60 Hikes Within 60 Miles Twin Cities.......2002-12-21
Fantastic book. I never realized what this area had to offer in hiking opportunities. This book really covers the area very well. The maps and description are a great read and enhance the experience. I've walked a long way in my time and this book just adds to the adventure.
Something for Everyone.......2002-12-21
This book is great for visitors to the Twin Cities or long-time residents. Excellent directions and maps and useful and accurate information about the difficulty of the trail, trail length and access, plus special elements of interest. The book reads as though Tom is right there with you. One item that I find especially unique is that this book also presents trails that are accessible to people in wheelchairs or who have physical limitations that would preclude them from enjoying most areas of hiking and yet they can still get the feeling of being in the woods and a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and there are also hikes for the more experienced hiker. Excellent variety of hiking trails for all, plus a few areas that I did not know about and I live in the Twin Cities! Would make an excellent gift!
Great hikes, so close, so many.......2002-12-13
I knew there were a lot of parks around the cities but this book takes each one with a good trail system and shares the walk with the reader...easy to follow and easy to review to decide which hikes to take. Also like the fact that the author is a naturalist and shares facts and tidbits about the things found along the hike. This is a good birthday or Christmas gift for anyone who is even a casual hiker.
Book Description
With a wealth of information on ecology, geology, state history, and useful hiking tips for beginners and experts alike, this is the only reference you'll need.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Minnesota Guide.......2007-03-20
I really enjoy this book. The entire state is covered from the north to the south. A brief description of each hike is included along with the general location and GPS coordinates. The maps outline the entire hike and even denote campgrounds and picnic areas. This book is a complete guide and wil supply years of hiking information
The best hikes in Minnesota.......2001-02-12
Minnesota has an immense variety of places to hike. It's the size of the British Isles. And it has a more complicated river drainage system than any other state -- rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, to the Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. It has far more lakes than any other state, too. Plus it has more different kinds of habitat than any other state -- hardwood forest, northern evergreen forest, tall grass prairie, savannah and bog.
The 87 Minnesota hikes described here will introduce you to the best of this, if you're just passing through there, or keep you busy for years if you live there.

Customer Reviews:
Furtman is right on the money!.......1998-12-13
Having read lots of other books on this subject, I have to say that this title is the only one that meshes with my experience. His recommendations are absolutely on the money due to a paring away of hype surrounding the gear you should use when canoe camping. A great book for the novice canoe-camper and one with opinions which happen to be borne out by the experience of others.
Good for the complete novice.......1998-11-06
I found that the book was directed more toward complete novices. The book was overly detailed for a person with even limited experience. The book also addressed specific types and brand names of equipment that the author used, while only brielfy touching on other options available. A novice wishing to follow the equipment recommendations to the letter should be aware that his choices were also very expensive, particularly for people who may only make one trip a summer. I much preferred Cliff Jacobson's "Boundary Waters, Canoe Camping with Style". Jacobson offers route recommendations, excellent illustrations, recipes and a miriad of equipment choices. He also provides a list of manufacturers in the appendix.
Entertaining and educational; well worth the read........1997-12-28
Furtman has vast experience in the canoe country of northern Minnesota and southern Canada. Through his writing he empowers the reader to make wise choices with regards to trip planing, packing, camping, canoeing and cooking. The book is well worth reading for anyone contemplating a trip to Canoe Country in the future. It even makes great reading for those of us who have experienced this great adventure. I found myself saying, "why didn't I think of that", time and time again.

A "Must Have" when Hiking the S.H.T........2005-03-26
The "Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail" provides an impressive amount of information for those wishing to "day" or "through" hike the Superior Hiking Trail. Excellent maps and trail descriptions combined with a plethora of geological, historical and cultural information make this a "must have" for anyone considering visiting the Superior Hiking Trail.
The best guide to the best hike.......2001-03-06
The 200-mile trail along the Minnesota edge of Lake Superior may be the best hike in the United States. Almost anyone would agree it's among the top 10. And Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail is the best guide.
It has all of the details you need to know to hike the trailk in safety. Plus, it has information about geology, scenery, habitat, birds and animals.
Superior guide for a superior trail.......2000-07-11
This awesome trail is broken down step by step with great hints, tips and ideas as to what to see where and when to go. Definitely not your typical boring trail guide, and it has VERY readable maps. Over two hundred miles of the North Shore are clearly described...so get off the computer and head to Duluth!
Book Description
The First Ladies Fact Book is the definitive guide to the lives, achievements, triumphs, and tragedies of every first lady from Martha Washington to Laura Bush. Arranged chronologically for easy reference and illustrated throughout with artwork, photographs, and documents, it is a complete overview of everything you’d ever need to know: the major impact of their lives and the legacies they left behind; their personalities and personal habits; their early lives; their family backgrounds, siblings, children, friends, and foes.
What’s more,
The First Ladies Fact Book surpasses typical references, featuring selections of the most intimate correspondence of each first lady, from letters to their families to letters to their presidential husbands. Delightful surprises abound, including little-known information about the women’s hobbies, style of dress, habits of socializing, and peculiarities. The more than 700 evocative photographs include sixteen pages of color photography of first-lady fashion, making it a wonderful combination of solid reference and eyecatching visual history.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating information!.......2006-11-10
I am teaching an extra-curricular high school class this semester on the history of U.S. presidents and wives. This book has some very interesting information on the wives of the presidents. I have found fascinating tidbits from this book which kept my students interested even when the presidents might have proven boring! I am enjoying reading the book on a personal note too!
Fascinating Stories.......2006-03-19
This huge book bollows Mr. Harris earlier book The Presidents Fact Book where he talked of the Achievements, Events, People, Triumphs, and Tragedies of Every President. Obviously in this book he is not talking about the presidents but their wives.
The first ladies have had their own share of the making of history. In recent years, Jackie Kennedy did a lot towards the creation of the Camelot image of the Kennedy years. Hillary Clinton is certainly remembered for her efforts towards creating universal health care.
These are just two small details of the lives of two first ladies. This book has over 700 pages about their lives, their interests, their activities in the white house and the way that they worked with their husbands to assist in the governance of the country.
And yes, there is a color section of pictures featuring mostly the clothes they wore.
Book Description
Colorful images, removable memorabilia, and authoritative but easy-to-understand text combines to tell the story of all of America's Commanders in Chiefs from George Washington to George W. Bush-their personalities, their politics, and their significant contributions.

Customer Reviews:
This is no dry history book!.......2004-05-22
Sadly, as a rule, I have no great interest in history. But Ms. Behrman's approach brings the person of Thomas Jefferson to life in a way that appeals to all ages. She puts personality and emotion into her writing which makes potentially dull facts, dates and events brim with energy. This is a wonderful series and she does it justice in every way.
A winning presidential biography.......2004-04-17
This is another winning presidential biography, the third by this author. Like her earlier books about John Adams and Andrew Jackson, this one about our third president is a great read not just for kids, but for adults as well. Thomas Jefferson's life, both private and public, is presented in a clear and graceful style. The man who writings and thoughts formed the basis of our democratic republic becomes vivid and real in this telling as does the turbulent era in which he lived. The book's attractive design and pictures add to the pleasure of reading it.

Book Description
This biographical dictionary covers all who have held this esteemed "office," including current First Lady Laura Bush. An in-depth introductory essay traces the history of the first lady, including changes in the conception of what a president's wife should do and be, and how these perceptions have been affected by changes in society overall. The book also offers intriguing vital statistics, such as presidents who had no wives during their presidencies, wives who devoted themselves to purely domestic duties, and wives who died during their husbands' terms in office.
Arranged chronologically by term of presidency, each biographical entry includes a detailed biography with an emphasis on life during the presidency, a chronology, and suggestions for further reading about that first lady.
