Customer Reviews:
Better than a guidbook - and easier to carry!.......2007-03-30
I don't think I'd go to a new vacation city without the MapEasy Guidemap. I've used them in Seattle, San Fran and now San Diego. They've helped me find interesting places to visit, tasty food and even parking!
Specific details of popular areas.......2002-08-27
This Mapeasy shows the tourist where things are in the tourist-visited areas. It is not intended to help you find your way if you are lost, though the major routes are there. It has a detail of Downtown La Jolla, downtown San Diego, and Balboa park, with a blow-by-blow of all the shops and restaurants on Prospect and some the streets that head inland. This is the clearest rendering of Balboa Park I have seen yet and I have several other current San Diego travel helps.
It is made of a plastic material that is more durable than paper.
It is worth the current $6.95 amazon price.
MapEasy's Guidemap to San Diego.......2000-04-12

Lisa Carver is America's horniest optimist. With Dancing Queen she writes an ode to all things that make her pants itch, whether it's a visit to the gynecologist, a look at Lawrence Welk's helmet-haired backup singers, or the pulsing of Fabio's surreal pecs. In essays entitled "Other Ladies' Bodies," "In Favor of Underwear," and "The Manifest Destiny of Anna Nicole Smith" she articulates self-consciously white-trash erotics drawn from images of America's popular culture. If you've enjoyed her self-produced zine, Rollerderby, you won't want to miss this, her first book; and if you've yet to discover her zine work, Dancing Queen serves as the perfect introduction to this self-proclaimed leader of "Generation L."
Customer Reviews:
This book changed my life!!.......2006-12-19
Ask people what books have changed their lives and you're likely to get a whole bunch of sheep extoling the virtues of Tuesdays with Morrie, or something equally sad and boring with an obvious "moral of the story".
Well, to hell with that mundane, depressing business-in the words of the Bee Gees, you should be dancing! Dancing Queen is a joyous testament to really LIVING life. Lisa's wild, adventurous tales are hilarious and inspiring. Lisa breaks down preconcieved notions and societal norms to reveal an world teeming with delicious possibilities. As Carver herself said, Dancing Queen is a book about having fun. And what fun it is!
Another jewel from Lisa!.......2006-12-07
This book cracked me up, like most of what Lisa Carver writes. Her social commentary on the oddities of America, such as Tonya Harding (who she refers to as the "rat fink" hahaha) and Anna Nicole Smith, and much more, are so entertaining. Lisa has a true zest for life and fascination with all things bizarre, that are commonly accepted in our society. She calls attention and pays tribute to things that most people allow to slip past their consciousness, but actually merit some evaluation. Lisa's evaluation of the world, is in fact very unique and amusing. Her outlook is very specific to her own energetic mind, while also addressing things that we can all relate to, if we actually took the time to acknowledge the other side of our perspectives on things. She takes a different path and it's lovely! Her writing is addicting. Her voice is infectious, and I need to be quarantined with it!
The Service Was Good, But the Book Sucked, IMO.......2005-09-26
My 1 Star Rating is strictly about the reading material itself, NOT the condition of the book, or the service, which was all good.
I would definitely order books again through this dealer, just not anymore by Lisa Carver!
The reviews for it sounded like some fun reading, but I got bored before page 25, even, no good.
Maybe this book was a fluke, but I'm not paying 1 cent for anymore by her to find out.
There's SO MUCH treasure out there to read, no time for the drivel.
Inspirational.......2001-12-19
Lisa Carver, as a writer, makes it okay for us to embrace every part of ourselves. I think she is a better role model for teen girls that people like Brittney Spears could ever be. She understands herself, her sexuallity, and the world we live in (for the better and the worse). She takes the shame out of being poor, and encourages you to enjoy life. I could only call her inspirational.
Loving Lisa.......2001-07-27
I was late coming into touch with Lisa Carver. _Dancing Queen: A Lusty Look at the American Dream_ (Henry Holt) was published five years ago, and I didnýt know it. I got to know her writing from her uninhibited diary entries at the fine adult site Nerve.com (ýThe Community of Thoughtful Hedonistsý). So, I was glad to take a look into _Dancing Queen_ in order to understand the past of this peculiar woman. It is a slim volume of her essays on white trash, kissing, other ladiesý bodies, and more. It is enormous fun. Whatýs nice is that as different as Lisa is from anybody, she is happy and optimistic. ýIýve done lots of stupid things, but Iýve enjoyed myself. _Dancing Queen_ is about _liking_ stuff. Itýs about how pleasing it can be to be poked and probed ý by the hairdresser, by the gynecologist, by killer bears, by the thirty-six-year-old ski instructress in _Princess Daisy_.ý She is impatient with those who donýt have fun; she cannot comprehend ýa whole essay by a woman who was upset that some men hooted at her, for instance. I _like_ to be hooted!ý She gives us rants that certainly are self-indulgent, but you cannot expect anything different from someone who indulges herself with such lewdness, shamelessness, and fun.
Not only are her opinions odd, but it is obvious she enjoys getting them into words. In the chapter about her sensual enjoyment of a trip to the gynecologist (ýIt is the _illicit_ pleasure caused by _necessary_ procedures performed by _removed_ professionals that gets my temperature rising.ý), she says that a certain kind of girl likes a visit to the gynecologist as much as Christmas: ýIt only happens once a year and she gets lots of things she wants. She skips to the clinic while visions of speculums dance in her head.ý She gushes over the ghost-written novels of perfect specimen Fabio (ýHeýs always mentioning condoms in his pirate booksý) and informs us that ýThey contain bold lines like:
1. ýI am a man of the sea.ý 2. ýGo hide in the fields, woman.ý 3. ýMayhaps she thinks I am doing something bad.ýý
It was this sort of literature that fired her pre-adolescent fantasies: ýAt twelve, I had as much sex drive as the entire U.S. Army and absolutely no idea what to do with it.ý Not to worry; she has since learned. ýThey sold me a roadmap to ecstasy covered in highways of trouble, and I couldnýt wait to visit every site on the map.ý
Lisa is hilarious when discussing just a trip to the hairdresser, or K-Mart, or Olivia Newton John, but the best chapter in the book is entitled ýAn Iron Fist in a Polyester Glove: Lawrence Welk.ý What is he doing here? Well, when Lisa was little, ýTo me, the constant, ultra-close-ups of moist-lipped, moist-eyed, soft-bosomed lady singers lined up side by side in matching outfits like chickens to be plucked were an open call to perversion.ý She has since made an extensive study of Lawrenceýs several autobiographies, where she must have learned that he originally picked up an accordion and set out to conquer the world, as Lawrence Welk & His Hotsy Totsy Boys. While she doesnýt gloss over Lawrenceýs famous temper, she finds, surprisingly, a kindred spirit, someone who had a dream: ýextreme close ups of _nice_ people singing nice songs and dancing anachronistic dances against insanely cheerful backdrops. Itýs a beautiful dream!ý
This isnýt for everyone. Lisa is frank, naughty, and lustful. She throws sexual fantasies in even when discussing a sequence of post-Glasnost Russian leaders. If you like smart people who write enthusiastically well, and if you appreciate that to be peculiar is also to be interesting, this is certainly worth a look. Oh, and hot off the Lisa Diaries on Nerve.com: Lisa is trying to get pregnant again. That kid is going to have plenty to think about.

Who needs Prince Charming if you've got a rock star?
It's official. Olivia is a superfreak. Sure, she may have landed the hottest internship at an übercool TV music station. And yes, she's chilling with A-listers in London all summer. But when she meets her very first pop star, she gets caught in a revolving glass door and falls smack down on her bum -- all in one quick motion.
Luckily, Rocker Boy thinks Liv's quirks are adorable. He takes her clubbing at the hippest spots! Liv may be clumsy on solid ground, but on the dance floor she sparkles. The summer's just begun and she's already captured the spotlight -- and a celeb's heart, too. Now if only she was sure he's the right guy...
Customer Reviews:
See That Girl, Read This Book.......2006-09-30
Dancing Queen by Erin Downing is, in a word, fun.
Olivia can't wait to go to London. Not only will she be working at the hottest music television station in England, but she'll be following in the footsteps of her late mother. She brings her enthusiasm and her music knowledge - and, unfortunately, her tendency to spaz.
She hoped to be rubbing elbows with the pop elite at her new job. The first celebrity she runs into - almost literally so - is Josh Cameron, a singer who is as charming as he is famous. He is cool, calm and collected, standing upright; she is flustered, having issues with a revolving door and has fallen on her rear. She is embarrassed; he is amused. No one is more surprised than Liv when Josh keeps in touch with her and asks her out.
London life has a lot to offer Liv. She loves her job, but must work long days for a demanding boss. The small-town American girl also has to deal with her roommates: one high-maintenance girl from Texas, the other a sweet soul from Sweden. Then a VJ contest is announced at work, psyching up all of the interns. Will Olivia think of something that will get her noticed, or will her performance fall flat? When Josh finally finds the time to pencil her into his busy schedule, can she admit to him - and herself - that their relationship is headed nowhere?
Dancing Queen is filled with music references, making readers want to get up and dance. A song title is assigned to every chapter, and the title song Dancing Queen by ABBA plays a major role throughout the story. The author even created an iMix on iTunes - Erin's Dancing Queen Playlist.
If you love music -
If you wish you could work at MTV -
If you truly listen to your heart -
If you like the film What a Girl Wants -
Get Dancing Queen by Erin Downing and prepare to boogie!
fun romantic comedy on the other side of the pond.......2006-09-23
Seventeen-year-old Olivia has barely been out of her native Ann Arbor, so when she lands a summer internship in London at the hottest TV music station, she can't wait. Of course, her first day on foreign soil, she ends up knocked over by a revolving door in front of the hottest male rock star of the moment: Josh Cameron. Combined with her hah-ri-bul Texas beauty queen roommate, Liv thinks that this is not quite the auspicious start she had hoped for. But her other roommate, a sweet Swedish girl, becomes her ally, and the other interns are fun to hang out with. Plus, Liv is the assisstant to the head of the entire station. So when she and Josh meet again, and he asks her out, it's like the icing on the cake. Who wouldn't want to go clubbing and dancing with the hottest rock star at the hippest spots? But slowly, Liv realizes that Josh seems a little to phony -- and self-absorbed. As much as she loves his attention, she's not sure he's the one for her. Even if the music scene isn't your thing, this book, with great characters, a fun plot, and a great message, will be.
Thought-provoking for teens.......2006-07-21
Although the book is a fun read, the story teaches a lot about coping. This is definitely an invaluable book for teenage girls.
Dancing Queen.......2006-07-12
Liv has a summer internship in London for Music Mix where she meets celebrity Josh Cameron and the very cute London local Colin. Both boys are competing for her attention.
Dancing Queen is a fun, easy read. I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times.
The best part though is the playlist. Here's an idea for anyone who reads this: take all of the song titles from the begining of the chapters and make a cd. All except the song "You're so vain" (it makes no sense... why wouldn't he think the song is about him? it is). Have fun!
Loved the book! Laughed aloud!.......2006-06-05
This is a great book for teenage girls. The characters are amazingly well-developed following a believable story line. I was especially impressed with how well the author handled life's challenges spread out between several key characters; Downing didn't overburden the main character (Liv). An example is how Liv's roommate Anna struggled with her parents' expectations of her. I enjoyed every word and laughed aloud at times. I passed the book on to my teenage daughter and look forward to hearing her assessment of this amazing book.
A female of any age could enjoy this book, but it is especially appropriate for teenage girls who could reasonably experience 1) travel to a foreign country, 2) living with diverse people, 3) dating, 4) employment with a confusing boss, 5) questions about the future following high school, 6) uncertainty with relationships -- how best to be a friend, 7) moving beyond resentment, 8) differentiating between fantasy and reality in how we perceive others, 9) acceptance of self and others, and 10) disagreements with parents who feel they know what's best. Yup! All this and more is in the book.
This is a pleasant, fun book to read, but a person will still be touched by the characters and the situations they find themselves in. Although the book is undoubtably a light-read and at times, hilarious, it is also thought-provoking and substantial. Downing handles life's complexities in a fun, humorous way. From the main character's ability to handle difficult situations with levity, sensitivity, and penache, a young reader may gain a perspective on life and feel reassured about the uncertain years ahead.
I look forward to reading more books by this author.
Great job, Ms. Downing!

Wonderful Queen Ermalinda collects the children of many lands and brings them to her special Festival. Color Illustrations
Customer Reviews:
D A N C I N G......I N T O.....E T E R N I T Y.......2006-04-03
I had this book as a small child. The illustrations are totally beautiful, and the story is lovely too....though, at the end, is somewhat confusing.
It begins where Queen Ermalinda -- a totally beautiful blonde lady, is in the midst of preparing for the annual dance festival for her kingdom, (or is that queendom?) "...All the deserving children" in the land were given dancing lessons....and there is a lovely black and white illustration (amidst all the other, colour illustrations), wherein 8 or 9, (or maybe 10), little girl dancers are all shown in a row, in sillouette, but their tutu skirts are drawn without sillouette).
"Fat Martha" is at the piano, as they practice. (The appelation of the name "Martha" with the word "fat" stayed with me for a long time....and, years later, it took a while for me to accustom myself, years later, to a svelte, thin Martha Stewart!)
Then the Queen gets an inspiration. She wants OTHER kinds of dancing for her festival/recital. So she sets off for various countries, to gather different sorts of dancers.
She goes to China, where she convinces the sisters, "Sing Hi" and "Sing Lo", (about 9 years old), to join her. She goes to Mexico, (or another Latin American country not specified), and convinces brother and sister, "Delores" and "Emmanuelo", (about 14 and 15 years old), to go with her. Then she goes to the Deep South, where she meets "Sambo" and "Ivory", two little black boys,(who seem about 8 years old, and appear to be twins), who wish, "they never again had to pick cotton" to join her. (It is true that all of these children may be stereotypes of their countries and dancing...but they are all presented in a sympathetic manner, and, to me at least, seemed real people, with real problems.) All of these children appear to be orphans. as no parents, (or guardians either), are ever mentioned.
At the end, Queen Ermalinda takes these new dance acts back with her. They are a great success at the royal dance recital....but they then remain with her, in "her kingdom in the sky". This is where the confusion started, (and continues to this day), in my mind. Up until the very last page, it seems that Queen Ermalinda ruled over a fictitious kingdom -- never named -- but quite certainly suposed to be a very real area, and on Earth. Then, on the last page, (in fact, in the last sentence), these new dancers, (and all others), are taken up by
Queen Ermalinda into her "kingdom in the sky". Is this a reference to the Christian concept of the "Second Coming"? I don't think so....because they all went to a "kingdom in the sky", not returning to Earth. Is Queen Ermalinda, then, a benevolent angel of death? It sure didn't seem so, until that last page and last sentence. I am sure that the authoress, Ruby Finst, knew why she ended the book this way....but for me, (and I believe many, many of her other child -- and adult -- readers), it's a real surprise ending...with no explainations for it at all.
The beautiful colour drawings in this book are all lithographs. The book is oddly-shaped, much wider than it is
tall. It is a true treasure, and I only wish I had not thrown out my own copy years ago, in a vain attempt to clean my room. (As a brunette, I also had colored over the Queen's beautiful blonde hair, and made it black). The book remains as a true work of art, both in words and pictures, and if you can buy a copy, (I've seen them from $69 on Amazon, to over $200 in other places), I'd avise you to do so, and add this undoubtedly beautiuful classic to your personal library. But the story -- at least the last page of it -- remains, to me at least, "a puzzlement".
