Ghana travel guide.......2007-09-30
My daughter is in college, and is currently at the University of Ghana, Accra, Ghana. I bought her this before she left, and she has found it to be an invaluable resource!

Informative, sympathetic, and thorough.......2007-06-14
I visited Ghana in April 2007, and although I was visiting relatives and so had some local contacts, this book was a great help, both from the point of view of planning my trip and learning about the country. The short commentaries from various contributors on subjects such as local wildlife, nightlife or travelling solo as a woman, were especially informative and often entertaining as well. The maps in particular, while simple, were indispensable, as good local maps can be quite difficult to find even in Ghana.
A useful additional tool are the regular updates to the guide on the Bradt website, which have many contributions from recent travellers, including places that are closed (either temporarily or permanently) and recommendations for additional places to stay/eat or visit. I've heard that the 4th edition is due out in fall of 2007, and I'm tempted to go ahead and get it, too, for my next visit!
Good reference guide.......2007-03-25
Book very informative, with excellent info on where to go and how to get there. Plan to put it to good use in the fall!
Ghana on the ground.......2006-07-27
Observations, current and pertainent info, from knowledgeable travelers who've been there. This is the stuff you want to know to plan a successful journey.
An Excellent Travel Guide.......2005-09-09
If you are traveling to Ghana, West Africa, this is the essential guide to have with you. It has an easy to read layout and includes everything you would ever need to know. I highly recommend this if you are going to that area. I am glad I own a copy!

Without a doubt, take this book with you!.......2001-07-13
Briggs knows Ghana like the back of his hand. And this book, compact and inexpensive, served as a Bible to me on my recent visit to Ghana. Truly, without his intimate knowledge of this West African country's landscape and peoples, I would have had a hard time knowing whether I was coming or going. Highly recommended.
Great Chrissie Present.......2001-01-05
I was presented with this guide as a christmas gift a month prior to leaving for a six week journey through Ghana in 1999. I was thrilled to discover a more comprehensive guide book than those produced by Lonely Planet. Given time to compare notes before travelling it was only to my benefit to carry this guide. As with all guide books information tends to date quickly, therefore it becomes important to future editions for a traveller to make their own contribution to assist others on their journey. As a single female traveller in Ghana this guide book was an easy to use and essential tool, not only did it assist me but others I met along the way. I'd recommend this Guide to Ghana and any future editions to anyone.
Detailed Travel Guide........2001-01-04
This is definatly the most detailed guide to Ghana currently available, however it is not aimed at students or others traveling on a low budget. It is also a little out of date eg. it recommends the Castle Restaurant in Cape Coast which burn down three years ago! things change fast in Ghana so no guide will be absolutly up to date, this is a usefull basis for exploring the smaller towns which other guides miss out.
Great Book.......2000-05-17
An excelent Guide to Ghana that covers all aspects of the country. Contains a lot of good advice. I would recomend it to every one.
A Complete, Comprehensive Guide.......2000-03-31
Most Travel Guides just focus on the southern areas of Ghana, near Accra, Takoradi, Cape Coast and along the coastline. This book covers the entire country and every possible way of getting around.
For example, the Lonely planet's West Africa Guide did not provide information on how to get from Bolga to Wa. This book gave us the bus company, time and price of the trip. When arriving in Bolga we asked how to get to Wa and most of the people there were not really positive, but sure enough the book was completely accurate.
Another example was when we were in the Volta Region climbing Mount Afedzeto. There were no places to stay, but the guide says that if one asks for the Peace Corps on duty, that member will gladly give you a room. Sure enough we had a very comfortable place to stay for the night.
This book is well written and the best on the market. There is an incredibly helpful guide to the animals one will see in Mole national Park and a great general guide about how to get around and what to are "cultural taboos."
The author's writing style makes the book easy to read and allows you to know him well after only reading one section.
It is the only guide book that is fitting for such a diverse and delightful country.

Book Description
Ghana is a vibrant and alluring country, steeped in a rich tradition and a frequently tragic history. Free from the trappings of mass tourism, this former British colony has much to offer the visitor. Tropical beaches abound but there's so much more. Feed the sacred crocodiles at Paga, plunge into the waterfalls of the eastern highlands, marvel at the game-rich savannah of Mole National Park, or relive the chilling story of the coastal slave forts.
This guide has been expanded and fully updated for this second edition. It contains information on where to stay, eat, and how to get around; Ghanaian culture, from social traditions to kente cloth weaving; natural history and national parks and over 50 clear maps and town plans.
Customer Reviews:
An essential Book!.......2004-01-10
Living in Ghana for 7 months would have been impossible without this book (or its predecessor) to help me. Packed with information that is easy to read, set out clearly and in not to small a print! This new edition has accounts by people who have lived or visited these places to give you another take on things. Phillip Briggs writes with enthusiasm and because he has actually been to these places and stayed there for some time he is familiar with the way of things. My book was falling apart by the time I left as it had been used, thumbed through and taken so many places. I will definately be using Bradt travel guides whenever I go away again.
The Bradt guide rocks my world!.......2003-09-03
The Bradt guide was indispensible during my 2 month stay in Ghana. While there were some inaccurate prices quoted, Briggs did explain in his introduction that these prices fluctuate with a currency as weak as the cedi and therefore this was expected. I found the book to be immensely useful and accurate. I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Ghana for any length of time and I eagerly await the 3rd edition.
Travel to Ghana with this book.......2003-08-07
This is absolutely the best guide book for traveling to Ghana. I don't know how I would have gotten around without it. The Bradt guide covers all the regions of Ghana intensively with clear descriptions of transportation, accommodation, where to eat, etc. What makes this book stand out from the rest are the maps of small towns and villages that are detailed and very accurate.
With its tips on bargaining, prices, and cultural advice you can easily just step off the plane and plan your vacation straight from this book. I found while traveling around the back roads of Ghana for 6 weeks that my fellow travelers were constantly borrowing my copy. Even when I was in way out areas I was able to whip out my book and find places to eat and sleep.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who's planning a trip to Ghana, and especially if your trip is away from tourist areas. I suggest traveling away from the cities anyway. The rural areas are so much more traditional and untouched that I found it more enjoyable than the urban areas.
Briggs details an often difficult country.......2003-04-24
In anticipation of my first trip to Africa and more specifically, Ghana, I decided that having a guide on hand would make the trip easier and less stressful. I traveled with a group of eight students from the U.S., none of whom had researched the country or had any idea what they were getting themselves into.
After purchasing Phillip Briggs' book I began thumbbing through and highlighting places of interest. I read his synopsis of the country and learned enough information based on that to educate my fellow travelers. Throughout my six weeks in Ghana, I used his book on a daily basis. From restaurant suggestions to tourist attractions to detailed directions in an often mind boggling setting, Briggs was right on the money and made our trip much easier. While he sometimes failed to emphasize the road hazards (i.e. the Baobeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary whose dirt path stretched for endless miles and whose potholes almost toppled our van.), that was our only complaint. Phillip Briggs definitely made my trip to Ghana an enjoyable one. I'm anxious to get back and see even more of the places he describes.
Some thoughts on Briggs' Second edition, guide to Ghana..........2002-06-26
In that this follows a number of other reviews of Philip Briggs' "Ghana--The Bradt Travel Guide" (second edition), there may be a "coals to Newcastle" aspect to my comments. I found the first edition, recommended by a Ghanaian friend, very helpful on a trip to Ghana in February of 2001. I've since bought the second (updated and expanded) edition, and find it as readable as the first, as well as continuing to give a reasonable level of detail about getting around, places to stay, and things to see. There are some pet items that in my view would have warranted mention, such as the universities in Cape Coast and Kumasi, but it's not reasonable to expect everything about a country to show up in 354 pages. Having worked in Ghana years ago, I was not starting from zero when picking up Briggs' book. I had also been checking with a few Ghanaian friends, and had been looking into websites. Maybe that's the main point to make: No single source of information, even a very good guidebook such as this one, can be entirely complete and up-to-date.
From the U.S., at least, your visa application may be your first encounter with Ghanaian bureaucracy. Unless you live close to the embassy in Washington or the consulate in New York, get started at least two months in advance. Once in Ghana, you'll need to get adjusted to some third-world realities. Those used to North American and European infrastructure and scheduling efficiency may have to remind themselves that things really will typically take longer, that power and water outages can be frequent, that transportation will not always be fully predictable, and that breakdowns should not be a surprise. Get on the road early whenever possible, make sure that you fill that bucket in the bathroom promptly on arrival, and keep a flashlight handy. Ghana is not, in short, the sort of "autofocus" vacation area that we may tend to expect, but instead qualifies as your "grittier, more economical, more authentic African experience". Keep in mind that if you have travelled all day and arrived somewhere hot, sweaty, dusty and grimy, that your initial impression of a destination will probably not be as favorable as it will be a day later, once you have had the chance to clean up, rest up, and get calibrated to the place. Ghanaians pointed out to us, and our experience verified, that transportation functions more efficiently in southern and central Ghana than it does further north, and one should plan accordingly. Philip Briggs' guide to Ghana will definitely help in that planning.

There are 10 reviews of this book here, they do not all seem genuine, just keep that in mind. they are all written in the same style, with many of the same comments.
My trip to the supermarket this morning was more interesting.......2004-06-08
I was very disapointed with this book. I'm recently teaching many Ghanains and hoped this book would give me a liottle bit of insight on their culture, but it was just a boring travel journal. I would not recommed this book, unless you're a good friend or family member of Mr. Gaines.
Experience Ghana!.......2003-05-20
It is remarkable to think that this is Mr. Gaines first book! He has hit a homerun the first time at bat! After completing the book I was struck with a desire to experince Ghana for myself!
12 Days in Ghana.......2003-04-07
12 Days in Ghana is a superb publication! Once I started reading the book, I couldn't put it down. I was amazed that this was Mr. Gaines first publication. 12 Days in Ghana made me laugh and cry - he did an excellent job on incorporating emotions and humor throughout the book. His writing style made me feel that I was with him on his journey to Ghana. This book has inspired me to continue my research on my family history. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a voyage to their Ghana or anyone who is planning to search their own roots. I am hoping Mr. Gaines will write a sequel to the book!
Ghana's a great country.......2003-02-11
My co-worker's brother wrote this book so I decided to support him and read it. Since I'm preparing for a trip to Ghana also I thought this book was interesting and Mr. Gaines' adventures were hilarious.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!!!.......2004-02-19
I'm a big sports fan and I loved "The Kid From Courage." It tells the story of a junior tennis player who is trying hard to succeed at tennis. He meets an old man who becomes his coach, and it's very cool how they have to deal with a bunch of stuff, but they don't give up. I won't give it away, but it's exciting how the book ends when he has to play the biggest tournament of his whole life. My best friend is reading it now and he says it is fantastic. I think all kids who like sports will like reading it.
A terrific book for young readers and their parents.......2003-09-12
"The Kid From Courage" is a terrific book for young readers -- especially kids from 8 to 16 -- but also for older teenagers, and even young adults and parents.
It succeeds on several levels. The story of an aspiring tennis player is a riveting drama with unexpected twists and turns. Will he succeed, or will the many obstacles stymie him?
On several occasions I was nearly overcome with tears as I
feared he would fail. I so much hoped he and his maligned but savvy oldtimer coach would prove the naysayers wrong.
Written in the first person, "The Kid From Courage" tells
his story as only a teenager, with his hopes and fears and joys,
can. He does suffer quite a few setbacks, but they only make
the story more believable and poignant. Those setbacks -- and eventual triumph -- also provide valuable lessons about hard work, dedication, diplomacy, self-belief, family values, courage, and loyalty.
The author has used those lessons productively at the end of the book. There for each chapter he poses questions and a suggested essay for readers to test their knowledge and writing skills.
"The Kid From Courage" is an inspiring and uplifting story, one that I highly recommend for your kids.
I Recommend This Book.......2003-08-23
My twelve year old son enjoys playing tennis, so I picked up "The Kid From Courage", as I'm trying to encourage him to read more. I was delighted that he absolutely loved the book. He has actually been telling his friends about the book, a first for him! Although I haven't read the book myself, I highly recommend it based on my son's positive reaction.
Really Liked This Book.......2003-08-21
I am an eleven year old tennis player from southern California and I thought this book was outstanding. It really inspires young tennis players to work hard and reach their goals. It is an excellent book for kids who love sports, and I especially recommend it for young tennis players. This book was excellent and definitely deserves some credit.

STEPPING OUT OF THE BUBBLE: REFLECTIONS ON THE PILGRIMAGE OF COUNSELING THERAPY is the story of courage and risk taken by those who seek to better their lives. Drawing on the wisdom of those who provided a foundation for counseling theory and and practice, Krehbiel shares his expertise and wealth of experience. By sharing personal experiences, you will find encouragement to move forward in the journey toward personal growth and development.
Customer Reviews:
understanding myself.......2007-05-01
After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.
A practical resource for better living.......2006-03-27
For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Practicing Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist and author of "Stepping Out Of The Bubble", James Krehbiel proficiently shares a portion of his expertise, condensing great weight into accessible and workable solutions for a more fulfilling life's plan.
The "bubble" represents our security and comfort zone, but it is also the inner place where we store the pain of our past experiences and the unpleasant reality of that not being made conscious which keeps us bound in unhealthy and self-defeating patterns. Staying within this bubble limits our emotional responsiveness as we numb ourselves to the coexistence even as unresolved issues unconsciously filter forth. To step outside of the bubble is to courageously examine the contents in all honesty and to face life's reality outside of the bubble. Once outside the bubble, one can move forward to experience life in more emotional depth, fullness and passion. "Being a fully functioning individual is about being true to whom you are and letting things be the way they are," explains author, James Krehbiel.
With brilliant and compassionate understanding, Mr. Krehbiel briefly details methods used and pertinent case examples within his therapy practice. "Self-regulation is a goal of therapy. I educate people in the fact that all the answers are ultimately within." "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" strives to do the same, by giving information on how we become trapped in the bubble and how beneficial the making of conscious choices to leave, can be.
Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.
I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.
Reviewed -by C.Gale Perkins-author.......2006-03-18
Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.
This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.
Gaining Courage to Live Outside of the Bubble.......2006-02-25
James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."
His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!
My Review of a Great Book.......2006-02-23
"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.
I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.
The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.
Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.
To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.
