Book Description
Parish churches are England's glory. They enshrine the history of a people-their art, architecture, and faith. As public monuments, they house a gallery of vernacular art, from different periods and in a wide range of styles, that are without equal in the world. Award-winning English journalist Simon Jenkins has traveled the length and breadth of England to select his thousand best churches. Each entry is prefaced by a map locating the church and illustrated with full-color photographs from the Country Life Archive. Organized by county, each church is described, often with delightful asides, and is given a star rating from one to five, with the four- and five-star churches listed as the "hundred best." This complete guide is invaluable for anyone interested in touring England's best churches.

A good historico-geographic travelogue........2005-09-13
The historical background is good; very helpful as a travelogue. Author should have lessen his personal architectural taste. Splendid photos, specially the details. Good general information; but not so helpful for my purpose of getting ideas in designing small chapels.
1,000 Best Churches is the Best.......2005-09-03
This is a well-written and well-organized compendium of interesting churches throughout England. Useful for the those looking for the road less traveled (by other tourists.)
Not for the faint of heart!.......2004-11-12
This is an absolutely fascinating book that is indespensable if you are touring around England and want to see some amazingly lovely off-the-beaten-track places.
Mr. Jenkins has compiled a listing of one thousand churches throughout England that he feels are worth seeing. Each church is given a description, including a specific reason why it ranks among the top thousand. There is such a splendidly wide array of reasons: from architectural details, to unique contruction tecniques, to interesting historical context, that it never gets dull.
My parents are taking the book quite seriously, and are trying to visit each of the churches (I think they are a quarter of the way through, and their copy of this book is alrady completely covered with marginalia!). I have visited several of the churches with them, and always find the experience enlightening and interesting. Each church truly is unique, and it is always fascinating to see how.
Since the publication of the book, many of the churches that are on the list have taken an active interest in their own history. When my parents first started touring the churches, they were usually met by blank stares and a "why on earth do you care about our little church?" from the locals... but a few years later they find that frequently the whole community has rallied around the idea that they had an undiscovered treasure in their midst, and something to be quite proud of. For that reason alone, I think it's a great book.
Lovely, but could have been better........2002-06-07
In this book, Jenkins describes his choice of the thousand best churches in England. Churches range from tiny, rural chapels notable for their remote, dramatic settings, to grand and majestic churches. (Cathedrals, however, are not covered, only parish churches.) He also rates the churches from one star through 5 stars.
The descriptions are generally full and compelling. However, I took off one star from my rating, because, for the armchair traveller, more pictures would have been welcome. (How frustrating to read about glorious stained glass windows, and have no idea what they actually look like!) Only about one in 10 churches is illustrated with either an interior or exterior photo.
What an inspiration!.......2001-06-12
For those interested in knowing more about England's wonderful parish churches, this book is a must. Organized by county, the book should prove useful for travellers like me who fall victim to every village spire. I appreciated both his wit and knowledge about the subject.

The Best Book I've Read On The Topic of God's Love For Me.......2007-08-14
I've enjoyed a meaningful relationship with God for 37 years, and have read extensively on the topic of God's love for individual people. This is definitely the best, most specific, and down-to-earth book I've read on this topic. It has impacted my life and how I view God. It's very freeing indeed.
He Loves Me! The Relationship God Has Always Wanted with You.......2005-09-21
This book has made a huge difference in my life, and as a result I have not only purchased it for another person, but recommended it to several other people.
Do Yourself a Favor and Read This Book.......2000-07-07
Excellent insight. A logical, biblical foundation for a new framework for understanding God's intended relationship with His children. Love, rather than fear. Even if you don't consider your relationship with God to be based on fear or "appeasement" (I didn't either), this book will challenge you to reassess many of the traditions and approaches that dominate many in the Evangelical Christian Church. However, the book is not written from a critical point of view. A freeing book. Approach with an open mind. This book is having a strong, positive impact on my life. I have recommended it highly to several friends.

Tragic and tearjearking!.......2002-03-09
This book shows you how much Jessica and Nick love each other. How true love is everlasting...Poor Jess- you totally feel for her. All her true loves end up in disasters, first Sam, James, Christian, Louis, Mike, now Nick Fox? Sounds like they need a new plot for Jessica's life story if you ask me. Other then the obvious, it was a wonderful book.
Best book ever.......2001-07-10
Love me always was a great book. I loved how it sowed how much Nick Cares for Jessica. I thought they were always the greatest couple. The writer if this book{of whi I am a major fan} took her time in this book to show us that there is a will and a way. I also thought this book sad at the end though if you read this book you've got to read the next 3 after it. But although this book may be sad and make you cry, it is also guranteed to make you think. This book is the best ever. After you read this you'll never forget it and you'll never foprget Nick. I definitely reccomend this book to anyone who likes romance and a love story. Happy reading.
very very bad.......2000-11-09
ok why do all of jessicas serious boyfriends die. first in svh sam woodruf dies then james then christian. now in svu mike mcallery and now nick. this book was very bad
Oh, no! It can't be true!.......2000-08-16
Hi, everyone! This book just can't be beat . . . and can't be true, either! At the end of the book, Jessica goes to the courthouse to be with Nick and seeks upstairs with him to be alone. Afterwards, she is forced to leave and when she arrives at Dickensen watches the verdict with her sister. But something tragic happens on the TV in the lounge . . . something that will change her life forever . . . Liz and Tom are at it again . . . love and war! Not that I blame Liz for breaking up with Tom in the end - he lied about something VERY important - his relationship with Dana! Liz deserves better, but I hope that if the time is ever right and Tom learns his lesson, he and Liz will find their ways back together! I am also glad to know that Izzy woke up, and sad to hear she has no memory . . . good and bad for Danny! Let's hope she recalls everything! Well, that's about it, except that to get the inside scoop, you've gotta read this book!
Wow, what an amazing and tragic story!.......2000-08-16
Jessica and Nick are the best couple . . . how could this book end the way that it did? Nick Fox has been a great edition to the SVU storyline! I hope that the ending isn't true and that they can find their ways back together again! Liz and Tom were at it again . . . love and war! Can you believe Tom's nerve lying to Liz like he did? I mean, how low can you get? Elizabeth was right to dump him, but I hope he realizes where he went wrong. If he does, then I'd have to say that he'd actually be my favorite of Elizabeth's loves . . . but he's not very popular with me right now!

Tales Of Revenge, Madness, Humiliation, Coming To Consiousness, Pain!.......2005-09-21
In Will You Always Love Me, the flawless Joyce Carol Oates reversed a decade-long trend of writing explorations of the many facets of love among late-century couples, by returning to the delightfully complicated sorts of tales she reveled in during the early 1980's. These dyed-in-the-wool Gothic stories, set amid the familiar miscellanae of modern life, compel the reader to see existence within American society from a point of view slanted toward the harsh secret mindscapes that are concealed within each and every one of us, no matter how shallow we might outwardly appear. By establishing us as concealed voyeurs who look on into the lives of the characters in these tales, and by stripping us of our acceptance of the mundane majority of daily goings-on, we pass with Oates' aid into a state of hyper-realization and see things in these stories better than those who dwell within them: we see things as they ARE. No other writer achieves this quite as skillfully as Joyce Carol Oates. My favorite among these stories was the one in which the still-attractive middle-aged neighbor woman plotted a sexual liaison with a teenage boy she believes she has seduced. The rather frightened boy timidly admits to his mother what the woman has planned, and the mother, with the strategic brilliance of a maternal warrior set on protecting her offspring, expertly arranges the other woman's abject humiliation and in the process no doubt crumbles the would-be temptress' self-image to its heavily made-up foundations. That is viciousness doled out with a minimalism that is an Oatesean trademark. This story and nearly two-dozen others await inside Will You Always Love Me, Joyce Carol Oates' finest collection in many years.
Joyce Carol Oates does it again!.......2004-10-31
Joyce Carol Oates's short-story collections get better and better each time I pick one up. This is one of the most beautiful, haunting, dark collections ever written. This time Oates tackles American life with unflinching honesty. The stories in this collection touched me to the core. Oates has such a vivid, incredible imagination. My favorite stories are "You Petted Me, and I Followed You Home," "The Missing Person," "The Girl Who Was to Die," "The Goose Girl," "The Brothers," and "The Vision." Some of the stories are poignant, others have a touch of humor and there are those that are all out sinister. One thing is certain: they are all dark and thought provoking. Joyce Carol Oates is one of my favorite authors. Her lurid tales haunt me long after reading them. I cannot wait to read one of her full-length novels. I cannot recommend Will You Always Love Me? enough.
Master Stories from a Master Storyteller.......2000-07-10
Joyce Carol Oates has really outdone herself with this collection. These stories are wonderful and are Oates at the top of her game. Each story is so well crafted and hauting, she gives you little slices of American life, each one revealing a different aspect of that life. She usually focuses on some seamliness, something dark, something sinister, but manages to keep the stories enjoyable to read. I highly recommend this collection. Oates fans will not be disappointed and for those who are not familiar with her work, it is the perfect introduction.
Excellent!.......2000-04-24
This is a superb collection from one of the greatest short-story writers. Stories like 'Handclasp' and 'Mark of Satan' are certainly on par with the best of Oates' more famous stories: 'In the region of Ice' or 'Heat'.
A fearsome portrait of the human experience........1998-01-07
These stories remind us of what we all know but will not admit to. Sparing no one, Oates cuts to the bottom of every-day life and brings up the truth. Her prose is precisely calculated to make the reader fidget. In "The Revenge of the Foot, 1970", a woman, fascinated with an amputated foot some medical students are tossing about, steals it and deposits it into her lover's freezer knowing that his wife will find it. In "The Passion of Rydcie Mather", an introverted school bus driver decides to kill her passengers after coming to the conclusion that they deserve death . Oates gives no explanations and makes no excuses for her characters' behavior, instead relying on the conviction that they are emotions we have all felt (yet perhaps not acted on). The book is ended with the reader's solemn thought: "That could be me."

An Essential Devotional.......2002-01-19
Michelle McKinney Hammond's devotional, His Love Always Finds Me is a must for those who wish to "launch into the deep". As always, this author encouraged me to take a deeper look at myself against the backdrop of scripture.
My only regret about the book is that I didn't get it sooner.
Absolutely Wonderful--I Love The Lord!!!!!!!.......2001-11-07
Michelle has a wonderful gift and a blessed way of communicating Biblical insight to readers. I love Jesus so much and reading this book helps me to feel like I'm getting to know Him more. I'll admit that sometimes I find the Bible hard to read. This book makes the Bible come alive and presents many great stories of the Bible in a more narrative form. It helps us to increase in the knowledge of God in a way that many of us would find almost entertaining. Be blessed everyone. Michelle, I'm writing a song to go with the title of this book!
Inspiring.......2001-08-01
The author uses examples with people from the Bible for everyday situations of how God was there for them. She let's you know God is with you no matter the situation.

Secrets of An Irresistible Woman.......2000-10-31
First of all, I want to thank God for depositing such a gift in Michelle. A gift to help women (Christian women) set standards in their lives(not compromising)and stand by those standards.
Initially, a girlfriend of mine was given this, I already had the book "What to do Until Love Finds You" and when she said the name Michelle I literally finished her name. I knew that this book would be great.
Because I am a Christian woman, I have read several books written by wonderful women of God but I found that each author is unique in their own style and message. This book has encouraged me to continue to live my life as God has predestined and preordained me to do. This book has also made me proud of who I am and that waiting on God for the mate He has for me is worth it all.
I recommend every woman read this book to get the secrets of a woman that will be irrestible to every man.
You go Michelle.

A children's story which is sure to touch adults........2002-05-14
I first heard this story read at a funeral and was moved to tears. Not that the story is sad, on the contrary it is a wonderful way to explain the concept of eternal life and reassuring to all that death is not an end. The writer's illustrations are gentle and charming. I can't wait to read this story to all my grandchildren.
