Come On! This book is 20 years old and people are reviewing it as if it's new! DUH! This book needs to be taken off the list, but Amazon doesn't want to do that, and why? Because they still have books to sell. Nevermind the fact that it draws stupid reviews from all sorts of idiots who think that material this old should still be accurate. Duh, Duh, duh, people.

5 out of 5 stars Outdated but not Outclassed.......2005-01-04

I know the Catskills very well. And I will tell you that this book is among the very best when it comes to the Catskills. I don't know about the Hudson Valley area too much except to say that those are the areas that change the most. But the Catskills don't change that much--because it's all state forest preserve and Forever Wild. Still a good deal for enthusiast, especially at the price! Kick's History and original research has been copied by many other writers.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-01-04

Fabulous--No matter if it's outdated. This book was written over 20 years ago, and has had no field updates (except for a contrived new edition foisted off by the publisher).
If only guidebooks of today were written as well--
A must for any serious hiker of the hudson Valley and the catskills!

5 out of 5 stars This is incredible!.......2004-12-04

This book is over 20 years old. The "new" author who joined Peter and Barbara did not update the book, as required by Backcountry contract, and the publisher didn't enforce it. so what you have here is essentially a 20-plus year old book with 2 newer hikes than the original edition and NO updated field information. The book is also out of print. Still, it remains an excellent book if used intelligently.

Why would Amazon allow/encourage reviews of out of print books as if they were current books? Of course such reviews are going to be come in from disoriented, angry hikers. Consider this.

1 out of 5 stars Do not use this book unless you want to get lost........2001-05-14

I agree with the other commentaries. The book is outdated. Trailheads and trails have changed too much to use this book.

It is good for finding Hikes - but take a hiking map with you (from Appalachian Mountain Club or elsewhere) and have a better day.

5 out of 5 stars My son first saw an older edition of the Atlas at a relative's house...........2006-08-02

As soon as we got home, I ordered the newest version for my son. He is 11 and very much into maps and geography. I don't understand the review from the School Journal that called this book "superficial." My son pours over the facts, pictures, and maps. Yes, it is a "pretty" book but it is also filled with much information for children. The Maps and Mapmaking sections were of particular interest to my son. We are planning to try a few of the projects as part of our homeschool this coming school year. All in all, this a good addition to a child's own library!

5 out of 5 stars From a Mom who knows........2001-11-09

My son (5 years old) loves this book. He likes for me to show him where on the maps we are and where we have been. He also likes to know where his extended family is located. (You have to love anything you can "sneak" some education in on.) It has excellent illustrations and interesting facts that will make this an enjoyable book for many years to come as my kids develope and expand their understanding capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars Much, much more than maps!.......2000-08-08

Don't be fooled by the word "atlas" - this lovely children's book contains much more than just maps! Facts, figures, "fun" information connected to the part of the world you are perusing. Beautifully illustrated, extremely readable. Interesting even for the adults in this family. Its oversized (coffee-table) dimensions make you want to plop down on the floor with the book spread out before you, and just look for an hour or so. Or you can simply turn to the area of the world that you're interested in (or doing a school report on) and get a few quick facts.

5 out of 5 stars Share the world with your children!.......2000-03-12

This book is excellent for teaching your children geography and world culture. It is very reader friendly and extremely interesting. It touches on all parts of the world with the most relevant information. We bought it for our 6 year old son for Christmas and now find it to be a fabulous birthday gift for other children. Unlike a toy that gets played with for a month and then thrown into the toy box graveyard, this book will be a favorite for many years both as general interest reading and as a reference for school projects. Don't miss this one...at a great price too!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.......2001-06-30

This book places an outline of world history in an attractive format. There are color maps and illustrations to accompany the highlights of different time periods. There are sections about languages, rulers, politics, agriculture, inventions, and more. A time chart with specific dates runs along the right hand page. Following the section about the twentieth century is a world time chart. On this chart, the dates run down the left and the names of the continents are across the top. This allows you, at a glance, to compare what was happening around the world. This atlas contains a glossary, index of maps, and general index as further study aids. An outstanding addition to home or class libraries.

        Book Description

An exciting pictorial atlas of past civilizations -- exploring the history of the ancient world from the Sumerians in 3500 BC to the Incas in AD 1500. Where did Alexander the Great fight the war elephants of King Poros? Who were the Assyrians and where did they live? How far did the Roman Empire stretch? Where did the Maya build their temples and palaces? The Atlas of Ancient Worlds reveals all this information, and much more. This new pictorial atlas looks at life in the ancient world -- from the great cultures of Greece, Rome, and the Middle east to the glittering cities of India, China, and the ancient Americas. Each civilization is illustrated with a beautiful full-color map featuring realistic scenes of how people lived and what crops they grew, their religious rituals and battle sites, as well as the trade routes that helped spread ideas and religions from one region to another. Lively text traces the progress and discoveries of each civilization and provides dramatic detail about the power struggles of ambitious rulers. Accurate reconstructions show the extraordinary architectural skill behind great structures, including the Parthenon in Greece the Great Wall of China, and the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. To complete the picture, stunning color photographs display the jewelry, tools, and weapons, architectural remains, and early writings that have helped experts piece together the story of the past. Packed with fascinating information and outstanding artwork, The Atlas of Ancient Worlds takes the reader on an exciting journey back in time.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Reference.......2003-05-01

The "Atlas of Past Times" found a permanent place on my coffee table. This book is absolutely loaded with illustrative maps, photos, and text. John Haywood has done to the pictorial record of world history what Kenneth C. Davis did for American history in his "Don't Know Much About History."

Time after time over the years I've heard or read about a particular civilization, war, political upheaval, or religious movement, but was unclear as to the specific timeframe and geographic scope. It's one thing to read about boundaries in text, but Haywood lays it all out in numerous maps. Each map is color-coded and loaded with useful information. The legends are clear and concise. A perfect example of how I found the book useful was in my following the war in Iraq. I didn't want to read six textbooks to gain a better understanding of the region's history. Haywood's book provides a fantastic visual overview: Mesopotamia, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Jews, the Arabs, the advance and subdivisions of Islam, the Kurds, the Turks, etc. The area has a long and convoluted history, which the maps really help place within grasp of the common man.

The accompanying text is only a cursory--but well written--examination of chronological world history, which is fine; it is titled and pitched as an "Atlas," and therein lies its strength and attraction. I will refer to this book again and again. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of BIG ICE

3 out of 5 stars for children, this book might have been better presented.......2000-08-06

Divided in two parts, this book chronicles the civilization of Ancient Egypt. The first part focuses on the history of Egypt from the earliest times to the Roman period. The second part takes the reader along the country and provides a detailed map of each region. The book fails as an atlas : the author provides too much information about the various aspects of the Egyptian daily life and society, and the maps have no stability. Offering a helpful glossary, this book, for children ages 9 to 12, has many illustrations regarding the Egyptian civilization.
