Book Description
After 20 years of living in Italy, Tim Parks, whom Joseph Brodsky, has called "the nest British author working today," spent a full year following the fortunes-and misfortunes-of the Verona football-oops! Soccer-club. Here is his rollicking report. Fro Udine to Catania, from San Siro to the Olimpico, traveling with the fans and the players from the tip to the toe of Italy, Tim Parks offers a highly personal account of his relationship with a country, its people, and its national sport. The fans, as always are accused of vulgarity, racism, and violence. The police are ambiguous, the journeys exhausting, the referees unforgivable, the anecdotes hilarious. In a world stripped of idealism and increasingly bereft of religion, Parks suggests that soccer offers a new and fiercely ironic way of engaging with the sacred.

Save your money....I have never thrown away a calcio book--until now.......2006-06-25
I have never written a review before; I have also never thrown away a calcio book. After reading this book, I can no longer say either.
If you get your kicks reading books about anything but calcio; if you get your kicks reading "Dio boia and Dio can" seemingly a billion times in the first 50 pages, and reading maybe 2 pages worth of calcio in the same stretch, then this book is for you. If, like me, you want to read about calcio...the game, the teams, the players, the true culture, then this is not the book for you. Save your money and buy "Calcio" by Foot, instead.
ultimately nothing profoundly new here.......2005-06-24
It's not that this isn't a good book but if you've read any of these "follow the club for a season" book, it really offers nothing new other than following a team in another nation. Yes, we find out that all supporters seem hung up on chldish racist/sexist comments/chants. I did like the fact he incorporated Web site BBS postings as many of those were a laugh.
I mean, I do get the whole group mentality male bonding deal that soccer fandom is all about but what i really wanted to know more than anything from this book was why Italian soccer is so popular yet so mindnumbingly dull to watch. How many 0-0, 1-0 matches does Italian Serie A produce? I wanted to find out why a vibrant and colorful culture of fandom (and food, art, fashion, politics, etc.) can somehow produce possibly the worst excuse for entertainment on the soccer pitch ever.
An Interesting Season.......2004-07-20
This is a very interesting book for a variety of reasons. The author, Tim Parks, is British, but has lived many years in Verona. He has developed a keen understanding of the passion of Italian calcio (football), along with the more negative facets: bitter provincial rivalries, racism, and the hard-core fan element called the "ultras." There are 34 chapters in the book to reflect the same number of game days in the Italian season. (Since the publication of this book, the Italian first division plays 38 games.)
This well-documented and detailed book takes on a different perspective. Parks is an acclaimed published author. He easily could have written a "safe" documentary about life with a professional team. But he chose a different route: he sat with the ultras during home games, learned their vulgar and sometimes racist chants, and traveled with them on long bus/train rides for away matches. With the exception of one away game when he was the official guest of the team, and another match when he reported the events from the press box. In essence, he was accepted by the most fanatical element of Hellas Verona supporters. Although this provided him with a rare insight, his objectivity may have been affected by such personal involvement.
Hellas Verona has a reputation for having some of the most racist supporters in Italy. Parks spares no details about this volatile subject, but he also explains the bitter historical club rivalries throughout the Serie A. His game summaries are intriguing, and full of local color to keep the reader interested. He is able to describe game action in an appealing fashion, along with the fan reactions that he personally witnessed.
He interviews the fans, as well as the actual team players and coaches. He finds himself being drawn into the lives of the ultras, along with their chants during the actual games. He also has a good understanding of the Italian psyche, whether it be on the field, or away from it.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.
Life on the "curva sud" with a real fan.......2003-03-10
An English academic, living and teaching in Northern Italy for the past twenty years, Tim Parks offers a colorful, rich, detailed account of a year (2000-01) following his historic local football club, Hellas Verona. This is a week-by-week, blow-by-blow account, up close and very personal. He starts as an interested observer and becomes a believer.
Better that this is written by a man of letters than by a journalist or a sportswriter, Parks at times becomes perhaps literate in studying the passion behind the football fans who seem to live and die by the fortunes of their favorites. Best of all, Parks chose a season that provided a riveting conclusion to a season of ups and downs. Sadly, a quick look at Italy's Serie A standings in early 2003 finds Hellas mired in mid-level Serie B.
Hellas fans are, at times, boisterous, irreverent, profane, vulgar, and, among the hard core, loyal to a fist fight and to a fault. Seeing them week by week, after a crazed introduction on the first, mind numbing rod trip to the south, Parks offers the insight of an Englishman not unfamiliar with football hooligans but also willing to try to understand the mind and life of the devoted Hellas fan.
Enjoy the passion.
You'll be gripped from start to finish.......2002-12-23
Without doubt this is the best football book that I've ever read. Right from the start Tim Parks actually draws the reader into the unfolding drama and story, rather than it just being a case of you reading a book and just taking information in. You'll find yourself eagerly flicking pages to find out what happened next, sometimes I read this book deep (and I mean, deep!) into the early morning rather than put the book down.
Basically this book is all about Hellas Verona football club in Italy, and their battle to stay in the top division in Italy, Serie A. They are one of the most, if not the most, unfashionable clubs in Italy to support, due to the media's overblown coverage of the club's racism problems.
In this book you'll find out about many interesting fans and the sometimes hilarious, sometimes appalling, things they got upto throughout a tense season. It's a totally factual account and that makes this all the more intriguing. If you thought you knew everything about Italian football then take a read of this, you'll be surprised at what really goes on. You thought rivalry was bad in English football!
Not only did Verona have to battle the media and their reputation, but added to that was the fact that they did not have the resources of huge clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus.
Tim Parks wrote this book extremely well, never baffling the reader or losing the plot. It's very enjoyable and added to that you'll learn snippets of the Italian language and all about the Italian way of life.
A superb read.
Book Description
Although Nelson dominates the naval history of the late eighteenth century, in many respects his achievements marked the culmination of a developing tactical tradition in the Royal Navy. The contribution of his predecessors has been neglected, however, largely because so few admirals have received proper modern study. Precursors of Nelson adjusts the record by providing a series of in-depth biographical essays of the most important figures of the period, each written by a well-known specialist in the field. Contributors include Peter le Fevre on Torrington, John B. Hattendorf on Rook and Shovell, Timothy Bean and Ann Coats on Leake, Chris Ware on Byng, David Aldridge on Norris, Daniel Baugh on Wager, Richard Harding on Vernon, Nicolas Rodger on Anson, Ruddock Mackay on Hawke, Kenneth Breen on Rodney, Roger Knight on Howe, Michael Duffy on Hood, Roger Morris on Barham, Pat Crimmin on St. Vincent, Andrew Lambert on Cornwallis, and Brian Lavery on Keith.

Definitive book of the Coast to Coast, with excellent photos.......1998-09-29
According to some of three of my friends the book 'Wainwright's Coast to Coast' has a lot to answer for. At a party on New Years Eve, 1994, the hostess passed around the book in question. I just had time to read a bit of the introductory material inside the dust jacket, and look through the photographs, taken by Derry Brabbs. Loads of excellent pictures of the wilds of northern England, taken throughout the year in all types of lighting conditions from blue summer skies to overcast darkness brooding over snow covered mountains.
Before the end of January 1995, I had booked accommodation on the walk for four adults at the end of August. Well my web site lists the trials and tribulations of that long trek in Wainwright's footsteps.
The text of the book describes the stages of the walk, and gives some of the history of the places visited, without going into the actual details of the route in much depth. The book is not so much a walkers guide book, like some of Wainwright's work on the mountains of the Lake District, but rather a coffee table book, which may inspire some brave souls to actually try it for themselves.
The photos are what make up the largest part of the book, and they are indeed excellent. All the best views of the route are shown, plus some which are quite a way off the path, like the pictures of the various ancient crosses in the North York Moors. Although it isn't raining or thick with mist in any of the shots, there are many which show dark clouds, rivers swollen with rain, and some rather wintery scenes with ice and snow. This tries to show the hills as they really, not like the pretty blue skied postcards one so often sees. Although I did wonder how he managed to get shots of some the Lake District areas without any people in them? He probably got up very early in the morning.

What does surprise me is that Amazon lists the book as being 'out of print'.

My most treasured cook book.......2004-07-23
This book has been my bible for entertainment since I bought it at least 7 years ago. I was on business in Austin, Texas and found it in the airport book store, luckily. Homemade salsas, bbq sauces, ointments and marinades, guides to grilling and smoking all kinds of beef, chicken, pork, fish, lamb...how to make sausages, how to make pizza from scratch and cook them on the grill, how to grill sandwhiches...tons of bbq type side dishes...alchoholic and non type drinks, and special deserts. All my most favored recipes have come from this book. Not one thing I have made has been a disspointment and this book has helped me earn the reputation of being one of the best bbq entertainers around.
My personal favorites:
spicy lemon chicken
molasses mop beef ribs
avocado salsa
picadillo salsa
Western Red BBQ sauce
bbq pizza (make dough from scratch!)
smoked t bone steaks with green chile butter
marinaded and grilled mushrooms, red onions, vegetables
rosemary new potatoes
grilled sweet potatoe planks
marinaded red pepper & jalepeno Cole Slaw (no mayonaise!)
jack daniels pudding cake
pineapple tequila
pineapple tequila margaritas
Grilled peaches with walnut oil on vanilla bean ice cream
I am going from memory on the titles, but I have captured the essence. If you like to grill, or have an affinity for chips and salsa, smoked meats, spicy foods, beer or tequila..this book will not dissappoint. Even if you don't love all those things you will find killer recipes here. And hey, I don't even know the author (unfortunately) I just love this book.
One hot cookbook.......2003-08-24
This book is full of great-tasting, well-written recipes. I have been using it for a number of years with consistently good results. There is a useful resources section in the back for getting ingredients you might not be able to locally.
a great summer cookbook.......2000-05-06
I love the Kerr family thinking when it comes to food-- big, blowsy, can't-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing type thinking. I've used this cookbook for five years, and everything I make has great, authentic Tex-Mex taste. I'd take any advice Park Kerr is giving out.
Sizzle Spicy Smackaroo.......1998-08-14
Great cookbook! The recipes are easy to understand and even better tasting. Mr. Kerr has a flair for setting the mood for each of his recipes with anecdotal descriptions of how to serve and what to serve with the dish. The only drawback is sometimes the recipes call for ingredients that are not easily obtained (common grocery store), but he warns of that in the book! It's a good read and a great cookbook.

Phebe Knight has always wanted to be a ballerina. But now, one year away from joining the Company, her mind begins to wander. To clear her head, she decides to visit her father, who lives in Switzerland. There, she meets Nikolai Kotalev, a teenage chess champion, who is looking for the legendary Stas Vlajnik, the teacher who will show him how to be a grand master capable of both grace and speed. Phebe organizes a search across Europe to help Nikolai find the elusive Stas. And all the while, Phebe and Nikolai study each other's obsessions to find the lives they want. What are they each willing to pay for perfection and beauty?
Customer Reviews:
Chess boy meets ballet girl in a short but brilliant book.......2004-03-17
This book is unlike any YA novel I have read. It is incredibly well-written, very literary, and still accessible to a wide variety of readers because the main characters are a boy and a girl, and because it's so short.
Phebe Knight is training to be a ballerina. Normally she's very dedicated, but lately she has trouble concentrating. Her teachers and mother decide a change of scenery may help, and they send her to Geneva, Switzerland to stay with her father for three months. Phebe's father is a diplomat, and this is how Phebe meets Nikolai.
Nikolai is a fifteen year old chess genius who has recently become estranged from his father who pushed him to extremes to be able to win and make money. Nikolai left his father to pursue his freedom and to study chess with the legendary, elusive, unstable Stas Vlajnik. Phebe is unsuccessful in her desire to focus on ballet, but she becomes, possibly for the first time, genuinely caring towards others. She finally begins to accept things about her father, and spends all her time with Nikolai, studying chess, how he thinks, and trying to help him find Vlajnik.
The second half of the book is spent all over Europe as they travel from chess tournaments searching for Vlajnik. The developments in the characters are nuanced and beautifully and truthfully written. When I finished this book I wanted to read everything by the author, and read up more on chess.
The Kings Are Already Asleep.......2003-11-13
After reading My Heartbeat, a quick and enjoyable, though easy, read, I was expecting a similar quality out of The Kings Are Already Here. I wanted to like the characters; I wanted to feel for their situations. Yet they seemed so two-dimensional: Phebe questioning her ballet, Nikolai searching for a lost chess master. They didn't seem to have any other qualities, and I couldn't feel any sympathy for them. In other words, I guess they just seemed bland. Pencilled outlines on paper.
The story itself was equally uncompelling, although perhaps I just wasn't the right reader for the book's story line. I found myself finding excuses not to pick up the book and keep reading, always a bad sign. I never finished it.
When Ms. Freymann-Weyr's next book comes out, I hope to find myself drawn to it as I was to My Heartbeat. Yet there are different books for different people, and perhaps I simply wasn't the right person for The Kings Are Already Here.
This is the BEST!.......2003-11-04
I was afraid I wouldn't like this as much as Freymann-Weyr's other books, MY HEARTBEAT and WHEN I WAS OLDER... but I was totally hooked. Even before I got to college I knew that the choices I make mean something else has to be given up -- and this is the first novel I've read that deals with that: the cost of being committed to something. I like that there are no simple "right" answers in this book ... that it's thoughtful and yet also suspenseful and funny. I hope she'll write another book soon...
thought provoking.......2003-05-04
I've always been a sucker for books about gifted teens, but usually they are gifted in music. I found the combination and comparison of chess and ballet fascinating. The author doesn't fall for any of the easy traps like trying to make a love story here - though it is not that her teens are uninterested in sex or that they don't sense the possiblity of each other. She shows that becoming the best at anything involves a price and only we can decide if that price is worth it. Sometimes the alternating first person narrative, was a little hard to follow, but ultimately this was a satisfying book
Elegant and Sophisticated.......2003-04-24
I adored this book. Both the characters and the places they go to are beautifully and intricately described. I loved being taken from the dance studio in New York to Switzerland and then all over on a European odyssey to find the chess Grandmaster. I knew almost nothing about chess or ballet before I read Kings and I learned so much. I could feel the tension at the barre and the chess table even though I am neither a dancer nor a chess player. The relationship between Phebe and Kolya is so complicated and fragile. I really wanted there to be romance between the two of them, but somehow it's all the more interesting that there isn't. The only thing I am sincerely hoping for is that the author will write a sequel. I am too in love with the characters not to know what happens next. Both young and old will find this a wonderful story. I highly recommend it for anyone. As a p.s., I think this would make a gorgeous movie...
