3 out of 5 stars A little disappointed.......2007-05-12

I was a little disappointed by this map. I had purchased the Madrid, Spain one a few years back as was so impressed by it. It was handier and more accurate than some of the travel books in the bookstore. But Paris wasn't as useful. It didn't tell us much of what we were interested in for a city with so much history and culture. It is better suited for those more interested in the fashion and shopping Paris has to offer rather than seeing the sights.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide to carry around Paris!.......2002-10-17

This is a great little travel guide! The small size (about 5 ½" x 4"x 1/2") is perfect to just throw in your bag and go. One side of the book contains laminated maps of the Touileries-Louvre and Les Halles areas that pull out to reveal small maps of the rest of Paris. They are very small, but very detailed (and show the Metro stops). The spine of the book has a compass that pops up if you need to get your bearings.

The second side of the book has brief descriptions of the sites, restaurants, etc. I found the restaurant section especially helpful since my travel companion was a vegetarian and this guide had the only listing for a vegetarian restaurant (none of my other guides had any).

Don't only purchase this guide though. Although it's a good guide to carry around with you while in Paris (and you won't stick out as a tourist trying open and read unwieldy maps), there isn't a lot of detail on the sites. I would recommend purchasing this and the Eyewitness Guide to Paris, which is very detailed (but heavy!)

The only thing the guide is conspicuously lacking is a map of the Metro system, which would have been very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to Living in Paris.......2005-12-07

I have had various editions of Paris Inside Out since it was mailed to me as an incoming freshman at The American University of Paris in 1997. David Applefield, a former AUP professor, provides invaluable "insider" information about every possible subject. He tells you where the only post office is in Paris that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. He tells you what oddities to look out for when you are on the metro, including a sign that shows EXACTLY where the Bastille was (as opposed to the column at Bastille that is several hundred feet above ground and thus not highly accurate). He gives you helpful terms for dealing with people at the Post Office, and explains the French mentality to you. He tells you about the all-night buses, the cheapest places to eat in Paris, when the best museums are free, etc.

Basically, this book is knowledge you would acquire yourself after living in Paris for a few years. And some of it is already out of date (notably the reference about how long it takes a non-EU citizen to acquire EU citizenship after marriage). I would highly recommend this to college students coming to Paris, or to people moving to Paris for work.

5 out of 5 stars Useful For Tourists, Too.......2004-09-19

Paris Inside Out is written for people who intend to live in Paris, either permanenetly or for a while. Much of the information is of use to tourists, too - at least, tourists who want to do more than just see the top ten sights in Paris. As one other reviewer noted, the book is written for an American audience, and consequently some of the discussion (such as the political and social differences between France and the U.S.) may not be entirely relevant to non-Americans.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Advice For Living In France.......2003-12-28

Having moved to Paris from the States myself, I rate "Paris Inside Out" as one of the two most helpful books on my bookshelf. The other would be Polly Platt's "French Or Foe?" Platt's book gave me vital information on understanding French culture and how things work here in general. Applefield's book gave me technical information on how things work specifically - laws, processes, names, addresses, etc. I have read it countless times and still continue to refer to it even now that I'm well settled.

I especially appreciated Applefield's attitude on moving to France. Whereas other books I've read have been pessimistic (or completely dismissive) about the chances of Americans finding work in Paris, Applefield remains positive. He explains the obstacles involved, then brainstorms up a multitude of ways that it could be possible. Other books might take a tone of exasperation when talking about dealing with French bureauocracy or laws, but Applefield greets them with determined enthusiasm. Anything is possible so long as you understand how things work and keep the right attitude. Applefield has the right attitude and it easily rubs off on you.

This book also goes beyond other books in that explains more than just how to rent an apartment and get the telephone plugged in. His "insider tips" teach you how to get plugged into Parisian life, as well. He gives you pointers on finding the Paris arts scene, sports scene, French language schools, cooking classes, and a number of other things that help you build your new life here.

The book has only a couple of minor shortcomings. First, even though this Sixth Edition was completely revised, some of the addresses and phone numbers given in it are already out of date. Applefield makes up for this, however, by keeping the website that accompanies the book (www.paris-anglo.com) more up-to-date. Definitely check the website before wandering off in search of an address.

I also found the sections on getting a visa/carte de sejour to be a good overview, but not enough specific information. The book gives lists of documents that might be requested, but little more information than this. (e.g., What should an "attestation d'hebergement" say? How much money do you need for "proof of financial resources"? What exactly do you need your insurance company to state? What's involved in the medical visit?) Applefield states that these rules and processes change too often to detail them fully in the book. However, I doubt that they change more often than any of the other specific information he gives.

Overall, if you are planning to live in France for more than a couple of weeks, "Paris Inside Out" is essential reference material and even a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Particularly recommended for its "insider" tips.......2003-01-11

Now in a completely updated and expanded sixth edition, Paris Inside Out by David Applefield (an American writer who has been living and working in Paris for almost twenty years) is a thoroughly "user friendly" and comprehensive resource for finding housing; getting a job; studying in a university, exchange program, or language school; or simply becoming immersed in French culture, society, vocabulary; arts, and cuisine. Paris Inside Out is particularly recommended for its "insider" tips for such newcomer survival skills as how to use the phones, computer and online needs, accessing health care, and even banking information. If you are planning a trip to Paris for business or pleasure, whether for a weekend, or a summer season or a year 'round adventure, then begin your planning by getting a copy of David Applefield's Paris Inside Out!

5 out of 5 stars What would I have done without it??.......2002-09-15

Let's just say, I don't even like to think what would have happened if I hadn't had this book when I moved to Paris. The format and writing makes it a pleasure to read. People ask me about living in France and I just tell them to read this book. I wish there were one like it for Strasbourg!

5 out of 5 stars Paris Inside and Out.......2000-05-22

This book is clearly written by someone who knows! Appelfield speaks to the American with a firsthand account of the French experience, and with humor to boot. Many references to websites and other materials make this book a must have, especially for the potential expat.

Ellie has started to believe she won't survive the war. Their band of eight teenage guerrillas is down to five now--Robyn and Corrie and Chris are dead, and only she and Homer and Kevin and Lee and Fi are still trying to sabotage the enemy who has taken over their country. They're growing numb and soul sick from the violence, because they've been fighting for a long time--through four previous novels, actually: John Marsden's Tomorrow: When the War Began, The Dead of Night, A Killing Frost, and Darkness Be My Friend. At the same time, they are normal teens who kid around, fall in and out of love, and think long thoughts about the meaning of life.

It is this poignant human dimension that lifts Marsden's series above the run-of-the-mill spy action novel--that and the fact that nobody is better at writing about things blowing up. And his scenes leading up to the explosion create tension so powerful it is almost unbearable to keep on reading--but impossible not to. In Burning for Revenge, the five have been abandoned in enemy territory when the New Zealand general decides that they are not valuable enough to send a rescue helicopter. Without any definite plans, they sneak into the back of a truck, only to find themselves at the end of the ride deep within the enemy's airfield. How they battle out of the situation and leave the enemy's air power in ruins makes a breathlessly exciting story that will not disappoint the many teen fans of this excellent series. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

            Book Description

The journey to Stratton isn't an easy trip, especially when the enemy's headquarters lie somewhere along the way. And that's exactly where Ellie and her friends unwittingly find themselves. With only five of them against hundreds of armed soldiers, escape seems like a suicide mission. But Stratton is where Ellie's grandmother lives, so the journey must be made -- even though the odds aren't good.

Ellie must summon all of her courage and guerrilla instincts to survive the latest high-stakes installment of the action-packed Tomorrow series.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent addition to an addictive series........2007-03-24

The Tomorrow series of books by John Marsden got me through High School (as a lucky New Zealander, I have had the books since the 1990's). I awaited every new instalment with excitement and trepidation. `Burning for Revenge' was no exception and it delivered everything I was hoping for and more. `Burning for Revenge' is a nice return to the action, gunfire and explosive situations after a more sober `Darkness Be My Friend'. One book from the Tomorrow series features a warning quote: "do not start at night". This is completely true in `Burning for Revenge' - the reader is urged on to continue reading until the last page is turned, and is left gasping for breath and reaching urgently for the next instalment.

If you have enjoyed the Tomorrow Series, be sure to catch the Ellie Chronicles ( While I Live (The Ellie Chronicles) )that continue the story of Elle after the peace settlement.

5 out of 5 stars Non Stop Action.......2005-11-01

Burning For Revenge will keep you up all night, that's for sure. There is a lot of non-stop action packed in this book, more than any of the previous books. Marsden makes you visualize the fear felt by the characters while escaping constant pursuit. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

this is the best series i have ever read. i am currently reading the other side of dawn and i am sad that i am almost finished. i have not found any books that are as great as these so i might as well just read them over and over again. i just hope there are other books as mesmerizing as these out there...

5 out of 5 stars The greatest war story/comming of age tail ever told.......2002-06-30

I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book

              Book Description

1905. From Benjamin Mathew's manuscript comes his account of the incidents of the event of the burning of Falmouth (or Portland, as the city is now called). Mathews feels constrained at this late day to tell the real story of that infamous act because of the present tendency to put the chief blame for the deed upon the head of Captain Henry Mowatt, commander of the British fleet. Several historians have already attributed to him both the origin and the execution of the cowardly destruction of Falmouth. While he was certainly the perpetrator of the dastardly crime, yet the origin of it lies with Captain Samuel Coulson. No man ought to know this better than he, for he was an inmate of the Coulson household for the space of nearly two years; and in these pages he will show that the burning of the ill-fated town was due to the spite of that notorious Tory.

                      Book Description

Devon James had been scarred beyond recognition in a fire he accidentally started in his parent's home. Blaming the fire chief, Nemo Hendricks, for not getting there in time to save his parents he vowed he would get revenge. His scarred face made it impossible for him to get a date as a teenager. Years later he decided to get back at all the girls who rejected him, seven women now in all. They were kidnapped, raped, whipped, shaved and tortured and all held or chained up against their will, this being his revenge at getting back at them. Some were left with terrible scars. Making sure none of his victims talked, Devon put a scare in them which led to certain murders. He was a vicious, nasty excuse for a human being. Devon decided kidnapping Karen Hendricks, the wife of Fire Chief Nemo Hendricks, would be his revenge, which proved to be the wrong move. She escaped after months of captivity and torture and learning about all the other women he hurt, she gets together with them and since they had learned how to take care of themselves, they capture Devon and promise him they were going to have their revenge on him, their, "Burning Revenge." Devon is put on trial for his crimes but the jury sent him to the Insane Asylum. Did he return? Read "Burning Revenge" to find out.
