4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to Different Cruise Options.......2003-12-23

Before I purchase any cruise-related books, I prefer to verify the information I know to be true. While I have been on three different cruise lines and ships, my wife has been on many more. Based on our experiences, this book has accurate information about what to expect on the ships listed.

Nearly every ship in every cruise line has a summary or review in this book. For each ship the vital statistics (Passenger Count, year built etc) are provided. I've chosen a cruise based solely on that information before, and Berlitz's information is quite thourough. Berlitz then continues and assigns a numerical rating to each ship based on five or six factors which also has it's own numerical rating. Once again, my wife and I found nearly every rating to be in line with our experiences. Most importantly, the comparisons between ratings (for example comparing the NCL Sea with the Celebrity Horizon) seemed to be accurate in our opinion. Based on this information, we have purchased this book to plan our next voyage.

My chief complaint about this book is that there are times when the written parts - that is to say the opinions expressed - are a bit superficial and do not provide much insight. This varies widely from review to review with some ships having a wealth of information and others having little to offer.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who is a die-hard cruise planner who wishes to have all of the information prior to booking. It should not be your only resource, but it is a wonderful place to begin.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Planning A Cruise.......2003-10-23

I am fond of this book for giving detailed information on most major cruise ships currently afloat. There is virtually nil on the actual itineraries, but there is an abundance of insight into the technical details of the ships themselves, and more importantly excellent analysis of a ship's ambiance, which is critical for making a good decision on whether to cruise on a specific ship or not (e.g., the differences between a Celebrity ship and a Carnival ship).

Before I consider a cruise on a specific ship, I open this wonderful book up and read the entry for that ship, and have never been disappointed with the informative analysis and technical information. I just finished a Bermuda cruise on the Celebrity 'Horizon,' and found the book to be right on target, and the cruise to be perfect.

One minor nitpick, that does not really detract from the overall value of the book (but would be nice in future editions) is the general absence of information on the ships that specialize in coastal cruising in Norway (Norwegian Coastal Voyage). I know that is a fairly specialized area, but there are many other specialized ships in here.

If you are interested in itinerary details, this book is of limited use, but if you use it in the planning stage, you will greatly increase your chances of a great cruise suitable for you.

5 out of 5 stars Berlitz Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships 2003.......2003-05-29

I now own the 1995, 2000 and 2003 editions of this guide, and this new edition is, as it claims to be, indeed a < > guide to the world of cruising. My previous review of the book seems to have been helpful to 123 readers, so I feel encouraged to rewrite and update my views on this new edition.
There are many cruise ship guides on the market, but none as complete and thorough as this one which gives very detailed reviews of no fewer than 254 cruise ships, ranging from the modest < > to the, some would say, immodest < >. Certainly there is a very important first section dealing with many aspects of the cruising experience, but thankfully not the huge amount of space that many cruise book writers feel they must devote to descriptions of ports and cruise destinations. There are many other travel books that can give you that information. The major part of the book [around 75%] is devoted to the very detailed descriptions, reviews and ratings of the individual cruise ships, each review giving a general description, accomodation, dining, entertainment, and, very importantly, < >. You may not agree with all of Douglas Ward's comments, but he is generally very fair in his criticisms.
Some reviewers feel that Mr. Ward is too < > in his viewpoint, but my own view is that although Carnival, Princess or Royal Caribbean are excellent introductions to cruising for first-timers, each with their own particular strengths, however it's sad to see so many cruisers who won't venture past their < >, and this is where Mr. Ward's expertise comes in. Most cruisers won't have the means, nor perhaps the desire, to travel on his top rated ship < >, but his description of life aboard such a superb ship makes a mouth-watering read.
One reviewer took Mr. Ward to task for a perceived < > stance, however I can detect no such bias. Rather, his approach is truly international, unlike most cruise ship writers who look at the cruising scene only from the american perspective. The most interesting cruises are those which have a truly international clietele. If the ship were full of only Los Angeleans, or Londoners, or Sydneysiders, it would be a very dull cruise indeed.
The inclusion of colour photos and maps in this new edition makes a welcome innovation, as are the descriptions of ships, like the Queen Mary 2, that are yet to be launched. Some may argue that the cruise enthusiast can find all he or she needs to know on the internet, however I would counter that few writers could compete with Ward on completeness or detail in their reviews. The blurb on the back cover claims < > and I woud have to concur with this judgement. It's a great read, both for the experienced cruiser, and the novice - and I defy any non-cruiser who delves into it to resist after sampling Ward's enthusiastic tome. Good reading - & Good cruising!

3 out of 5 stars A good reference book, but...........2003-04-07

The book provides detailed information on vritually every cruise ship alfoat. A good portion of this is useful, too, like the eletrical current in the cabin, or if the ship has a movie theatre. However, the ship reviews do need some work. They come across as hypercritical, and seem to be written based on traditional British cultural expectations. They do provide a breakdown of how they arrived at their scores, but this causes some problems. They compare luxury ships such as the QE2 with mainstream ships like the Fantasy. This is innapropiate because people have different expecations from a luxury ship as compared to a mainstream liner. There are some minor innacuracies, too. The main dining rooms on the Paradise are the Destiny and Elation, not the Destiny and Paradise as the book states (I sailed on that ship twice). Also, the book implies that the Carnival Destiny uses a new facility at the Port of Miami. However, the Destiny has been based out of San Juan, PR since at least 2001 (I have all the brochures).

In summary, if you can overlook the minor errors, this book makes a good, concise reference book.

3 out of 5 stars Ship by Ship Summary Analysis.......2003-03-14

This book can only be described as a very excellent summary level reference guide for the over 260 ships covered. If you need to have more indepth review, please look elsewhere (unofficial cruise guide would be an excellent choice). However, if you don't mind shelling out the cash to purchase this book, it's an excellent reference material (similiar to a view from 5,000 ft above).

I'm happy with this reference book, but I also have plenty of "duplicative" books (Unofficial cruise guide, Frommer's caribbean cruises and ports of call, Alaska by cruiseships, Passporter Disney cruise lines, and various other titles).

Book Description

When Ellie and her friends go camping, they have no idea they're leaving their old lives behind forever. Despite a less-than-tragic food shortage and a secret crush or two, everything goes as planned. But a week later, they return home to find their houses empty and their pets starving. Something has gone wrong--horribly wrong. Before long, they realize the country has been invaded, and the entire town has been captured--including their families and all their friends. Ellie and the other survivors face an impossible decision: They can flee for the mountains or surrender. Or they can fight.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.......2007-09-30

I think of myself as someone who reads quite a lot, and, having just finished this book, it sits comfortably at the top of my list of books that I like, along with Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card.

This book has a real quality, something that other books don't manage to duplicate. When, shortly after the characters return to their homes and discover what has happened, one of them says, "I'll never feel safe again", it felt real, and I felt the same way, although the likelihood of another country invading the United States seems small.

Other reviewers have said the characters are unrealistic or one-dimensional. I disagree completely. The characters are perfectly reasonable from the first, and as time progresses they discover the desperate brilliance and strength that shows up repeatedly during war. They develop as emotional human beings over the course of the story, discovering things about themselves and about the way the world works.

The book covers a lot of ground, and although there are some stretches of emptiness, they are entirely within reason--modern war is mostly waiting interspersed with brief periods of frenzied activity. John Marsden does an excellent job of conveying this.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to read the second book.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-03-10

I thought this was going to be boring and stupid, seeing how the premise of the book is Australia suffering a military invasion. I don't believe your government would be that short sighted.

Turned out its a good read. I like the ordinary people faced with extraordinary situations aspect, and how they react. I'm halfway through the second book, plan on reading them all. I really hope at some point they say who the invaders are. At first its kind of confusing trying to keep all the players separate, but the author whittles them down, and gives them all distinct traits. I still want to know why Ellie had to turn the phone to talk? Whats up with that? :)

In case any Aussies are wondering, and I know its for local consumption. And its just a plot device, but our memory extends further back than Viet Nam, within 72 hours of any invasion, their would be so much US firepower floating off your shores, it would make D-Day look like a Sunday Sail. For better or worse, like it or not, your on our "short list" of people not to be screwed with.

3 out of 5 stars Australia Under Attack.......2007-02-15

One Australian summer, Ellie and her friends decide to go far down into a valley that seems never to have been explored before, to have a camping trip and get back to nature. The group of teens spend a week camping in the valley getting to know each other better and wishing they could stay longer.

When the teens make their way home, they find something is terribly wrong. Ellie's dogs are dead. Her mother and father are nowhere to be found. There is no power at her house, and no phone lines. The group travels to the houses of others who live out in the sparsely populated areas and find the same things. In one house is a message on the fax machine from the father of one of the girls, saying that they were told to expect routine Army maneuvers but he is suspicious. Soon Ellie and her friends find out that their town is under seige. They have been attacked by another country and most everyone in town is being held prisoner at the stadium.

It is now up to Ellie and her friends to figure out how to save everyone. They are safe and free for the moment, but how can they remain so with soldiers patrolling the streets and shooting at them?

There is some good character development in this book. Some of the characters have changed in reaction to their dangerous situation, which is realistic. This book drags on a bit, though. It's long, but it is also part of a series so by the end of the story nothing is resolved yet, leaving room for sequels. It didn't grab my interest enough to make me need to read the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Tomorrow, When the War Began.......2006-05-16

Ellie and six of her friends decide to take a camping trip together in the bush of Australia. They have a great time while they are gone from the responsibilities of their families. On the day of their return, things are seriously wrong. Every one is gone; their country has been invaded. Important decisions are made as lives are taken and plans are made. And in the midst of all this chaos, love is born.

This book kept me "on my toes" throughout the entire plot. The action was well planned out. The characters were intelligently created. I seriously recommend anyone in the "young adult" catagory to give this book a shot. The plot was amazing and the action packed events were the cherry on top of it all. Beware, the book will keep you anticipating what will happen next. John Marsden has created a very intense book that is highly entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars Can't understand the Hype.......2006-04-14

I listened to the unabridged audio edition of this novel after reading the rave reviews on Amazon.Com and Audible. But quite frankly, I don't understand the hype. Perhaps because I'm not an Australian, nor am I a teenager but the world of Ellie just seemed unreal to me. Marsden's writing style (first person), was annoying, and Ellie seemed written like a boy rather than a teenage girl. I know few teenage girls who would think to turn a lawnmower into a bomb, and yet Ellie does.

Second WAY too many characters. There are like six or seven similar teenagers who could easily have been combined into one or two decent characters. It was also pretty difficult to tell them apart because Marsden rarely describes them.

Speaking as an adult American, I seriously doubt the US would let any foreign country 'invade' Australia, or that the Australian government could become so lax... I really had to suspend disbelief during the scenes where politics were discussed.

Overall, I liked the premise of this book- but the world of Ellie, the Australian slang, and the slew of clonish characters made this novel a chore to listen to. 2 stars.

Ellie has started to believe she won't survive the war. Their band of eight teenage guerrillas is down to five now--Robyn and Corrie and Chris are dead, and only she and Homer and Kevin and Lee and Fi are still trying to sabotage the enemy who has taken over their country. They're growing numb and soul sick from the violence, because they've been fighting for a long time--through four previous novels, actually: John Marsden's Tomorrow: When the War Began, The Dead of Night, A Killing Frost, and Darkness Be My Friend. At the same time, they are normal teens who kid around, fall in and out of love, and think long thoughts about the meaning of life.

It is this poignant human dimension that lifts Marsden's series above the run-of-the-mill spy action novel--that and the fact that nobody is better at writing about things blowing up. And his scenes leading up to the explosion create tension so powerful it is almost unbearable to keep on reading--but impossible not to. In Burning for Revenge, the five have been abandoned in enemy territory when the New Zealand general decides that they are not valuable enough to send a rescue helicopter. Without any definite plans, they sneak into the back of a truck, only to find themselves at the end of the ride deep within the enemy's airfield. How they battle out of the situation and leave the enemy's air power in ruins makes a breathlessly exciting story that will not disappoint the many teen fans of this excellent series. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

      Book Description

From Hell to Stratton isn't an easy trip, especially when the enemy's headquarters lies somewhere in between. And that's exactly where Ellie and her friends unwillingly find themselves — smack in the middle of the Wirrawee airfield. With only five of them against hundreds of armed soldiers, escape seems like a suicide mission. The odds aren't good, and Kevin's nervous
      breakdown isn't helping matters.
Ellie and her compatriots are back, battling to stay alive and struggling to stay together in John Marsden's latest book in the TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN series. High-speed truck chases, unexpected river journeys, and treachery by one of their own are just a few of the problems these Australian teens face in this gritty tale of war and survival.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent addition to an addictive series........2007-03-24

The Tomorrow series of books by John Marsden got me through High School (as a lucky New Zealander, I have had the books since the 1990's). I awaited every new instalment with excitement and trepidation. `Burning for Revenge' was no exception and it delivered everything I was hoping for and more. `Burning for Revenge' is a nice return to the action, gunfire and explosive situations after a more sober `Darkness Be My Friend'. One book from the Tomorrow series features a warning quote: "do not start at night". This is completely true in `Burning for Revenge' - the reader is urged on to continue reading until the last page is turned, and is left gasping for breath and reaching urgently for the next instalment.

If you have enjoyed the Tomorrow Series, be sure to catch the Ellie Chronicles ( While I Live (The Ellie Chronicles) )that continue the story of Elle after the peace settlement.

5 out of 5 stars Non Stop Action.......2005-11-01

Burning For Revenge will keep you up all night, that's for sure. There is a lot of non-stop action packed in this book, more than any of the previous books. Marsden makes you visualize the fear felt by the characters while escaping constant pursuit. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

The Dead of Night is a fascinating follow-up to Tomorrow, When the War Began. I teach a class of 7th and 8th graders and we have read both books aloud throughout the current year. The kids simply love this series. Marsden is no dummy! He knows how to cleverly pull in the teen readers. In this series, the adults have managed to screw things up and it is up to the kids to correct things. He offers a sense of adventure along with a sense of power to his teen readers. Furthermore, he deals directly, yet responsibly, with a number of issues that are especially important to teens. Somehow, he manages to capture the true feelings and concerns that are universal for most teens.

      Book Description

Hell's a big place, but it gets crowded when Ellie and her friends take an uncooperative crew of orphans under their wing and into their hidden refuge. It's not easy to keep four young children busy and happy in the bush, and things only get worse when Ellie and Homer find evidence that mysterious visitors have discovered their sanctuary. Could it be a patrol of enemy soldiers sent on a search and destroy mission? They find out all too soon.
In a time and place where war robs your identity, makes you forget your past and fear your future, it seems impossible for Ellie to make sense of a world that is quickly falling apart. And after a peaceful food raid turns into a nightmarish fight for survival, escape back to Hell seems hopeless.
Ellie, Fi, Homer, Lee, and Kevin brave the worst in this electrifying continuation of their battle to stay alive and sane in a war zone that was once their home.
The Night Is for Hunting is the sixth book in the Tomorrow When the War Began series.

The book The Night is for Hunting is a sequel and an excellent, well-written book

by John Marshen. It is about a group of teenagers who are caught up in a war. The group

comes upon a Circle of friends that are starving, dirty kids who mug them. When enemy

soldiers envied the bombed city, they head for there hideout, hell. The kids that journey

to hell only to find it have been overrun with enemy soldiers. After the solders are

supposedly gone, the kids disappear. With one of them dead and the rest with gashes and

broken bones, there is no hope for them. Whale the teenagers are gun fighting with

Themselves and the remaining, growing treat of the enemy soldiers. With another kid

dead, they decide to find there back to hell. When they get back, they find bodies

in addition, one teenager dead. Together the teenagers and the kids team up and fight off

the enemy. Only ending in disaster for them. With little ammunition and even less hope,

they attempt to rob a food truck for food, but only getting them arrested. Now they

decided they have to break out. Will they survive? After all life is like a car chase, fast

      and unpredictable.

I strongly recommend this book to those who thirsts for adventure. The Night is

For hunting is a truly awesome book.

      4 out of 5 stars Book 6 of 7 in Tomorrow Series.......2005-11-11

This may be the weakest volume in the Tomorrow series. It is still a non-stop page turner, but it didn't have the action you'd expect after reading the first 5 volumes. The story is mostly about dealing with a band of feral orphans of the war. They cause constant trouble and frustration for Ellie, and the others. This is the only book in the series that leaves a cliffhanger at the end to get you crying for the finale...which I will start to read as soon as I finish this review.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest war story/ comming of age tail ever told.......2002-06-30

I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book

4 out of 5 stars Very good, as always.......2002-04-20

The Tomorrow series may be the best seven books I've ever read. John Marsden is an excellent writer, and he almost make me think that this war is real.
But this book probably is the worst of the seven. It wasn't such a thrill reading it as the others, as this book's just made to build up the tension for the grand finale in "The Other Side of Dawn". The only thing that really happens is that they run a daycare center for some feral kids, and that they get aware of soldiers lurking outside Hell.
Luckily, Marsden can with his spell-binding writing still capture the reader in this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best read in the world.......2002-01-23

This is the story of the century. This is a definite must read. This is part of one of the most phenominal series of this century. This gripping story will have you guessing. The details will set a scene all its own. With a cliffhanger, it will leave you begging for the next book.

At last, the final episode of the gripping Tomorrow series by wildly popular Aussie author John Marsden has crossed the Pacific, and this concluding chapter in the lives of Ellie, Fi, Homer, Kevin, and Lee may be the most exciting one yet. Informed by Colonel Finley that the military is making a move that could be compared to the D-day attack of WWII, the outback teen guerillas know that the end of the bewildering war that changed their lives is drawing near. Armed with plastic explosives and grenades, courtesy of the New Zealand Army, they have been instructed to "spread chaos and confusion behind their (enemy) lines in every way, shape and form." For Ellie and company, this means targeting a hostile refueling station and train tracks. Of course, nothing is ever easy. There are still the feral kids to worry about and the dismal discovery that soldiers have infiltrated Hell, their only secured hiding place in the bush. As The Other Side of Dawn rockets at breakneck speed towards its stunning climax, only one thing is certain: there is no guarantee that any of them will make it through this last conflict alive.

Not a book for new recruits, The Other Side of Dawn will be most enjoyed by those hard-core fans who have been with Ellie and the gang from the beginning. Wirrawee buffs will be rewarded with classic Marsden: teeth-jarring action sequences interspersed with meaningful moments between friends who may not see the sunrise again together. This is a satisfying ending to a smashing good series. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

      Book Description

The Other Side of Dawn is the long-awaited, riveting, final title in the Tomorrow series about a group of teenagers in war-torn Australia. Since their home was invaded by enemy soldiers and transformed into a war zone, Ellie and her friends have been fighting for their lives. They have learned survival skills out of necessity and taken care of each other through impossibly dark times. Now, with a roar like a train in a tunnel, the war has entered its final days. There's no more sitting around, no more waiting. There's only fast decisions, fast action, fast thinking—and no room to get it wrong. As the enemy forces close in on their hideout in Hell, Ellie, Fi, Homer, Lee, and Kevin, and their adopted group of orphaned children, find themselves facing the last chapter of their struggle for freedom. But it may just be the most dangerous yet. And not everyone will survive.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect ending........2007-08-09

Of course, after six books following these teenagers from Australia, I was hoping for the picture-perfect ending. You know, the one where everything goes back to the way it was before the war and there's romance and happiness when they reunite and everything is amazing.

You won't get that. But it's a real ending. If Marsden wanted any shred of credibility at the end of this series, he had to end it the way he did. And because of this, it was the perfect ending. I have absolutely no complaints, except for maybe his choice of words in the last sentence.

I dunno. But if you're even a casual reader of this series, and ESPECIALLY if you're very much into it, you won't be disappointed by a long shot by the finale.

      5 out of 5 stars I really didn't want it to end.......2005-11-16

This is the finale of the Tomorrow series. I read "The Other Side of Dawn" slowly, savoring each word. I guess I didn't really want the story to end. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series reading it in order, a page turner throughout. The Other Side of Dawn is packed with the action we've come to expect in each book, but there is also a lot of reflection by Ellie about everything that's happened. I'll look forward to someday coming back to reread the series from the beginning.

5 out of 5 stars A well rounded book to finish an excellent series.......2005-07-24

A must for an teenager who is stuck for something to do during those long hot summer days where hard work seems an immpossiblity!
Note you really must start with the first book in the series to get a grasp of the plot and a feel for the writers style etc for all obvious reasons (to see if you like it).
Hope this helps with your desicion for the book ;)

      3 out of 5 stars Hmmm...........2005-06-09

I was expecting a bit more for the last book, I think it was written a tad perfunctorily near the end. I couldn't say this is my favourite in the series, I gave the others a big fat 5 stars, but this one bored me, to tell you the truth. I did think alot at the end though, when I had finished, I felt attached to Ellie and co. Sad, yes. This series though, awesome, just read them, read them all!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Effects of War........2005-05-02

War is something that effects and hurts many people. It causes young men and women to do and see things that they are not emotionally and physically prepared for.

Ellie and her friends went off to camp for the weekend in this place called Hell. While they were out in the bush, having a good time, they had no idea that while they were sleeping their country was being invaded. They had no idea that their lives had changed forever.

When Ellie and her friends returned home from their camping trip, they knew something was terribly wrong. They then had to learn to avoid enemy soldiers and scavenge for food to stay alive, so they went back into the bush where Hell became their new home. They have also planned dangerous attacks against the enemy to try to help get their country back. But Ellie or some of her friends have had to make the ultimate sacrifice... Their Life.

There are 7 books in this series, by John Marsden. In these books you will learn how war changes the life's of everyone that is involved in it, or even the people that are just around it. You will also learn how the kids that are involved in war, will have to grow up fast, and how they will learn how to survive on their own, without adults.

I strongly recommend this series of books for, both adults and young people. It will teach adults that young people can be independent, and that they can survive on their own. It will also teach young people, that being a kid is the best thing in the world, and that they need to enjoy their youth for as long as possible.
