This book was extremely valuable during our recent stay on the island of Tenerife, just outside of Puerto de la Cruz.
I would have liked to see more photographs but otherwise and excellent book and well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Spain--in alphabetical order.......2007-07-05

I used this book in 2005 to visit Madrid/Toledo/Segovia/Seville/Granada and Cordoba and then again in 2007 on a 10 day trip through Galicia. The book's main advantage is that towns/cities are in alphabetical order, so info is easy to find.

However, I find the text lacking in sparkle--a bit too dull.........It was my #3 choice for information. (I also had the DK guide and the Rough Guide)

The size and shape of this book make it easy to carry during the day, but most of the time, I carried the DK guide!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic travel guide.......2006-03-24

As expected from the Michelin Green Guides series, this one too is a wonderful travel companion. Accurate and up to date, covers all important milestones and goes past the shallow surface barely scratched by other travel guides.
This Michelin Green Guides is the best available, if you're going to travel to Spain don't leave home without it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to Understanding Canarian Culture.......2003-07-17

We took our first trip to Tenerife in December 2002 and took this book with us. We read the historical information and found that it really helped us to understand Canarian culture and traditions. The sections on cuisine were also quite helpful, as Canarians have a cuisine of their own. Conejo Salmorejo is a local dish that you must try (or Pollo for those who fear rabbit) as well as chilled red wine - Yummy!

Read carefully and plan on following the advice in the book. It won't lead you astray!

On December 26, 1998, 115 yachts set out from Sydney Harbor at the start of the Sydney to Hobart race--a grueling 735-mile race down the east coast of Australia, across the Bass Strait, and down the length of Tasmania. The Syd-Hob is widely known as the toughest open-ocean race on earth, but the 1998 race was the toughest yet. By the end of the day on the 29th, six lives were lost, over 50 sailors were rescued, five boats were sunk, and many more boats--and sailors--were damaged.

A Hard Chance is another look at the Syd-Hob disaster, one refreshingly free of overarching fingerpointing. While the efforts of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in rescuing more than 50 sailors are enthusiastically praised, the Weather Bureau--which bore the brunt of the blame by some accounts--is absolved. In the end it was each sailor's decision to participate, and each skipper's responsibility to make decisions for his or her ship. ("It is one thing to willingly participate in an ocean race as a sport, a pastime or a passion. It is voluntary. None of the 1,135 participants was on board because he or she was required to be.")

Journalist Kim Leighton allows the voices of the participants to shine through, lending immediacy to his narrative of a dangerous race gone seriously wrong. The text does sometimes get bogged down in technical detail, and landlubbers may feel adrift in a sea of sailing terminology ("We started to gibe as the wind shifted and we blew a spinnaker, which we replaced with a number three jib"), but the story remains compelling. --Sunny Delaney

            Book Description

When 114 sailing yachts set out from Australia's Sydney Harbor on Boxing Day, December 26, 1998, for the 43rd Annual Sydney-to-Hobart ocean classic the mood was festive. Crowds jammed the harbor and headlands in the midsummer heat to watch the yachts tack east to the Sydney Heads, set colorful spinnakers and run with the wind, south, for the finish line 630 miles distant in Hobart, Tasmania. None knew they were being stalked by a deadly storm. In the next 48 hours, the monster storm would strike, destroying yachts, washing scores of sailors overboard into 80-foot seas, killing six and spurring the largest sea rescue ever mounted by Australians. In the style of A Perfect Storm and Into Thin Air, A Hard Chance traces the fateful collision course between a violent storm at sea and the world-class sailors and racing yachts that would bear its full and deadly fury. As the storm unleashes its power, A Hard Chance amplifies the sea of terror that individual rescuers and racers overcame through skill and raw courage to save their boats and crew and pluck 55 doomed yachtsmen from the Tasman Sea.

            5 out of 5 stars Loved It!.......2003-12-26

You are there - Leighton's descriptions make you feel every bump and thud. The author's choice of words and descriptions show a true story teller at work. What a story! I have no desire to sail - ever..

1 out of 5 stars I was not impressed ...........2000-03-14

I was anticipating a terrific read after I looked over exerpts of the book on the America's Cup Web site ... but frankly I was bored. I did read the whole book but compared to Fastnet Force 10 this book is very weak in story and technical descriptions.

            5 out of 5 stars A Hard Chance-And the Race to Y2K.......2000-01-07

Just finised Kim Leighton's A Hard Chance: The Sydney-Hobart Race Disaster this past weekend as we moved into the new millenium. The book provided just enough of the factual details to excite in any sailor's imagination a picture of what it must have been like to be on each of the ill-fated yachts during the brunt of the storm. Just as watching a movie derived from a Stephen King novel is never quite as scary as reading the book, there is nothing more bone-chilling than what those of us can imagine who have rode out a bad storm aboard a sailboat. I found the book also to be fortified with enough descriptions and definitions so as to be understood by nonsailors as well. In particular, I identified with David Cook, one of the rescued crewmembers of Solo Globe Challenger, who said that he was willing to attempt the race again but only if accompanied by the same crew. As I awaited whatever disaster Y2K might bring, I noticed an interesting similarity. Here I was surrounded by the same crew with which I had weathered storms racing on Lake Erie aboard the yacht "Moonshadow". As we watched the millenium change in Australia, we breathed a sigh of relief and went back to talking about our times together on the water and shared Kim's book.

1 out of 5 stars Never sailed before.......1999-12-30

Kim has clearly never sailed. I got this as a gift with the anticipation of reading an account similar to "Fastnet, Force 10" and was totally disapponited. Kim's complete lack of understanding of sailing made it almost impossible to understand what he was trying to explain. You don't need to use a lot of "jargon" in writing a sailing book but you should be accurate. I knew I was in trouble when the first picture in the book, identified as "manuvering before the start", was clearly taken after the start. If you have even a small amount of sailing knowledge and want to read this account to learn something, you'll be disappointed.

            5 out of 5 stars excellent and concise,gripping story,well written,good det.......1999-11-01

Kim Leighton has a nice way of weaving together the multiple details, gives appropriate attention to the the overall story and those behind the scenes. One gains/reaffirms a deep appreciation for all involved;sailing crews, families, rescue teams.

              Book Description

The civil liberties landscape in Australia has changed irrevocably since Bali and September 11, with some of the most draconian counter-terrorism measures in the western world. Once-sacrosanct civil and political rights--freedom of expression, freedom of association, protection from arbitrary detention, the right to independent legal advice--have been tossed aside in the name of the "war on terror." This book questions whether we can protect ourselves by removing the very freedoms that define a democracy.

In Terror Laws, Jenny Hocking traces the extraordinary expansion of Australia's internal security, from the hesitant formation of ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Service) barely fifty years ago to the powerful, unfettered, counter-terrorism network that now reaches into every corner of Australians' lives.

                Book Description

Throughout the world the fear of terrorist attack has fuelled new laws and controls, putting at risk fundamental rights and freedoms. Australia is no exception. But unlike every other western nation we have no Bill of Rights to counter-balance threats to civil liberties. Australian governments retain the power to override the human rights and anti-discrimination legislation we take for granted.

In this important book George Williams outlines the case for a national Bill of Rights to guarantee the rights of all Australians. Surveying the federal government's response to September 11 and the Bali attack, Williams shows how the threat of terrorism makes the protection of basic rights more, not less urgent. He examines other recent controversies, including mandatory sentencing and racial discrimination, discusses the Australian Capital Territory's innovative Bill of Rights legislation, and spells out a realistic program for change.

Vividly argued and persuasive, this is a vital contribution to the debate over how Australia should respond to the terrorist threat without compromising basic rights and freedoms.

                      Book Description

In this timely and important book, Andrew Lynch and George Williams provide a clear and accessible guide to the major components of Australia's anti-terrorism laws and their effects. They show readers: • what constitutes a crime of terrorism in Australia • what powers our main intelligence agency has to question and detain members of the community • what happens when the authorities seek a control order or an order of preventative detention over an individual• what speech risks making a person liable for the crime of sedition• how judicial processes have been modified for the trial of people charged with terrorism offences Lynch and Williams have contributed vigorously to the public debate since September 11. In What Price Security? they argue that Australia has gone too far in limiting civil rights in the name of anti-terrorism. “In fighting the `war on terror',” they write, “it is vital that we do not allow ourselves to become the victim of our own fears.”

                          Description:
The cross-cultural generality of terror management theory was examined in Australia and Japan. Based on previous research suggesting that individualism is stronger in Australia than in Japan, mortality salience was predicted to enhance individualism in Australia, but to reduce it in Japan. The results supported this prediction. Consistent with the theory, the cultural pattern of worldview defense was found only among Australians and Japanese with low self-esteem. We also found preliminary evidence that collective mortality (death of one's in-group) has a greater impact than personal mortality (personal death) in Japan. Although the cultural worldview and self-esteem may serve terror management functions in both cultures, there may be differences between cultures in the type of mortality that produces the greatest levels of anxiety and the manner in which a given worldview is used to cope with anxiety about mortality.
