Book Description
January 24th
After you've had it, there isn't even life without drugs....
It started when she was served a soft drink laced with LSD in a dangerous party game. Within months, she was hooked, trapped in a downward spiral that took her from her comfortable home and loving family to the mean streets of an unforgiving city. It was a journey that would rob her of her innocence, her youth -- and ultimately her life.
Read her diary.
Enter her world.
You will never forget her.
For thirty-five years, the acclaimed, bestselling first-person account of a teenage girl's harrowing decent into the nightmarish world of drugs has left an indelible mark on generations of teen readers. As powerful -- and as timely -- today as ever, Go Ask Alice remains the definitive book on the horrors of addiction.

A sad tale that teaches a lesson........2007-09-27
I remember hearing about this book many years ago and now finally got around to reading it. Interesting read (even if it is mostly fiction). It is the diary of a young girl who grew up in the 60's and gets mixed up with drugs. It is pretty sad because you can tell by reading her diary, that she really loved her family. They were a strong family. The parents were together. The girl seems to be like an average teenager. So, you try and figure out what could have possibly gone wrong with this young teenage life? My thought is, part of the reason this happened was, she was a victim of the era. The 60's were very turbulent. Between the war, the assignations of King and the Kennedys. The "hippy" style that was popular then. And drugs were a huge part of this time. It seems drugs were very popular and easy to get. It also seemed like this girl had a very low self esteem and she didn't feel like she had anyone to talk to about her fears and the drug use. She seemed very manipulated by her friends and the drug scene at school. This book teaches kids and parents several lessons. When the drug use began with this teenager, it was during the summer when she was staying with her grandparents. She had too much freedom to come and go as she pleased and should have been on a tighter rein. Parents should know where their teenager is and who they are with at all times. Open communication is key. Not only between the teenager and parents but with teachers and counselors at school as well. The drug scene in schools have not gone away. It may look different than the 60's but it's definitely still there. I would recommend this book to all teenagers and parents. It may help someone make a decision to "say no".
What a Trip!.......2007-08-05
After taking a couple hours to read this "diary," I realized I had read it once in high school. Of course, that was long before I knew anything about the drug culture and didn't understand half of the lingo. Now, I realize why so many people don't believe this is an authentic diary written by a 15-year-old. It does seem more like propaganda and it read like an adult trying to write like a teenager, especially some of the vocabulary. And the afterward was a bit too convenient, too much of a "moral."
Otherwise, it was a good book, a quick read, and a trip down the rabbit hole. A great picture of the pressures of high school during a time when drugs were prevalent (even more so than now). It's easy to see how someone with low self-esteem can get caught up in the lifestyle.
A VERY Interesting Read.......2007-08-03
It doesn't matter if this is fiction or non-fiction, tomato, tomahtoe, this book is very interesting. I didn't read it as a teenager. I just read it this past week for the first time, and I'm an adult. I highly recommend this book to ALL teenagers to read. It's relatable and identifiable and really shows you how you can go from being an normal, boring, awkward teenager into a downward spiral into death just like that. This book was hard to put down. I think the author of this book was creative, geniune and innovative in putting it into a diary form to tell a story. I really liked this book, and I plan to have my children read this book when they are old enough.
I'm going down the list of ALA's banned books and reading them just to see what the big hubbub is about and this was listed on their list. Unbelievable that this book is banned from schools. Too bad, because it's books like these that could save someone's life. You just never know. It's graphic, but very educational.
Yes, it's like an after-school-special, but what's so bad about that? I miss those cheesy-educational shows.
Don't ask..........2007-08-01
(This Amazon review is based on an actual diary kept by "Go Ask Alice" author, Beatrice Sparks. It is not a definitive statement on the veracity of authors or the written word. It does not offer any proof. It is, however, a highly personal and specific chronicle that foreshadowed the later works of James Frey, Augustus Burroughs, and J.T. Leroy. As such, we hope it will provide insights into the increasingly unbelievable literary world in which we live. Names, dates and places and certain events have been changed in accordance with the wishes of those concerned. Like the book, this review is a work of fiction. - The Editors)
September 16, 1968
Dear Diary, I came up with a brilliant idea: Write a make-believe story - but say it is nonfiction - about a teen drug addict. Maybe I can crib enough material from my work as a Mormon youth counselor to make it all sound real.
October 10
Oh, Diary, It's so much fun to write fiction. Whoops! I mean, nonfiction. My main character is an anonymous 15-year old girl from a two-parent, Christian (but secular) home in which the father is a professor of Political Science (maybe his permissiveness led to his daughter's fall from grace?). The mother is a homemaker and not one of those kooky, bra-burning feminist rabble-rousers like Sonia Johnson! (comment added later - Ed.)
June 15, 1969
I've added two Jews to the story. One is Beth Baum as the BFF (adolescent slang for "best friend forever"), and Sammy Green, who dates our tragic character shortly before she becomes an addict (an inciting incident, perhaps?).
July 14, 1969
Dear Diary, I can cross another evil off my list. Today our character wonders if she's more interested in girls than boys. It's not long now before she's mainlining heroin.
October 18, 1969
Who do those homosexuals in Stonewall think they are? I've added a man-on-man sex scene to show the evils of a liberal society that believes in the laws of men and not the laws of God. God made Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve!
Later
I'm conflicted. Should I write in bestiality, too? What wouldn't a drug-addicted slut do? I'm not sure since I'm making it all up as I go along.
(?)
Sweet friend, Diary, The climatic scene is straight out of Armageddon - tearing of hair, gnashing of teeth, breaking of bones, maybe an eye gouging or two. She's committed to a mental ward since her life of pleasure has been insane. She starts to pray "Now I lay me down to sleep"... I think this is called foreshadowing.
September 21, 1971
Today I sold the rights of, "Just Say No," to a big-time New York publishing house. They have changed the title to "Go Ask Alice," even though Alice isn't even the author. Beatrice, uh, Anonymous is. I wonder if teens will believe, I mean, buy this book....
wowee!.......2007-07-15
Go ask alice is one of the best book i have EVER read! i liked how it is the true diary of a girl my age and she isnt afraid to tell her true feelings about things. i couldnt put this book down and it taught me a real lesson about the use of drugs. READ THIS BOOK!

Annie's Baby: The Diary of Anonymous, a Pregnant Teenager

The torture and hell of adolescence has rarely been captured as clearly as it is in this classic diary by an anonymous, addicted teen. Lonely, awkward, and under extreme pressure from her "perfect" parents, "Anonymous" swings madly between optimism and despair. When one of her new friends spikes her drink with LSD, this diarist begins a frightening journey into darkness. The drugs take the edge off her loneliness and self-hate, but they also turn her life into a nightmare of exalting highs and excruciating lows. Although there is still some question as to whether this diary is real or fictional, there is no question that it has made a profound impact on millions of readers during the more than 25 years it has been in print. Despite a few dated references to hippies and some expired slang, Go Ask Alice still offers a jolting chronicle of a teenager's life spinning out of control.

Customer Reviews:
A misleading blah........2007-09-29
I read this book twice- at the age of about 16, and now, three years later. All I remembered from reading it for the first time was that I got mildly scared of peanut brittles (*the peanut brittle is spiked with acid at the end of the story, which Alice then ingests by accident and has the worst trip of her life*) and fate. I also for some reason was thinking that Alice was mostly on meth the whole time- until reading the book again today. What I hate most about it now is a complete misleading about drugs: basically mixing them all up in the same pile and labeling as "BAAAAD STUFF". Yeah, the book kinda describes the LSD giving you "trips" and hallucinations, and amphetamines making you "go faster", etc, but it labels all drugs as equally dangerous, addictive and violent. This is so not true! LSD, for example, is not addictive (no more than internet, speaking of psychologicall addiction); you cannot overdose on it, unless you eat like a whole pound of the stuff; life without it does not seem "dull and pointless", and it is relatively safe, if used properly. (The extremely bad, skin-tearing trip Alice had at the end of her diary does not seem realistic. The author tries to pull it off with killing both of Alice's grandparents, to induce stress for her, but still, the whole thing is way over the top. It looks much more like tortures of a heavy crystal meth addict.) Then, while marijuana is relatively addictive, using it does not lead to unpredictable, regrettable consequences, such as casual and unprotected sex with unknown people. Then, how come Alice gets "addicted" to acid, but not to heroin or other heavier drugs? That would make SO much more sense!
Another annoying aspect of the book is the old lady trying to sound like a teen. "Yes, yes, yes!" and "horrid, terrible awful" are the two basic moods for all the journal entries. The girl is either super happy or extemely sad and angry; rarely there's something in between- unrealistic! Then, what kind of real teenager would repeat, for example the word "glad" four times in a row in her diary? Also, REAL girls would focus somewhat more on defining ALL their problems (including grades, gossip, boys, etc), and somewhat less on a) repeating words/thoughts/phrases over and over (come on, it is WRITTEN DOWN, she's not just SPEAKING it!); and b) jotting down all insignificant details such as "we spent the whole evening decorating the stereo in such-and-such particular way". I mean, who cares? Also, REAL girls would probably not ever mention that someone raped them (or if they have the guts to, it would spill over many pages). Just think logically, what kind of girl would want to reread her diary and see an entry that goes somewhat like this: "Today was the worst day of my life. I got raped".
Well, anyways, my two cents are in for this book, and my two stars are all I am willing to give to it (one for good intentions, and one for being quite realistic from time to time). I'd say its worth your time and money (if you can find one for 50 cents, and since it will take you only about a hour to finish up the whole thing). As for the correct drug education, go watch "Requiem for a Dream" or read Erowid (real drug experiences by real people), and don't let yourself be mislead!
I DONT THINK I WANNA ASK ALICE.......2007-09-14
OKAY SO I HEARD THE NAME OF THIS BOOK ALOT AND I READ THE REVIEWS AND EVERYTHING BEFORE I READ IT....BUT MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE READ CRANK AFTER I READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE THE STORY IT SELF WAS GOOD AND I FELT SORRY FOR HER BUT THE BOOK WAS A REAL BORE AND I NEVER REALLY SAID THAT ABOUT ANY BOOK I EVER READ BUT IT GOT TO POINTS WHERE THE BOOK WAS REALLLLY BORING BUT THERE WERE EXCITING PARTS OF THE BOOK AND THEY DIDNT LAST VERY LONG... BUT I HAD TO MAKE MYSELF KEEP READING BECAUSE I NEVER QUIT ON A BOOK.....BUT HER STORY ITSELF WAS GOOD AND SOME TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPENED TO HER BUT IT DIDNT KEEP MY FULL ATTENTION
Mildly Entertaining / Teaches Some Good Morals.......2007-09-07
This is about a young girl and her tragic experiences with drugs. It teaches some helpful morals. The 'editor' claims that this a real life diary, but both internal and external evidence shows this is more likely a fabrication. I'm sure, though, that it wouldn't be too hard to find a real life situation that turned out just as tragic. Judged as a work of fiction, this book contains a rather weak ending (the conclusion depends too much on inference). It is also rather "graphic" for typical moralistic fiction.
*SPOILER* Not as Good as I Thought.........2007-07-06
(Note that this is the daughter of the person who owns this user account)
Let's just say two things - "Crank" was better, and this book has 214 pages in it and it got boring on page 114.
It has a bunch of twists and turns - first shes happy, then shes sad, then happy, then sad, then happy but gets tricked in taking LSD (again) by eating peanuts in a random persons home? Seriously.. and then she gets sent into a mental institution just for having bad hallucinations. Then she's home again and every thing's just peachy .. and then she dies? No sense at all. Read "CRANK"!!!! It is SOOOO much better!!
go ask alice .......2007-05-24
when i read the book go aks alice i thoughtnit was great. i would recomend this book to most people but i really think this book is more of a teenager thing than an adult book.that is beacuse this book talks about all the struggles and pressures that teenagers go through.also,it is a real diary that someone wrote so all of the actions she talks about are non-fiction and actually happend.i really belive that this book is awesome becaue of three resons.
1)she is a real person with real problems
2)she is very vivid in her diary and it gives so much info and details
3)she talks about how people start just a little bit of drugs the get adicted to it later on and then cants stop.
so i hope after reading this i hope u decide to read Go Ask Alice by anonymous.
i promise you one thing you wont be able to put this book down untill you finish it.
thank you for your time

Customer Reviews:
Kids, sex, life -- they all gotta come together somehow.......2003-11-17
At www.goaskalice.columbia.edu, there is one of the best sources for advice on sex, relationships, and health for people ages 14 and up. This book is the print version.
It has nothing to do with the adolescent potboiler written by Beatrice Sparks; its information on drugs and sex is technical, explicit, and meant to give answers, not scare people. The gamut of advice given runs from flirting to penis size to the effects of various drugs on the body to urinary tract infections, and it's delivered with humor and understanding, without the judgementalism that seems to be the case in many more traditional books.
While I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who hasn't hit their 13th birthday yet, this book is an antidote for prudishness and the information vacuum far too many young people live in, and in a world where basic information on sex and life can often be hard to find or heavily polluted by unnecessary moralism, this book can help ease fears and educate the uneducated in a way that scare stories and sermons can't.
Excellent factual information.......2002-03-02
This book fills a definite need for adolescents. It presents the facts, not fallacy, to all of the questions they have that parents and other caregivers may be too embarrassed to talk about. It is from an extremely reputable source (Columbia University), and is readable and accessible to the average teen. Kudos to the people who put together "The Go Ask Alice Book of Answers".
Read T-h-i-s GO ASK ALICE Book For Info On Health Issues.......1999-06-04
The review dated May 9, 1999 is not germain to this book, having a similar title to an earlier fictional book simply titled Go Ask Alice.
This book illustrates and discusses issues regarding healthy practices on many levels.
WAKE UP CALL.......1999-05-05
I think everyone should read this book especially every teenager. The wrighter of this journal went through just about everything. I could only imagine how it felt. Some of my peers at school read some short segments of Go Ask Alice and they couldn't believe how true and explictedly described it was. I also think this book could wake up some teens in this world and it could let them know that no matter what some of their peers may say drugs are not cool and they can ruin everything you want and everthing you have going for yourself just like it did for the writer of Go Ask Alice.

I feel the book "Go Ask Alice" was the best book i've ever read.I don't recommend this book to anyone under the age of twelve because it talks about explicit sex, drugs, and alcohol. This book talks and teaches about behavior and what happens when you're under the influence. This book will help young adults with feelings, peer pressure and actions. This is a book I highly recommend teenagers to read .I don't think that adults would want to read this because it talks about explicit sex, drugs, and alcohol.

Teenage life in the 1960's.......2001-06-05
This book was a good representation of teenage life in the 1960's. The story was told with the point of view of a teenager living in that time; therefore giving a first person powerful point of veiw. It was the type of book that brought you to the time, it makes you feel as if you are there and you can understand what is going on. I feel that it describes how a teenager deals with life in this time, including: love, friends, school and drugs. It is a fast pase, interesting book that allows your mind to explore the mind of Alice. It keeps you reading and gives you a taste of her life and her time. It is the closest you can get to actually living in that time and having those experiences. I would recomend any teenager to read this, it will give them the understanding of life in the sixties and the problems of a young person of that time.
'Go Ask Alice,' one of the best books I've ever read.......1999-11-13
It takes a truly good book for me to actually be able to get involved in. After beginning to read it I finally realized how real this person actually was, that she actually went through all these events that I read about in the book. It was a terrific idea to turn this into a book, it cautions us of the dangers and fears and trauma's of ones life that no one should ever have to face. And the horrific events that drugs, sex, depression and immaturity can cause. But there are many who do have to face those things. It helps us see the pressures that we are faced with everyday. I would definitly recommend this book to all teens and adults.
Impressionable.......1999-08-29
I read this book back in 1981. I was in 7th grade and at that time in school, just about every drug you could think of was easily accessable. A friend gave me the book and said make sure toSeattle, Washington REALLY listen to the words. It made me confused, angry, sad, and speechless. I did, however, end up trying a lot of different drugs that came my way during school. Thank God I never became addicted to any of them. I wish every child/teen/young adult was able to read it. It would be a good source of REAL information to possibly save some of the youth of today.

Book Description
Homstad describes one school district's attempt to answer two basic questions: What should students read? Who should decide what students read? The answers to these questions and how those answers were determined reveal fundamental institutional principles at work.

Re: "Go Ask Alice", "EDITED" by Beatrice Sparks.......2002-12-28
Re whether "Go Ask Alice" is a real diary: Do a google.com search for Go Ask Alice and Beatrice Sparks, the "editor" of the diary, who is also the "editor" of several other fascinating & well-written diaries by teenagers with problems.
is this for real?.......1998-06-25
I don't know if this is going to reach anyone or if anyone can answer this, but is this book really a real diary? I have always wondered this, because it seems very likely that it could have been made up to scare kids from doing drugs. Can anybody shed some light? Who published it, have the parents ever revealed themselves? Thanks.
