Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great supplementary guide for history buffs.......2001-07-17

We visited England last year, and the Michelin Green guide was very helpful in planning a terrific trip. I don't think I would recommend it as the primary guide; it lacks information on restaurants and accomodation, and, as another reviewer noted, the alphabetical layout makes it hard to choose which general regions you would like to visit. To supplement another book though (we used the Rough Guide),it can be very helpful. The real strength, we found, was in pointing out historic points of interest. It gave a great deal of information about places that the other guide books only provide sketchy information on.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but would buy the regional ones for more detail........1999-10-13

As usual, the Michelin Green Guide was very good. The detailed descriptions were accurate and helpful. Next time I would get the guide for the specific regions for even more detail. The only complaint I can think of is that I would prefer a locational organization as opposed to an alphabetical one.

    3 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2007-09-12

This guide has nice, detailed histories of the all the sights but is so poorly organized and indexed that it is almost impossible to use. God help you if you know you want to visit the War Museum but don't happen to know that its full title is "Imperial War Museum"... you'll never find it in the index or book. Want to go to Hampton Court? That is in the index, but finding the map which shows where it is (mentioned in text but missing from index and table of contents) is difficult. Oh, well, just flip through the book for 15 miniutes, you'll eventually find it, but only a cryptic two words on how to get there. Organization by neighborhood is not, in itself a bad idea, but requires careful indexing. Also, the book seems to assume you will drive through London on your Michelin tires (not advised in London's insane traffic) and provides almost no information on public transport. Pass this one by!

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful maps.......2007-03-17

this book has great maps and many, many suggestions about places to dine. in conjunctions with rick steve's london 2006 all you could possibly need fora great week in london

5 out of 5 stars London Green Guide.......1999-12-29

If you are spending more than a few days in London to "see the sights", then you must have this book. All other tour guides to London are superficial in their coverage of the major museums and tourist sights. This book offers the details the others lack, with well written descriptions of the collections of the major museums including their highlights. The strength of this book is when you want to know more about a particular museum or sight than where it is and when it is open; it is actually most useful when you are in the particular sight. This book does NOT cover hotels, restaurants, etc.; for that information, try any of the other guide books on the market.

2 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-01-11

I had to read this book for my english class. every night for homework I had to read one chapter a night. For every chapter we read we had to pull out the five most important events that happened.on a white sheet of paper we had to divide it into six squares. In the first square we had to right the title of the book and then in the other 5 squares we had to right the five important events at the top and then under where we wrote the event we had to draw a picture explaining it. When we were done reading the book we would have a sixteen page comic book with pictures and writing. This book had sixteen chapters. In my opinion this book wasn't that exciting.I might of enjoyed it more if I didn't have to make the sixteen page comic book.Making the book was actually worse. If it wasn't for english I would have never finished this book because it was very boring.

    2 out of 5 stars Umm, okay..........2006-02-09

In my English class, we had to read this book. I, along with everyone else in the class, think it was quite boring.

It had a lot of info though, which helped in social studies.

It's about a boy named Tengo who wants to go to school, and his friend is white, named Frikkie. Tengo starts to learn about Apartheid and eventually does go to school.

I suggest you read all you want. We only go a chapter at a time, so it's really slow and dull work for us.

4 out of 5 stars This one was required reading for my middle schooler - HIs view, MY view.......2005-12-20

This one was required reading for my son's middle school class. Focusing on two boys, one white (Frikkie), one black (Tengo)...from their beginnings as childhood friends to the ways that apartheid begain to separate then, this story is mostly compelling. It definitely held his interest but I'm not sure he would have felt compelled to read it if it was not required. SOme parts lagged and I had to keep asking questions to get him back on track.

From my perspective, I was bothered by the way the author seemed driven to twist the plot to drive home the inequities of apartheid, when a lighter touch would have sufficed.

Tengo wants to learn about the world and seems destined to be a scholar until the "agitators" force his school to become too formidable to attend, with police and security guards everywhere, with taunts from black "agitators" who scorn their peers who decide to attend school. This makes it nearly impossible for Tengo to stay the course.

Along the way, he is taken in by a kindly white family and given an opportunity to go to school. But he can't help being drawin into the ongoing political crisis, especially when relatives of his are being affected.

At times, it seemed that story lines were twsited, almost to the point of sacrificing the integrity of the plot. I found it hard to believe in some elements of the story, although I felt there was an excellent portrayal of the varying political and cultural differences amongst the blacks and the whites, from sympathetic whites to black "agitators" to those who simply wanted things to go on as they had for generations.

There was also plenty of room for discussion about the history in Africa, about apartheid and how things began to change.

Considering that this book was written by a very young author (only 15, I believe), it is amazingly well-written. Judged by the standards of good literature, however, there is clearly room for growth and maturity in Gordon's writing.

For the purposes of a school course on apartheid, discrimination, racism and social inequality, this book suffices.

    5 out of 5 stars Eragon.......2005-09-12

This book was one of the best written, in my opinion. Christopher Paolini was only 15 when he wrote it! That fact still amazes me whenever I read it. The plot is a suspenseful everchanging object. Although some aspects of the plot were very predictable, like Brom's death, I thought the author kept us in the dark for most of the novel. Overall, great book!

    5 out of 5 stars La SuNnY's ReViEw!!!!.......2005-05-12

IT WAS AWESOME LIKE ACUVE CONTACTS! LOL anewayz... This book depicts what life was like for "blacks" during the aparthied. It made me realize how insensitive people were to "blacks". They were treated worse than dirt. I am so lucky to have been born in the 1990's because now we rarely have any racial abuses. Since I live in Tennessee I have seen some racial remarks but I think all our states are making progress. By 2010 we will be a diverse nation and there will be NO discrimination. Tengo was never physically abused, but the words that some people said really hurt his feelings. I find it quite ironic that Tengo, whose black, wants to go to school while Frikkie, whose white, wants to quit school and work on the farm. This book was great because it teaches everyone that there is not a nobody among everybody. I would love to thank Mrs. Erskine for making me read this dramatic book with vivid details!

      Product Description

This novel shows the bonds of friendship under the strain of apartheid as two lifelong friends, Tengo and Frikkie, come of age amidst the tragedy of South Africa. This novel about life in South Africa is sure to give readers a better understanding of what lies behind the newspaper headlines and TV stories. Tengo is the 10-year-old son of workers on Oom Koos's large farm in the Transvaal. He longs to go to school like his friend Frikkie, who visits his uncle's farm on holidays. But Tengo's family is too poor to pay for the education that comes free to whites. He finally gets his wish at age 14. Tengo goes to live with his cousin in a squalid township outside Johannesburg and studies furiously. After three years, he is almost ready for college, but a year-long school boycott ruins his chances and he is drawn into the fight against apartheid. When he and Frikkie meet in a violent confrontation, Tengo realizes that he will carry on the struggle for freedom as a scholar, not a soldier. The writing here is powerful, evoking in minute detail daily life and the broad landscapes of the country.

5 out of 5 stars A Poignant and Insightful Book about Mali and Economic Development .......2005-07-12

As an American who has spent 24 years living and working in Africa, including nine years in Mali, I judge "Waiting for Rain" to be an excellent book about that beautiful country. It provides a sensitive, informed, insightful view of the challenges Malians face to improve their lives through economic and social development programs. Because Mali is so diverse -- culturally, ethnically, ecologically -- I was especially impressed with the fact that Mr. Lucke was able to see and evaluate, firsthand, development efforts throughout the country. He clearly understands that different ethnic and ecological zones -- for example, the Gao corridor versus the Upper Niger River Valley -- present different challenges. I appreciated Lucke's professional views and personal touches. His sense of humor -- which I found delightful -- pervades the book but is in no way disrespectful to Malians and their culture. His insights about expatriate life in a country emerging from its early socialist years to one driven by market economics will be useful for newcomers to Mali and Africa. Mr. Lucke clearly had a good grasp of the issues that development professional and do-gooders need to understand so that they can honor the "do no harm" mandate. There are very few books in English (Pascal Imperato's come to my mind) that can teach the reader about Mali like "Waiting for Rain." Though a second edition may be warranted, I include Mr. Lucke's work among the very best. This reviewer highly recommends it to readers interested in African economic development or Malian culture, as well as anyone planning to visit or work in Mali.

4 out of 5 stars Good book -- deserves better editing.......2002-12-27

The book rings true as a vivid description of life in development work. It's a very good and very informative read. My only complaint is that it could be better edited. Simple grammar errors occasionally slip in (for example, I remember the phrase "beckon call" used when "beck and call" was intended). Also the author's description of his work sometimes dwells on technical issues that slow up the story a little.

The reviewer from Mali who complained of distortions should remember that the author worked in Mali 20 years ago, and that conditions have no doubt improved since then.

1 out of 5 stars Distortion of Facts.......2002-02-02

After reading this books I was quite dismayed at the many distortions of Mr. Lucke's book.
As a person who has experience in the region I continued to wonder where Mr. Lucke found or conducted his research. It was a real dissappointment.

5 out of 5 stars from the "Journal of Community Health".......2001-05-28

While many Americans have worked for the US Agency for International Development over the years, few have subsequently penned their reminiscences as Lewis Lucke has done in "Waiting for Rain". This authobiographical volume recounts both his life there and issues of economic development relevant not only to Mali, but also many other developing countries. The author successfully weaves these two broad themes through his account, which makes for an enjoyable and informative read. A sensitive and insightful observer, Lucke describes Malians and their country with empathy and understanding. His vivid, and at times humorous, descriptions of expatriate life in the country will loudly resonate with anyone who has spent time in this part of Africa. Traveling throughout the country, he was able to observe well-intentioned development projects gone wrong, but also a number of success stories. Above all else, he came to know the Malians and their country well, and developed a sincere admiration for their incredible capacity to overcome enormous adversity. Lucke's narrative is enriched by fine descriptive detail and many captivating human interest stories which make it enjoyable reading. "Waiting for Rain" will appeal to a very broad audience of readers including armchair travelers, international development workers and those interested in Africa.

Pascal James Imperato, MD, MPH & TM, Editor

5 out of 5 stars This book captures what it's like to live and work in Mali........1999-07-14

I've been living in Mali for over 15 years now, and this book truly and accurately captures the emotions, joys and tribulations of living and working in the development field in Mali. A "must read" for anyone interested in international development and life in West Africa. Poignant, touching and very well written.

        Book Description

When droughts hit northeastern Brazil, thousands of rural workers are forced to abandon their homes for the cities in search of work. The double impact of drought and corruption--with politicians taking advantage of drought to buy votes and pilfer government accounts--contributes to an endless cycle of suffering. Nicholas Arons goes to sources such as novels, poetry, popular art, and oral history in order to understand the impact of drought and the phenomenon of drought politics. His book dramatically depicts a region where drought--even during rainy seasons--is ubiquitous in the hearts and minds of its residents.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2004-10-28

If you are planning to travel in Brazil, or if you simply seek a better understanding of its history and its people, you must read this book. Before this, I never realized the impact of drought in Brazil, nor did I appreciate the beauty and the suffering of Brazilians. A creative, inspired, tragic and often funny story - this book will stay with me.

5 out of 5 stars A lyrical tale of hardship and human dignity.......2004-10-13

I have traveled in the Northeast of Brasil and found it to be an area that does not lend itself easily to summation or description. The hardship and happiness - the spirit of the people - are best reflected in the oral poetry passed between and through generations. And the politics of the area are painful to observe. But Mr. Arons does a great job of capturing the essential spirit of the people of whom he writes. Capturing their own lyrical history and distilling it into a plaintive, kind book of understanding does a tremendous service to a culture and history that time could otherwise forget.

Anyone interested in the politics of water, an issue of increasing importance in the developing world now and for years to come should read this book. Anyone interested in Brasil (more than just carnaval and other hedonistic fun) should read this book. Anyone interested in oral history MUST read this book.

This early novel deals with the pain and dislocation of the clash of the old and new ways - the educated young man determined to go overseas, and the elders of the family believing his duty is to stay and head the family.
