Not that inciteful.......2007-03-11
Unless you know absolutely nothing about Italy this book isn't that helpful. It says at nauseum that the Italians are loyal to their friends and family. The assumption is that if you are from an English speaking country you aren't. It is also biased against southern Italy. It assumes that the people buying the book are only going to Milan, and are married men with kids. I think for the money you can buy another book that is more thorough. It only took me two hours to read this book, and for what I got out of it it wasn't worth it. This book was written by a British author, I recommend buying a book by an American author if you are American because the British and American cultures are not identical.
Book Description
Whether you're conducting business, traveling for pleasure, or even relocating abroad, one mistake with customs or etiquette can leave a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Newly updated, redesigned, and resized for maximum shelf appeal for travelers of all ages, Culture Shock! country and city guides make up the most complete reference series for customs and etiquette you can find. These are not just travel guides; these are guides for a way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for what it is, a primer on Italian culture for the first time visitor.......2006-06-12
I found this book to be very useful during my first and second trips to Italy. This book is designed for those that are new to Italian travel. If you have been to Italy a few times before, this book will not add much to your knowledge of the people and the place. However, if you are embarking on your first trip to Italy this book does offer insight into the underlying ideas behind the Italian culture.
The section on body language and hand gestures is particularly useful to those that are new to Italy. Also the section on driving will be enlightening for those that have not gotten behind the wheel in Italy before.
The authors also discuss some of the interesting notions of when businesses open and close that American's find odd at first. Mealtime is also something that is very different from what we are accustomed to in America. Knowing ahead of time that meals are lengthy extended opportunities to socialize helped this American to not be frustrated during my first 3-hour meal.
Bottom line, if you will be making your first pleasure trip to Italy, this book does offer some insight into what is considered typical in the Italian culture. If you are looking for a book that will guide you in serious business travel, this is probably not the best place to start.
Shallow and lacking detail.......2003-06-01
I have read and used the other Culture Shock books and found them very useful.
This one though was almost a complete waste of time. It was full of cliches e.g. Italians love nothing more than spending time with their family and friends. It lacked detail and useful hints about how to interact with Italians.
Perhaps it suffered in comparison with "The Dark Heart of Italy" a far superior effort.
Culture Shock:Italy.......2002-06-09
I purchased this book to learn more about doing business in Italy, and I found there was not enough detail. I did learn how vastly different each region is in Italy - - and the author tries to show the differences in each region. Perhaps this is why I felt that it didn't do a deep dive into the regions I was most interested in.
I was very disappointed.......2001-12-02
After reading the "Culture Shock" books for Germany, Sweden, and France for trips, I was extremely disappointed with this book. It is basically a history book and gave me no real idea how to relate to Italians. Therefore, my experience in Italy was less than good. I highly recommend the France book---it is right on target and I had a great time navigating the culture.
An interesting book to borrow from the library.......2001-04-29
I spent last summer studying in Italy and thought it would be a good idea to purchase this book, and I would also read other books in this series if I was going to go to another country. I found it interesting, although much of the information can also be found in the beginning sections of guidebooks. Basic history and cultural information is included. The book does a nice job explaining the art of dining and drinking in Italy, which most tourists don't realize is quite different than in the United States. It also talks about how Italians act and view life. All of the information is interesting, I wouldn't say that it is a must for anyone traveling to Italy, a good guidebook should tell you the same information. If you are a little nervous about going to Italy and would like to try to be "in the know" about the Italian way of life, check the book out of the library and save your money for a gelato.

Book Description
The Absence of Grace is a study of male fantasy, representation anxiety, and narratorial authority in two sixteenth-century books, Baldassare Castiglione’s Il libro del Cortegiano (1528) and Giovanni Della Casa’s Galateo (1558). The interpretive method is a form of close reading the author describes as reconstructed old New Criticism, that is, close reading conditioned by an interest in and analysis of the historical changes reflected in the text. The book focuses on the way the Courtier and Galateo cope with and represent the interaction between changes of elite culture and the changing construction of masculine identity in early modern Europe. More specifically, it connects questions of male fantasy and masculine identity to questions about the authority and reliability of narrators, and shows how these questions surface in narratorial attitudes toward socioeconomic rank or class, political power, and gender.
The book is in three parts. Part One examines a distinction and correlation the Courtier establishes between two key terms, (1) sprezzatura, defined as a behavioral skill intended to simulate the attributes of (2) grazia, understood as the grace and privileges of noble birth. Because sprezzatura is negatively conceptualized as the absence of grace it generates anxiety and suspicion in performers and observers alike. In order to suggest how the binary opposition between these terms affected the discourse of manners, the author singles out the titular episode of Galateo, an anecdote about table manners, which he reads closely and then sets in its historical perspective. Part Two takes up the question of sprezzatura in the gender debate that develops in Book 3 of the Courtier, and Part Three explores in detail the characterization of the two narrators in the Courtier and Galateo, who are represented as unreliable and an object of parody or critique.

Passport Italy- a useful book for some travelers.......2007-07-18
I think this book was helpful regarding some of the cultural differences between how Italians and other cultures might do business. I think it could be very helpful to business persons doing work overseas. I don't think it's necessary reading for a tourist/traveler.

Veiled Visions: The 1906 Atlanta Race Riot and the Reshaping of American Race Relations
-
Digging to America
ASIN: 1578602688 |
Book Description
In September 1906, triggered by sensational newspaper accounts accusing black men of sexually assaulting white women, Atlanta’s simmering racial tension exploded. Over four days of rioting, mobs of violent whites killed at least 10 blacks, looted black-owned businesses, and ransacked homes and neighborhoods. In the days immediately following the riot, black and white leaders came together in an unprecedented move, setting the stage for Atlanta’s emergence as the “city too busy to hate” decades later. But while their business-first attitude may have quelled the most overt rhetoric and raging violence, it also reinforced class prejudices that existed in both the black and white communities.
Released on the 100-year anniversary of the riots, Rage in the Gate City provides a compelling narrative of the events during the month that shaped Atlanta and explores questions of race and class prejudice that are as relevant today as they were a century ago.
Customer Reviews:
Rage in the Gate City.......2006-11-17
Compelling story of a complex and little known chapter in race relations in the South... and a fascinating look at 1906 Atlanta. "Rage in the Gate City" is wonderfully written, carefully researched and surprisingly shocking in its depiction of an eruption of racial hatred fanned by the city press.
It's an often painful look at a brutal series of riots, when whites killed dozens of blacks in retaliation for events that appear to have been widely misunderstood, and then sensationalized in the day's newspapers.
Nevertheless, the story is told with real sensitivity and respect. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys a dramatic narrative and a meaningful look at a powerful moment in history.

Book Description
The year 1839 witnessed the first appearance in south-west Wales of Rebecca, the popular but mythical heroine, with her flowing robes and splenid white horse. Marking the anniversary of this colorful episode in modern British social history, this book employs a wealth of new documentary and
statistical evidence to describe Rebecca's children--the peasantry of Wales--and the hundreds of riots and illegal acts which they ccarried out in her name. Jones also sets the riots in the wider context of a changing rural society, examining the economy, poverty, family life, popular culture,
social attitudes, crime, and politics of mid-nineteenth-century Wales.
