4 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories........2007-07-04

Up to the usual great quality, Lonely Planets travel guides are generally the best reference tool for travellers. However, there is a beautiful and brilliant guide that was published about 20 months ago near Bethlehem by the Alternative Tourism Group which is currently only available on AMAZON UK for under 18#, called Palestine and Palestinians a 6star rating surpassing any travel book published thus far on the oPt and Israel where now razed villages or lost histories now exist. It will make any trip to the unholy Holy Land a more enriching and meaningful experience and highly recommended.

It looks easy to me to go around this country, even under Israel's attack with missile.

1 out of 5 stars Very biased -- you can do MUCH better.......2007-05-04

I buy a guide book to learn about the country I am visiting, preferably through a reasonably sympathetic eye. I don't want cheerleading or rose-colored glasses, but I don't expect open hostility or overt political bias. But the Lonely Planet Guide to Israel and the Palestinian Territories is full of just that. The author is overtly anti-Zionist in his tone, unnecessarily political, and to me outright offensive. I DO begrudge one's political views in a travel guide! If I want a political text (and I read voraciously about Israel, from a variety of viewpoints), I will buy one.

This is a terrible guide. You can do much better, and at the time of this writing, I would suggest the Frommer's Israel Guide, just released in October 2006. Anything would be better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A Riveting Read.......2006-07-30

I have read and enjoyed a wide variety of Lonely Planet guides during my travels. But by far ISRAEL & THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES is my favorite. I picked it up before a planned trip to Israel and couldn't put it down. When I finished it, I couldn't wait to get the plane to check out this legendary country for myself. And then the trip was cancelled. I was devastated.

Though I cannot address the accuracy of restaurant, hotel and shopping recommendations here, I can say this book offers a fantastic selection of information about the history of the area, its peoples and peculiar challenges.

Reading how other reviewers have detected an anti-Israeli bias from authors Paul Hellander, Andrew Humphreys and Neil Tilbury surprised me. I noticed none of this when I first read this book, but opening it again I see it on every page from an inset box about Israeli rudeness to another that goes on and on about the challenges for Orthodox Jewish gays. I see no mention here about the "challenges" gays face in Islam.

Perhaps I was too captivated by the authors' accounts of things like "Jerusalum Syndrome" to notice the authors' political bent. And that's fine. I do not begrudge the authors their opinions.

In fact, though I am far from anti-Israel, generally speaking I prefer a point-of-view to bland, allegedly "objective" information.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial.......2004-06-04

I am a LP fan, but after been living in Israel for almost 3 years I have to say that this guide is very superficial. It could be much better ... for example, there are restaurants that everybody know in Israel, very popular, very nice that are not mentioned in the guide. I would expect something more from LP ... sorry :(

1 out of 5 stars Political opinion VS visitors guidebook.......2004-01-23

I have a number of Lonely Planet guides and this is the only one that goes out of its way to make political statements about the country. Along with that is the poorly researched information about what to see and where to stay.

Shame on Lonely Planet. They are unquestionably the best guide books around except for this one.

2 out of 5 stars There are more helpful books on travel.......2003-02-06

I am sorry I bought this book. It is not a terrible book, and it came recommended, but it was disappointing. I wanted something different than the usual books, but simply put, the more widely known guide books are better and more helpful.

Book Description

Ben Black is like any other guy in his twenties: he switches between jobs, he lives on the rough, he travels off the beaten track. He smokes grass, he flirts with politics, he falls in love.

When Ben migrates from Scotland to Israel, his life takes a more exotic turn. He explores the lost city of Petra and a secret, secluded beach in the Sinai Desert. He goes camel racing with the Bedouin and feasts in the hummous parlours of Tel Aviv and Jaffa. Then there is the experience that could occur nowhere else: a suicide bomb blast on his bus route to work.

His life alters irreversibly one day when his military call-up papers arrive and Ben - having moved to Israel in the mid 1990s as the promise of peace seemed so close - is forced to choose between his conscience and his country.

As Ben tries to reconcile his belief in the inevitability of a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with the realities of military service, he brings into sharp, personal focus the meanings of war and peace in the Middle East.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad. . .not so good........2002-04-27

I read this book in two sittings. Given current events, I was more motivated than I would have been otherwise. As I write this review, I'm conflicted because I was nauseated by the author's obviously convenient morality while enjoying his depictions of his time in Israel. If you just can't be bothered by your responsibilities to society, I can understand how fashionable it would be to present yourself as a secular, conscientious objector. In the final epilogue, Mr. Black attempts to reconcile his behavior vis a vis Israel's social contract.

I would've been more sympathethic if his rationalizations appeared more honest or if he wasn't a well-educated, well-traveled male, who should, by age 27, the speed at which 3 years passes. However, having read the previous chapters, it felt more like he, like the trust-funded, party boy who resists joining the family business, just couldn't be bothered with his part of the bargain. As I finish this paragraph, I wonder if my Jewish college friends would've dismissively labelled him with that nebulous Yiddish insult--nebbish.

Now with that largely feel-good rant complete, in the main, I enjoyed "meeting" the people he described to us (my personal favorite was the lady making that godawful stuff Turks call coffee). Furthermore, I especially enjoyed the section detailing the sport of Israeli politics during elections as well as the sections on life in the kibbutz. Finally, I got fine laughs out of his interactions with the driver's license examiner and the deferment board.

Bottom line: I enjoyed the book and the author writes well, but found his character unimpressive by the end of the book

5 out of 5 stars As informative as a guide, as pleasurable as a novel.......2001-11-13

Black's debut sends the reader into a contradictory world of beauty and war, of passion and of aggression. To read it is to be there, yet yearn to experience the treasures of the middle east and learn the complexities first hand that make it such a fascinating place. Travalogues can be tedious when too informative and yet when too personal can be frustratingly useless to the traveller. Black, however, strikes a balance that both inspires the reader to go, offering useful advice, in a style that is compelling. The journey from the innocence of youth to the dawning realities of adulthood provides a perfect backdrop to the intricacies of middle-east politics and so opens the reader's eyes to the humanity of what one sees on the news. I was sad I finished it so quickly. I might just have to book a flight...

5 out of 5 stars You Can Taste the Hummous.......2001-09-20

Black's first effort takes us to a time in our very near past when peace in the Middle East was almost reality.
Both a personal and objective account of the mid-late nineties in one of the most written about countries on the planet.
Black does not bog us down with history but takes us on a fresh and contemporary tour of a region so often divided by politics, religion and war. Whilst his own politics are obvious they are not imposed upon the reader and he presents a somewhat balanced view of all arguments in the conflicts.
However it must be noted that this is also a travlogue and Black often takes us off the beaten path to some of the gems and treasures hidden in deserts, moutains, chasms and alleyways. His desriptions of people places and events are so realistic that you can actually taste the hummous.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful Account of a Journey of a Person and of Peoples.......2001-09-13

I have to be honest and say I suspect that "Ben Black" is not a first time writer but a more experienced and established name who for some reason is writing under a pseudonym. Why do I say this? Because it is rare enough to come across such a well-writen, insightful, humurous & ultimately human account of a journey in one of the world's most turbulent regions - let alone from somone with no experience of writing.

Having spent many separate months and years in the Middle East (many during the same periods as Black was there), I can honestly say that he has managed somehow to capture the feel and spirit of much of the region and peoples, and bottled it up in this gem of a book. This should be required reading for anyone thinking of spending any time in or around Israel, and is particularly poignant in the current climate. I can't reccomend it enough.

Come on "Ben", who are you really, and when is your next book coming out?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent material, well-written, and extremely useful !.......2001-09-11

This book constitutes an extremely useful tool and pleasant reading, for those interested in Israeli and Middle East politics and society, as well as travelers to the region (especially during this turbulent time). It is excellent to have a view from the author about the current Middle East crisis. While clearly standing on one side rather than the other, the author remains extremely objective and without any bias, in examining the causes and perspectives of the present Middle East crisis - a topic he clearly feels very strongly about. The book is extremely well-written, ensuring pleasant and captivating reading for all. Likewise, it contains extremely useful and up-to-date information, which will be of immense value for the traveler. It is a book any traveler, especially if interested in politics and society, should take with herself / himself before leaving for the region.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Sri Lanka Travel Guide.......2005-08-15

I barely give "Lonely Planet Sri Lanka" 5 stars as they have some nice color photos of different activities and areas in Sri Lanka, they also have good individual area maps though straight black and white not topographical or color as they have in "Insight Guide Sri Lanka". Basically a very nicely laid out guide with just about all the information you would hope to expect or need.

5 out of 5 stars The Pearl of the Orient .......2005-01-19

Sri Lanka is an island of exceptional beauty -- but there is trouble in paradise. For two decades the island has been torn apart by violence between the two largest ethnic groups, Buddhist Sinhalese and Hindu Tamils. One of my most vivid memories of Colombo was a march of Buddhist monks carrying signs with political sentiments such as, "Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country." The Tamil Tigers, on their part, will probably be remembered as virtuoso suicide bombers. So much for "tolerant" Asian religions.

Most of the violence has now ceased and the traveler need not be concerned with it, although traveling by land from Colombo to Jaffna in the north one has to pass along a dirt highway lined in places with minefields. Military fortresses will also be encountered along main highways.

I'm not much of a beach fan, although that's why most tourists go to Sri Lanka. Given the ravages of the tsunami most of the beach resorts on the South and East coasts have probably been damaged. So this is an excellent time to go to Sri Lanka to see the beautiful tea estates in the cool, cloudy hill country and the Buddhist monuments near the center of the island. For the sand and sea set, some decent beach resorts near Colombo on the West coast were probably not affected by the Tsunami.

The Lonely Planet Guide sums up the many attractions of this beautiful country. As always, it includes reliable information on history and practical matters plus sidebars on interesting subjects such as birds, turtles, train schedules, and 101 uses for a coconut.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide.......2004-11-18

I traveled to Sri Lanka for New Year's 2004, and found the information contained to be extremely helpful. Especially the accommodation information. When I arrived to Sri Lanka, I had nothing planned - and was going to hire a driver to take me around. Finding a driver, we sat down to plan the trip, book the hotels etc... I was able to compare the prices listed in the Lonely Planet Guide with those quoted and used the book to bargain the prices down - it was great! Most of the stuff in the guide was tourist orientated - where I prefer to take the road less traveled. I definitely recommend getting this guide before you head over - and read it over a few times before getting there, it will help you out heaps!

4 out of 5 stars useful and informative.......2003-12-07

I used the latest edition of this book (published August 2003) while travelling around Sri Lanka for a month in November 2003. I found the information in the book to be accurate and easy to find. Like most Lonely Planet guide books its strength is detailed logistical information such as bus and train times, accommodation and opening times. The only negative point is that sometimes the historical and background information is a little vague and lacks specific dates. Still I would thoroughly recommend this book for any independent traveller in Sri Lanka. It will save you time and money and help you enjoy your holiday even more.

1 out of 5 stars Prejudice with misinformation to boot.......2001-02-20

This book is so biased against anything Jewish in Jerusalem that it borders on an anti-semitic screed. It waxes hysterical about ultra-orthodox Jews and neighborhoods. In real life, these are the safest places in the city, and offer some of the most interesting sights and shops. Beautiful churches and mosques are described in detail, but the one decorative Jewish place of worship, the Great Synagogue, is dismissed with a single statement: that its construction was a waste of money!

The relentless axe-grinding leads to some dubious advice. Readers are told to patronize Arab taxis and hotels to make up for their loss of business during the intifada. That's an awful lot like the Jews of Germany being billed for the cleanup after Kristallnacht.

Ordinary misinformation makes this guide next to useless. The Botanical Gardens are not free, entrance is about $10--and well worth it. Descriptions of Jewish ritual are skewed and include some real howlers. I wonder if their source was pulling their leg.

In addition, while I'd always thought that it's impossible to take a bad picture in the Holy City, this guide is peppered with the most boring photography I've ever seen. Any kid with a disposable camera could have done better.

3 out of 5 stars CONDENSED YERUSALHAIM.......2000-06-12

This fascinating city, eternal and enticing in all its aspects, is here visited in a summary but useful way. The Capital of David's Kingdom and seat of the Temple, as well as Jesus' place of crucifixion and Mohammed's ascent to Heaven, Jerusalem is also a laboratory of modernity. From the holy places to the most fashionable night clubs, this guide leads you to discovering the immortal city, one of the most complex and intriguing in the world. The book includes excursions to Betlehem, Jericho, Masada and the Dead Sea. Good value.

3 out of 5 stars Get the Israel LPG instead.......2000-02-09

The information in this slim volume is taken directly from the Lonely Planet Guide to Israel, and the coverage in the latter guide is better for the day trips North and South that you'll want to take. Buying both is a complete waste of money, and I'd really recommend getting the LPG Israel even if you don't plan to stray far from Jerusalem.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect city guide.......1999-02-05

This guide gives you all the informations you need. It contains all nessesary information the backpacker need for a holiday in Jerusalem. Buy it and you would not be dissapointet.

I travelled to Israel a few years ago, bringing both the Lonely Planet guide and the Let's Go. I found Let's Go to be better on most counts, more up-to-date and with more relevant info, plus a larger selection of good places to stay and/or eat. In addition, Let's Go's recent-history section was far better. In fact, the only thing I liked better about Lonely Planet's guide was that it was printed on nicer paper.

          Book Description

For Tanpopo Yamazaki, life at the elitist Meiô Academy seems way out of her league. The daughters of wealthy families snub her; other students make light of the fact that she actually tested into Meiô instead of relying on family connections, and the cute boy she saw tending a dandelion the day before wouldn't even acknowledge her existence. Hoping to make friends and have some fun, Tanpopo starts up a gardening committee, but will this help her survive in a school where superficiality and nepotism reign supreme? IMA DOKI follows the trials and tribulations of a budding horticulturist as she makes her way down the winding road to friendship. From Yû Watase, one of Japan's most beloved shôjo artists, IMA DOKI packs comedic charm and heartfelt antics into an adorable bouquet of whimsical fantasy.

          5 out of 5 stars Imadoki 5.......2006-07-12

Yuu Watase has ended another really good series. I promise you'll like the way this one turns out. Cause even though Tanpopo and Koki go their seperate ways. He ends up going after her. Aw so cute. This also has a couple nice little stories in the back to make up for the ending being short. The first one is the prologue to Imadoki nowadays. Back before Tanpopo went to Tokyo, and how she got poplar. The Second one is about a afraid of germs, and a friend of her family comes and helps her try to get over the fear. This was a great book, and I hope whoever buys it will like it as much as I did.

          4 out of 5 stars ***cute & funny***.......2006-05-18

Very cute series and very hillarious. Gosh, high school can be so cruel sometimes truthfully I think tanpopo is a ditz but she has a little spunk in her. So with a cutie whos a ditz and a hottie whos rich this book gets interesting everytime. ***a series worth buying***

5 out of 5 stars hilarious yet touching.......2006-04-22

Imadoki! is one of those rare mangas you will encounter. Though it is a typical high school story it is more. It is about friendship, determination, courage, and most of all love. Yamazaki Tanpopo enters Meio Academy where everyone is rich and snubs her. She being a middle-class person tries to befriend the "lord" of the school Kugyou Koki. B/c he wants nothing to do with her, Tanpopo starts up the gardening committee. Gradually Koki's barriers around his heart are broken and he becomes her friend. They are joined by other students slowly, and little by little Tanpopo has an impact on their life as do they on her.

I must say Imadoki is probably one of the most hilarious mangas I have read. I found myself laughing almost every page--mainly because of the character "Flippy" but also because of how naive Tanpopo is. But I love her...she is a strong, determined, couragous girl who puts friendship before anything else.

My friend and I went shopping and she bought this. Reading the back of the book, the plot sounded dull and I totally dissed it...but I found scanlations of it and read it out of curiousity and ended up loving it sooo much I just had to buy it in actual book form. And so far out of all the Yuu Watase manga I've read, this is probably my favorite.

So if you are a fan of shoujo manga pick this up (its only 5 volumes) and join in on the fun in Imadoki! I'm sure you'll be laughing really hard but yet be touched by this wonderful tale.

          5 out of 5 stars Adorable.......2006-04-17

I absolutely LOVE Imadoki! It is only five volumes, and completely worth the time! The characters are hillarious, sweet, and worth thinking about. I will always be happy that I picked it up. Watase never fails to make me smile!!

4 out of 5 stars the final chapter...........2006-02-06

don't get me wrong... i loved imadoki! it was such a cute series and this author rocks (ive read some ceres and all 17 (since the 18th isn't out) of fushigi yugi)...
but this last one was a little disappointment i was expecting as much excitment as the rest. Even though it did tie up some loose-ends to the story it was short like half if not even of the book. the other 1/3 was a little pre-quel. then something off the subject/series write in. didnt seem i got my money worth for it being the CONCLUSION. ya know
