Customer Reviews:
The book is great for what it is.......2007-08-01
All of the books in this series take one personality trait of a famous person and talk about it. The trait they chose for Jefferson was that he liked to eat. The fact that the "feast" happened over several parties as opposed to one meal is not an important enough piece of "fiction" to justify saying that the book is bad. The book does not talk about Slavery. That is covered in the book about Harriett Tubman, which is also a very good book. This is a Step Into Reading book, not a complete history of Thomas Jefferson book. Although the reading level is 2nd - 4th grade, the content is PreK - 1st.
Where are the slaves?.......2007-02-20
There are enough facts about Thomas Jefferson to easily fill a book hundreds of pages in length. So why, a reader might wonder, would an author choose to even partially fictionalize a 48-page-long children's book. Six pages are filled with specific information about a feast that did not take place, and although clarified in the author's note, it seems that young children are unlikely to distinguish fact from fiction in a biographical book. Additionally, the idea of a man who owned 100-200 slaves at any given time preparing an entire feast by himself is nonsensical. Only two pages portray slaves: one shows a smiling man at the door of a dumbwaiter; another, two small figures working the land. Their almost-absence, when recounting the life of a man whose existence depended so heavily on their labor, borders on revisionism. The illustrations are very good; the factual parts of the story are excellent; and the inclusion of several French words, complete with meanings and pronunciation, is a bonus; but the truth is overly bent. Abe Lincoln's Hat by Martha Brenner, another in the Step Into Reading series, is equally good, but all true.
Terrific Book! .......2004-08-15
This is a wonderful children's book about our third president (US). It provides a fun story about how he loved to read and write and eat! He brought foods back from France that weren't popular here and made them famous. Jefferson got people to finally try love apples or tomatos, thought to be poisonous here in the US, but eaten often in France.

This beloved old French fairy tale has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. Beauty, as you may recall, is the youngest daughter of a devoted father who has fallen on hard times. Returning from a journey, he picks a rose for his daughter, enraging the owner of the rosebush, the fearsome boarlike Beast who inhabits a nearby castle. As payment for the rose, Beauty must leave her family and reside in the Beast's castle as his companion. She gradually comes to appreciate the Beast's kind nature, and, after leaving him to visit her family, realizes that she has fallen in love! Beauty willingly returns to her Beast, in time to break the spell that has caused his current, beastly countenance and restore him (and the servants in the castle) to their human forms.
Jan Brett--well-known for her artistry in Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Mitten--has worked her usual magic on this beautiful edition of Beauty and the Beast. In a unique visual spin on the story, the tapestries hung on the walls of the Beast's castle reveal the true identities of the animal servants who are under the same spell as the Beast--a subtle, fascinating feature that may not be noticed until the second or third reading. The story's old-fashioned and graceful language perfectly accompanies the French court setting. One of the finest takes on this classic tale, Brett's Beauty and the Beast is described by Kirkus Reviews as "a lovely, carefully made edition of an old favorite." (Ages 5 to 8)
Book Description
From the Broadway stage to the silver screen, this timeless fairy tale continues to enchant millions. The story of a beautiful young woman's love for a cursed prince is here retold for beginning and reluctant readers.
Customer Reviews:
What Fairy tales are supposed to be!!!.......2002-08-10
Jan Brett's illustrations are so colorful and richly drawn that you could tell the story without the words if you wanted to. Her illustrations are magical.
This book is a wonderful telling of the fairy tale. The true meaning of the tale comes shining through. The illustrations bring life to the printed words.
You will love this book.
Beautiful illustrations.......2002-06-22
Jan Brett's books are always richly and beautifully illustrated. There is always a little extra "story" in the illustrations. In this one, you will be watching the animal servants throughout the book. Pay close attention to the tapestries in the background to see who these animals really are. My favorite are the monkeys. This version is very much like the original French fairy fale, and is well told.
Gorgeous!!.......2001-09-11
I got this book years ago when I worked for the publisher. I've given this book as a gift many times. The illustrations are just breathtaking and whimsical. You will find yourself stopping and searching the pictures in the middle of the story. The story is very nicely done and my kids enjoy it much more than the Dineyized version storybook they have.

Best version of Beauty and the Beast.......2000-01-31
This version of Beauty and the Beast is well written, beautifully illustrated, and makes the moral point of the story quite clear. It is the nicest I've ever seen. Forget the movie and get this book instead.

Customer Reviews:
As good as it can be, while trying to scrunch a movie into a kids book.......2007-08-23
This is a fun book to read to my kids, with a good story and some words and concepts that are challenging to my kids, such as "chef" and "Paris". On the downside, I don't think the illustrations are as realistic as I would like to see, and another downside to the illustrations is that I can't easily point out the links between the words and the illustrations.
Although the text is very well written, my understanding with kids is that they don't work well with fast-paced change, and because of that, there are too many different jumps from one movie scene to another for me to be more than 50% (3 stars) comfortable with the book as a parent.
How Remy the Rat Became a Chef.......2007-06-06
"Remy was a rat. His job was to smell the garbage. He made sure it was safe to eat. But Remy did not like his job." -- From the book
In June 2007, Disney/Pixar will be releasing the animated movie Ratatouille (pronounced rat-a-too-ee) which pairs a chef named Linguini who can't cook--with a Rat named Remy who CAN...and quite brilliantly, it turns out.
The Big Cheese chronicles Remy's rise from the garbage dumps to the kitchen of the fine restaurant Gusteau's in Paris--all the while avoiding the head chef who obviously DOESN'T want a rat in his fine restaurant!
In the meantime, Remy tries to teach Linguini how to cook while avoiding detection. (The food critic, Ego, loves the food--but who REALLY makes the dish?! Too funny--a food critic named Ego!)
This is a Step 2 "Step Into Reading" book by Random House and is geared towards ages 5-6 and up. Step 2 books have basic vocabulary, short sentences and simple stories so they're great for beginner readers--and for bedtime stories!
My son loves this colorful book (he read it to ME before bedtime!), but if you (or your child) don't want to know some of the events in Ratatouille, you may want to wait until AFTER you see the movie to get it.

Book Description
Daisy wakes up one morning and finds that she has turned into a chicken. Instead of worrying her pretty little feathers about it, she hops off as best she can to have a chicken adventure. But who knew that being a chicken would put you in such danger? This delightful Step 2 book lets readers know whether being a chicken is all it's cracked up to be.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully Colorful and Imaginative!.......2000-10-21
Chicken for a Day is filled with all of the special stuff it takes to give your child a fun and imaginitive good read! With illustrations bursting with beautiful colors- Bold, humorous, and energetic throughout, each page got MY early reader not only READING, but having a really great time as well! We hope to see more like this one!
Wonderfully Silly Story!.......2000-10-13
This is a delightfully silly book with wonderful wacky illustrations about a girl who turns into a chicken. A perfect book for those just learning to read.
Very Silly Book with Zero Appeal.......2000-10-12
A little girl named Daisy wakes up one day to discover she has, for no real explained reason, turned into a chicken. Her parents do no seem at all shocked when their daughter the chicken clucks into the kitchen for breakfast. She turns down her usual egg in favor of picking at some corn flakes. She goes out to the bus only to be refused admittance. The story goes on from here.
There are so many delightful easy to read books being developed for beginning readers. There are books that do not talk down to beginning readers. These stories have real plot lines and tell a story. This is not one of those delightful books. Any book needs to explain the why and how. The reader is never told how or why Daisy woke up as a chicken; or why she turned back into a little girl that evening. I am willing to suspend all belief if the story is good and the writer allows me to do that.
