Not horrible, but get the island-specific version instead.......2006-08-08
This book was all right. The intro general-info pages are really detailed (info for traveling with kids, international visitors, senior travelers, transportation options, etc.). However, there are scant few photos -- just a couple of pages' worth stuck in the middle, and they're more landscape-oriented than tourism-oriented, so they really aren't relevant to a guidebook.
There's some good information in there, but if you know what island you're going to already, then get a book about that particular island; otherwise you have to wade through a bunch of stuff that isn't relevant to your trip. For instance, I found the Hidden Maui guidebook to be much more helpful for the trip we'll be taking.
Frequently generic, omits any mass transit information for Oahu.......2005-09-21
I recently checked out this book (among others) from the local library prior to a trip to Oahu. For my trip, I was disappointed by this book, and found this to be one of the less-useful ones.
First, this book was largely useless because the author omitted almost any information about accessing different tourist sites through Hawaii's tourist-packed mass transit system, The Bus. Most tourists I met relied on mass transit and tour buses. What good is a guidebook if you don't know how (or whether) you can get to the things the author mentions?
Secondly, the author frequently lacks discernment and context in his suggestions. For example, the Waikiki Shopping Plaza is listed as offering "about a dozen [budget] ethnic and American restaurants", without context. When I visited, I discovered the usual set of food court fry pits that could be found in any American shopping mall. Why would anyone interested in "Hidden Hawaii" be interested in these?
Needless to say, I rapidly tossed this book in my hotel room, and carried around the Rough Guide around. Thud.

Book Description
Forget Polynesian paralysis! This expanded, updated edition of Hidden Maui offers so many new opportunities for adventure that readers will jump out of those poolside lounges, grab their gear, and head out looking for excitement.
Noted Hawaii travel expert Ray Riegert shows the way to every inch of the Valley Isle's 120 miles of shoreline. He points out beaches where the sand is white, black, salt-and-pepper, green, even garnet. Then Hidden Maui plunges into the waves - describing the best way to enjoy the island's great watersports, from sea kayaking to whale watching. Land adventures are covered in just as much detail, including biking trips down Haleakala volcano, hikes through the bird-rich Kanaha Pond wildlife sanctuary and spelunking journeys through ancient volcanic caves and over frozen lava waterfalls near Hana.
Hidden Maui reveals unique lodging and dining options too, including the quaint wooden Nona Lani cottages and the old-style bamboo-deco Kihata restaurant, where local Paia residents enjoy budget-priced Japanese food. The author also devotes separate chapters to the lesser-known Maui County islands of Molokai and Lanai.
Customer Reviews:
OK book but not great.......2001-02-27
DO NOT use this book to find hotels or restaurants. It does have good beaches and things to do. As far as the hotels and restaurants it seems like they just took the promotion materials and re-printed them without actually trying the places for themselves.
Hidden Maui.......2000-07-26
I bought this book expecting to find areas and sites that were not included in other guide books. I have yet to find any such places in the book. The title is very misleading. I found the books descriptions to be very bland and somewhat incomplete. Mr. Riegert would do well to review the guidebooks of Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman before writing another book.
First time Maui vacationer.......2000-03-25
This is not the best book on Maui. Most of the information on "hidden" places is not as "hidden" as the book would lead you to believe. It is available elsewhere (Frommers, Fodors, Snorkel Maui.) This guide is not easy to use, and doesn't have the nice pictures other books have. We bought 5 books before we went to Maui, and we brought three with us. This was not one of them because we got all of the same information in the other books or on-line.
hidden maui leaves maui still hidden.......1999-10-19
I found this book almost worthless. The book pointed us to who we should pay to take us snorkeling or on hikes rather than let us know where to go. I also thought the book was poorly organized. I definitely would not recommend this book. I received more useful information off a free map of maui obtained from an information booth at the beach.
You must read this book if you are going to Maui........1998-10-13
This book is a must for the first time visitor to the island of Maui as well as those who return again and again to bask on her beautiful beaches and take in all the magnificent scenery. This book accompanied us on all our daily jaunts: the 10, 000 foot ascent to Haleakala Crater as well as a busy Saturday night checking out all the stores in Lahaina. Chapter 8's descriptions of various points of interest along the Hana Highway is invaluable as a guide to making the most of this winding, picturesque stretch of road. I found myself regularly referring to the dining and shopping choices listed for the various towns and found most of the descriptions very accurate. I have visited Maui several times before my most recent trip in September and I wish I had purchased this book a long time ago. If you buy only one guide to assist you in your travels on beautiful Maui, it should be this one.
Book Description
This all new fourth edition is the most comprehensive guidebook ever written for Maui. HawaiÂ'i resident and best-selling author, Andrew Doughty, actually hikes all the trails, rides the boats, scuba dives the reefs, dines in the restaurants, reviews all the resorts, snorkels the coastline, explores the hidden waterfalls and shares all the secrets that he finds. Everything is reviewed anonymously. This book and a rental car are all you need to discover what makes Maui so exciting.

A wonderful resource!.......2007-10-01
We visited Maui one month ago to spend time with my sister in law who lives out there (lucky girl!). We found this book to be invaluable and think it should be standard issue to everyone who visits the island. We had a couple of problems with it but on the whole it was worth the money :)
fantastic guides - the best I have read on Hawaii islands.......2007-09-24
Goes WAY beyond your average guide book. I lived in Hawaii for a year and felt like a local thanks to this book (and the series of books for the various Hawaiian islands). No need to carry several guide books to Hawaii - this is all you need. And the online information (which you receive by purchasing a book and getting a special password) gives you even more information on housing, restaurants, etc. and keeps the info in the book fresh and up to date. Cant recommend enough. Mahalo!
Very informative book.......2007-09-13
This book has a lot of very interesting information. It give descriptions of all of the places I am anxious to visit. It also allows you to go online and read the reviews on all of the lodging on Maui. I have used those reviews to find a place for us to stay. I can't wait to get to Maui to check it out.
Really nice, concise descriptions.......2007-08-31
I really felt I could trust this book, as, having been to Maui a few times, I could compare my feelings against the commentary included. They're right on 100% of the time. Great tips and direct reviews.
Excellent book and well worth purchasing.......2007-08-15
This guide book was perfect with one exception and that was a terrible kabob restaurant in Lahaina. Every other recommendation/write up was exact. We stayed at Prince Maui which was wonderful. The beach was crystal clear in the morning. We saw a couple of sea turtles and I saw an octopus while snorkeling. While we stayed in South Maui, we spent a lot of time in Lahaina. Where we stayed it was quiet and beautiful and my kids (18 & 14) loved it. For surfing, Goofy Foot Surfin School was EXCELLENT. My kids were up on the first time and the guys that work there were very nice and patient. I can not say enough good things about them. Good shopping in Lahaina. The Hana Highway was the most beautiful place I have seen and I wish we would have spent 2 days. All of the waterfalls were excellent. Pg 86 is re Waikani Falls--from where you park, you have to walk across the bridge. Like the book says, it is a tricky first step, but once you get past that, it is an easy hike to the waterfall and the pools below. All of the stops that the book recommends are worthwhile. We did see broken glass so be sure to take valuables with you. For the waterfall on Pg 80, after you pass the stream where you have to cross several large boulders, take the path to the left to get to the waterfalls. It is a bamboo forest and really cool. I think there was a drought so the waterfalls were kind of small but it was really neat. PuPu Lounge was excellent as well as Pita Paradise. We had the Brouchetta plate and I loved it. The blow hole on pg 56 is awesome. You can hike down to the base and it is worth it (I had flip-flops on and did not have too much trouble but you should wear "tenny-shoes" to be careful. We had a wonderful trip and the book helped so much.

Frommer's was much better!.......1999-09-21
We took our family and went to Maui. Armed with 3 guide books, I was able to compare the content and accuracy of them while on the island.
I found Frommer's book to be a little outdated. More to the point, I found it to be lacking a lot of information that the other two books had. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this book. Maybe their tour books for other islands are better...

Book Description
Brady loves life on the Chesapeake Bay with his friends J.T. and Digger. But developers and rich families are moving into the area, and while Brady befriends some of them, like the DiAngelos, his parents and friends are bitter about the changes. Tragedy strikes when the DiAngelos' kayak overturns in the bay, and Brady wonders if it was more than an accident. Soon, Brady discovers the terrible truth behind the kayak's sinking, and it will change the lives of those he loves forever. Priscilla Cummings deftly weaves a suspenseful tale of three teenagers caught in a wicked web of deception.
Customer Reviews:
Ok book, but language level is better for younger kids.......2007-05-30
This book was very good, a little dramatic and the language lacked hard words and use of words. I would overall recomand for kids 8-12.
Great Read Aloud.......2007-04-19
I just borrowed this book from my husband who teaches 6th grade, and I devoured it in one weekend. It is a good story that reminds me of 'On My Honor'. It deals with loyalty, death and friendships. The end was slightly predictable and I felt it was missing some resolution between the main charater and the mother he was working for.
I think this would be a great read aloud because it moves along quick and it has some good cliff hangers. It would also lead to some good discussion.
A Great Book.......2006-12-14
I'm not a big fan of reading, but this book just pulls you into to it. It starts as a breath taking beginning and an unpredictable ending. It's about a thirteen year old boy who was once a hero and then became a back stabber to his friends. Should he face the consequences? Should he keep the truth in him forever? If he does what will happen in his future? This coming of age story is a real page turner and you should read it.
So Many Questions.......2006-12-12
Listen," dad said "Carl called. Somebody's missing on the river, maybe out in the bay. He wants us to take the boats and help look."
I put my hand over my eyes. "Oh my God," I said.
Red kayak is a great book about a kid named Brady trying to decide what to do and how to move on after a water incident that resulted in someone dying.
The book starts off with the three main characters Brady J.T. and Digger waiting to get picked up by Carl (Brady's cousin) and taken to school. Brady is the main main character. He's a teenager his family isn't very rich and he crabs like his dad to get money. Digger is a sub main character. He's one of Brady's best friends at the start of the book. He has a bad dad unfortunately that beets his mother. Digger's grandfather used to own a lot of property that the three buddies hug out on. Recently he had to sell it for money to a new rich family called the DeAngelo's digger is very angry about this. J.T. is Brady's other best friend his family owns a chicken farm, J.T. is really good with computers.
While the three are waiting they see the red kayak of there new neighbor Mr. DeAngelo being paddled out of the creak into the river. Brady is concerned he knows the river well and it's a bad day to be out on the water. Brady tries to get his friends to yell a warning but they end up not. Digger was mad a Mr. DeAngelo for buying his grandfather's property and A few days ago the three were kicked off the property when found by the boat house this Made digger really mad J.T. goes with Digger so Brady decides not to call as well.
Everything goes relatively normal that day at school Brady is worried about the kayak but it seems it will be aright, until Spanish class. During Spanish Brady gets called to the principal's office and learns that in the kayak were not Mr. DeAngelo but his wife and son Ben, and they've gone missing. Brady and his dad are asked to search the river because they're watermen and know the river really well. Luckily they find both Ben and his mother who seem like they will both survive, Brady is very glad he baby sat for Ben and is kind of attached to the kid.
Unfortunately Ben ends up dying Brady blames himself wondering what might have happened if he had called out a warning. His friends start avoiding him after the incident and Brady's left trying to figure out what's going on with his friends, why ben died, and how to deal and move on from what happened.
Over the course of the book many twists in the plot happen and just when Brady thinks he's moving on a whole nother set of choices get thrown at him. This is one of those books that for some reason you can't put down and you stay up tell one reading I highly recommend you all read it.
a rainy day book by a kid.......2006-12-12
I think this book has it's ups and down's. I think this is a book that could be better written. The word choice in not the best and the story could be more detailed but the book also has it's good points like the plot. The plot is very strong and leaves you hanging at the end of some chapters (actually quite a few.) It is the thing that drives the book and make's you want to keep reading. The story is set in the present on Chesapeake Bay. The main character Brady is facing some rough challenges because his neighbor's kayak overturns in the bay. Brady is left wondering whether or not it was his fault. As a 7th grader I read this book for class and was asked to find good descriptive words and it was challenging to find words that I did not know. Still you have to give the book and it's author credit because it was a good read but not necessarily heavy reading material a good book for rainy days.

Book Description
When guerrilla soldiers strike Santiago's village, they destroy everything in their path -- including his home and family. Santiago and his four-year-old sister escape, running for their lives. But the only way they can be truly safe is to leave Guatemala behind forever. So Santiago and Angelina set sail in a sea kayak their Uncle Ramos built while dreaming of his own escape. Sailing through narrow channels guarded by soldiers, shark-infested waters, and days of painful heat and raging storms, Santiago and Angelina face an almost impossible voyage hundreds of miles across the open ocean, heading for the hope of a new life in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
Brendan's review.......2007-05-17
I liked the book because it has a lot to do with survival. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. One time they almost got caught by the military boats. If they had gotten caught, then the military would have killed them.
Santiago and Angelina have to take their uncle's cayuco, kayak made from a tree, to another island. Their island has been burned down so their uncle's friend helps them.
I would recommend this book to a survival reader that loves Ben Mikaelsen. However, I think that his other book was better, "Touching Spirit Bear".
Red Midnight.......2006-09-20
Red Midnight by Ben Mikaelsen is about a boy and his little sister who try to sail the ocean from Guatemala to Florida through storms and the burning sun. Santiago, who is twelve, and his little sister Angelina, who is four, sail the ocean by themselves in a small cayuco, or sea kayak, for more than 20 days. The story takes place in 1981 and is fiction but the military killing thousands of people in Central America during the 1980s is true and really happened.
Santiago's mom woke him up at night and she tells him that the soldiers were here and to run away with his youngest sister Angelina. Santiago was the oldest out of 2 brothers and 2 sisters including Angelina. Santiago ran out of the hut with his sister. He sees the soldiers burning the homes and killing people in his village. He gets behind some bushes to hide with Angelina where his uncle Ramos was lying. His uncle tells him to take the cayuco he built to Florida to tell everyone what is happening and to take the compass in his shirt with him. Santiago got up and some soldiers saw him. Santiago takes Angelina's hand and just ran as fast as he could into the forest where he loses the soldiers. He looks back in the direction of where his village is and he sees that the sky looks red from the fire. (Red Midnight) He still had to get to his Uncle Ramos's home which is still far away to get to the cayuco. Santiago and his sister ride a horse they found and ride in the back of the cars until they got to his home. They went inside and fell asleep. A man was standing over them asking who they were when they woke up. Santiago saw that the man's clothes were raggedy so he thought he was an indigeno also and told him that Ramos was his uncle and that he told him to take his cayuco to Florida when the soldiers came to his village. His name was Enrique and told him that he would help him and to wait there until he comes back. Later, Enrique and his wife Silvia brought them food to take with them and Enrique sailed with Santiago until they reached the Gulf and showed him how the sail and gave him tips and told him that the trip could take about 20 days.

They make it then they get help from an old friend of their uncle. They past by the soldiers and then have many troubles on the ocean.
I liked the book, but thought that it was a bit too slow at first. Then it comes into this adventurous setting.

Can They Make it? Red midnight. .......2006-03-08
Red Midnight is based on a very true story. It is about a boy, and his little sister having to sail to the United States of America because soldiers came to where they lived, and killed all of the rest of their family along with their whole tribe. It's a twenty day adventure of sailing in a tiny little boat. They only have a very little amount of fruit, and also a little amount of tortillas. How will they survive?
I thought this book was a very good book. It was a little sad. But those books are always good books to read, and get into. It had a good moral and a good meaning to it. It also had a lot of very good and down to earth details, and descriptions. Since it was a little sad, and suspending it wasn't the best book, but yet...It makes me really think! About everything that is happening in the world.
Red Midnight.......2006-03-08
The book takes place in Mexico. Santiago and his little sister are trying to escape from being killed by the solders who have already killed everyone in their village. Santiago escaped to his uncle's house with his little sister. When they arrived there, his uncle's neighbors were there watching his possessions. If the solders found out that Santiago ran away, they would kill him and his little sister. They will have to sail to the United States. The neighbors gather up all the food they have, for it will have to last for 20 days. The neighbor will sail with Santiago and his little sister faces some exiting adventures. You'll just have to read the book to find out!
I liked this book. I liked this book because I always wanted to know what happened next, or if they ever reached the United States. I couldn't put it down until I reached the end. I would recommend this book to any one who likes a fun adventure.

Book Description
Jordan Gunn can't swim-at least he can't swim in the cold, dirty lake at summer camp. Fortunately, he meets Nick Dietrich, the waterfront director, who helps him overcome his fears and eventually have enough confidence to pass his swimming test and learn to kayak. Jordan's first relationship with Nick is that of hero-worship. When Jordan helps Nick rescue two of Jordan's friends from the lake at night, Jordan's hero-worship turns into a deep friendship. Later, Nick takes Jordan on his first whitewater kayak trip in northern Wisconsin on the Wolf River. Jordan discovers that it's much harder to kayak on a moving river than on a lake and he is terrified of the rushing water. Early in the trip, Nick is seriously injured in an accident that Jordan thinks he caused. Since Nick can no longer paddle, Jordan must overcome his fears of the water and paddle by himself almost twenty miles to the take-out point to get help to rescue Nick. After Nick is rescued, Jordan must confront his guilt and somehow maintain his friendship with Nick.
