4 out of 5 stars It's ok if you want to give it a three.......2007-09-06

I'm a huge Blood Sword fan and to be frankly honest, I grew up with these comics and stopped reading for about twelve years after they got canceled. Having the chance to have at least a partial collection of these titles in graphic novel form is a treat I can't begin to describe. But I'm not totally sold out and make no mistake, this title has a few shortcomings that I think should be mentioned. First off and to get it out of the way, grammar. Though the translation flows fine more often than not, there are moments when spelling and syntax could very well feel messed up. But as various translations have proven, it's not the grammar that counts but what's between the lines and if you like kung fu movies then you should really enjoy this title and the beautiful artwork showcased throughout. I clearly remember re-passing the pages of the original titles because I loved the art so much and the same still holds up til today. If you love kung fu, you should check this title at all cost. If you think kung fu is lame, fake etc, you might be better of checking something else out.

The First Swords were forged by the gods as pieces in a great game, to be scattered across the world for mortals to fight over. Each of the 12 Swords was infused with a unique, powerful ability: the Sword of Siege could reduce a castle to rubble; Coinspinner would bring its wielder phenomenal luck; Shieldbreaker could best any weapon, even another Sword; Sightblinder would make its wielder appear to others as someone either greatly loved or greatly feared. These three books--the First, Second, and Third Book of Swords, first published in 1983 and 1984 and combined here in one volume--follow the slippery Swords as they pass from hand to hand, from queen to commoner and back again.

This trilogy probably qualifies as a fantasy classic just because it's such a great story. And it's probably so well loved because Saberhagen is such a genius. But what really cements the Swords books in the fantasy canon is simply that they tell a smart, involving story without ever getting bogged down in details. Many current authors, with their endless sequels and flabby plot lines, could learn from Saberhagen's tight pacing. Just as his equally engaging Berserker stories are a must for SF fans, no fantasy reader should miss out on these well-executed (and addictive!) books. --Paul Hughes

    Book Description

Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords novels have captivated fantasy readers for more than a decade. Here, now available in one volume, are the three books that started it all.For a game the gods have given the world twelve Swords of Power so that they might be amused as the nations battle for their possession. But Vulcan the Smith has had his own little joke: the Swords can kill the gods themselves. What started out as Divine Jest has become all too serious as the gods fight to recover the Swords, and mortals discover that the mantle of power is more delicious and more terrible than anything they could have imagined.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A good fantasy read.......2007-09-08

The setting takes place on earth and the Greek gods on high. They decide to play a game with vulcan making twelve swords, each with a special power. The swords are given to humans who are spun in a fantastic plot of world domination and even god killing. At times a bit of megalomania comes in but it is such great read, you won't be disapointed.

    3 out of 5 stars A decent read mostly.......2007-01-11

The first book of swords is the best.It was good and didn't wander too much,Saberhagen just tries to fit too much in and eventually runs the story to the ground. But I repeat Read the first three anyways, they do make for a good read.

    4 out of 5 stars great fun!.......2005-11-21

This book will never be mistaken as great literature, but it sure was a fun read. Lots of nice plot devices, and a unique story idea!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2005-09-02

Fred Saberhagen is a master at writing a fast paced, tight story. This trilogy is a fantasy classic and I would recommend it along with the Empire of the East trilogy to anyone. With Gods, magic, and twelve mythical swords, adventure abounds in this story. I would recommend his Lost Swords series as well, which can be picked up in collected editions much like this original tale.

    4 out of 5 stars A fantastic series of Sci-Fi Fantasy.......2005-08-26

I remember picking up these books as a kid, reading the first 30 pages and then let it sit on my shelf for 2-3 years. When I finally got around to reading them, however, I found myself itching for the next book and quickly caught up to the publishing schedule. After that it was like withdrawls - waiting and waiting for the next Sword book was torturous and then i would gobble it down in a weekend when it finally arrived.
My only negative critiques are these:
    1. The first book of the series is very slow (and by book I mean the introduction of the story and the storyline of the first sword). It will take some constitution to get through it. After that it is gets better and better.
    2. There are a lot of books. Be prepared to enjoy yourself so much that you end up buying them all.
    3. Dispite how good these books were, they never matched the quality of Empire of the East (a five star if I ever read one). My recommendation would be to read the first three books, then go back and read Empire of the East. That's the order I read them in and I am glad I did.

    Book Description

In this remarkable interpretation of the foundation of Aikido technique, Gaku Homma focuses on the relationship between Japanese swordsmanship and open-hand movement, uniting historical tradition with the contemporary development of the art of Aikido. Although the study of Kenjutsu and Aikido have long been associated, this is the first book in which actual Aikido techniques are related to sequences used with the sword. Sixteen hundred frame-by-frame photos mirror the movement shared by both arts.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars original and independent.......2007-04-03

I love Gaku Homma's books for their straightforwardness. This one is exactly what the subtitle says it is. I wish there were a higher text-to-photo ratio, but mostly I wish Gaku Homma had finished the series of which this was the first book. If you train in aikido already, I suspect there's a good chance you've seen this material already. But if you train in other martial arts and have an interest in aikido, I think this book could be very informative for you.

5 out of 5 stars best technique book.......2005-09-11

This is the best technique book I have ever read. The book is very practical in the order that it is layed out; and clear in showing the relationship between the the arts. The clearity and order of the photos make it very easy to follow each technique from start to finish. Each technique is true to its Japanese art; their does not look to have any mix of other arts or peronal change to any of the movements. This is an excelent book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of Aikido's Link to Swordfighting.......2004-11-17

This book will deepen your understanding of how Aikido techniques are linked to sword fighting. An excellent, visual presentation of Aikido footwork, timing and mental attitude. I wish Mr. Homma would complete the series he had planned with the publication of this book. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-04-02

This book shows in great detail how aikido empty hand techniques related to techniques with weapons.

5 out of 5 stars The Aikido book.......2001-03-22

I found the book very good, useful and interesting. It shows that even though Aikido is gracful it is also dangerous.

Will Asagi find the nephew and make the sword his?

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars By the Sword.......2007-03-21

The story is a picaresque adventure set in ancient Japan, involving a demon-hunting youth who hooks up with half-demon girl Kaede to go on a Quest. Accompanying the girl is her father, a once mighty and evil demon who reformed because his wife nagged him. Now he is stuck in the form of a foot-high human, who can sometimes be found perched on his daughter's head. As these three travel on their Quest-the-nature-of-which-I-forget-exactly, they encounter other demon hunters, enemy demons with funky Chinese accents, and weird critters from Japanese folklore.

The feudal/action/comedy/horror/quest setup gives this a resemblance of sorts to INUYASHA. But BY THE SWORD is more goofy, amiable, and low-key. The characters seem universally prone to childish petulance and (occasionally) criminal irresponsibility, but endearingly so. I like the way Matoh's female characters are just as immature as the males.

The art probably looked a lot better in the original magazine format. Matoh tends to use many small panels per page, and to fill them in completely with detailed background. This contributes to a boxed in, cluttered and claustrophobic look. It looks great when she opens it up, but here she does this rarely. Also, Matoh doesn't quite take advantage of the visual opportunities. Many of the scenes involving the hunter talking to the tiny demon look exactly as though the demon was a normal sized man standing back a bit, for example. And the "mug shot" (my favorite bit) should definitely have been a full-page spread. Despite all this, it successfully conveys both supernatural eerie-ness and a sense of fun.

BY THE SWORD is rated 13 plus, for the swordplay and monsters . There is no sexual banter, lechery, or fan-service. There is some nudity of an adult woman, shown in a non-sleazy, nonviolent, and non-sexual context. And yes, the publishers edited it so that part of the breast is obscured. It doesn't affect the story or even ruin the picture, so for me that was not a problem.

4 out of 5 stars Hoping for Improvement.......2005-05-05

I was dissappointe by this first book; it lacks the flow that FAKE had. The action is choppy at best, leaving you to wonder "what just happened?"

I did give this book four stars because I think it has potential. Though it has a general sort of plot, (many elements suspitiously like those of "Inuyasha"), I chose to hope that it will evolve into something interesting and intricate.

At least it isn't BAD, just a little flat.

Give it a try, it's only the first book.

        1 out of 5 stars I haven't read the title, but warning it's edited........2005-04-12

I don't support editing at all, and with the issues that Tenjo Tenge is facing, and the editing of the head in Descendents of Darkness 4, this editing out of the nipple is ADV work.

            Book Description

In the late-medieval land of Barnard, between the mountains and sea, the peaceful lifestyle of the people has been shattered by fear. Monsters, known as the Dark Ones, roam the land, killing indiscriminately. The townsfolk fear to venture out from their homes, and travel from town to town has become a risk to life and limb. To protect the people from this terror, several guilds have sprung up, including the Guild of Assassins and the Guild of Mercenaries. To go out into the world, or travel across the wilderness, hired mercenaries are essential. One man has built a reputation as an especially fierce monster-killer—a man known as Leroy Schvartzer. A former high-ranking member of the Guild of Mercenaries, Leroy has struck out on his own. Many try to hire for his superior skills, but Leroy has his own agenda. He has a mission to accomplish, a vow to fulfill. This vow is known only to himself, and his one companion—his sentient long-sword Ragnarok.
