5 out of 5 stars i never go to a new city without an Access guide.......2007-09-06

i have travelled extensively for 30 yrs. i never go anywhere without 3 books: 1. Access guide for neighborhood details, a sense of where things are, and locals' favorite places. 2. Michelin's Green guide for an erudite perspective on history, culture, arts, etc. and 3. Frommer's for their "best of" pages.

when i lived in London, i took out my London Access book every week to plan where i would go that weekend. Every time i move to a new city i buy an Access guide to help me become a local. It is a great resource for travellers and new residents.

3 out of 5 stars Too much information?.......2007-03-26

I just got back from a weeklong trip to London and this was one of several guidebooks I took with me. The positive is that there's a lot of information listed and from talking to London friends, it's fairly good information. The hip happening restaurants are in there. I didn't like the format -- everything is listed by neighborhood but within each section, it's mixed so for instance, you cannot simply find a list of all their restaurants in Mayfair, you must flip through the entire Mayfair section to see the restaurant listings.

Ultimately, I found I used some of my other guidebooks a lot more.

We took my wheelchair bound mother to London recently and this book was a great help!! And people in London were much more helpful with opening doors, getting through doorways, into taxis, etc than they are here in the states! This is a great book for anyone looking to travel in London with a wheelchair!

Book Description

London is the quintessential tourist destination, at once able to be all things to all people. This 9th Edition of Access London reveals this ever-changing kaleidoscope of a metropolis in all its glory as it guides travelers down the streets and into its very heart.

A thriving, invigorating mix of old and new, monarchy and democracy, London's unique character has long ensured it a special place within the heart of England. Visitors love this city that is at once ancient and modern, reserved and tempestuous: a provincial settlement on the edge of the civilized world, a trading district dominated by merchants and aldermen, a royal stronghold, a center of politics, power and culture - the city's many faces endears it to many travelers.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely a useful guide book.......2004-11-08

We used Access London on our Honeymoon in 2000, and it was invaluable. It helped us find everything we wanted to visit, especially since we studied it beforehand, and marked all the places that were interesting. The maps seemed fine, and we liked the way we could look at the numbered list and find the items on the maps. The color coding was very helpful, and we always had our copy with us wherever we went.

We recommend this book, and the Paris one as well.

3 out of 5 stars Cannot get by using this guide only.......2004-09-24

A friend gave me this guide book as a birthday gift for my trip to London. Having always travelled with Lonely Planet guide books, I hesitated before finally deciding not to buy the Lonely Planet guide as a complement to this one (I also already had a Knopff map guide)... Big mistake! First of all, this guide book does not have a tube map!!! Second, the maps of the different boroughs are not very good. Also, the information is all thrown together so you have restaurants and hotels amidst tourist attractions. Even thought the titles are color coded, this is not very practical, making it harder to find the information you need.

I also found that this guide book did not include sufficient practical information that one might need when travelling: addresses for Internet cafés, laundromats, information for women travelling alone, etc, which Lonely Planet guides offer extensively. Furthermore, the recommendations in this guide book, in terms of restaurants and hotels, seemed more suitable for "older" travellers and travellers with a larger budget. If you are young or if you are looking for the "cool" places to hang out, this guide will not be very helpful.

One good thing about this guide book though is that it has detailed background information on the different tourist attractions one might visit. This is nice to have when you are not taking a guided tour.

Overall, this guide book is OK, but not good enough to be the only book you rely on during your trip.

5 out of 5 stars BEST GUIDE EVER.......2004-01-11

I work in a book store,so, believe me, I have had plenty of time to look at travel books and I have to say that these access guides are the best. There are a couple of reasons why. First off, the pages are thicker paper so they wont tear as easily if you are carrying it aound every day and thumbing thru it constantly like i was!! They also color code the listings..green for parks, blue for hotels, you get the idea. As another person said before, its all by area so you can always se whats up where you are..very nice. I highly reccomend it and all the others!!

5 out of 5 stars Access guides are great but shoud be updated!.......2003-08-09

I have used "Access" city guides for many years and have found them to be excellent! They are easy to understand with lots of information that is quite useful. In addition, they are a lightweight and handy size. Unfortunately, they are not updated often, in fact I just purchased "Access London" eighth edition ( I have all of the previous editions) and have found it to be a repeat of the previous two editions. Much of the guide is out of date. This is disappointing,as I have come to rely on "Access" guides to plan trips. I now will have to use a more current guide.

5 out of 5 stars The best single series of guides.......2002-04-19

Richard Saul Wurman transformed the world of guidebooks, beginning more that 20 years ago with Access Los Angeles. An architect and graphic artist, Wurman breaks cities into neighborhoods. Maps, the intelligent use of color and good information combine to make this series the best single set of guidebooks on the market.

The London guide is typical; and excellent. Another plus of the Access guides is the excellent insider reviews of hotels and restaurants. Also, best bets by locals often take you off the beaten path to places the locals frequent. I have yet to be disappointed.

This is the one you will tuck in your pocket or stash in your shoulderpack as you explore London.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the disabled traveller.......2001-09-14

I use a wheelchair and travel frequently. This series of 3 books (ACCESS IN LONDON and its companion volumes: ACCESS IN PARIS and ACCESS IN ISRAEL) are the most thorough and useful travel guides for a disabled traveller that I have ever seen. If you have a disability and are planning a trip to London, buy this book! I wish the authors would write ACCESS guides to other cities and countries, as well.

2 out of 5 stars Good background preparation, but needs update !.......1999-04-26

ACCESS IN LONDON was very good preparation, but needs an update (last published in 1996). There have been alot of changes-and improvements.

5 out of 5 stars Best disability travel book on London.......1999-04-19

This is a wonderful book for anyone who has mobility problems. I am a librarian at Moss Rehab Hospital in Philadelphia and run a travel hotline for the disabled. I recommend this book often and know of no other source of information that is as comprehensive. Happy traveling!!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable!.......1998-09-30

Having just taken my parents on their first trip to London(dad uses a wheelchair), I know exactly how valuable this exhaustive guide is. We couldn't have survived without it. I did literally hundreds of hours of online research looking for information about disabled access in London, and found information to be very scattered and sporadic. I was literally reduced to begging on a usenet group on European travel for Londoners to share their impressions with me--when one of those very Londoners found Access in London.

No disabled traveler to London should be without this book, which tells you everything you need to know about the accessibility of each and every London attraction, outlines accessible hotels (and explains just exactly *how* accessible each one is), and even offers a "good loo map." Want to know if the West End theater you want to attend can accommodate a wheelchair? Interested in attending a match at Wembley Stadium or getting on the intercity train? This guide has it all, in detail, and it's not written by a gang of able-bodied travel writers guessing at what constitutes "accessible." Both disabled and able-bodied researchers scoured London together to create this gem. It'll tell you exactly how many steps lead into a hotel lobby, where the ramped entrance to a church is, how good the "wheelchair seats" are at a theater, and much more.

Don't leave home without it.

                Book Description

Skud is gritty, disturbing, and smart: a story about the last year of high school as told by four intense young men facing their individual demons. Tommy, Brad, Andy, and Shane are all making their uncertain way to a life outside school. Tommy, a model student, is heading for the military to fly fighter jets, in order to free himself from his abusive mother. Brad is being scouted for the Junior B hockey team to satisfy his ambitious dad. Andy has an audition for a role as a punk that could launch his acting career - all he needs is someone who can teach him the "hard stare" and cool moves. He turns to Shane, a gang member who rules the street, complete with knife and gun.

The shells that the boys have constructed around themselves start coming apart when Tommy suspects Andy of seeing his girlfriend, Brad goads him into a confrontation, and Shane comes to Andy's aid. The tragic outcome will leave readers reexamining their own life choices.

                5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2003-06-21

Skud is told through the eyes of 4 teens living in a mixed up world filled with violence, rage and sorrow.

Brad is a hotshot hockey player egged on by his demanding father and taught to get his way by any means (like bodychecking) since he was four years old.

Andy is an aspiring actor with dreams of making it big, directing his own movies and living the good life. But when he meets Shane, the toughest guy in the high school, who sells drugs and has killed before, everything changes. Andy sees the softer side of Shane, the one mourning his younger brother, who was killed with a breadknife.

Tommy is the school's golden boy. On the honour roll, soccer team; a cadet who wants to fly F-16s and is going places. But when his girlfriend Sheila breaks up with him, things slowly start unravelling and through the perspectives of these 4 guys, the story of pain unfolds. It's absolutely brilliant.

                5 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: SKUD.......2003-04-14

"...they killed 40 or 50 of them..."
--US Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld

                "Violence, violence
It's the only thing that'll make you see sense"
                --Mott the Hoople

Meet the four high school seniors from Vancouver who narrate SKUD:

                Brad:
"We used to practice behind the garage. Me in shorts and T-shirt, with only my [hockey] stick for protection. He had a bucket of stones. He throws, I have to deflect them. I smack the rock or the rock smacks me. He throws hard. If I whimper, he throws harder.
"Once I took my stick and I knocked down a bee's hive. Just to see if I could. Whether I could take it or not. I got thirty-two stings. It was nothing compared to those stones. My dad trained me well."

                Tommy:
"Next year I move to the island to train as a fighter pilot. I'll be flying F-16s. See the world. At twice the speed of sound. Once you're strapped in, you're the jet, the jet is you. Not virtual reality. Reality reality. It's you. You plug into it. Become One. The oxygen, the communications. Computer at your fingertips. Only now, you're not this skin and bone, this weakness, this nothing. Now your skin is titanium. Your ears are enhanced radar. Your eyes are infrared thermal sights. You move stratospheric. You have smart bombs, glide bombs, Maverick missile-seeker heads. Boom. You hit the speed of sound once. Boom. You hit it twice. And you keep going. You're passing one thousand two hundred klicks an hour, one thousand three hundred, four hundred, five hundred. And nothing stops you, nothing touches you. You are untouchable."

                Shane:
"Once upon a time I had a good backup. I had the best backup in the world.
"He'd take it for me, or me for him, whatever kept us alive. Since we were three, four, five.
"Mama always had a new guy who'd come home tanked, bust us up. Once, I was twelve, New Guy was slamming my face in the wall, painting the plaster red. My backup picks up Mama's hot iron and presses his butt. It worked. New Guy let me go.
"No matter who New Guy was we'd stand up together. Pay the price together. Be the eyes in back of each other's heads.
"We had to. We were brothers."

                Andy:
"...I've sworn never to fight unless it's been rehearsed by a certified fight choreographer, and I doubt that Tommy's here for rehearsal.
                "He moves closer.
" 'She said you had no interest in her,' I tell him. 'It was over.'
"I immediately wish I could vacuum the words as they spill from my lips. His eyelids go drowsy, hang there like the practice gliders he flies in the sky.
"Then he says, 'You want interest? Here.'
"I don't see it coming. One fist to the gut and I'm down. At least he didn't hit my face."

Inspired by the characters in his play, War, award-winning playwright Dennis Foon has written a gritty tale of four young men, each of whom is coming to terms with his future while dealing with his past. SKUD is the story of the reactions that result when these four individuals smash into each other like highly charged particles in an accelerator.

                Brad:
"You have to draw the line in the sand. Make it very clear to the world that no more trespasses will be tolerated. If you do not, there will be a feeding frenzy. The enemy will pick your bones."

Behind this story of hormones and hatred and misplaced honor is a thematic landscape of violence: the culture of violence, the facets of violence, and how young men in our culture are so frequently given no other tools, so that they have only one way of responding to conflict, to frustration, to disappointment, to desire, to injustice. The response to emotion is explosion. Even the young man who does not want his bankable face damaged, since his aspirations lie in a future as an actor, is immersed in our culture's entertainment industry which relies so heavily on glorifying violence to sell tickets.

"...how many pistols smoking coming from a broken family
                i'm sick of being tired

sick of tha sirens, body bags, and tha gun firing
tell bush to push tha button cause i'm fed
tired of hearin' these voices in my head
                tha streetz R Deathrow"
                --2Pac

When Sports reports the results of the latest car race, the video they roll always includes a birds-eye view of the obligatory crash, followed by a look at who pulled out of the collision in one piece to get the checkered flag. Wall-to-wall military reports start sounding like some coach's assessment of his team's free throw percentage or efficacy in converting third down plays.

Leaving it to readers to decide who the victor is, I will note that this SKUD leaves none of these young men unscathed. Certainly, living amidst our culture of violence, how could it be otherwise?
