3 out of 5 stars Not bad for Harvard College students.......2004-03-24

This guidebook has a lot of good info, but it lacks the depth found in other travel guides. The recommendations are largely by and for college students, although other people are catered to. We liked Explore Costa Rica for background information--as well as for its online updates, which we found on the publisher's web site.

5 out of 5 stars Come on, now!.......2004-02-21

This guidebook is no where NEAR as bad as the other reviewers are making it out to be. It's just that it's scope is very defined: Budget travelers who are visiting the country for 1 or 2 weeks.

I found the entries to be very honest and simple; some guidebooks fall all over themselves being "exactamundo" if you know what I mean. All I know, is that it was very helpful WHILE traveling there, especially in the restaurant listings.

Another book I found helpful BEFORE I went, was a more general social history of the country, "Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made."

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2004-01-27

Thought I would give some of Lonely Planet's competition a try, and I was sorely disappointed. The book had little useful information and hardly any accomodation or restaurant listings above their "1" rating (which is the least expensive). I ended up finding more useful information from the free maps and brochures I got when I was acutally in Costa Rica. Do yourself a favor and get the Lonely Planet version instead...

4 out of 5 stars Good for budget travellers.......2003-10-03

I reviewed numerous Costa Rica guide books and found this one to be one of the few that actually included plenty of budget options. And it is written in a fun style. Good times.

2 out of 5 stars Good but not the best.......2002-12-28

This guide has accurate descriptions, up-to-date maps and a good introductory section. Its drawback is that it only has a very limited sample of hotel and restaraunt listings for many locations (like Monteverde). The descriptions are quite good but limited.

I know it is impossible to cover everything, but I cannot deduce a strategy or a pattern used for including some hotels and eliminating others. This is a good guide for a person who is in Costa Rica for 7-10 days and is going to cover so much ground that too much detail would be overwhelming. However, if you intend to travel at a slower pace or spend more time in Costa Rica, there are better choices.

3 out of 5 stars This is a good guide, but there are others that are better........2003-03-30

Besides "Let's Go Central America", I took two other guides with me for a three week stay in Nicaragua ("Moon Handbook-Nicaragua" & "FootPrint Central America" [see my reviews]). Though this is a good guide, the others were better.

'Let's Go' targets a budget minded, backpacker audience. In this Central America guide the descriptions of the regions, areas, cities and town are more abbreviated; and they lack the depth, explanations and information needed to allow you to appreciate where you are going and what you will see and experience. For example, the entire description for a fantastic archipelago in Nicaragua called `Archipelago de Solentiname' is only eight words, "Renowned for its natural beauty and minimalist paintings."

The guides 'Accommodations', 'Food' and 'Sights' are accurate and contemporary, but mainly scoped for the budget minded. Because the guide covers all of Central America you will find the history, economy, culture and environment sections abbreviated. Thus, if you are going to just one country you would be better off with just that country's guide.

Let's Go Central America 2002 would be most useful for those on a tight budget and for those going to various Central American Countries. But, if I was to choose just one guide for all Central America, it would be: "FootPrint's Central America".
That said, this is still a usable and reliable guide. Recommended

4 out of 5 stars Lived in Beijing.......2005-10-17

This book was indispensable when my husband and I lived in Beijing for 6 months. I bought it together with Lonely Planet's The Best of Beijing, but found later on that I preferred to use this book because it contained a lot of leads to great deals on shopping, restaurants, etc. (Read: Good but cheap, and that's where most locals go) After checking out places from both books, I found Lonely Planet's contained a significant amount of "high end" places. Gave this book four stars only because I found that some prices quoted on particular restaurants are a bit outdated. Other than that, I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars These last two reviews are on CHINA, NOT CHILE!!!.......2005-06-23

I've reported the problem to Amazon... I think.

I have used the Let's Go series for my trips to Thailand, Vietnam and Europe (many times). Even to New York and Hawaii! I plan on using their guides again for Chile and Peru. This series is reliable for their tips on restaurants, things you MUST see, places to stay and insiders guide to local happenings. I recommend this book to anyone, young and old alike that want to see and do things on a budget or close to one. As for Lonely Planet guides - they are good, but the travelers/writers don't seem like they have opinions about any thing or any taste in food or preferences in restaurants or bars or clubs. They just tell you what it is or list a restaurant or bar that they went to, but they don't seem to have opinions or NEVER seem to recommend anything particularly good or interesting. Unfortunately, since Let's Go did not come out with Let's Go Argentina, I will have to rely on using a Lonely Planet guide for that country and just go through the hits or misses. I wished Let's Go did a guide book of Let's Go South America, like how they did one for Let's Go Europe (highly recommended!), so I wouldn't have to get separate guide books. After using the Let's Go Chile guidebook, I'll come back to really rate this guide book. However, I must assign stars to this review to get this posted, so I will go in the middle and give it a 3 star.

4 out of 5 stars overall quite useful, but needs to be updated.......2005-01-13

I used the Let's Go Eastern Europe book last summer and liked it so I gave this a shot for a trip this winter to China (Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Guilin, Yangshuo, Guangzhuo, and Hong Kong). Overall I like the way that information is presented/organized in the Let's Go books better than Lonely Planet, but this particular edition is due for an update. Some small (but possibly confusing) problems: certain large streets in Chinese cities have different names indicating the north/south/east/west side. This wasn't explained until deep in the book on a section on a particular city, but it is pretty important for orienting oneself. That should have been foregrounded and the street names for addresses and maps made consistent throughout. Also more detailed/comprehensive maps (with coverage of subway systems in cities where they exist would have been great). We came across a number of places that were no longer in existence, but that just harkens back to my earlier comment. It also would have been nice to have more Chinese on the maps (in addition to Romanizations) when asking for directions, etc.
All in all, well done but there is still room for improvement. I would use a Let's Go guide again.

5 out of 5 stars Not Useful for the Atacama Desert, true-but fine otherwise.......2004-12-05

The only other review declared that they "used this book during our trip to the Atacama Desert. It was not helpful..." Well, I imagine it wouldn't be very useful, seeing that the Atacama Desert is in Chile, not in China!

I generally prefer the Lonely Planet guides over the Let's Go guides, which tend to sound like they are written by know-it-all teenagers with too little life experience to be offering advice to real grown-ups. This guide on China, in contrast, is informative and pragmatic rather than preachy. Just one cautionary note: If you are actually planning on traveling around China on your own and don't speak Chinese, get a couple other guides and review them also-China is one of the few remaining countries where you cannot count on every shopkeeper and hotel manager conveniently being able to speak English.

2 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and incomplete.......2004-02-19

We used this book during our trip to the Atacama Desert. It was not helpful for any of the things that are critical during a trip. The scale on at least one of the maps was wrong, this part of the guide seemed to have been written for people who wanted to take tour guides. We rented a car, so this book was NOT a good choice for us. Information on how to get places, or how long it would take, was not there or not complete. Information on room rates was inaccurate. Information on restaurants was fine, but there aren't that many restaurants in those small towns anyways. In the end, we bought a good topographical map, and it was far more useful than the guidebook, since everything was incredible out there anyways.

    Daphne Durham

Audacious author Lauren Myracle accomplishes something of a literary miracle in her second young-adult novel, ttyl (Internet instant messaging shorthand for "talk to you later"), as she crafts an epistolary novel entirely out of IM transcripts between three high-school girls.

Far from being precious, the format proves perfect for accurately capturing the sweet histrionics and intimate intricacies of teenage girls. Grownups (and even teenage boys) might feel as if they've intercepted a raw feed from Girl Secret Headquarters, as the book's three protagonists--identified by their screen names "SnowAngel," "zoegirl," and "mad maddie"--tough their way through a rough-and-tumble time in high school. Conversations range from the predictable (clothes, the delicate high-school popularity ecosystem, boys, boys in French class, boys in Old Navy commercials, etc.) to the the jarringly explicit (the girls discuss female ejaculation: "some girls really do, tho. i read it in our bodies, ourselves") and the unintentionally hilarious (Maddie's IM reduction of the Christian poem "Footprints"--"oh, no, my son. no, no, no. i was carrying u, don't u c?").

But Myracle's triumph in ttyl comes in leveraging the language-stretching idiom of e-mail, text messaging, and IM. Reaching to express themselves, the girls communicate almost as much through punctuation and syntactical quirks as with words: "SnowAngel: 'cuz--drumroll, please--ROB TYLER is in my french class!!! *breathes deeply, with hand to throbbing bosom* on friday we have to do "une dialogue" together. i get to ask for a bite of his hot dog.'"

Myracle already proved her command of teenage girl-ness with Kissing Kate, but the self-imposed convention of ttyl allows a subtlety that is even more brilliant. Parents might like reading the book just to quantify how out of touch they are, but teens will love the winning, satisfyingly dramatic tale of this tumultuous trio. (Ages 13 to 17) --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

The runaway bestseller now in paperback!

An epistolary novel for the 21st century, this sharp, funny, and true-to-life breakout hit about friendship is told entirely in instant messages. And Internet-savvy teens have fallen in love with flirty Angela (SnowAngel), moody Maddie (mad maddie), and good girl Zoe (zoegirl) and their frank perceptions about a tumultuous tenth-grade semester. Now perfectly priced for its audience, the paperback is being released alongside Myracle's brand-new hardcover novel, Rhymes with Witches. AUTHOR BIO: In addition to ttyl, Lauren Myracle is the author of three other novels, including her latest, Rhymes with Witches. 5 out of 5 stars It was Ok.......2007-10-16

I thought it was a good book, even though it was insanely crappy. It's like one of those shows(hannah montanna, zoey 101) that has really crappy acting, bland plotlines and predictable conclusions, yet you secretly watch on occasion. Or record the whole series on your TiVo. Anyway, it was boringly addictive and surprisingly predictable ;-).

4 out of 5 stars This book is about commitment,.......2007-09-16

the commitment of three teenage girls to their friendship, which is tested by their various reactions to their own weaknesses. While the style of the writing is now, which would lend one to think that it won't be popular in thirty years, the teenage girls are, by and large, the same as teenage girls were when I was one thirty years ago, which makes it a classic sort of story to me. Moreover, I find similar characters, though not similar circumstances (obviously), in the writings of Jane Austen. This isn't the downfall of our culture, it's a picture of it; and it isn't just a picture of America today, it's a picture of teenage girls whenever and wherever they live.

    2 out of 5 stars Wasted potential.......2007-09-09

The potential that this book could have is so high. It's a great concept - and something that its audience can relate to. However, it barely scratches the surface of the potential that the format could have. Although it feels a bit realistic, it almost feels like there's too much energy focused on the "plot", and not enough on, you know, what people actually talk about over IM.

The ending feels rushed - not everything gets completely resolved, and it almost feels like a deux ex machina. Not a very good book.

    4 out of 5 stars Great books!!.......2007-08-17

TTYL is a great book and is really hard to put down. Even though its in IM, you can still understand it. I just finished TTFN (the 2nd book) and cant wait to see what happens to Angela, Zoe, and Maddie in the final book!! Parents seem not to like these books but they are great. Any teenage girl would love them!!

1 out of 5 stars The excitment and plot never pick up.......2007-07-23

First off, let me just say that-- and I am a bit ashamed of this fact-- I did not actually finish this book, but don't let that stop you from reading my opinion. I read almost all the way through but after I was about 3/4 of the way through it still had NOT picked up.

It starts ordinarily enough. After I was about a quarter of the way through it started to get a little annoying that not much seemed to be happening. One had a byfriend, one was a little TOO close to a teacher, and one was turning on her friends and liking her ex-enemy, a ditzy popular girl from the school. Big whoop. It sounds pretty good but I swear that's all it is. By the end a little something happens to peak the reader's interest, but it is soon lost.

After finishing prematurly I asked a friend who read it how it ended, and I was almost glad that I didn't finish. On a later date, for reference purposes, I scanned the end, I still didn't like it. The friend whom I asked for a review did like it, but she only reads about two books a year so she may just think it's a fine piece of literature (such a sad fact as she is so bright).

This is advertised as having an intriguing format; everything is written completely in IMs. This is what got me hooked at first, that and some convincing words here on amazon. But, it never occured to me that if you're going to use IMs you won't get any descriptions. Seriously, every once in a while the author throws you a bone and describes some clothing or actions or something along those lines. Some people may like using their imaginations, but all they do is talk about what they think of things. Plus, half of the converstations are, "Hey, r u there?" "Yeah, I am," and "Oops I have 2 go!" then "Goodbye!" I found this to be very wearing.

I had also read in reviews that the "author used text lingo well" okay, now let me just say, anyone who calls it text "lingo" isn't really qualified to say anything about it. But the most there is might be a properly formed and punctuation sentece with "2" or "u" instead of some other words. I mean please, I don't know any one group of three girls who would talk like that online.

So, we have established that it was boring, and the author didn't really pull me in with her good usages of "text lingo" but on top of it all I didn't like the characters. This book got so many rave reviews, several of which spoke of the indiviuality of the girls I thought they were just made opposite in a pathetic attempt to make them different, but I could still recognize the common voice of the author. It also brought to mind a question --upon seeing their strikingly different views on things such as church and relationships with varous people--: Why in the world would these girls EVER be friends?? It just made everything so unbelieveable.

I wouldn't advise ever paying for this book, at least if you're anything like myself, well maybe if you had unlimited cash you could.... If you really want to read this get it from a local library. I'm sure, having gotten so many good reviews there must be some aspect of it that is alluring to some people, but certainly not for me. Now thanks for reading my rant, but if you want to read a book with an interesting format try The Murder of Bindy Mackenzie, it was a better book in just so many ways.

5 out of 5 stars Camp Confidential is Perfect for me!.......2007-08-31

Camp Confidential books are perfect for me! I've been reading these books for almost 2 years. I have read all 16 books that have already come out and I am anxiously waiting for the 17th, and all the other Camp Confidential books Melissa J. Morgan is writing. I am really into these books and cannot wait to read all the other books. All the books are great. I loved every single book from this series. I read the book "Hide and Shreik" in only 2 days. I was so into it! I really reccomend these books to other girls like me. They will love them!!

My daughter loves Camp Confidential books. She has read all 16 books and is waiting for the next ones to come out. She is always ancious when a new book comes out, and she is always on the computer trying to see when new books come out. She can't wait for the next books!

4 out of 5 stars Student Choice Book Review.......2007-01-22

For these girls, middle school will be a new experience! Jenna, Alex, Grace, and Natalie all went to Camp Lakeview during the summer and stayed in bunk 3c. When they return home from camp, school will begin in a couple of days and they will all have to face the middle school world of boys, drama, friend trouble, school sports, clubs, parents, and a tremendous amount of homework. After every experience they go through, each girl goes to the camp cite and emails each other on what happened or even advice. During the school year, the camp girls find out that their friend named Chelsea's dad is sick. The girls realize how thankful they are to have caring parents and decide to show how much they love Chelsea and her family. I recommend this book to middle school girls, who love boys, shopping, and school.

One reason why I recommend this book is because you can relate to the characters and their problems. For example, Alex gets hurt during her soccer game and has to go to school with crouches. Also, when Grace lies to her parents saying that she wasn't gong to join the drama club at her school, I have lied to my parents about joining a club after school. Last, when Natalie has trouble agreeing with her best friend on what they should do as friends. The author did an excellent job in making sure that the reader can relate to the character's problems.

Another reason why I recommend this book is because the characters are faced with a variety of setbacks that some children have to overcome. Like when Jenna's parents get a divorce and she has to go to her dad's house every weekend. In addition when Grace has a difficult time reading and is scared to open up to her best friend. Finally, Natalie has trouble dealing with a jealous friend. After reading this book I can use the steps that the characters used to help me solve some of my problems.

The last reason why I recommend this book is because it has several morals that you can use in everyday life. For example, when Jenna lies to her parents about getting sick, you can learn just to be truthful with your parents. Also, when Alex gets picked on by the other varsity soccer players, you can conclude to always keep your head up and ignore the bad things that people say. Last, since Grace isn't a very good reader and decides to ask her friend for help. You can acquire that you should always speak up and say that you need help doing something.

I recommend this book to middle school girls who love boys, shopping, and school. I recommend this book because you can relate to the characters and their problems, the characters are faced with a variety of setbacks that most children have to overcome, and it has several morals that you can use in everyday life. I believe that the author did a wonderful job writing this book and that every middle school girl should read it.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for 10 year old girls.......2007-01-05

My 10 year old daughter loves this series. She has read all 12 books, and is anxiously waiting for more to be released. I highly recommend this for girls who like to read about real life social situations.

    5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-04-24

I am just like the girls in 3C. I really miss camp. So i read these books all the time.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book!.......2007-03-10

I thought this was a great book. I liked how the author had more than one character with their own specific problem. Also I liked how the setting of this book is at the beginning of school when the four girls have gotten back from camp. My favorite character was Alex. I liked her because she loves soccer and even though the coach said she wouldn't be able to play much she still stuck with the game. In the end it really turned out great because she found her strength and now she gets to play a lot more. My least favorite characters would have to be Jenna and Grace because they both went against there parents wishes. Jenna doesn't want to go to her dads every weekend and miss all the parties so she pretends to be sick and sneaks out of her mom's house and in the end gets caught. Although it did turn out pretty good because her mom made a deal that they were aloud to stay home one weekend a month. Grace on the other hand went against her parents in a different way. Her mom and dad told her that she was not aloud to participate in drama club until her grades go up and Grace got a little mad. So she decided that she was going to do both, keep her grades up and go to drama club without her parents knowing. Well, that kind of backfired and her teacher told on her. But, just like Jenna, her parents make her a deal. If she keeps her grades up she is aloud to stay in drama club. There is one more character though that doesn't really have a problem that ties in with anyone else's. Natalie's problem is that she likes two guys and her best friend thinks if Natalie gets a boy friend they won't be as close as before. But Natalie tells her that if she gets a boyfriend there will always be room for her in her life and she'll need a best friend to help her pick out fits for a date. My favorite thing that happened in this book is when Alex finally gets to play in a soccer game. I liked this part because she worked hard and she didn't quit and it teaches you a lesson that you have to work hard to get something you want. This was an amazing book and I don't think I would change anything about it.

        Book Description

A special two-book set exclusively available to Amazon.com customers: Lauren Myracle's bestselling novels told in instant messaging, ttfn and ttyl.

The runaway bestseller now in paperback! The first novel told entirely in instant messages!

Lauren Myracle follows the friendship of three fifteen-year-old girls-Angela (SnowAngel), Maddie (mad maddie), and Zoe (zoegirl)-through the roller coaster ride of tenth grade, with its boy temptation, donut runs, driving lessons, math torture, and queen bee encounters. The winsome threesome handles it all...then life suddenly jumps the tracks. A jerky boy sends peppy Angela into the dumps. Tough Maddie makes a mistake that has the whole school talking. And good girl Zoe ends up in over her head with a flirty teacher. Just when they need one another most, their friendship seems ready to fall apart.

The distinctive voices of the three girls, as captured in their IMs, give this novel authenticity and heart. It's an epistolary novel for the twenty-first century, from the keyboard of an author whose work has been called "enchanting...uplifting" (VOYA), "unusually candid" (Publishers Weekly), and "insightful" (The Denver Post).

Sequel to the New York Times best-seller ttyl.

This sequel to the breakout bestseller, ttyl (a novel told entirely in instant messages), follows Maddie, Zoe, and Angela through their next year in high school, 11th grade. There's trouble and lots of IMs ahead for the Winsome Threesome.

Angela has just found out that her family is moving to El Cerrito, California, and she seriously doesn't know how she'll survive without her best friends. Maddie makes some really bad moves with Clive, a pot-smoking hipster who wants to be "friends with benefits." And Zoe finds herself falling for Doug, the sweet poet who has had a crush on Angela forever, a crush that Angela has come to count on.

Lauren Myracle has concocted another funny, touching look at the rocky road of real friendship--bumpy, nutty, and marshmallow-sweet.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Books, Great Price!.......2007-01-18

My daughter fell in love with these books at a local bookstore. They are the perfect "teen" reading. When I checked Amazon, I found them to be in a bundle pack at a very good bargain price. One was paperback, the other hardback, so the price was better than anything a local bookseller could offer, even with a coupon.

5 out of 5 stars Two pack TTFN and TTYL books.......2007-01-10

These books were received in brand new condition and I paid less than the price of buying in a bookstore, including shipping.
