Book Description
I Am the Grand Canyon is the story of the Havasupai people. From their origins among the first group of Indians to arrive in North America some 20,000 years ago to their epic struggle to regain traditional lands taken from them in the nineteenth century, the Havasupai have a long and colorful history. The story of this tiny tribe once confined to a toosmall reservation depicts a people with deep cultural ties to the land, both on their former reservation below the rim of the Grand Canyon and on the surrounding plateaus.
Customer Reviews:
Story of the Havasupai.......2007-03-01
The Havasupai people are a tribe of Native Americans who by oral tradition trace their origins back thousands of years. In some stories back to before the time that present day theory has the original people coming over the ice bridge from Asia. At any case, they have lived in the Grand Canyon area for a very long time. Their early habits were to live at the bottom of the canyon during the spring and summer, and to move to the plateau behind the South Rim during the fall and winter.
This book tells their story but concentrates on the last few hundred years. During this time first the Spanish and then the Americans came to disrupt their lives. As is often the case, the Americans wanted the Havasupai on reservations and eventually a very small (less than one square mile) reservation at the bottom of the canyon was 'given' to them. This robbed them from the use of their ancestral lands.
A major part of the book is on the struggle to retain some rights to the use of the upper lands. It was a fight against the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, the Sierra Club (all of whom had different agendas), and more.
Eventually the Havasupai won over all this opposition, and their reservation was expanded by some 185,000 acres. This book shows that a small group can win, eventually, some of the time.

Book Description
With the exception of Yosemite, the magnificent landscape of the Southwest was the favoured subject of Ansel Adams, and he visited the region frequently throughout his life. It was there, in the early 1930s, that he decided to make photography his lifes work. Included are a selection of Adams iconic images of the Southwest as well as some less well known works ranging from the Rio Grande in Texas to Death Valley in California. His photographs of the Grand Canyon are a particular focus of the book. The pictures are complemented by an introduction by Andrea Stillman and a selection of Adams vivid letters about the region.

Love this book!.......2006-11-22
First book I have looked at by Ansel Adams. There are a few Grand Canyon pictures in here and other southwest pictures. Also included are some letters he wrote.
". . . the light that comes from the mind and the heart.".......2000-11-16
The 86 black and white images in this book reflect dozens of visits by Ansel Adams to the Southwest over more than 50 years. Adams liked what he saw, and felt that "this land is offering me a tremendous opportunity; no one has really photographed it."
This volume has two weakneses. The images are often too small to accurately reproduce the detail that Adams intended us to see in the foregrounds and backgrounds, and many are over inked. Second, the introduction by William A. Turnage is not up to his usual standards. He makes a number of strange assertions such as that Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941 (poorly reproduced in this volume) is "beyond doubt, his most famous photograph." Hmmm. What do you think? In other places though, Turnage adds interesting details about Adams' introduction to the Southwest and the influence on his photography of Paul Strand.
The book contains many letters from Adams about his experiences in taking the photographs, including many near disasters with his station wagon breaking down. One of the really interesting ones is to Patsy England in 1936 in which he says that in many ways the "Carlsbad Caverns are symbolic of my life; beautiful and exquisite things that exist only in the light of the moment." That may be the finest characterization of Adams' work that I have read.
Here are my favorite images (as reproduced here) in this book:
Saint Francis Church, Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, c. 1929
Monument Valley, Arizona, 1937
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, 1942
Georgia O'Keeffe and Orville Cox, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Arizona, 1937

Grand Canyon from Yavapai Point, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, 1942
Grand Canyon from Yavapai Point (Bright Angel Canyon), Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, 1942
After you have finished reading about Ansel Adams' adventures and learning in the Southwest, I urge you to take your own driving trip through this beautiful country. Be sure to visit the spots that Adams did. I also suggest that you be sure to add Sedona in Arizona, Mesa Verde, the Meteorite Crater in Arizona, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen West in Scottsdale, and the Navajo reservation to the areas depicted here.
See the most beautiful places you can as often as possible! The beauty will seep into your soul.

What a bargain for such a beautiful little book.......2002-04-30
This is the perfect book for anyone who loves the Grand Canyon. Not only do you get gorgeous photos and historic shots of the 1905 El Tovar hotel, but there's more on Mary Jane Colter's Grand Canyon work and a chapter on the park. This is a perfect stocking stuffer or very reasonable little gift for someone heading to the canyon for a honeymoon or anniversary!
Book Description
In 1923, America paid close attention, via special radio broadcasts, newspaper headlines, and cover stories in popular magazines, as a government party descended the Colorado to survey Grand Canyon. Fifty years after John Wesley Powell's journey, the canyon still had an aura of mystery and extreme danger. At one point, the party was thought lost in a flood.
Something important besides adventure was going on. Led by Claude Birdseye and including colorful characters such as early river-runner Emery Kolb, popular writer Lewis Freeman, and hydraulic engineer Eugene La Rue, the expedition not only made the first accurate survey of the river gorge but sought to decide the canyon's fate. The primary goal was to determine the best places to dam the Grand. With Boulder Dam not yet built, the USGS, especially La Rue, contested with the Bureau of Reclamation over how best to develop the Colorado River. The survey party played a major role in what was known and thought about Grand Canyon.
The authors weave a narrative from the party's firsthand accounts and frame it with a thorough history of water politics and development and the Colorado River. The recommended dams were not built, but the survey both provided base data that stood the test of time and helped define Grand Canyon in the popular imagination.

the exploration opening up the Colorado River as a chief water supply and popular tourist area.......2007-09-10
Diaries and letters of 10 of the 12 men in the 1923 U.S. Geological Survey to obtain detailed and useful information on the Colorado River including the Grand Canyon stretch make the "backbone" of the book. The 12 men included a variety with particular knowledge and skills to accomplish the purposes of the expedition. Among them were a hydraulic engineer, a photographer, a writer, and topologists and geologists. The main aim was study of the River for favorable places to build dams to supply water to the fast-growing Western states, especially California with its large agricultural areas, and make the area suitable for additional development and tourism.
Though the locations for dams recommended by the 1923 Expedition were not accepted, its findings were used to determine locations where dams were built, notably Hoover Dam. The publicity given to the Expedition, in the periodical Scientific American for example, and appearances and writings by several of its members brought national attention to the large, unique natural area about which little was previously known despite previous explorations and expeditions going back to the first half of the 1800s. The Grand Canyon has since become a popular tourist area.
The format of much of the book is to follow the progress and varied work of the Expedition by excerpts from its members' diaries and letters covering the same day or short period of time. Background on the Expedition and its aftermath are provided in surrounding chapters by the coauthors, both of whom have done much work and writing relating to the region's natural environment.
Book Description
This meticulously researched and lavishly illustrated volume presents the story of the stagecoach line that opened the Grand Canyon to the world and made Flagstaff, Arizona the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. From 1892 until the close of the 1900 season, the coaches rolled out every summer for a seventy-mile trip that was taken by hundreds, who could scarcely believe what they saw at journey's end. In the 100 years since then, many of the old roads and landmarks have disappeared, only to be re-discovered by the Mangums. More than a history, this book is an exploration guide, with detailed maps and descriptions that guide readers by car, bike and foot along the famous old stagecoach routes and points of interest.

All the World's a Stage.......2006-05-26
Towns and regions are fortunate if they have a local historian who devotes years to researching and writing their history. Northern Arizona is fortunate to have Richard and Sherry Mangum, who grew up here and have a strong personal interest in and enthusiasm for the region. In this book they've brought to light a fascinating part of Grand Canyon history that barely gets mentioned in other history books. This book is more than just a history of the stage coach line between Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. It's a great history of Grand Canyon pioneers, the first whites to live at the canyon and open up tourism there. It includes lively characters like John Hance and Pete Berry and Ralph Cameron. Some readers may be surprised to find that the first tourist facilities at the canyon weren't at the current south rim village but at the Grandview area, where there were several hotels and other facilities. The stage coach line may have been brief in duration but it did intoduce the world to the Grand Canyon, bringing up famous writers like John Stoddard, Charles Lummis, and Harriet Monroe, whose reports helped shape public interest in and perceptions of the Grand Canyon. The stage line also turned John Hance into a legendary character. The stage line itself quickly became famous, showing up in Baedeker guide books. It's a bit surprising, then, that it should be thoroughly forgotten. The Mangums have brought this story back to life, digging into obscure sources and puzzling out the missing links in the story. They've also assembled a gallery of seldom-seen photos, such as one with John Hance and Thomas Moran and a donkey. The book offers a portrait of Flagstaff in the 1890s, and details the building of the stage road and the way-stations along the way. For today's explorers, the book offers detailed maps of the old stage route, much of which can be followed today. The book closes with two sections on early bicycling to the canyon, and the arrival of the automobile age. This is a unique and rich contribution to Grand Canyon history.

This book is great!!!.......2007-02-16
This book is my second favorite! It's great!!!I love Mandie books because they have Bible verses in them, they take place in my favorite time period(early nineteen hundreds)and most of all they are very interesting! My favorite part in this book is when Mandie and Johnathan are crossing a roof four floors high and Mandie falls!I don't want to tell you any more because I want you to be suprised when you read it.Thank you SO much Mrs.(Miss)Leppard for writing such wonderfull books! They are better than American Girl mysteries!

The best Mandie book ever!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-02-14
I thought that this book is the best Mandie book!!!! I really enjoyed learning about Switzerland. I think that Mrs. Leppard did a good job of describing the landscape it sounded really pretty. She also did a good job of developeing the mystery I couldn't put it down!!!!!!!!!!!!You should defenitly read this book!!!!!!!
cool.......2005-08-13
THE LOVELY COVER TELLS THE LOVELY STORY. THERE ARE NO BOOKS LIKE MANDIE BOOKS. THEY ARE COOL
Mandie and the Singing Chalet (Book 17#).......2003-12-04
Mandie's in Switzerland, visiting with her friends an old friend of Mandie's Grandmother. Mandie's expecting a mystery any moment, and she 's not disappointed. They hear singing! The words are all jumbled together, but it's singing just the same. Mandie simply has to find out what's making the singing, even if it means taking it to extreme measures, which she does.
This is one neat book. I could not figure out what was causing the singing until the end of the book, which is rare because I am usually able to spot out the abnormalities quicker than the characters can. That made this book a real page-turner for me. Read it. I guarantee that you'll be surprised at the ending-that is, if you haven't read it already.
Out-of-this-world Awesome!.......2003-07-30
This book is so great because I just love Mandie and I have every Mandie book. My reccomedation is: Read it!

Book Description
Debra White Smith (more than 1 million books in print) presents book #4 in her popular Austen series. Based on Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Northpointe Chalet focuses on the scatterbrained but independent Kathy Moore who opens a coffee shop in a small town in Colorado.
When Ron and his sister, Liza, come by, Ron is attracted to Kathy. Oblivious to romance, Kathy enjoys their friendship. Kathy’s brother, Sam, and Liza start dating, and naturally the four of them socialize. Then Ben arrives, and there’s instant rapport with Kathy...to Ron’s chagrin and Liza and Sam’s ire.
In Kathy’s life, the line between the mysteries she reads and reality sometimes blurs. Discovering that Ben’s mother died mysteriously, Kathy investigates. Tension mounts as suspicion interferes with her relationship with Ben.
Customer Reviews:
A little cheesy.......2007-07-05
Without even comparing this book to one of Jane Austen's it still came up wanting. I wanted to like the characters but had a hard time identifying with them. I am single in my 20's and kept thinking that the characters were just a little too cheesy to be real.
It was nice, however, to read a book that was "clean" through and through.
Fun but no Austen.......2006-11-07
Hving read many if not all of Debra White Smith's Austen series I thought this one as close to the original as she has gotten. The book was cute. But the main character seemed more shallow and less engaging than Jane Austen's orginal Catherine. By directly correlating this book and the others to Austen I think I was predisposed to judge it by the original. So Nothpointe Chalet is fun, comfortable read and should be read as that and not a revisit of Northanger Abby.
Loved the original- this can't touch it.......2006-08-09
I read the first 50 pages, hoping the whole time that it would get better. I had previously read Central Park and really enjoyed it. When I saw a re-write of Northanger Abbey I thought that it would be a winner but the juvenile, overly simplistic writing style was extremely aggravating and annoying. I couldn't bring myself to read any further and waste anymore time bothering to find something worth continuing for. Such a disappointment! I'd recommend sticking with the originals. For Austen fans, the Gentleman trilogy by Pamela Aidan is quite good.
Okay quality, bad representation of Austen's characters.......2006-03-10
The book as a story (without counting the Austen side) is fair. The writing is not first-rate or absorbing. The characters are not especially wonderful.
As a modern rewrite of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, it falls short. The changing of setting and characters very much takes away from the charm of Jane's original. Lovers of Northanger Abbey will be disappointed with a less young and naive reproduction of Catherine, who is somewhat enjoyable but quite different. But much worse will be their disappointment with the new Henry Tilney. Lovers of "Da Man" (tall, almost handsome but not quite, teasing, great-coated), who is portrayed in Jane's Northanger, will more likely (I feel) be angry and outraged to find a man who seems to be more like the Henry Tilney in the 1986 adaptation of Northanger than the real Man. Ben Tilman is rarely teasing, and though smart enough, he has not the intelligence or quick wit of Da Man. It's really too bad, because a modern Henry Tilney, brought over to this century without any missing character traits, would be a delight to read.
It is a book to take out from your library, probably a bit of a waste of money to buy. Of interest to Janeites, but those from "The Cult of Da Man" (LOL) might want to stay away.
Missed the heart of Northanger Abbey.......2006-03-01
I love Northanger Abbey, so was looking forward to this story since I liked Central Park so much. I started this series out with Central Park, which sticks to the heart of the Jane Austen story more closely than the rest of her stories do. I felt that Debra really dropped the ball with this one, though. Perhaps I was just expecting too much.
In Northanger Abbey, our heroine is naive and sheltered, longing for adventure and her idea of what adventure is has been formed by the thrill and horror novels she loves. Her instincts warn her against those who only wish to use her, yet she doesn't pay attention and is duped in some of her friendships. In Northanger Abbey, our hero is well-educated, kind, and has a teasing humor. He is flattered by her open admiration, interest, and trust.
Yet in Northpointe Chalet, Debra changes all that. Our heroine is scatterbrained, wildly outgoing, and can spot the bad guys a mile away. There are no innocent questions or excuses from her made for other's bad behavior. Instead, she's the one issuing the warnings to the numbskulls who can't see the scheming going on! Our hero is still well-educated, but emotionally jerks our heroine around quite a few times and lacks much humor at all.
What I love about Northanger Abbey is 'watching' a fanciful, imaginative young woman who wants to live one of her exciting novel's stories slowly coming to realize that life is more than storybook. By the end she has matured into a level-headed woman our hero really can love for herself. Northpointe Chalet was a good enough story in itself, but the main characters really don't grow very much nor are that admirable or honorable. This time I feel that the author has missed the heart of Jane Austen's story.

Great Book on Michigan.......2004-02-25
My family and I love this book. It's easy to read and locate places to stay. We enjoy staying at private homes or cottages, which are normally very difficult to find. The vacation guide book has tons of them. This is the 3rd book I have bought and they just keep getting better with more choices and more photos. We have stayed at several of their "editor's choice" properties and never been dissappointed.
Best book I've found on reliable vacation properties.......2004-01-12
As long-time Michigan vacation travelers, we were delighted to come across this comprehensive resource. My family followed the recommendations in this book to a wonderful cottage in Traverse City. It was everything the guide promised. In the past, we had used the Web exclusively with disappointing results (cottages weren't always as great as they were advertised). This is the only resource we've found were the writers' actually **visit properties** and give truly objective and accurate reviews. We highly recommend this book and eagerly await the next edition. By the way, we just discovered their Web site at www.mivg.com. Finally, a more reliable Web resource.

I have an older version of this book and love it! Have just ordered the new edition and will be waiting for it to arrive. You will not be led astray!
Customer Reviews:
Loved this first book in the series, but this edition is abridged.......2006-02-13
I read the abridged version of this book first, and was thoroughly charmed by the adventures of Joey and her sister as they begin a boarding school in the Alps. I love that you not only get the antics of a group of girls and the young women starting the school, but the adventure of travelling to a new country, and learning new languages and ways.
The language flows beautifully, but is complex enough that I'd recommend it for ages 9 and up. I struggled a bit with it when I was nine, but gradually my reading ability caught up as I reread the books. They are complex and fun enough that I read them as an adult, for comfort reading.
This book is unfortunately unabridged, but the abridgements are not noticeable to the reader if you don't know what you are missing, though they are frequent enough to warrant an unabridged copy (Girls Gone By Press has recently republished an unabridged edition) if you are a big fan.
But this is absolutely an amazing book, and not to be missed on any account, even if you just get the abridged one. Truly a great start to the series and fine as a stand alone as well.
Kind of Old Fasioned..........2001-12-22
They said you had to be ages 4-8 to enjoy this book. In some ways I disagree. It is so old and involves such a different culture that really, a ten year old would find it "topping". This is the first in a series of many and it starts out pretty slow. My suggestion is too skim the first few pages unless you are completely interested in taking a tour of certain parts of Europe. Pretty soon, the story picks up and you can't help but love Joey though there really aren't any main characters. Some interesting and somewhat unpredictible things happen that are totally irrevolent. The main idea of the story is that this English girl decides to start a school in the Tiernees Mountains. Slowly the school poputlation grows and the usual amount of unusual accurences accur. It's a pretty good read, even if you are older than eight!

Excellent Historical Archive of Chalet Design.......2003-11-17
This wonderful book has thankfully been saved from obscurity and repinted. It is a treasure trove of Chalet architectual detailing. Craftsman's art that has long since died out, it has many pictures showing how the construction was done. Floor plans large and small you could build from today. They also delve into how this vernacular developed over time. Explains the rocks on the roof and the purpose of the wedged shaped eves (avalanche protection). If you have a Chalet project or a curiosity about how these were made, this is the book for you.

Book Description
Swiss artist François Chalet started as a comic drawer and illustrator until he began to remodel his skills for the computer. From then on he designed flyers and album covers and his inimitable way of interweaving comic figures and modern computer graphics into stories has brightened up MTV campaigns, illustrated magazines (from jetzt! to Harper´s Bazaar), ads and websites. François Chalet´s style has become a trademark, inspiring other graphic designers to take the creative challenge of developing an own metaphorical language - and is very fun. The book does not only show this well-known side of his, but gives insight into the working methods and ideas of graphic conceptions which often blend with his illustrations. Chalet is happy, colourful, funky and at the same time , like the Büro Destruct book, a universal statement on the way-of-life.

A chic voice.......2001-11-12
You may have seen artist Francois Chalet's work already without knowing it -- he has designed the horoscope icons for `Harper's Bazaar' and has done numerous campaigns for MTV, for example the European Music Awards 2001. And if simple graphic illustrations with a European look that's influenced with Japanese design is your thing, you might want to check out some more of Chalet's work. His mathematic, bowed faces, minimalist drawings and computer illustrations are now available in this book, which not only contains examples of his work but also insights into his working methods, which is helpful for aspiring artists seeking a virginal taste.
A JEWEL of graphic design.......2001-04-20
I wish I could show the inside of this book because by just looking at it, the design speaks for itself. The Chalet's graphic world is full of very creative and funny characters that have been made for such experimental clients as MTV. When I opened the book for the first time I was (and I'm still) amazed to see how much this guy had made with a computer. Without hesitation I give this book more than five stars and if you're a lover of the MTV style you're definitely going to cherish this book.
