"When Willa turned and kissed her, Louie thought in her head, this is my first kiss. It wasn't, of course, she'd kissed a number of boys, and done more too, but she'd never, ever felt as if she were falling off a cliff."
Dare Truth or Promise, a turbulent love story by New Zealander Paula Boock, recalls Nancy Garden's Annie on My Mind and Good Moon Rising in its portrayal of two young women caught up in sexual passion for each other. Louie is the talented daughter of wealthy and cultured parents, and Willa is a strong-minded redhead who lives over the pub. They come from different worlds, but when they meet working at Burger Giant, lightning strikes--soon they are frantically in love. Willa has had a previous affair that was undermined by denial, but this time it feels inevitable and right, even when Louie's mother banishes Willa after discovering them in an embrace; even when Willa is threatened by hostile anonymous notes; even when they avoid each other in confusion and pain. Thanks to the acceptance of her tough bartender mother, Willa gains the strength to wait it out, but a psychologist tells Louie that her feelings are a passing phase, a fundamentalist promises her sins will land her in hell, and her best friend is supportive but embarrassed. The healing words that finally enable Louie to believe in herself and return to the relationship come at last from a young priest: "You see, I think love comes from God. And so, to turn away from love, real love, it could be argued, is to turn away from God." (Ages 16 and older) --Patty Campbell

    Book Description

When Louie and Willa first meet, they don't know their lives will soon be changed forever. Self-assured Louie is gearing up for another successful year in high school, starring in a production of Twelfth Night and running the Comedy Club. Kicked out of her last school and still stinging from a past relationship, Willa wants only to get through her final year at school quietly so she can graduate and become a chef. More than anything, she wants to be left alone. But each girl unexpectedly finds that plans mean nothing when it comes to love. Louie discovers that everything she was sure of-acceptance, faith, and identity-are not what they had seemed. And Willa finds herself suddenly willing to take another chance.

5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE and BRILLIANT.......2007-07-28

THE best EVER lesbian/questioning book I have read so far. You fall in love with the characters instantly and it is easy to find yourself lost in the beautiful love story of this book. I loved it so much and couldn't put it down, that I read it in one night. I first got it from the library near where I live and after reading it, I loved it so much that I simply HAD to buy it. Beautifully inspirational. You will never find a story quite as true and good as this one. Everything about it is absoltely BRILLIANT. A MUST READ for lesbian or questioning teens.

    1 out of 5 stars shameful.......2007-07-23

I wish I could give this even fewer stars. It is despicable that there are authors peddling books to our children that encourage not only premarital sexual behavior, but perverse behavior at that. Shame on Paula Boock.

Dare Truth Or Promise took be no mroe than 2 days to read...I couldnt put it down. It touched me on so many levels; through the two girls meeting to their falling in love to every other aspect of the book. It was beautifully written and had me either smilijng or in tears for most of it depending on the part. well worht the money and deffinatly worth the time to read.

    5 out of 5 stars A Definite Favorite! .......2007-06-14

Buy this book! I'll make this short, because a lot of good has been said about the book anyway. I loved this book so much that I stayed up till 5am reading it! I couldn't put it down. Paula Boock shows that she is an excellent story-teller and writer. Her story is believable and the characters almost become real people. I absolutely loved this book! It's definitely one of my favorites now!! Such a good story! Read it nowwww!!

    5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2007-01-31

When I read the 'first kiss' quote on the main page for this book I knew I had to have it. Every single part of this book is perfect and so familiar. So much of it is exactly how things are with me and my girlfriend. The quote "it loved to happen" that is used throughout is so meaningful if you really stop and think about it. This book really pulls on your heart strings and the few ending parts had me crying so much I couldn't even read the last pages!! Only thing I'd complain about is that I didn't want it to end, I wish it was longer!

I have never heard of this book but I read the Princess of Pop by Cathy Hopkins and it was really good book. I am a very tough critic (so says my friend) and this series is great. I want to read the Mates Dates and Inflatable Bras and they sound really good. My friend is in the middle of reading the first book of that seires and she likes it a lot so far. If you are looking for an intresting girly teen book then this is the one. Cathy Hopkins books are some of my favorite books. I really have no idea what I am typing but it is a good book. (...)

5 out of 5 stars really good series!!.......2005-06-14

This is the fifth Mates, Dates book where Lucy had just decided to get back together with Tony, and he told her they should see other people. She feels left out because all of her other friends have boyfriends. Then she meets a boy named Daniel and he seems perfect; he's into fashion, like Lucy, he is honest, good looking and everything she could want in a boy. But then he starts telling her she should only do things with him and not her friends and he leads her everywhere and she has no say in what they do. Read the book to find out what Lucy decides to do!!!

      5 out of 5 stars I Love Lucy.......2004-08-25

I love this whole series! This particular book was great because we caught up with Lucy, who is one of my favorite characters. So these books aren't life-changing or anything, but they're just fun to read. If you want a light read, buy this book. Teenage girls can really relate to Lucy and her friends. Have some fun and read all the books in the Mates, Dates Series!

      5 out of 5 stars ----.......2004-07-14

5 out of 5 stars Mates Dates, ans SOle Surivivors.......2004-06-18

The book Mates Dates, and Sole Survivors by Cathy Hopkins, is about a girl named Lucy and her friends. Lucy feels left out of everything, everywhere she goes she sees people with boyfriends. That's all she wants, to fit in and she thinks if she gets a boyfriend like everyone she will fit in. She goes on what is suppose to be a relaxing weekend with her friend. There she meets someone she thinks is to good to be true!! Once she gets home and spends time with him, she feels smothered. He's running her life and she is loosing her friends. Then she thinks back and maybe she liked it better being single. The book takes place in London and the author is from London and the words she used were very interesting and different. Cathy Hopkins has a series of other books and hopes to make many more! I think this book is a great book for the ages ten to thirteen.

      5 out of 5 stars A Fulfilling Read!!!.......2004-04-12

Cathy Hopkins has still not disappointed me in the first five "Mates, Dates, and..." books in her teen series, and I doubt she will be doing so very soon, or possibly even ever. Her writing is very fresh, clear, real, fast-paced, and wonderful. With each book being better than the last, any reader's expectations will be blown away as they discover that this author holds each character true to their original ways, while still altering them with time and the fact that they learn from their experiences. This series is hardly seen as "corny", as it is funny and seems as if it were written very extraordinarily by a mature teenager who has experienced a large number of things. Cathy manages to crawl into the minds of four very different, very close friends with their own uniquely recognizable personalities; and each book is told in the perspective of one of them. These books can be serious in certain moments, but not to the extent of extreme sentimentality. At times I even am led to believe that she might have experienced most of the situations that her characters fall into.

Cathy Hopkin's "Mates, Dates, and..." series is entirely an amazing, fulfilling read for various age groups, particularly females in their teen years.

I read this book in one night... from 1 to 3 in the morning... not one of those books you just CAN'T put down, more like one of those that just flows so smoothly there doesn't seem like a place you can end it till you read till the end...

The Lia character was too perfect, and the Kaylie character was too mean. Everybody has a good side and bad traits... Lia almost seemed like a "Mary Sue".

Plus it really didn't teach much of a lesson, didn't hold a deeper meaning, a bit typical, and just one of those books I'll read to the end simply because I can't find a place to stop, but afterwards, I feel nothing and will probably forget about it.

I suppose it flowed nice but the story just wasn't deep enough like Christopher Pike's books or Anne Rice's.

3 out of 5 stars The Mean Girl.......2005-08-01

*TQAHB is quite a realistic story about a pretty and sweet girl (Lia) who is bullied for no good reason by the school Bitch.
Via rumours, smirks and giggles, threats and general bitchiness.
Lia is a sensitive, peaceful and down-to-Earth girl who is cut to the quick by the nastiness and she tries to get through to the mean girl. But no matter how nice she is or how forgiving she tries to be or what she does, nothing changes. Lia comes to a point where she must be strong or else sink into some leval of depression.

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable story tackling serious issues.......2004-12-11

The third installment in Cathy Hopkins's Truth or Dare series features Lia, daughter of a famous '80s rocker. Lia recently started going to school near her home after years of boarding in London. She loves her friends --- Cat, Becca, Squidge and Mac --- and just wants to fit in.

Popular "teen queen" Kaylie mentions that she likes Jonno, who in turn asks Lia out. Now Kaylie has it in for Lia, and starts a subtle bullying campaign that has Lia in knots every time she goes to school.

The pranks increase and get more serious, and Lia now thinks about returning to her school in London. But her new friends are not ready to give her up yet, and encourage her to stand up for herself. She tries to reason with Kaylie, but the girl is bent on humiliating Lia in any way she can. Lia also tries avoidance and shrinks within herself, attempting not to attract notice. The last thing Lia wants is a big confrontation, but soon she realizes that lots of other girls are bullied by Kaylie and her friends as well. It's time for it all to end.

Hopkins tackles the serious issue of girl bullying in the midst of an enjoyable story. This series remains strong.

American fans should realize that 'been' comes close to rhyming with 'Queen' in England, where the story is set.

Dear Squidge, I really like you but...I ripped the letter up. Pathetic. "How am I going to do this, Bec? Help me."

Becca's face clouded. "He's going to be devastated. He really adores you."

But now Cat's facing some major dilemmas. A game of truth or dare lands her in hot water when she's asked for a truth she can't reveal. On top of this, she doesn't want to hurt her boyfriend by telling him the truth, but she knows it's over between them.

Is it right to tell lies to protect people or keep the peace? Can the truth be too hurtful? Cat tries to sort all this out, and in doing so, discovers a lot about herself and others.

5 out of 5 stars this book is amazing!.......2006-06-26

this book can relate to any teenager. it is about fourteen year old Cat and her problems with her relationships. First of all, she is getting a bit tired of her boyfriend: Squige. she likes him, but she thinks of him more of a brother, rather than a boyfriend. Also, her best friend, Becca likes this hot guy named ollie. So what's the problem? well, Cat honestly likes the same guy. But she can't tell her best friend...so anyway, Becca begs Cat to go talk to him. Cat says yes, but she never meant it. The next day, Cat is sitting on the beach remensing about her dead mother who she misses very much when....Ollie sits down next to her! he starts to flirt with her and she flirts back. he buys her some icecream and it's getting late when she realizes she hadn't mentioned Becca. Right when she's about to, ollie kisses her. When she finally leaves the beach, Becca asks her to talk to him. When Cat gets quiet..becca knows something is wrong.
And that is the beginning of the best book ever!!! read the rest to find what happens next!!

4 out of 5 stars Another response to below.......2006-06-13

First of all, please do not write a review for a book if you can not spell. (Ps. They're, not there) Secondly, please support all the statements with facts without giving too much information. I am sorry everyone this was how to for writing a review.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-05-13

To respond to the reviewer who said these books aren't relatable - well he or she must never have been a teenage girl. Sure it a glamorized version of teenage girlhood but some of the same problems the characters had happen to real girls. Dating, breakups, parents dying ... a lot of girls can relate to that. This book is not supposed to be Anna Karenina but it is for pure entertainment value and I think the writer more than succeeds in entertaining the reader. At least I was entertained. I laughed a lot and felt sad sometimes but it was an adventure. I am 22 now and I love this book so I can imagine that any teenage girl would. Highly recommended!

P.S. I actually enjoyed this more than the 2 Mates, Dates books I've read.

2 out of 5 stars they dont relate.......2004-12-23

I have to say this series is horrible. there so stupid and they dont relate to real life. They bore me. i would rather read something more intersting like the gossip girl series or the hard cash triloigy.

5 out of 5 stars It just keeps getting better!.......2004-12-02

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so I enjoyed this one just as much if not more. In White Lies and Barefaced Truths, we see things from Kat Kennedy's point of view. Kat's mom died some time before, so she only lives with her dad. She has pretty many siblings and has to deal with them while dealing with herself and her friends. Kat learns to tell the difference between a time when you should tell the truth and when you might need to tweak the truth. I think a lot of girls will connect with this character, so check out this new series written by Cathy Hopkins.
