Book Description
Each card in this inspiring deck offers an idea to stretch your approach to observing and chronicling the daily events around you. You'll learn how to harness the power of words (what to write about, and what to write with), explore extreme photography techniques without having any previous photography experience, focus on the little things (like a two-inch section of a painted mural you drive by every day), and discover unusual ways to create a self-portrait (from plastic wrap and tree lights, to close-ups of your hands). Includes 50 cards and a creativity notebook to record your own art-journal explorations.
Customer Reviews:
Very Cool Concept.......2007-09-26
I love these creativity cards! The graphics on one side are unique, interesting, colorful, and eye catching. The prompts on the flipside are thought-provoking, meaningful, and different. The small journal is a great creative jumpstart in itself. I love the colors and techniques that were used to produce the backgrounds. Think I'll even attempt to create some of those myself. The box housing the creativity cards and journal is sturdy and pleasant to look at.
This is a fresh concept, and I am enjoying this package very much.
By the way, this is in no way a "how to" of any type. It is intended to make you think about doing old things in a fresh way or to help you attempt something new altogether.
Highly recommended.
Wow!.......2007-08-05
these cards are amazing. each one is a little piece of art in itself. you'll want to frame and hang them. except then you wouldn't be able to turn them over and get a shot in the arm of inspiration... yummy. i'm too afraid to work in the little workbook as yet, tho. i don't wanna mess it up. :)
if you're looking for cutesy, pretty art, tho, look somewhere else. this is real, gritty from-the-soul art. the kind that hits you "right there". and hopefully will help you make your own journal pages that do the same.
several of them are geared towards photography but lots of it is the kind that can be done with even an el cheapo camera. the author will also have you using tape, glue, spraypaint, and maybe a few things you never thought of as art supplies before. this is the kind of journaling that begs you to jump in and get messy.
if you do any kind of visual journaling, i highly recommend these cards and workbook.
So Much Fun.......2007-08-05
I got this after much thought. I figured it was just another "how to do a journal book". But, I found it to be much fun to do the exersizes and if you are an artist with a block, this will help to unblock you. It can give you ideas you never really thought of before on approaching your art work. Plus, as I said, it is a lot of fun to do the exersizes suggested on the individual cards. The kit also includes a fun little notebook/journal book to do as you please with. If you teach art, these are also fun ideas to inspire your students. I plan on doing that with my students this Fall.
This is a Gem.......2007-07-26
First of all, this will make a perfect gift for anyone crafty or involved in journaling, scrapbooking, altered books, ATCs, etc. It's a very affordable gift that keeps on giving.
The author opens your eyes to new ways to be creative in a way anyone, whether an "artist" or not, can use everyday observations to create real, unique, personal, fun, journal pages. She'll encourage you to take in all your surroundings and find a common element - she was able to find the common element while sitting in an Italian restaurant and watching war protesters: she, the waiter, the protesters were all waiting, caught up in a moment in time which was the theme she used for one one of her journal pages. She uses paint, photography and any object that she can use to express herself in her work -and makes no apologies. I LOVE this little gem. Just lovely and real. You won't be disappointed.
Great things come in little boxed sets..........2007-07-04
I noticed that there was a 1 star review of "Wide Open...". No offense, reviewer, but clearly you don't have a clue. Yes, the cards in the set are sort of vague -- if you are looking for step-by-step instructions for making something, don't waste your money on this. And, yes, you do need to own... and have some very basic knowledge of... art supplies (again, no offense, but if you've been within spitting distance of an art supply or craft store, then you'll know what gesso is).
[Ok, stepping off my soap box and done with the snarky comments.] Randi Feuerhelm-Watts is such an inspiration! I love her style and the ideas for inspiration that she presents on the cards go way beyond some of the tired, old suggestions that seem to always crop up in art/craft publications.
I read all the cards in one sitting (because I'm obsessive like that!) and I did notice that some of them related to each other. Not that they are dependent on each other or that you would be lost if you pick them at random... but I did observe some links between the individual ideas. I think this is great for continuing themes in your art work. Also, while she references photography quite a bit (she is a photographer after all), I definitely do not feel that any of the ideas are pigeonholed by the techniques. The author's basic ideas translate really well no matter what kind of visual artwork you might do.
The cards themselves each feature snippets of the author's artwork on the back. This alone is incredibly inspirational. You almost get double the bang for your buck - pull out one of the cards to interpret the visual side and then come back to it later for inspiration from the narrative side.
My only complaint would be about the Creativity Notebook... I wouldn't really call it a complaint, persay. I guess I'm just ambivalent about it's inclusion in the set. On one hand she has provided some great backgrounds to help you combat "white page syndrome" as well as some random instructions to offer a jump start to someone who is new to visual journaling. But on the other hand, I don't see myself personally using it since I already have half a dozen journals and prefer to make my own backgrounds (once you get on a roll, its half the fun).
The ideas and techniques are presented in Randi's conversational style, along with her great little stories. While I have not had the pleasure of taking a class with her or meeting her, she comes across as the kind of person you'd love to have as an art friend because she'd always be inspiring and challenging. I think that's the greatest thing about this kit... she's managed to package a ton of her personality and a lot of what I imagine she teaches in her workshops into one cool product. This set definitely gets a front row spot on my art-bookshelf.
Book Description
Linda McCartneys photographs of quiet moments reveal her innate sense of composition. These images, such as Through a Glass Teapot, add to McCartneys inspirational legacy. The expert way the lens catches a cactus flower or a view of hills transports us into moments of utter serenity and makes apparent the mastery of her technique, which she cultivated by years of work. A wide variety of processes, from photogravure still lifes to Polaroid transfers, showcases McCartneys love of experimentation. Her photographs evoke a sense of a world wide open, as the collection is aptly titled. Her artistic expertise and ability to capture a sense of freedom make these photographs endlessly enchanting and fascinating. Linda McCartney took photographs for more than thirty years. Her work has been exhibited at the ICP, New York; the Royal Photographic Society, Bath; The U.K.s National Museum of Photography, Film Television, Bradford, England; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Previous books of her works and photographs include Linda McCartneys Sixties and Roadworks. Additionally, she is the author of Linda on Tour: Over 200 Meat-Free Dishes from Around the World. Her photography could be disarmingly earthy Her eye was definitely precise. New York Times
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking.......2000-08-28
I found this book an inspiration. Not surprising since I have always been inspired by Linda's pictures, but I now have a collection of moving moments that she has caught on film. As an amateur photographer I am now inspired to experiment with the medium. I now keep my camera handy where ever I am.
Intense beauty in fleeting moments.......2000-04-10
She was, indeed, one of the best photographers of her generation. There is a terrific sense of reverence for the natural world in these photos, in which she demonstrates that nature provides the most satisfying, serene, and dramatic of images, if you look for them. And you need not travel to the Grand Canyon or the redwood forests to see them--looking out your back door, out the plane window, in your garden, across the beach, or through the glass teapot on your table, may yield views as delicate and mysterious as the old masters. Of her photographs of people, John Lennon said "She has an eye for an eye." Of her photos of nature, we can say that she had an eye for the most intense beauty in the most fleeting of moments.
I was very disappointed--.......1999-08-08
First I thought it should be called Wide Range because of all Linda's varied interests but as I looked through it, which took all of l0 minutes to review, I was very disappointed in it. The pictures were too simple and looked like a child's first attempt at photography. I am a staunch Linda McCartney fan of her photography and share in her many interests, but felt let down by this book of simplicity.
Wide Open is a treasure!.......1999-03-18
Just received my copy of "Wide Open" today. Linda McCartney was a wonderful photographer and should be remembered as such. "Wide Open" is a keepsake that I will pass down to my children. The photographs seem to show a calm serenity and you are left wanting more.

Unrequitted love personified!.......2005-12-05
What's the best cure for loneliness? Can prejudgment be the barometer to allow discernment a better part of a first impression? How do two people come to terms with trustworthiness? These are the questions that author Doris Johnson brings to life in this story depicting Thirty-one year old David Blackshear and Margo Sterling who are jockeying for position with each other in matters of the heart. The author introduces David albeit, rather tediously in the beginning as she attempts to set the stage in telling his story. It gets better though, as she manages to balance prologue, the middle passage and epilog as the storyline finally paints the picture for the colors to make this tale blend. The missing element in David's life harkens back to the woman who has haunted him for the last five years. Questions abound akin to the opening queries that are main ingredients to this story. As I read the book, I continually marveled at how the author kept me in suspense in spite of my mind racing ahead to ponder results contemplated as I tried to anticipate the next move! David and Margo allowed their jaded views of each other hang perpetually enough to give me a sense of urgency parallel to the plot. I kept asking myself: Will they be able to move beyond their distrust and explore the attraction and desires flowing between them?
HELLO AGAIN is a good story. Read the story of two people coming to terms with life after allowing second-guessing and mistrust to undermine the need to put one step forward. The regret of the past is the theme most stressed here to illustrate why two unwilling people will only allow time a measurable ally to finally staunch the angst that has periled them. Misplaced drama and much emotional danger have almost destroyed them.
It's been quite some time between her last novel and I for one have waited patiently for this author to step up to the plate again. Doris Johnson takes readers to the limits that are warranted without overstepping boundaries that has always given her leeway to write like the seasoned veteran she is. There was much intrigue and anticipation as the story reached its zenith. When fear is precedent against wanton desire, oftentimes unexpected circumstance will dictate the outcome. The characters in this story, along with time and place give it a flavor commensurate with an appetite for readers to expect more from Ms Johnson. Here's hoping that more is in store and we won't have to wait so long! This is a good read as it commanded a rate of 4 out of 5 stars from me.
Seductive & Intense! .......2005-09-01
On the immaculately designed cover of Hello Again by Doris Johnson there are seven words that stand out boldly and assured that catch the readers attention immediately: "Sometimes a second look leads to love..." With that in mind, we know that we're not about to witness the tired boy-meets-girl, girl-goes-gaga-over-the-guy scenario, but rather a more subtle approach to the contemporary romance novel.
Hello Again begins rather slowly, with gradual crescendos leading to poignant climaxes throughout. In fact I thought - after having read the first chapter - that I would put the book down and let it gather dust on my literary armoire. Johnson starts her novel with an ample amount of back-story which often leaves the reader unamused and wondering whether the $6.99 ($9.99 for Canadians) plus sales tax was actually worth the expenditure. A lot of back-story which, frankly, I could have done without. Perhaps the author thought it best to slowly reel in the reader for the ensuing drama to come. I did not.
But indeed the following chapter makes my hypothesis correct. After having witnessed chapter one's tedious lull, chapter two shines like the sun bouncing off the water. Here Johnson lets her skill whet the readers' appetites, letting it splash just a bit, though thoroughly towel worthy. Here is where I realized that this is a novel that is surely worth the read!
[pg. 22]
"Come, live in the world you deserve."
The sultry voice of the female commentator faded as did the commercial, with the beautiful model gazing up at the man of her dreams basking in his appreciation of the scent of her, as if her skin was the elixir personified.
---
At this point we are introduced to the star of the novel, Margo Sterling. Johnson swiftly and very adeptly takes us on the adventure of high-price living and first-rate romance co-starring David Blackshear who had previously become an instant multimillionaire. After winning the New York State Lottery Mr. Blackshear has become a well-known target in his various business dealings and his philanthropy endeavors. So much so in fact that he becomes jaded - suspicious even - of women whom may or may not be attracted to his dollars, rather than the man beyond the money.
Enter Margo Sterling: who incidentally is not unused to being successful in her own right. She blows David off, taking her career frustrations out on the man who is to become her partner. To say that this meeting was love at first slight (pun intended) for David would be an understatement. And this is where Johnson shows us just how bright her authoring ability shines with this story of love lost, meticulous dedication & love found anew.
[pg. 125]
Driving on the Belt toward Queens, David was somber...
Man you're messing up as bad as Mrs. O'leary's cow. The great fire of Chicago started by that bovine was nothing compared to the fire in his belly when it came to Margo Sterling...
"Employer, employee, be damned," he muttered.
---
While there are certain adages that briefly come to mind when describing this novel - money talks & bullsh*t walks among others - don't judge a book by its cover is clearly not one of these. And like the cover of Hello Again - this novel is not lacking in the beauty department. Whether it be the language or the saucy-descriptive love scenes or the shop-talk about cycling and advertising, one can be assured that Hello Again is one classy novel with the sophisticated cover to match.

Overcoming a first impression..........2005-08-14
Life has changed drastically for David Blackshear since he won the lottery and enough money to live out all his dreams. One of the biggest changes is his inherent distrust that women are more interested in his money than him.
Months before the start of his tale in "Hello Again", David came across Margo Sterling who capture his full attention. Having met Margo on one of the most challenging days of her life and career, David - who is moonlighting as a bag handler at the train station - takes her brush off as her disdain for attention from a "blue-collar" worker. Despite his first impression that she is a gold digger, David simply can't get Margo off his mind.
This interesting tale takes off as Margo and David come face-to-face again as David seeks help promoting his bicycle business from the promotional whiz behind many campaigns he has admired - this expert is by chance Margo.
Margo and David's bumbling attempts at exploring their mutual attraction face many blows due to David's hesitance about her potential "money-seeking" character and Margo's personal demons as well.
This tale carries a bit of mystery, in addition to fairly captivating romance.
Lottery for love.......2005-02-05
Thirty-one year old David Blackshear won the lottery, collected
millions and bought every material thing his heart desired
before he came to his senses. Now, on his thirty-sixth birthday,
even though he has several prominent business ventures, David
realizes something is missing in his life; he is a lonely man. His
loneliness makes him remember a five-foot-six body, dark flashing
eyes, and the whiff of summer breeze tantalizing his nostrils. But
he also remembers her look of disdain because she thought he was
just a blue-collar worker. That one look stopped him cold and
cemented his belief that women are materialistic gold diggers. But
he still cannot forget her face.
Margo Sterling had one of the worst days of her career. A friend
and confidant stole her advertising idea and with it he landed a
lucrative contract with another agency. That was the day David,
posing as an Amtrak bag handler, decided to flirt with her. But
that was not the day to flirt with Margo, she did not even want
to look at a man.
Needing a tight new ad campaign for one of his companies, David
hires an advertising firm and specifically requests the person
behind a commercial he liked. He is shocked when he comes face
to face with the woman who has haunted him for the last five
years, Margo Sterling. Margo is also shocked to learn David is
the man behind the successful company. But why did he hire her?
Is he just another man with an ulterior motive? In spite of their
jaded views about the opposite sex will they be able to move
beyond their distrust and explore the emotions flowing between
them?
HELLO AGAIN is the story of two people coming to terms with life
after much drama and much danger has almost destroyed them. David
and Margo have regrets about past actions but are still hesitant
about trusting again. Doris Johnson takes readers to the limit;
she shares the extremes to which people will go when fear rules
the heart. Realistically told, she shares the good, the bad and
the ugly of feeling too much too soon. This is an entertaining
read. (RAW Rating: 4.5)

Lapidary short stories.......2006-06-03
Each of these short stories is a polished gem. Fox writes with empathy and humor.
Tough Stories.......2006-05-09
I enjoyed the short stories by Martin Fox immensely. They have all the grit of big city life. His dialogue rings reminiscent of Raymond Chandler. The grist of the stories range in depth to all kinds of creative scenarios, everything from basketball to working over a trust fund.
I would recommend these stories to everyone who likes a good fast paced read. Mr. Fox captures a real sense of our everyday emotions from greed to honor.

Book Description
William is finding out that his past may not be buried as deep as he once thought. In fact, a colorful character from his past has just crawled out of the ground and is refusing to leave until William changes his ways. Hello, Again is the tale of a drunken fisherman, an unfaithful fiance, and a guilt ridden apartment manager, whose lives intersect with unsuspecting and dangerous consequences.
Customer Reviews:
THE COST OF A HEAVY CONSCIENCE?.......2005-04-29
What is the cost of a heavy conscience? William is about to find out in a very sudden and powerful way. William has a lot of guilt on his head. Some of it warranted and some not. Years ago he and his friends pulled what they thought was going to be an innocent prank on a drunken fisherman down by the docks. They untied his boat and let it drift away...and the fisherman was never heard from again. Now as an adult he's not making life any easier on himself. He's sleeping with Delia, the wife of his best friend, Aaron. And he also feels the guilt, although misplaced, over his parent's breakup when he was just a child after finding his father having sex with the babysitter.
Then one day his conscience crawls out of a hole in the ground for a little retribution in the form of the very same fisherman. People think William is nuts as he argues with the man since he is the only one who can see him. William tries to run, but you can't run from your conscience. William's past sins hit him full in the face and when he cannot dispel this phantom fisherman, he does the only thing he can do...the right thing and finally confronts his demons. Only this will clear the weight from his soldiers and send the fisherman back the hole.
You never know what you're going to get when you open a book from Top Shelf which to me makes them one of the more intriguing comic publishers today. They are so outside the box and doing edgier, non-traditional type things and giving writers and artists a forum that they otherwise may not have. Maz Extes isn't a great artist but his impressionistic style is well-suited to the story he tells in "Hello Again" He communicates a genuine sense of sincerity and pain with William and the fisherman and you feel a great deal of sympathy for William by the end of the story. Very well-done little graphic novel.

Book Description
What if we got it right from the very beginning? What if humans in Paradise set out to write and live a mythology that encouraged them to access their fully developed selves instead of insisting that they be repulsed and terrorized by their potential? Then we would not have the story of Adam & Eve. We would have the story of Jensy-Matti and John-Leupold: a couple of prototypical humans for this dawning Age of Paradox, living in the post-identity Adrianic humanity.
Customer Reviews:
Dick and Jane for a new millennium.......2001-05-17
Buy this book for every child in your elementary school, and then have the children teach this book to their parents. You will raise decent and celebrant human beings who are ready to engage life rather than be repulsed by those who are complex or different. This reminds me of a Flirtations song: "I will sing you a story no one sang to me; let it keep you in good company."
What a graduation present.......2000-10-28
I dream of the day when this book will replace "Dick and Jane" in the primary schools. Until then, I hope you give it as a present to every friend or loved one graduating from high school or college. It shows what human existence could be like if we lived it with courage and imagination. It would be like not anything we had ever known. Humorous and sincerely hopeful at the same time. It's bound to be at the top of the American Library Association's list of most challenged books, as it cleverly challenges our most cherished truths.
