Book Description
From the snowcapped Himalayas and the Indus valley, to the Ganges delta and the Sri Lankan forests, the Indian subcontinent is home to 13% of the world's species of birds and thousands of birders and ecotourists flock to the area every year. This field guide will be indispensable to those who wish to find and identify the many species of avifauna of the Indian subcontinent and environs.
Featuring more than 150 color plates by eminent bird illustrators from Europe and India, it depicts all the known species in the region, ranging from the Himalayan Snowcock in the north to the Sri Lanka Spurfowl in the south. The plates include all relevant identifiable subspecies, as well as ages and sexes. It contains hundreds of range maps and the succinct text on the facing pages covers identification, voice, and distribution. Specially designed for use in the field, it is a compact version of the landmark A Guide to the Birds of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, hailed on its publication as a "stunning book" that "advanced the cause of Indian birding by 20-30 years." With its modest price, small trim size, and sturdy, weather-resistant binding, this field guide is the one volume that every adventurous traveler to the Indian subcontinent must have.
Customer Reviews:
Only book we needed.......2006-03-08
We bought a second reference because it's hard to know which plates will help amateurs like us identify the species in a place we've not previously visited. However, with the plates, the maps, and the generally brief, but accurate descriptions, this was the only book we needed to quickly identify the over 100 species we spotted on our trip. The soft cover made it easier to stuff into one of our binocular bags.
The birder's companion to India.......2005-04-13
Going to India? BUY THIS BOOK. Truly a definitive guide to the birds of India, absolutely user-friendly in the field. Accurate slates and distribution diagrams will help you determine, very briskly, the bird you are looking at. This is important in India because there are tons of birds. Morphological and behavioural characteristics are also defined in this intense field guide. Importantly, this is easy to access, it doesn't make you bounce back and forth 3 times from the slate. Pointers on the slate also help you to quickly make distinctions between similar birds. This field guide makes birding fun and an ease. Colourful slates, smart layout, if only all field guides could be this good.
At long last..........2000-04-12
Finally, a complete, comphrensive FIELD guide to the birds of India! Gone are the days of hauling 2 or 3 hardcover bird books to the subcontinent just to be able to identify relatively common species. The drawings in this book are excellent, the descriptions very detailed, and the range maps very helpful. My two criticisms are that birders familiar with the common names in Salim Ali's "The Book of Indian Birds" will be confused with the revised nomenclature in this guide (based on the Inskipp's Indian Checklist); some changes are relatively minor, while others are so dramatically different (and frankly puzzling) that cross-referencing is a chore. The second involves the seperation of many of the range maps from the plates and descriptions, sometimes by many pages. This was due to the large number of species featured on some plates- there just wasn't enough room for the maps also. A better strategy might have been to put them all in the back of the book. But the benefits of this book far outweigh the shortcomings- my next trip to India promises to be more rewarding and productive bird-wise (as well as easier on my back)due to this excellent and overdue field guide.

Customer Reviews:
Invaluable for tourists who plan visit the Maldives.......2006-03-27
Like all Lonely Planet guides, a mine of useful information, that proves invaluable in picking the resort that best suits your interests and pocket. A good section on diving and snorkelling. Well worth the money.
LP Maldives.......2004-11-02
I find this guide very useful in terms of choosing the resorts. It has good descriptions of all the resorts in terms of facilities, clients, food served and activities. The resorts are in different chapters according to the different atolls. So, it is a good guide for choosing the right resort according to one's taste
A good place to start..........2002-08-26
There are four main tour books for the Maldives, and this one is a good place to start. (Another good one is the Michelin guide.) This book gives a general overview of the islands and many of the resorts. Divers will want the Divers' Guide to the Maldives to fill out the information here.
Maldives-The lost paradise.......2000-06-22
It was a good book about an overview of Maldives but did not focus much on the interior travel within Maldives and getting around its myriad of islands

Book Description
Despite the reputation of the Maldives as being a world-class diving destination, this is the first really comprehensive fish guide specifically aimed at these islands. More than 50 new species for the Maldives are published for the first time and, with over 1100 superb underwater photographs that include almost every fish that divers are likely to see, this book is the perfect guide to check on that mystery' fish after each dive. The book is compact, easy to use and a handy size to carry to dive locations. The introduction explains the basics of fish-science, behaviour and evolution and there are detailed drawings on fish features, shapes and colour patterns. To assist divers, an innovative concept is used to allow easy retrieval and identification of species. Small silhouettes of the families are distributed as thumbprints throughout the book and families are color coded for quick access. Whilst text for each species is brief, it describes points of interest and differences between similar species. This book portrays the fishes from this respected author's practical point of view and divers can expect to learn a great deal from this valuable reference.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, thorough, comprehensive..........2002-08-26
I am not a marine biologist, but I would guess that the professionals would be delighted with this offering. This book is well organized, thoughtful, clear, and well done. Scuba divers will appreciate it, I am sure, and I anticipate seeing many of the creatures pictured here myself in the not-too-distant future, on a holiday dive. Good job! This book makes one's anticipation more eager.
Diver's Bible to the Maldives.......2000-04-18
If you are a scuba diver or plan to snorkel in the Maldives, do yourself a favour and get hold of this masterpiece. The book is loaded with species not found in other books and the best I have seen on the Maldives. The photos are excellent and are as you will observe them underwater. Some may consider this dull, but it is really the way you will see them. The colour idex is extremely helpfull and will be of great benefit in you search for the fish you just saw ! Another unique feature is the fact that for most species the author has included photos of the juvenile and females to assist in identification. The layout is somewhat compressed and could have been more clear and uncluttered. The common names are not always the preferred or most common ones, but the scientific names are always correct. Enjoy the Maldives ... it is a great place to be !
Book Description
Scattered like rings across the Indian Ocean, the 26 atolls that comprise the Maldives are a diver's mecca. Encompassing channels, pinnacles and walls, the sites here have lyrical names that match their beauty. Prolific fish life ranges from funny little blennies to massive, friendly Napoleonfish. Divers are transported to the reefs on colorful traditional dhonis and luxurious safari dive boats. This book describes 78 of the best sites in the Maldives, with full-color photos taken in the wake of El Niño damage.
You'll get specific information on:
- dive site topography and access
- safari boats, including contact information
- resort islands across the archipelago

Customer Reviews:
Maldives-A diving Mecca.......2004-10-29
If you are planning a SCUBA diving trip to the Maldives I would recommend this book for some useful information and eye candy in preparing an amazing underwater experience. I also recommend it because the photographs have been taken since the El Nino damage to the reefs so they portray a realistic view of what you will encounter. While the reef damage is unfortunate and visible, the Maldives are still an amazing for the variety of life that you can experience; whale sharks, mantas, hammerheads, napoleon fish, etc... can all be found in various location in the Maldives. Once, in the Maldives though, I would rely on the advice of the locals and the local dive shops. These people know which sites are best under the current conditions and where the sorts of things you would like to experience are to be found at that moment. So the book is not really a necessity, more something to wet your appetite for the trip. My experience included diving with a whale shark, being surrounded by giant mantas that swam in circles around me, seeing many sharks, and a very friendly sea turtle that seemed to think my camera might be an edible treat!

It's not what you think it is.......2007-06-27
I bought this guide to help me with my trip to Maldives But it's not good. The informations are not well organized and it's not easy to find what you are looking for. So, for me, it didn't work. The best guides are Eyewitness!!
Decent intro book.......2007-01-03
This book was OK. It was a little confusing and I thought not too well organized. I had to go to the web to find more information. Prices of resorts aren't listed but if you go to the resort's web page you can find that information. Definitely worth it for an introduction to Maldives.

Book Description
"Hey listen guys. I need you to tell me something and I want you to be really really honest...." "Sounds serious," said Nesta. "It is. I want you to tell me, do you think I've put on weight?" Nesta, Lucy, and T J looked at each other. "No," said T J after a moment too long. "Not really. Well, we all did a little on the school trip. So no more than the rest of us."
Izzie has always been "curvy," but since Christmas she has gained eight pounds, and nothing seems to fit anymore. In an attempt to lose weight, Izzie tries everything: one diet after another, a punishing exercise program, and every bit of conflicting advice anyone can give her.
Her constant worrying about her weight causes her to lose her confidence, and she stops appreciating the things in her life that are special -- her supportive friends, the fact that she has been selected for a TV teen panel, and a cute boy at the TV studio who seems to like her just the way she is.
Customer Reviews:
Urgh!.......2007-04-21
I really had to force myself to finish this one (I usually love the Mates, Dates books). It was boring and after 3 chapters I got really tired of Izzie's whining about her weight. She only gained about 8 pounds and was freaking out. I had to force myself to finish this one. Not only was it boring it was too preachy as well. I felt like Hopkins was trying to warn us of the dangers of dieting in a very heavy handed way.
This book is NOT recommended!
One of the best ones in the series...cant put it down! :-*.......2006-05-31
I recommend this book (and series) to teenage girls because you can really relate to the characters. Many girls struggle with their weight, but if they read this book, they might feel better about themselves. Also, this book shows girls what is a healthy choice to lose weight, and what is an unhealthy waste of time. The four girls in this series have many everyday problems that girls, mainly in their teens can relate to... including boys, family, and school. Also, this series is great because so many surprises occur that keep the pages turning. This is a great book and a great series...so I recommend this teen read.
something every teen girl should read.......2006-05-30
As always Cathy Hopkins wrote a wonderful addition to the Mates, Dates series. In this one, after just getting back from there tour of Italy, Izzie battles a weight problem. She goes on many fad diets and programs. I think its really important for young girls to read this because it really tells how managing weight can be hard and what are some of the wrong ways of going about loosing it.
Great book!.......2006-04-16
This book was just as funny as the rest of the series. It was exciting, and surprising at the end. As usual, it made me laugh a lot, and it was very refreshing and unique from other book series in general. I love the was Cathy Hopkins writes about how typical teenagers grow up in England and how it's so similar and different at the same time.
Teens love it.......2006-02-22
I bought it for my 13 and 15-year old daughters, they just love the series and have read all of them
