba, Maya struggles to find her identity as the only brown-skinned kid in school. When her beautiful cousin, Pinky, arrives from India bearing a statue of the god Ganesh and proceeds to steal the boy Maya wants, Maya prays to Ganesh to remove all of her obstacles-with unintended consequences. A unique story with a dream-like quality that shows a young girl embracing her culture and learning about herself.
Great reading for all ages.......2005-03-22
I loved this book! I'm an adult, but even so I raced through this story. Maya is a wonderful, spunky character, who's warm, funny, and very real. I would follow her through a thousand more adventures. The writing is vivid and beautiful, full of metaphors and colorful descriptions. I'm looking forward to Anjali Banerjee's next book!
Something for everyone.......2005-02-26
A respected literary figure once proposed the question, "Why must all the good things belong to the past?" With her debut novel, Maya Running, author Anjali Banerjee places that somber notion squarely where it belongs - at the end of the emotional queue alongside disheartened, dispirited and despondent.
Although published by Wendy Lamb Books, an imprint of Random House created to appeal to children and young adults, Maya Running has a great deal to offer those of us not in Generation Y. Baby boomers (like me) and Gen Xers (like my grown children) can find pleasure and profit in this charming novel. Think The Color Purple by Alice Walker or The Bluest Eyes by Tony Morrison then add a touch of sweet and dash of late twentieth century savvy, and you get the story of Maya Mukherjee, a Canadian born girl of Indian descent searching for her identity.
From first page to last, I was enchanted with Ms. Banerjee's original and unique narrative voice, the delectable unification of teenage humor, hope, awe and envy. Her characters are clearly drawn and the relationships effectively established. When I read the book, Maya's challenges and successes strolled pleasantly beside me, unhurried and unforced, a testament to Ms. Banerjee's workmanlike pacing of story, plot and dialogue.
All good things do not have to belong to the past. Maya Running reminds old folks that no matter how packaged or marketed, there's still plenty of simple joy in the here and now. Remember the last time your rode in a limousine with the windows down?
