Book Description

"It is very rare that you get this kind of expertise . . . with this level of communicative ability."- Daily Yomiuri

Asian Extreme cinema is hot, and this book lays it out in all its gory glory. Patrick Galloway, who last looked at samurai movies in his well-received Stray Dogs and Lone Wolves, now takes on Asian masters of suspense, exploitation, the supernatural, and bone-chilling, blood-curdling fear and evil. The films featured here are pan-Asian, including Korea and Thailand, and represent a mix of classics and the contemporary cutting edge. Included are viewing tips and overviews of genres and cultures.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read - Setting the Record Straight.......2007-05-19

As an aspiring writer who was extremely impressed by the author's tone and style, as well as a fan of many of the films reviewed in Asia Shock, I am rather bemused by comments made by Vegan Viking from San Francisco. She writes: "Galloway mentions how Western audiences might not find cannibalism in Hong Kong such a stretch to imagine ... he shrugs it off by rationalizing along the lines of 'the Chinese eat a lot of weird food anyways,' implying that because the Chinese occasionally enjoy snake soup, it's only logical that they would break the universally held taboo against eating human flesh. I found this magnificently ignorant." These comments are just plain wrong. The movie in question is Three Extremes, a fictionalized account of real-life events in mainland China, and nowhere in his review does he say "Western audiences might not find cannibalism in Hong Kong such a stretch to imagine." Rather, Galloway discusses Chinese medicine's reliance on the body parts of some endangered species, then writes (pg. 69): "Such regrettable disregard for life has led many in the West to make the misguided leap of logic that Chinese people must not mind eating their own as well, whereas in reality, cannibalism is no doubt as abhorrent to Chinese people as any other group." Where Vegan Viking got the impression that Galloway was saying the exact opposite is beyond me!

Luckily most readers who love these movies and are interested in learning more will get so much from Asia Shock that I can't recommend it enough.

4 out of 5 stars Enthusiastic Summary of Extreme Asian Cinema.......2007-03-22

One of the most vital and exciting developments in the last decade has been the trans-national dissemination of horror films from the east. Often made with one eye firmly on the international market, these films travel very well, without totally foregoing their own cultural specificity. Hideo Nakata's "Ring" has become the totemic film from which all other J-horror has been inspired and although I think western audiences have finally tired of the creepy kids and the long haired ghosts, these films remain persistently innovative and challenging. Galloway's very readable and entertaining book brings together a number of films from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand, that could be loosely categorised as Extreme Asia. It must be noted that Galloway's book is an entirely subjective summary of films which have left an impression on him. It is in no means academic, which lends itself to a wider audience. Therefore Asia Shock is more a device to generate debate and to encourage those with more explorative tastes to seek out material from more exotic climes. In this respect the book succeeds totally. I particularly liked the book because of the number of South Korean films include; films such as "Oldboy," Tale of Two Sisters," and "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" are nothing short of masterpieces and deserve too be recognised by a wide audience. This is Mr. Galloway's quest with Asia Shock and I for one certainly hope he succeeds.

5 out of 5 stars Asia Shock is the connoisseur's definitive guide to the classics of this pop-culture genre........2007-03-06

Written by multinational traveler and lifelong student of Asian film culture and philosophy Patrick Galloway, Asia Shock: Horror and Dark Cinema from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand is a movie buff's guide to the horror and shock cinema of the far east. Asia Shock is not a comprehensive encyclopedia of all films in the genre, but rather a "reviewer's choice" of top shocking picks, some with in-depth reviews and some with capsule reviews, nearly all with extensive notes on unique cultural paradigms, viewing tips, and genre considerations. Focusing on over 50 critical and fan-favorite gory, chilling, and startling Asian horror movies, Asia Shock is the connoisseur's definitive guide to the classics of this pop-culture genre.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes crosses the line between connoisseur and otaku.......2007-02-28

Overall, as someone who enjoys "dark cinema" from Asia, I found this book very enjoyable, not only to learn about new titles that I may enjoy, but also to explore another person's perspective on films that I have already seen. Galloway definitely displays a genuine passion for the subject matter, as well as a profound knowledge of many aspects of Asian art and cinema. In addition to sitting back and enjoying the movies, he has clearly done a good deal of research on them.

However, I do take issue with the way in which some of the narrative veers towards the festishistic 'exotification' of Asia. Female cinemaphiles in particular will probably be put off by Galloway's repeated transformation into a dirty old Wan Chai cheek-toucher, unprofessionally slavering over the assets of various Asian actresses rather than over their performances.

I was also disappointed by an entry describing a Hong Kong cannibalism flick: Galloway mentions how Western audiences might not find cannibalism in Hong Kong such a stretch to imagine. However, rather than attributing such attitudes to racism and xenophobia, he shrugs it off by rationalizing along the lines of 'the Chinese eat a lot of weird food anyways,' implying that because the Chinese occasionally enjoy snake soup, it's only logical that they would break the universally held taboo against eating human flesh. I found this magnificently ignorant.

If you are a person who hates even the slightest hint of a spoiler, then this book is definitely not for you. Understandably, it's very difficult to write a movie review without revealing some of the plot, and Galloway is often put in the difficult position of writing about a movie that simply cannot be described or explored without tearing the gift wrapping of the film just a little bit. Ultimately, this book is best as a companion piece, and readers may wish to do as I did and skip the entries for the films they haven't yet seen, while revisiting and gaining new perspective on films they have already enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2006-11-28

I picked up this book because I already have the same author's book on Samurai movies. It's clear that Patrick Galloway has a deep and discerning love for this material -- the world of Asian cinema is rich and rewarding, but if you're not too familiar with it it can seem too daunting to explore. That's where this book comes in: it not only looks at specific films and genres, but it puts everything into the larger context, so you can really learn about the deeper aspects of what is going on in a particular film. Whether you are new to Asian film, or a long-time aficionado of these particular horror films, there's a lot to learn, and this book is a fun and comprehensive way to really dig deeper.

I can't tell you what I think... I ordered this book on July 18th 2006,every few weeks you would send me a notice that I would have to agree to wait or it would be cancelled. After 3 MONTHS you sent me a notice that it was not in stock, nor would you be re-ordering it. Excuse me if I don't gush with praise.
Aside from that I find your services quite helpful, thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2006-08-06

Summer 2006 preparing for a trip to Thailand, we purchased several guidebooks and DVD's. Culture Shock Thailand was very informative and helpful. It included valueable information we did not find elsewhere. This book is mainly geared toward the business person planning an extended stay or relocation to Thailand. It was not designed for the traveler spending two weeks as a tourist. Overall a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I need.......2006-03-21

Wow, found it. Just off to spend some months in and around Thailand -- and no doubt put yet another book on Thailand on the shelves -- when I get this recommended to me. Great stuff. Very informative, very funny, I mean in places really funny, and a bargain to boot. Slap up to date. Can't wait to enter the kingdom.

5 out of 5 stars Culture comes allive and is fun.......2006-02-11

This book helped my whole family. We read it before arrival but are still using it for reference. It gave us useful leads to international schools, places of worship and hospitals when out of Bangkok. A mixture of the very practical: opening bank accounts, finding your way, doing business, and so on, and a comprehensive guide to Thai culture, with convenient sectionalisation, excellent explanations and situationist in that it places the non-Thai reader into the Thai world and helps him or her stay afloat. Excellent value. Up to date. Hard to think of anything it misses. Very lively. Well written. And makes learning culture fun. Can't ask for more than that.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2006-01-28

Culture Shock Thailand, the updated 2005 version, is simply the best guide to contemporary Thai culture available today. It is also a one-stop shop for the expat in Thailand, or prospective expat, covering everything from health and education (with annotated listings of hospitals and schools in all main towns), opening bank accounts, getting married, and so on. The index could be expanded, but the well set out presentation of sectional text makes it easy to find what you are looking for -- and it is almost certainly there. This guide is also very well written and in a style that is both easy to read and funny. I enjoyed learning. Many books are now available on Thai culture, doing business, settling in, etc. This is simply the best.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting place...........2000-05-23

I found the culture shock series to be enjoyable reading accross the board, and this business based volume both informative and largely up to date. The business information is based on 98 which makes it only slightly dated, with only the latest goverment incentives missing. The sections on dealing with culture differences were very enlightening (non-confrontational style of thailand verses the "you are just a cog, and here is an in your face review of performance" style of the western world). The rehashing of basics you'll find other places is placed here just in case you missed it (not touching a thai's head, use of left hand, etc.). Although this wouldn't be my only source of information, it is a valuable one in a limited field.

5 out of 5 stars As breathtaking as a first kiss.......2007-09-29

Blair Waldorf is having the worst time of her life. She has just completely flubbed her Yale interview, even going so far as to kiss her interviewer; she must contend with a dreadlock-bearing new stepbrother named Aaron, who seems to have some ulterior motives up his sleeve; her mother is marrying a loser whom she has known for hardly no time at all; and, to top it all off, Nate has ditched her for a chesty ten-year-old - well, she looks ten. Luckily, she and Serena van der Woodsen are back on speaking terms, and living it up as BFF's once more. But who knows how long that will last.

The holidays are just around the corner, and with the Upper East Side absolutely freezing, everyone who's loaded is planning on ditching their Marc Jacobs coats, and slipping into their Missoni string bikinis for a Christmas in a tropical place. With Nate Archibald having called it quits with Blair in order to take up a romance with freshman Jenny Humphrey, Blair is anything but ready to say goodbye to the city, and head off to St. Bart's with Serena, where they can sunbathe topless, and, perhaps, have a winter fling. Unfortunately, Serena is being stalked by Flow, the hottest rock star on the planet - at least at the moment - and can't seem to shake him off, and Blair, armed with her iBook plans on holing up in the hotel room writing the essay for her Yale application. Looks like this vacation won't be as sizzling as originally planned. But with Blair's new stepbrother, Aaron, and his pal Miles in tow, you never know when the sparks will fly.

Back in the city, Nate and Jenny are having the time of their life. But with Blair's sudden appearances at every turn, Nate finds himself more and more drawn to the girl he has known and loved for so many years. But then there's Jenny. Sweet, innocent, voluptuous Jenny. Maybe if Nate spent less time being baked, and more time being straight, he'd be able to decide who he's truly lusting over.

Then there's Jenny's older brother, Dan. Since admitting their passion for one another, Dan and Vanessa have been having a whirlwind romance - albeit a dark one - filled with foreign films, cigarettes, strong instant coffee, and lots and lots of black. But since falling in love, Dan finds himself at a standstill regarding his poetry. Suddenly, he's experiencing writer's block firsthand, and it's not a pretty picture. But when Vanessa supposedly does something that betrays both him and Jenny, he wonders if this is the push he needs to get his writing back on track - and to get even.

Three books down, and still Cecily von Ziegesar is going strong; creating intoxicating storylines that leave you craving more, and dying to find out what will happen to S, B, N, and the rest of the gang. Finally Blair and Serena are back to their old tricks, partying 'till the break of dawn, and hamming it up for the cameras. While their friendship is a beautiful thing, and it's wonderful to see them back on speaking terms, the fact that they're not at each other's throats any longer kind of makes the reader miss their feuding; however, their gossip fests about their friends, and their many shopping sprees certainly make up for their catfights. Jenny is still the sweet girl we all know and love from GOSSIP GIRL and YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME; but in AS LONG AS WE'RE TOGETHER, she finally seems to be growing up a bit, and it's nice to see her stand up for herself for once, and not allow people to push her around. Her relationship with her brother, Dan, seems to have changed slightly. Suddenly, he's watching her every move, and not being as friend-like towards her. Instead, seeming more like a jail warden. But, no matter what, you can't help but love each and every one of them - even the slightly creepy Miles, who seems to be stalking Blair. Of course, the installment wouldn't be complete without Gossip Girl reporting straight from...wherever, giving us all the lowdown on what it takes to be a part of the In Crowd, and providing us with the status of every move all of our favorite characters take. As breathtaking as a first kiss.

5 out of 5 stars Another great Gossip Girl.......2007-07-05

Cecily's back with another great Gossip Girl novel. In this installment, it's Christmastime and almost everybodies in a great mood. Blair invites Serena, to go to St. Barts island for Christmas with her because Blairs mom is on her honeymoon. Serena has a lover, Flow, who annoys her buy always giving her presents, unfortunately he doesn't understand how to back off. Aaron's friend Miles, falls in love with Blair, while Blair get disgusted with Aaron for staring at her naked. So Blair and Serena leave early so Blair can wotk on her screenplay for her Yale Admmissions Essay, while Serena gets help from some friends, Kati and Isabel for the best New Years Party ever. Cecily did another great job on this novel, like her other ones. This series is really addicting and breathtaking. I reccomend it to anyone.

This book was for my teenage daughter. She loved it!!

5 out of 5 stars All I Want Is Everything.......2007-04-14

All I Want Is Everything, Gossip Girl novel, written by Cecily von Ziegaeser is a book full of action and drama. I read this book a few weeks ago and I have read it along with all the others in the series. This book is number 3 in the series. So I suggest that you read the two others before starting this one because it might not make sense. In this book, Blair and her new best friend Serena go to St. Bart's for the Christmas vacation with Blair's family. Blair recently broke up with her boyfriend Nate and is meeting all new kinds of guys, but at the same time, she really misses her ex-boyfriend. Also Blair, the main character in this book, is trying to get into Yale. If you are a teenage girl, who loves realistic fiction books, you will love this series! Enjoy your reading!

              3 out of 5 stars So bad it's good.......2007-01-21

All of our favorite obnoxious teenage socialites are back in book 3 and trying to get through midterm exams so they can celebrate Christmas. Nate and Jenny are still together although he seemed so baked all the time that no one is sure, including him, whether or not he really cares for Jenny. Dan and Vanessa are enjoying their decision to make their relationship romantic although the sexual tension may prove too much for the pair. Blair is still feeling down over losing Nate, but her friendship with Serena is better than ever and if they can make it through their exams they will celebrate on the beach in St. Barts. But as usual, her family has surprises in store that will threaten to ruin the vacation that is supposed to be so perfect.

Again, the story and the characters are superficial and ridiculous, but that's why this series is so much fun. Everyone has incredible amounts of money, everyone is stereotypical to the extreme, and readers will enjoy reading about them with voyeristic pleasure. Know that this book is a quick and easy read and the guilt becomes easier to handle.

"All I want Is Everything" by Daaimah S. Poole is a great read. The story is inspirational and true to life.
Kendra Michelle Thomas had a rough life. Her dad left and her mom became an alcoholic. The only joys she has are her brothers and sisters and her singing.
Kendra is tired of her dead end job and low pay. Kendra's life consists of her boring job and boring man Marcus. Her desire is to sing, so she takes a chance and jumps into the music industry. Unfortunately Kendra finds out all that glitters is not gold. Kendra won't give up until her dreams come true.

                5 out of 5 stars I ENJOYED KENDRA'S JOURNEY.......2007-10-03

I really enjoyed "all I want is everything" The story reminded me of my brother Antwan. He has been trying to break into the music industry for years and has had no success. I'm giving it to him to read so he can see if you don't give up you just might make it.

                1 out of 5 stars Extremely Boring.......2007-09-29

It usually takes me 1 to 2 days to read a book~if it is good. I have been reading All I Want Is Everything for more than a week & am only half way through it because it is so boring. The only reason I continue reading it is because I paid for it. After reading all of the other books by the author, I was excited to find that she had a new one & bought it before it was reviewed. I will not make the same mistake with her next one.

3 out of 5 stars Dust yourself off and try again............2007-09-04

The main character Kendra works as a bartender but has dreamed of singing for as long as she can remember. Some girls that she used to go to school with came in and ordered a drink and ask what she's been up to.They pretty much have their lives in order which has Kendra feeling pretty down about her purpose in life and the fact that's she a few years away from thirty doesn't help. She helps her mom who drinks all the time with her siblings. They go through there share of problems like any family would.Kendra decides to make her dreams come true but she finds out that it's not an easy road. It's good that she didn't give up.This book was good as far as inspiration, hope and perseverance goes but I found it to be an okay read. This one is different from the rest of her books. One thing I found annoying that I never found before in her books was the errors. There were alot of times where I would read and it was missing a word and then you would have to go back and re read it.The other books weren't like that.Sometimes the book had a steady pace and then it was slow and then it picked up.I like Daaimah's books and have read everything she has put out.I look forward to reading more of her work. It's a good story for someone that has dreams and trying to make it but it's just an okay read to me.

All I want is everything tells the tale of a singer Kendra Michelle. She has a lot of bumps on the road in her quest to fufill her dreams of being a singer. She does what she has to do to make things pop for herself and her family.I like "AIWIE" because it was about not letting anyone or anything stand in your way of making it happen.
