Only Touches on a Few Places .......2006-04-16
I picked up this book with higher hopes than it delivered. I was expecting a guide book to all the eccentric festivals and weird places to see and take photographs of but Eccentric America definitely is not that. Whilst the book goes into depth with a lot of festivals the author doesn't put the same effort into attractions with sparse detail on the little number of places actually listed. I've extensively backpacked the USA and most of the weird attractions I came across are not even mentioned here. There is also a severe lack of photographs. Obviously the author attended a car show somewhere because that's what the majority of the six photograph pages are of. You'll find more eccentric attractions in the normal USA travel guide books than in here.
The Best Book for Driving Around.......2004-09-27
This is really a top notch book for the guys that like to get in a car and drive down the state highways - avoiding the interstates. "Eccentic" = don't be scared off buy that - this is not a book of weird stuff - just FUN stuff. This is one of those landmark travel books that comes out every now and then. The author really did the homework to get it all down in print.
Fun is contageous.......2004-07-30
Eccentric America leapt off the book shelf and into my hand. Many uncontrollable chuckles and a few tears of laughter later, I exited the book shop with two copies. Within five merry, laughter-filled minutes the eleven year old son of a friend said, "Thanks, Tom," took a copy, and commenced planning his family's upcoming road trip to LA. We're all going adventuring together, thank you.
Janet has created a classic guide that has loaded my life with kinky, wierd and fascinating now and in-the-future destinations of interest, erstwhile she has filled my soul with laughter, laughter and more laughter.
A bit of local adventuring initiated by Janet's cook book of wierd and wacky, and I was thinking, "I've got an idea or two for you, Lady." Then I visited her website. Oh my god, the adventure bug is contageous. Just can't wait for what Janet and her team comes up with next.
A guide to the wackiness in America.......2003-10-27
Coming as a breath of fresh air, Eccentric America highlights many of the things you won't find in Fodor's. Region by region and state by state we are taken through those things in America that are "eccentric" - offbeat, strange and unique places, people, lodging, restaurants and festivals. I may be a bit biased with my alma mater being included in the book (Jumbo's ashes) but I found the guide refreshing and a wonderful to leaf through and read. Some of the things you find here is that some of the more offbeat events highlighted are different, but not unique. Who would have guessed how many testicle festivals there are in the US? The listings give you a quick synopsis of what it is and why it's included, then you are told where it is, and how to contact someone for more information. Some of the things are sites that I'll never visit, but it's interesting to know about them. Others are now on the list for visits when I'm going on vacation in the future. If you love things like "Roadside America," then you'll want this one too. Anyone can plan a vacation to see historical sites or amusement parks, but with this book you can include a miniature golf course in the basement of a funeral home on your itinerary. Laugh out loud and head scratching events await the adventurous or the adventurous armchair traveler.
Long, strange trip... but a short read!.......2002-06-26
What would America be without eccentrics? Pretty dull. But thanks to Janet's unique travel guide, there's no excuse for a boring roadtrip. "Eccentric America" will make you forget about cashing in all those accumulated frequent flier miles and inspire you, instead, to take to the open road in search of the "Museum of Pez Memorabilia" or the "Cockroach Hall of Fame."
Bring the inlaws!

I thought this would have more places to see.......2007-06-08
and less festivals and such. I wanted places that I could visit any time, not just at certain times of the year. It does have some interesting things in it, but not enough of what I was looking for.
Quirky road trips.......2007-05-10
This book was helpful but didn't have the "townie" attractions so to speak but we had and are having fun with it!!!
Better then the first edition!!!.......2005-04-09
I wrote this about the 1st edition : This is really a top notch book for the guys that like to get in a car and drive down the state highways - avoiding the interstates. "Eccentric" = don't be scared off buy that - this is not a book of weird stuff - just FUN stuff. This is one of those landmark travel books that comes out every now and then. The author really did the homework to get it all down in print. ==== Now all that has changed is that it is BETTER. We sell this book in our gift shop - it is the best seller. What I like about it is that the author does not make fun of her subjects like other wacky travel guides. Also the amount of details is really handy to the traveler who likes details.

Great Gift!.......2004-07-31
Whether you're traveling across America or just enjoy reading about the strange festivals and peoples across the US, this book would make a great coffee table/bathroom reading book! The map to eccentricity is fantastic, showing the spread of eccentricity isn't what you would necessarily stereotype (we're not all in California!) Anyone who wants to discover unusual facts about Americans and their odd celebrations will love this book.

A review for volume 8 .......2005-05-10
{Note: I put this review on the page for Volume 8 of Girl Got Game, but for some reason Amazon has put this review under other volumes.}
Here's the summary given by Tokyopop (the summary Amazon has written is for a different volume):
"The perfect combination for love: magical mushrooms and steamy hot springs! Imai decides that the basketball team should go on a mushroom gathering trip to the hot springs. During the trip Kensuke tells an annoyed Chiharu that he's asked Kyo to go steady with him. To spice things up, Kyo and Chiharu mistakenly eat some mushrooms, which make them behave in rather uncharacteristic ways - like confessing their love for each other! Is it love brewing or are the mushrooms doing the talking?"
This volume was as hilarious as the others. Between the hijinx and misunderstandings this book had me cracking up all the way through. And what's great about this volume is that we finally get to see a progression in Chiharu and Kyo's relationship.
Just as the summary said, these two end up in a pretty close encounter when they eat some bad mushrooms on a school trip. But just when you think those two might finally go somewhere, Kyo and Kenseke end up in a pretty "interesting" position . . . one you just have to see. But not to worry, this just helps to set the stage for some honesty in feelings between Kyo and Chiharu.
I would highly recommend getting this volume . . . as a matter of fact I would highly recommend getting the entire series. It is just sooo funny. It will have you rolling on the floor in fits of laughter.
I love this series........2004-12-19
Shizaru Seino has created an awesome series. She acts like she knows so much about basket ball, yet in an interview with Seino from volume 2, she doesn't even know how to play basketball. If I had a conversation with her, I'd tell her she should play basketball, considering I've played basketball for years.
In the last book, a new character, Kensuke Yura, appears. He's very smart and has played basketball before, yet he hasn't shown up for practice for such a long time. But Kyo convinces him to come back. At Kyo and Yura's first practice together, Kyo finds out that Yura doesn't really have a good relationship with the other players.
Then an accidental encounter leads up to a big misunderstanding involving...Chiharu, the guy who is ticked off everyday about something different. But something happens that totally leaves Kyo in the dust.
What is it? Read the book and find out ^_^.
A must Read!!!!.......2004-12-09
This is one story you wouldnt want to miss!!! A story of a girl that got enrolled into a cool school by her father.. its almost perfect, or so she thought.. Until she found out that she got enrolled as a "BOY". Follow how is she going to resolve her predicament, specially when she starts to like a boy, who is by the way her roommate and also a teammate in basketball. What is she going to do??
This Manga, is soo funny that is addicting. Full of Lovable Characters, crazy antics and will just keep you asking for more!!!!
You havent read this yet, piece of advice!! A MUST READER!!
Good series... however.......2004-06-23
The review format is out of whack. I've seen stuff for Volume 2 marked under the section for Vol 4 or 8. This says it is Volume 10, but likely this very review title is wrong. If this is Volume 10, Volume 10 is the last of the series. The situation with her is resolved finally with her recently being discovered to be female. Is she allowed to stay, and will she find the boy of her dreams? You'll have to find out, I haven't read it either.
MUST READ.......2004-06-10
For all shoujo anime/manga fans out there, this is a must read! Of course, that's only my opinion. I really liked this series and I have already finished reading all of it in Chinese. Also, go read Fruits Basket and HANA-KIMI!!!!
Book Description
Millions of girls are now running, swinging bats and shooting hoops. Here's the first young readers' anthology of new fiction that tells their stories."Girls Got Game features a new breed of heroines who are not afraid to sweat. Young athletes will see themselves in these stories; their mothers will wish they'd had books like this when they were growing up."-Sue MacySue Macy, author of three popular nonfiction books on women in sports, has gathered the best fiction writers and poets to describe the in-the-moment experiences of the millions of girls who are now competing. Here's the first anthology to describe being on the field the way girls are enjoying it today -- as a regular part of their lives that is allowing them to compete, to excel, to feel their own power and potential, and to face defeat and emerge stronger for the next contest. From basketball to soccer, tetherball to swimming to horseback riding, Girls Got Game breaks new ground. This all-star lineup of authors and poets includes Virginia Euwer Wolff, Jacqueline Woodson, and Sue Macy herself in her fictional debut, creating a book that is a great read, as well as an affirmation of what girls are doing every day.

girls got game.......2001-11-20
Good short stories about triumph and overcoming obstacles. Not boring and certainly holds the attention. The endings leave a little to be desired. The stories end on a good feel, but never come out and tell you what happened. You're left with the impression that it ended well. My 10 year old daughter enjoyed the stories. Thumbs up on this one!

Started out good...ended up with WTF!?.......2007-03-18
I started reading this manga and was very happy to find yet another good manga to read. I seem to be attracted to the whole girl-acting-as-a-guy type of manga. So the story started off good. It was about a girl pretending to be a boy so she can play basketball. But as the story continued...and neared the ending...I discovered that it was becoming very dumb. The plot kinda died and people were acting in stupid ways and I'm sorry but I do not advise you to read it. It's kinda odd to right a review like this. I'm trying to explain this in the best way possible so here you go.
Beginning = GOOD. ^-^
Ending = GAHH. WTF!?!!?!? D
<
LOL This series is a must read!.......2006-07-11
This is just one of those mangas you can't help but become addicted to. The story is SO CUTE! And it's hella funny. Kyo (the girl posing as a guy) is not your normal manga style girl, she seems to be more guy-ish (espically once you get to vol.6 and up-she seems to have a perverted mind-) It was non stop laughs when I was reading this book ( I was kicked out of my school library for laughing too loud..*cough*). The art style is also very well done, the funny expressions will catch you off gaurd :p Bottom line: TRY THIS SERIES!-you won't regret it----
Awesome book!.......2006-01-27
I'msure if you've read the other reviews, then you know what this book is about by now.
I really loved this series. It's a bit like a modern-day Mulan, only the main character was forced to do something against her will, while Mulan was completely on her own with the important decision.
Awesome for teens. Especially if you like basketball. Highly recommended!
A Teenagers Review of Girl Got Game.......2005-12-20
Girl Got Game is one of my favorite manga series. I haven't read that many series, but i still like it a lot. Its about a girl who's dad loves basketball, but when he was in collage he injured himself and couldn't play nationally, so he enrolls her as a boy in a co-ed school so she can play basketball as a guy for him.
She meets a guy who she hates at first, but eventually falls in love with, and its just a really nice story of a girl who has some problems but gets over them and falls in love along the way. I like the story most because she learns to like a guy she once hated, which shows that you can fall in love with anyone, no matter who they are, and i can personally relate to that (not with a guy i hate, but a friend who was very unexpected). So yeah, i think its a great manga, probably more for girls than guys but whatever.
Cute Shoujo!.......2005-11-21
Power!! (Girl Got Game) is a very good shoujo series. It's about girl named Kyou Aizawa, who ends up entering a high school known for 1. their very cute uniforms, and 2. their elite basketball team. It turns out that Kyou ended up entering the school as a GUY rather than a girl (poor Kyou, she didn't get to wear the pretty uniform>_
< this was all her dad's plan).
So, anyway, when Kyou started school, she met Eniwa Chiharu, who is on the team. She didn't have a very good start with getting to know him, and later, they end up being roommates in their dorms.
Kyou has to go through many difficulties to be act as a guy and not be found out. When taking a bath, she has to make sure that the coast is clear, and that no one would come in, so she takes it while everyone else is having dinner. She has to wear the boys' uniform, and so no one will become suspicious, she also straps down her chest.
This is all I'm willing to share, for those who have not read this series. Good series, and has the same cuteness as Seino-sensei's other works, such as Heaven!!, and Suki Suki Darin (those aren't released in the US yet. I read from scanalations).
If you read this series, you will find it has similarities to Hana-Kimi. Well, good reading! Ciao! (I wanted to say that, just telling you I'm not Italian or anything of that matter.)

umm.......2007-03-06
I am not a real fan for Zoey. Its ok but not the best but maybe I have a different tasted in books. Its ok but I don't really like it.
Best Book Ever !!!!.......2006-10-03
I give this book five stars, I belive it shows kids my age the drama you get with bullies, and your closest friends. If you read this book I think you'll love it. It's a great book, for kids that have kids picking on them, this book will show you that it's ok to stick up for yourself. It's ok to ask for help, some kids go through it every day. If you read it, you'll love everything about it, and you don't need to care what anybody else thinks , just be youself .That's what Zoey Brooks did!
Great Book.......2006-02-12
This is one of the best books i've read. Although I knew what would happen next because i've seen those to episodes the book is based on, I still think that it is a very fun book that girls would enjoy and have a lot of fun with.
good, but targeted towards a younger audience.......2005-11-14
this book was an easy read, and very short, however, i enjoyed it.i would recommend it to someone around 9 because they would enjoy it more than some1 my age
