Book Description
The official guide to Hadrian’s Wall Path, England’s newest National Trail, which follows the ancient Roman wall from coast to coast.
Customer Reviews:
The best of the best.......2006-06-15
A lot of interesting and helpful information is packed into this small trail guide making it a must-have when walking Hadrian's Wall. The maps are clear and precise with commentary that allows the walker to interpret structures along the way. The small loop hikes included are an extra bonus and well worth taking. The text alerts the reader to small items of interest that might otherwise be missed along the footpath, like the Roman mile stone on the path to Vindolanda. Brief essays introduce the reader to a bit of context for the Wall. If you buy only one book, this should probably be it.
Well illustrated, well written - just like being there.......2004-04-15
This is a great travel book, a synthesis of fine writing, beautiful color pictures, and excellent Ordnance Survey maps. It pulls a region together and makes it feel like you are there.
Starting with a few wide range maps and a bit of history, this National Trail Guide sets the context of Hadrian's Wall in time and in space, both how to get there, and why you would want to visit. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a British National Trail (one of 13), and an important historical site, Hadrian's Wall offers many beautiful natural vistas, archaeological and Roman historical sites, and a cross section of British city, town, and country life. All arranged in a linear 84 mile (135 km) national park.
The book assumes a walking tour, with an introduction, 6 descriptive tour chapters, and a few sections on resources and additonal reading. The most interesting parts for me are the 6 tours. Each chapter is nicely arranged with a map or photo per page with descriptive text along side.
The Ordnance Survey maps are the best in the world - very readable and clear. This book reprints the 1:25,000 maps verbatim, the same as you get at Ordnance Survey Get-a-Map ( http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/). Similarly, the photos of buildings and vistas along the wall are well done - colorful and excellent resolution.
However, what is most impressive is the prose that winds along the maps and photos. "Where the verge path ends, cross the stile and continue on the footpath inside the wall. Now having joined the field, the Vallum looks even more impressive." Reading the words and following along the maps makes the tour completely life-like for me, making me feel like I am walking along with a tour guide.
The book is printed on thick paper with nicely embossed textured heavy-stock cover stock. The page corners are rounded nicely. Completely high quality.
Perhaps the book can be improved by more depth. I would love to read a bit more about the pubs or the sleeping accomodations. However, I too understand that this information would change quickly or perhaps be a bit too partisan.
In the end, the book makes me want to revisit the area. It also makes me want to get other titles in the series such as Offa's Dyke, The Pennine Way, or The Thame's Path - place I have never been. For me that is the mark of a true travelogue: it makes you want to rush out and see the place firsthand.

Customer Reviews:
Hiking guide as art.......2007-07-29
This beautiful guide to England's Coast to Coast walk is a rare thing... a very practical and reasonably up to date guide by the man who originated the route together with the original drawings and maps Wainright did to accompany the original edition. It is a beautiful book. The photoreproductions of Wainright's original handprinting give the book the feel of an historical artifact; a work of art from a different era.
Good book, but text is ridiculously small.......2007-01-09
The content in this book is terrific. Unfortunately, the text is ridiculously small. I cannot conceive of why. If the text were a reasonable size, I would have given the book a 5-star rating.
A Coast to Coast Walk.......2005-08-31
A great book for planning and walking across England. It has all the details necessary and is written in a humorous vein. The personal drawings and asides add to the light-hearted approach. Really necessary for the details of the walk.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastically Entertaining.......2007-05-17
It is unbelievable to me there is one bad review here. It has been years since I could NOT put down a book until I was finished, reading well into the early morning. The story seemed at first to drag but once it took off I was engrossed. I was leery of a non-Dalziel/Pascoe mystery but am so glad R.H. decided on a vacation of his regular series. The ending was unreal, the plot wrapped in an eloquent bow. I strongly recommend this book as well as anything else by this author.
Not a Ghost of a Chance.......2007-04-03
Hard to believe that the creator of Dalziel and Pascoe could come up with this piece of dreck. At best this is a book for extremely credulous mid-adolescent readers, not adults. But even then....Neither of the central characters are especially attractive. One is an obnoxious young math whizz and logician who seems always to have just the right kind of knowledge to push the implausible story along. The other is a former seminarian who communes with the spirits of long dead relatives and whatever other ghosts who happen to be in the neighbourhood. Add in an English village full of stock "colourful" characters, and a running time of well over 500 none too action-packed pages, and you end up with what this book is: a recipe for disaster.
Clever story, terrific writing.......2007-03-23
One of my favorite gems is the saying "never complain, never explain". It was offered up by Frek, who is just one of several characters that are really great characters. Try to go a day without complaining. Then try to spend the next day without saying anything bad about someone who is not present. These practices can improve your life.
Another was something like "the kind of a place where not only did they stare at strangers, they probably pointed at the sky whenever a plane flew overhead."
Gotta love Reg.......2006-09-26
Well, what can I add, except that Hill's colloquialisms, one liners and Australian/British mix of home grown vernacular make the book a joy to read aside from the entertaining plot. There's a gem on every page. A great romp of a plot with interesting places, historical background and wonderful characters.
Pretty good.......2006-09-22
Overall, I liked this book. It had a lot going for it in terms of plot, characters, and unexpected developments. There is a spooky isolated village in the hillside feel to the town, and a nice interplay between ancient, past, and present events. I did think the book would have gone from good to great if the writing had been better. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, and I did like the book. There were just certain things that could have been touched up by an editor - the overuse of exlamation points and random jokes that were out of place in the narrative, for one thing. Also, some of the situations seemed almost forced - Sam snapping at Mig every second to create 'friction' between them, except that some of her angry remarks make no sense in the context of what is happening. Overall I recommend as light reading.

Customer Reviews:
Superb First Book.......2003-08-04
If you are looking for your fist guide book then this is great. I was born in the UK and know the lakes fairly well, having walked many of the hills. I bought this guide for a trip in 2004 as I havent been in the UK since 1997.
It is a superb pocket book with snippets about most things. The maps is pretty basic, so get yourself a nice Ordnance Survey map 1:25,000 or 1:12500 when you arrive.
Excellent, easy to carry little book!.......2000-05-10
I am VERY pleased with the Berlitz Lake District Pocket Guide. It is a small, compact little book but is nonetheless clear and easy to read. Unlike many guide books, the paragraphs are well deliniated and the desired information about specific locations is easy to find. The photos are of good quality and the fold-out maps on front and back cover are especially handy. I am pleased to find such a comprehensive guidebook for this region without having to purchase a large and cumbersome tourbook with lots of unwanted information. I highly reccommend this little book for those who are considering travel to this beautiful corner of the world!

Flight #116 is down is a good book.......2007-05-09
Jake Abbott
Book review
Flight #116 is down
My book review is about Flight #116 Is Down by: Caroline B. Cooney. It about a
kid named Patrick and his friend Heidi. They live in a town near New York and they both
want something different. There are other characters in the story but Patrick and
Heidi are the main characters.
Patrick is about 12, He works as a junior for ambulance calls. He wants there to be a disaster. He is a junior so he doesn't get credit for anything, only for helping. He wants to clean up a disaster so he can get some credit. But there is a problem. He is in a town were nothing bad happens. Heidi is a unpopular rich teen-aged girl. She doesn't want there to be a disaster. She likes the nice quiet town. But when the disaster happens she thinks everything is her fault but it's not.
My favorite part was when the plane crashed. All the action started. I think you should read this because it has a lot of stories and it is a fun book to read. The title to me just makes you want to read the book.
If you like action books this is the book to read. It has lots of characters with different stories and different problems. You'll like this book. Have fun and enjoy!
AHHHHH!!!! SO GOOD!.......2007-03-28
This is such a great book!!!!!! The stories are so intricately interwoven that you get to know even the lesser characters well. It is amazing, and definitely Cooney's best! I cry every time I read this book...it's awesome!
Mostly Realistic, But Bad Romance.......2007-02-20
When a huge passenger airplane crashes down in the middle of a field in Connecticut, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that so many people on board survived the crash landing. The bad news is that parts of the plane are burning, the weather is wet and slippery, and the field is in a remote part of town, hard to get to and hard to get out of. Heidi lives in the nearest house; her family actually owns the land where the plane crashed. She has always been a pretty average person, but now she needs to make herself do some extraordinary things in order to help save the lives of the passengers on this plane.
Patrick is a high school student and a trained EMT on the volunteer squad in town. He ends up being one of the first responders to Heidi's emergency phone call. Although the tragedy is huge, he can't help being excited at this opportunity to prove himself and to really save lives. He relishes the chance to make an actual difference in his world and to do something so meaningful.
As other volunteers arrive on the scene, we are able to see parts of their personal lives and their thoughts on the tragedy. We also get some insight into the thoughts of the passengers who were traveling on that plane. The book paints a horrifying picture of a disaster, and highlights the heroic and sometimes completely random efforts of those who try to save people from such a disaster.
I thought this book was realistic in its portrayal of what people would feel after a plane crash. I liked that the characters were true to themselves throughout the book. People who started off with a bad side stayed that way throughout the book, instead of having major revelations and turning good in the middle. I didn't like the romance that developed, though. It was formulaic and the book would have been stronger without it.
5 stars for Flight #116 is down!.......2006-10-25
I am not much of a reader, I really only read when it is absolutly necessary. I have a very high reading level because I can read extremely well, but hate too. With this book it was different, I would always try to finish my work early in class so I could pick up the book to read it! I really think this book was one of the most exciting ones I have ever read! The characters in this book really came to life for me. I know many women like Darinne, who always try to outshine everyone and look better. I also know many people like Hiedi who always try and do the right thing and don't panic in extreme situations! I would love to just tell this whole book but that would ruin the surprize of you buying it to read! Overall this was a great book and I really enjoyed it!
Flight 116 Is Down Is Awesome!!!.......2006-06-02
Flight 116 Is Down is the best book ever!! I am an extremely avid reader, and this is the only book that I can read front to back and 2 minutes after reading the last page start it all over!! I love this book because it's soooooooo descripitive!! Most kids that hate to read and are forced to for school read the first chapter and the last chapter. This is impossible with her books!!
