Great Resource.......2006-04-21
My husband and I travel and live all over Asia and we love the Insight Guides and the DK guides. When we first started traveling we would buy the lonely planet and the insight or DK guide. But we found that we never used the lonely planet. We found it was far too detailed and had out of the way places that we weren't interested in. The Insight guides sift through all of the sights and show the best ones. We have never been disappointed with the information in the guides. While we were living in the countries and traveling veraciously we still didn't have time to visit all of the places in the Insight guide. The Insight guides have all the highlights are enjoyable to read and provide enough details for us to make all the hotel and flight reservations. The Insight Guides have well-researched and accessible history and culture sections. When we move we always buy a guide for our family to read so they have a better understanding of where we live and always enjoy the colorful pictures and well-written articles.

I've bought bought many Insight Guides through the years, and this one runs true to form--lavishly illustrated, chock full of information on the history, culture and people of Korea. As others mention, these guides are not good for hotel and restaurant information, but they're not intended to be--in fact, you may not even want to carry it along on the trip. But for research they're indispensible. A note: I have not gone to Korea but used this book in an English class for adult Korean students. They gave it a big thumbs up, said it "has everything." They would know!

Beautiful pictures, good cultural info at the beginning, a little thin on the actual information on places, which I assume what a traveller/ tourist needs most, right after a willingness to see new things and meet new people.

If you are planning your first holiday in Korea and look for a compact, well organized and illustrated travel guide, take this one into consideration. It is being kept up to date and contains all the major and minor attractions that Koreans would tell you you should not miss. Addresses, maps, some background information on food, arts, religion etc., everything is ordered into seperate chapters and really "at your fingertips"; the main part of the book naturally covers locations of interest.
If you are interested in a better understanding of Korea's highest treasure, it's people, this is not the guide's purpose and it can only serve as an introduction. In this case you should for example go for D.N. Clark's "culture and customs" or D.M. Hoffman's "Lanterns on the river".

Great travel guide.......2001-07-08
I read the history background like a novel. The cultural information such as the drama, the dances, the religion, the art etc. is great. The photos are great too. I am back from Bali and I just take this book with me.
Insight Guide Bali.......2000-04-01
Insight Guide Bali is an exceptional travel guide. The history is well written and rich with interesting facts. I reads like a good novel. The maps are deteiled with plenty of cross references. There are plenty of travel tips from riding a bus to how to order food without MSGS. It appears that every possible travel issue has been addressed; from how not to get arrested to finding the swank resorts. The book is worth the price just for the exquisite pictures. I have never seen a travel book with photos as exceptional as these. Usually I purchase a couple of guide books before going to a new location, but this time I will only use the Insight Guide Bali.

A Must-read for Those Who Wanting Inside Info.......2006-08-01
Beside many detailed maps and interesting photos, this book also contains wonderful essays showing the authors' "inside" knowledge of Taiwan's history and culture, apparently written by expat residents who have lived in Taiwan for many years.
Information such as hiking excursions or setting up a cell phone account is very useful, but the book will benefit from a lot more Chinese characters and more tone markings of the Chinese language.
Good Photos, but Insufferably Inadequate Travel Guide.......2004-10-07
Although the photographs are brilliant, and the descriptions of Taiwan's more famous sights are interesting; the practical travel necessities are sorely lacking.
There is hardly any mention of the means to arrive at the locations illustrated in the book, and relevant information regarding cities or transportation is nonexistent.
If one is looking for a book simply to admire Taiwan through photos and occassionally insightful prose, Insight Guide Taiwan is an adequate choice. However, speaking from experience, for helpful travel information, stick with Lonely Planet.
Misrepresentation of Taiwanese.......2004-01-07
I think this book has great photos and perhaps the places are well known...but it needs to present both Mandarin and Taiwanese pronunciations because BOTH languages are widely used in Taiwan. The author apparently has been misinformed...and brainwashed by the Nationalist Party and KMT's textbook version of who the Taiwanese are. It treats Taiwanese as just ethnic "Chinese" and fails to discuss the DUAL ancestral heritage of the Taiwanese. It fails to discuss that the Hoklo (Hokkien)and Hakka who came to Taiwan and intermarried with women of the then existing Lowland Aboriginal peoples (pingpu) who lived over much of western Taiwan. It also fails to acknowledge even 100% pure aboriginal households who were forced to assimilate into the Hoklo culture from Fujian during Cheng-Kung's time. Like I said...Dual Ancestry. Check out DNA studies by George Mackay...and a brochure from US called "The Taiwanese Americans".
The book does mention Taiwanese Aboriginal peoples such as Paiwan and Atayal...but these are the Highland and Mountain Aboriginal tribes.
This book also states that "Min-nan-hua" is the more "correct" way to refer to "Taiwanese Language". Taiwanese language is derived from the "Hokkien" Language of Fujian Province, yes. However, Min-nan-hua includes another variation called "Teochiu, or Chaozhou hua" which is different. So Min-nan-hua is more broad...whereas "Hokkien" is narrowed down further...and is most similar to Taiwanese outside of Taiwan. Then again, "Hokkien" actually refers to "Fujian" and the people/culture/speakers of "Hokkien" are called "Hoklos".
Beautiful.......2003-10-12
The keyword for this guide is photos. It's packed with full-color photos on almost every page. It seems almost like a National Geographic magazine. In fact, this is why I like this guide. It also has a lot of information about the culture, history, and people of Taiwan in the first half of the book. The second half is dedicated to an overview of the major cities and sights in Taiwan. Again, these are well illustrated with full-color photos on almost every page.
This guidebook has a few bad points though. The section on hotels and restaurants is very weak. You could probably find more information at the information counter at the airport. Also, the maps are a bit difficult to read. And finally, the transportation information is entirely inadequate. It doesn't tell you how to get around the country at all. For me, this is the weakest point. I feel uncomfortable traveling with this kind of guidebook.
I don't recommend using this as your primary guidebook. I do recommend this as a secondary guide though. It can help you choose destinations because it has a lot of full-color photos and also the culture section is excellent. I think this book is especially good for armchair travelers.
Read this detailed intro to the country before you go........2003-01-28
I bought this book from Amazon and read it before my recent (first) trip to Taiwan. It provided an outstanding introduction that helped me to understand the country's people, culture, and history. Over half the book is real text, as opposed to the simple lists of attractions, hotels, and restaurants that dominate most guide books. Plan to spend several hours reading the book before your trip; you will not be disappointed. I got a lot more out of my trip because I understood what I was looking at.
I also used the book's short reference section to help me choose hotels, and the advice was on target. In addition, the maps and photos are uncommonly good.
Weaknesses are few. The book's descriptions of individual attractions, restaurants, & hotels (to help you decide whether to go) are too concise. Its inconsistent use of English spellings of Chinese words -- with no pronunciations given -- was a nuisance.
I travel a lot and have bought a number of guide books to various countries and cities. More guide books should be written like this one: really helping you to know the place, and appreciate what you are experiencing, instead of just telling you "go here and then go there". I'll buy more of this series, because it added value to my trip.

A very helpful tome of what to do and what not to do in East Asia. It came in really handy when I visited the larger cities, but gave me special insight on the smaller ones as well.

Finally found a travel guide to Taiwan, and it is fantastic!.......2002-01-06
After combing the major bookstores in the Metro Detroit area, there are no travel guides to be found on Taiwan, until I found this one, and it is fantastic!
Why not, it is from the Discovery Channel people!
I did find only one other guide on Taiwan, but nowhere near the quality of this one.
I had bought a guide on St. Petersburg, Russia from the DK company, and I loved it. But most of the well known companies like DK, Fodor, Knoff, I don't believe publish one on Taiwan.
I am glad that the Insight people did, I am thourougly impressed. I will check them out from now on, when looking for travel guides for other countries!

The prospective traveler to Oman and the United Arab Emirates could hardly do better than to choose this title. Its main rival is surely going to be the Lonely Planet guide, which is certainly cheaper. But money isn't everything when it comes to value. This Insight Guide is more focused in the area it reviews (only 2 countries compared with LP's 6) and has the sort of graphics that usable soft-cover guides - as opposed to wrist crunching stay-at-home tomes - can usually only dream of. So: pictures to whet your appetite, enough text to provide historical and social context for the prospective visitor. But: most important of all - does it work? Can you navigate the souk in Dubai or the sand dunes of Oman armed only with the Insight Guide? Within the confines of its 318 pages, the answer has to be yes. You won't find detailed maps in here to mount a major expedition, but the helpfully colour indexed Travel tips at the back of the book provide just the sort of information that the practical traveler will need. A lovely piece of work, Insight Guides. If you're thinking of breaking a journey, or going for a longer stay, in either Oman or the UAE this book will be a useful preparation, a handy source of facts nd an attractive souvenir.
