Customer Reviews:
Interesting read, hoped for more photos........2006-06-23
I'd give the text a 4, but my real motivation for the book was because of Galen Rowell's involvement. Unfortunately there's only several photos in the book and seemed like his name was tacked on the cover merely to sell the book. Obviously he had passed by the time the book was written and was a major character in the story but I think if it was illustrated in the manner like Barbara Rowell's Flying South book then the book would have been a 4-5 star book. The photos were a bit lackluster as well, I'm sure with better editing this book could have been something special. I know Rowell probably had better photos from the trip than was presented here.
The idea behind the book was great as the motivation was to create a reserve to protect the Tibetan Chiru from hunters. I'd recommend the book.
Great account..........2005-09-12
The book is a terrific account of a very challenging trek across Tibet's Chang Tang, in search of the elusive Chiru's calving grounds. Ridgeway's writing is outstanding in the manner in which he gets the reader to feel an integral part of the expedition, and to experience the risks and the challenges involved in such an impossible trek.
In terms of raising awareness about the chiru's unfortunate plight, this book, and the story on NG are hugely effective (I have not seen the TV documentary on the same, so I cannot comment on that.
Photography - one of the main reasons I bought the book is because the photography is by the legendary Galen Rowell, who was part of the trek. Galen's photography in the book is good, but well below his high standards in his own books. Surprisingly, I didn't see a single photograph that really made me go "WOW!" like a lot of Galen's photographs.
All in all, an excellent book that is difficult to put down.
The Big Open.......2004-09-29
Ridgeway does it again with a thoughtful, engaging story of a trek across the high tundra of Tibet looking for the calving grounds of the Chiru, an antelope which is in danger of extinction from killing it for it's wool. With Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin, and the late Galen Rowell; one gets to know these characters as friends and I'm envious of the time they were able to spend crossing an amazing landscape seen by few westerners since 1903. The Chiru were the reason for the trek and hopefully this book will help in their protection.
Very interesting.......2004-07-05
This is another strong Ridgeway book. Although he doesn't have the wide range of material to draw from as in the Shadow of Kilimanjaro, this book is still fascinating. Anyone who reads this will be intrigued by the fate of the chiru, appalled that so many people could be convinced that their fur could be collected off bushes and rocks (including major magazine publications), and interested in the dynamics of four determined personalities working together to cross the Chang Tang. Highly recommended.

A hit with our local elementary kids!.......2007-04-15
One of my jobs at our local library is to read stories to young children, sometimes also at elementary schools. I recently read this story to the 1st,2nd, 3rd and 4th graders and it received rave reviews. One teacher had each of her students draw a picture of his or her favorite story, and 25 of the 30 drawings were of Anna , the amazingly brave little sled dog. The illustrations were beautiful and large enough for groups of children to see them , while the text had a good amount of drama that held their interest.
Beautiful story, fantastic illustrations, strong positive message!.......2005-10-03
Big Enough Anna is a winner all around. The message is encouraging without being patronizing or syrupy; the illustrations will draw in even children who might think dogs are a little bit scary; and the story itself is full of a sense of daring and adventure and, most of all, the love between the musher/storyteller and her team of sled dogs. A great classroom unit could be built around this book, using the adult/teen version of the same story (Alone Across the Arctic) for additional background info or activity inspiration. (Both books could be read by a teacher in a weekend.) You will fall in love with Anna and all the dogs, and be cheering for them throughout all 3,000 miles of their expedition!
Great book!.......2003-12-12
I really like this book! It's a kid-friendly story with great pictures and message. Pam Flowers tells the true story of how the smallest dog in her dog-sled team saved the life of her biggest, strongest one...and also made possible the successful finish of her expedition across the American and Canadian Arctic. And she subtly sends the message that each of us can mazimize our strengths and lead useful, productive lives, even if others think we have too many weaknesses. We may even become heroes!
Anna's small; and small dogs aren't usually what mushers want in their teams. But Pam sees Anna has a big spirit and is curious, intelligent, willing to learn and a hard worker. So even though Anna's young, Pam puts her where her exceptionally-good leader, Douggie, can teach Anna the ropes of that critical position. Then things happen; and physically-small Anna is "big enough" to do what needs to be done. She saves not only Douggie but also the expedition.
I'd read "Alone Across the Arctic" (also by Pam Flowers with Ann Dixon,) and admired Pam's own fortitude, intelligence and perseverance. I wanted to know more about the adventure. Here's a gold nugget of a book that does that. And it's well written; both youngsters, and the adults who may share it with them, will read it all the way through...several times.
The great illustrations (paintings) by Bill Farnsworth perfectly capture the story and the attention of young children. I love looking at them each time, too.
This is a great Christmas present. If you've finished your shopping, surprise everyone for Valentine's Day.
Exquisite, no matter what your age.......2003-11-01
This exquisitely illustrated book is based on the true story of a litle sled dog who rose to the occasion and became a hero in her own right. Anna, a small Alaskan Husky female, was judged too small to be of any use when Pam Flowers made her historic journey across the Arctic with a team of sled dogs(chronicled in ALONE ACROSS THE ARCTIC). But when Pam's wise old leader dog disappeared, Pam put little Anna in the front because in spite of her size she was such a hard worker. Douggie, the wise old leader dog, was eventually found, but was so exhausted that little Anna had to take over and take charge of the trip. This lovely book not only teaches an important lesson--- that what matters is how much heart and spirit you have, not how big you are--- it is so beautifully done that I'm giving it to all my adult dog loving friends for Christmas.

Book Description
So I was sitting with Ned in a lecture, and then bam, Ned's in a three-piece suit, and I'm in a city hall meeting on how to get through the beginning of the Great Depression.
As in the Depression, in the 1930s.
What's more, there's a thief to track down. Someone's robbing local banks of what little money they have. Everyone's panicked about their money, so the thief could be just about anyone. But after spending just a little time in this odd place, I have a hunch there's more to it...

Interesting Premise but needed more work.......2007-02-28
Not as good as some of the other Carolyn Keene books, but a nice read. Gives some great background on the Depression. Too much emphasis on Nancy's lack of remembering where (or should I say when) she is though and not enough on the mystery at hand until shortly before the end.
Fabulous.......2006-04-14
This book i thought was not going to be that good, but was i wrong. Nancy falls asleep during a lecture. When she wakes up she is suddenly in the Great Deppresion. I think that spending the money is totally worth it. I won't spoil the fun but, once the mystery is over, there will be a unsolved mystery that you'll never forget!

On December 16, 1773, some 150 men boarded three ships docked at Griffin's Wharf. Dressed as Mohawks, their faces darkened with soot, the men cracked open chests of tea and threw them into Boston Harbor. What began as a protest against the duty on tea became an icon of the American Revolution. But what did the Boston Tea Party mean to its participants? Indeed, what did the Revolution mean to the ordinary person? In The Shoemaker and the Tea Party, Alfred F. Young tells the story of George Robert Twelves Hewes, who was involved in several events in Boston during the Revolution. In 1835, when Hewes was in his 90s, he was celebrated as one of the last survivors of the Tea Party.
The Shoemaker and the Tea Party comprises two linked essays. The first is about Hewes (whom Young describes as "a nobody who briefly became a somebody in the Revolution and, for a moment near the end of his life, a hero"), his memories, and what these memories reveal about the meaning of the Revolution for him. "For a moment he was on a level with his betters. So he thought at the time, and so it grew in his memory as it disappeared in his life." The second essay follows the lead of Michael Kammen and Eric Hobsbawm by looking at the dichotomies of public vs. private and popular vs. official memory, and the external forces that shape these memories into "tradition." Young does an excellent job of illustrating his theory with experiences from Hewes's life, newspaper accounts, and contemporary prints. This book will interest both scholars and general readers, though Young does presume some prior knowledge of the Revolution on the part of the reader. A thought-provoking look at the nature of memory, history, and tradition. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
George Robert Twelves Hewes, a Boston shoemaker who participated in such key events of the American Revolution as the Boston Massacre and teh Tea Party, might have been lost to history if not for his longevity and the historical mood of the 1830's. When the Tea Party became a leading symbol of the Revolutionary ear fifty years after the actual event, this 'common man' in his nineties was 'discovered' and celebrated in Boston as a national hero. Young pieces together this extraordinary tale, adding new insights about the role that individual and collective memory play in shaping our understanding of history.
Customer Reviews:
Shoemaker meets Forrest Gump.......2002-03-26
Young creates two essays; one that recalls George Robert Twelves Hewes participation in nearly every important event of the Am. Revolution, a sort of Forrest Gump of his time, and one that delves into the existance of historical memory- the true service of this book.
Young relates the events of Hewes life through contemporary biographers who had on hand the last of the revolutionary warriors. Contemporaries, intent on justifying and embellishing the memory of the revolutionary fathers, left a clear track of what the people of 19th century America wanted to know and to believe about their forebearers. It matters little that it would have been extremely unlikely that Hewes was present at every event he recalled.
That is Young's point. Sometimes, the story tells us as much about the historian and the market for his writing as it does about the event being recorded. Historical interpretation is recollection of events and placing them in context. Even immediately after an event, the eyewitness accounts vary. Today's historian may fall prey to superimposing current attitudes and values on prior events as those these are determinants.
Young's Shoemaker is a valuable caution to interpreters of history.
Just another Shoemaker.......2001-04-27
Alfred Young's book is a well-written example of how ordinary people shaped the Revolution. History tends to limit itself to the "Great Men" of the time, but sometimes an ordinary person like George Robert Twelves Hewes finds himself recorded into history. In this case, Hewes just happened to outlive many of the others who fought in the Revolution, and his experiences managed to live on in two biographies written about him while he was still alive. But Hewes is only part of the story. The rest of the book details how certain events of the Revolution have been forgotten (or at least not celebrated) such as the tar-and-feathering of John Malcolm. Young's book is striking and poignant, and it is written in a curt manner. I would suggest this book to anybody who has an interest in the American Revolution.
"I doff my hat to no man on the streets of Boston".......2000-12-24
How did the idea of a revolution take hold among those who cared little about a tax on tea? The story of an apprentice shoemaker, (the lowest of the trades, we learn) who, one year humbles himself at the house of a successful Bostonian businessman, and, the next year refuses to doff his hat to a British ship's captain on the street. What changed him? Divided into two parts, the first half of this book is excellent, the second half less so. More academic than a pop history, but still a good read, I'm glad I bought it. The kind of book that leaves you feeling you learned something and read a good book at the same time.
Good book, but edit it please.......2000-07-23
This book is worthwhile. Although it is an interesting examination of a regular person's involvment in large historical events, it is repetitive and needs to be edited. The book seems to have been written to drum into a reader's head the writer's opinions, rather than share his great discoveries. He uses the word "conservative" so many times that it becomes meaningless. Hopefully, the writer can free himself of these habits to write an even better book.
This book is a gem.......2000-05-15
As I get older, I get less & less likely to read those American History "survey" books than ever, and to find my solace in "little books" about real events that the historians use as a lever to explain, to explain intensely, a slice of the past. The Shoemaker & the Tea Party is just such a volume of interpretive history. The book consists of two historical essays, the first of which dredges everything we could possibly find out about the Shoemaker & his involvement in historical events ... the second which evaluates how the Tea Party has been viewed through history as different "powers" have had their hands on the rudder of historical interpretation. This book, like others about the early Republic, shows how our revolution was a profoundly conservative event, not an event that challenged the social structure of the colonies (except insofar as assets from the Tory elite were confiscated by the revolutionary elite). Although the revolution was made by both the elite & the workingman (tradesman & farmers), it was naturally the elite who chose to view & to institutionalize that view, historical events through their own eyes. The importance of social stability was paramount, hence the mob'ist origins of the revolution were downplayed or ignored. By the time this fellow, the Shoemaker, reemerged in the 1830s, the course of our American History writing about this topic was set in stone. The revolution was not a chaotic, angry event, but a smooth, patriotic one. This is a short book, alittle pricey for its length, but well worth reading.

I love it!.......2004-04-10
It was a really good book. I could read it 10000000 times and still not predict the next page. It was so much fun to read, and it shows that human nature hasn't changed at all since then. I'm a big fan of the show and I loved reading and watching it!
Justice For All.......2004-03-28
This book is one of the greatest! (Along with the second one in the series) If you've ever seen the PBSkids show, (I watch it every day!), you'll love these books! They help you understand the shows a lot better.
In this book, it contains the first three episodes of the series.
Ok, heres the summary part. Its kinda weird, because on the site they say James is 14 and Sarah is 15, on here they say they are BOTH 15. Oh well, I prefer them both being 15.Ok, here it goes:
15 year old Sarah Phillips is a green-eyed redheaded tall pretty daughter of a Major for the King. Meaning she is loyal to the crown. But her father left England to scout new lands in the Ohio Territorys. (...).
Intolerable Acts-In this episode, the four are staying at Phillis Wheatleys home, hiding from the British redcoats. But the Quartering Act is passed, and soldiers are staying at Ms. Wheatleys home! Sarah is confused at how Phillis is somebodys property, its an outrage! James and Henri find a way to get the word out that the Intolerable Acts were passed, but not without putting them all in grave danger. A danger that only SARAH could free them from, but she has to choose. Lie to a commanding officer in the King's Navy and save her friends, or rat them out and have them all sent to jail? (...)
The third episode thingy, I forgot the title-Sarah and Henri head for Boston to deliver supplies and meet up with Abigail Adams. James stays in Philadelphia to report on the continental congress thingy. But to him, theres an EVEN BIGGER story going on! After the three witnessed a merchant sailor get tarred and feathered after doing nothing wrong, James thinks of it as a patriotic and humorous act, one that he wants to report on. Will he learn his lesson? And will Sarah and Henri get the supplies to their destination safely?
Fun way to learn!.......2004-01-30
Wow! A book that is fun for kids to read and educational. My 10 year old son really liked this book. It has sparked his interest in the history of our country. I will definately be buying more in this series.
My 5yr son is LOVING this book..........2003-11-14
This is a great read-aloud chapter book for those kids ready to hear more than they can read. The text flows smooothly so reading it aloud is easy. No he said, she said text commonly found in easier chapter books.
My son loves the series on TV but we don't always get to see it and a lot of the story line is missed so this is helping to fill in the gaps. And while I agree, it is 21st century characters, it still does bring history to life especially for the younger grades. I think the grade level of 5-8 is high. I think that age group would be bored with this. Although the writing is at that level which is making it enjoyable for me to read.
I highly recommend it as a read aloud with grades K-3. It is a great introduction to the American Revolution filled with enough action and suspense to keep my 5yr asking for one more chapter please???
Customer Reviews:
Great Chronology of the Revolution.......2005-10-29
Mr. Labaree's Boston Tea Party is an excellent chronology of the American Revolution from the Townshend Acts to the Boston Tea Party, culminating in the Coercive Acts and the beginnings of the Continental Congress. Labaree lays out the increasing tension between the American Colonies and Britian. He delves into the radical nature of the Revolution as a libertarian mass movement. Although the colonists were led by leaders like Samuel Adams, Dr. Thomas Young, and Joseph Warren, Labaree cogently lays out how the Revolution was a mass movement of the people. Hundreds, if not thousands of farmers became involved in assisting Boston after the passage of the Coercive Acts. Philadephia organized a mass meeting of over 8000 people to protest the tyrannical acts. After the passage of the Coercive Acts, Boston, Philadelphia, New Haven, Baltimore, Annapolis and other colonial cities were inflamed. This beginning of revolution was not a movement of only the rich, but of an enraged, passionate people defending their liberties.
Most importantly Labaree shows how the British and Americans viewed imperial relations and the position of the colonies in the Empire. Overall a really fine read for those interested in our libertarian revolution.
The best account.......2002-06-20
This book has aged remarkably well. First published in 1964, it remains the best account of the Boston Tea Party in or out of print. In fact, it's something of a classic. It's easy to read, tells the story in all its complexity (which involves going beyond Boston to look at how opposition to the Tea Act played out in Charleston, Philadelphia, and New York), and places the "tea party" in the larger story of the American Revolution.

Frankly boring........2003-02-18
This was a disappointing book. History is so much more interesting than this! It was one of the driest, most boring accounts of this event that I have ever read. It is more boring than a textbook (this is the worst criticism...)The only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2 is that it does give the facts of the event. If you are looking for a book to interest a child in the Revolutionary War, keep looking.

Letter from Benjamin Hatcher.......2004-11-27
Benjamin Hatcher of Boston writes a long letter describing his participation in the Boston Tea Party, to William Yancy of South Carolina, June 18, 1774. Everything seems authentic, with nice illustrations.
In fine detail, the story of the Boston Tea Party is a bit different than what we know today as the legend, but the essentials are the same: the colonists boarded three British ships and threw the crates of tea overboard, due to a tax on tea which they objected to.
Benjamin Hatcher is a seller of tea and makes it clear why he opposes the tax: people can't afford it. There's a black market in tea imported from other sources, while the Tea Party is going on.
Interesting and well written.
Diximus.

The definitive guide to Boston's 2nd oldest Burying Ground.......2001-12-23
Copp's Hill Burying Ground is the second oldest cemetery in Boston, named for cobbler William Copp, who once owned the land: his children are buried at the hill's crest. Originally called the North Burying Ground, a British battery was stationed here during the occupation of Boston and was used to shell Charlestown during the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. All of this history is covered by Charles Chauncey Wells in this excellent guide, which also details the famous people buried here (such as Increase and Cotton Mather) as well as the early New England folk art carved into the tombstones. The current tombstone inventory lists those who served in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. This book includes a packet of maps of the burying ground, making it extremely user friendly for visitors to this historic site on the Boston Freedom Trail. There are obviously more famous patriots buried at the Granary Burying Ground (John Hancock, Samuel Adams, the Boston Massacre victims, etc.), but this guide will allow you to make the most of your visit to Copp's Hill.
