Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse........2007-09-23
Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse. Has all the details to help you start or clean-up an operation and help it run like a well oiled machine.
This is a must...........2006-10-30
This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.
It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.
I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .
Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.
Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03
This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.
Book Description
Drawn from the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Color & Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics, 1950-2000 accompanies a major touring exhibition on the history of ceramic art in the second half of the twentieth century. Illustrated with more than 250 color photographs, Color & Fire explores the roles of key artists and the major stylistic movements they developed during the decades of pioneering innovation.
Based on the premise that the history of studio ceramics can be regarded as a series of breakthroughs or milestones, Color & Fire highlights the moments when talented artists came together to produce work in clay that challenged traditions and promoted aesthetic freedom. In the early years of the twentieth century, pottery was primarily mass-produced in factories, where specialists in wheel throwing, glazing, and kiln firing worked under a system of divided labor. In the 1930s and 1940s, ceramists such as the renowned team of Gertrud and Otto Natzler began to perform all of these exacting functions-from mixing clay to firing kilns-in their own studios, creating one-of-a-kind pots, breathtaking in design and construction. Since that time, ceramic art has followed a metaphorical journey from the earth to the air, as concerns with utility, materials, and techniques have given way to abstract conceptual considerations.
In Los Angeles in the 1950s, Peter Voulkos and his students upset the traditional values of craft pottery and the Bauhaus- inspired "form follows function" doctrine by creating nonfunctional, oversized, off-kilter vessels with cracks and holes, along with massive Abstract Expressionist monuments. In the 1960s in northern California, Robert Arneson and his students shattered taboos against clay as a sculptural medium in the oversized, off-kilter vessels with cracks and holes, along with massive Abstract Expressionist monuments. In the 1960s in northern California, Robert Arneson and his students shattered taboos against clay as a sculptural medium in the hands of potters with their radical, irreverent, and satirical "Funk" pieces. Today, no longer confined to the decorative arts or other craft categories, ceramic artists around the world explore an unlimited range of influences, styles, and ideas, engaging in a graceful and inventive dialogue with centuries of ceramic tradition.
A celebration as well as a valuable art-historical survey, Color & Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics, 1950-2000 showcases the finest works form the unparalleled collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Accessible to the novice as well as to the enthusiast, the book includes essays by Grechen Adkins, Garth Clark, Jo Lauria, Rebecca Niederlander, Susan Peterson, and Peter Selz.

Book Description
American folk art and decorative arts from the early years of the Republic are telling indicators of family traditions, aesthetic values, and household customs of the young nation. Showing us how creative and consumer cultures from the old world were transformed in the new, Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence presents more than two hundred examples of American folk art and decorative arts created in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia in the 18th and 19th centuries. Drawn from the extraordinary Jane Katcher Collection, the book features familiar expressions of American folk art—portraits and carvings, quilts and needlework, weathervanes and whirligigs, family records and calligraphy, ceramics, furniture, baskets, and toys—as well as the unexpected—valentines, friendship albums, and keepsakes woven from the hair of loved ones.
A distinguished group of scholars discuss these objects within the context of historical, economic, and social issues as well as aesthetics.. There are also explorations of craft methods and artistic strategies practiced by the artists and artisans represented in the collection. Separate essays on the Shaker and the Pennsylvania-German communities concentrate on the unique features of their material cultures and their religious and social orientations.
With more than 100 previously unpublished works, this generously illustrated book is essential for anyone interested in American folk art or decorative arts.

EXPRESSIONS OF INNOCENCE AND ELOQUENCE: SELECTIONs From the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana was given as a gift. Recepient was delighted. Especially interesting was how Jane Katcher began her collection and her descriptions of the treasures.
a fascinating book.......2007-02-23
I read the book cover to cover immediately and was totally engaged. To miss the beauty and joy in these examples of folk art is impossible.
An elegant catalogue of an important collection of Americana.......2007-02-22
The book is a delight to look at but more importantly it is an essential reference catalogue of the Katcher collection.
Expressions of Innocence & Eloquence.......2007-01-15
A beautiful book for the Folk Art enthusiast! Photography is fantastic and includes so many items that have not been published before. Wonderful!
Expressions of Innocence and Eloquence: Selections from the Jane Katcher Collection of Americana.......2007-01-09
Well produced book with excellent photography. The essays by noted folk art experts was a great concept however they were primarily geared towards historical context and overall presentation of photographed works in the book.
A better format would have been these same individuals critiquing the relative merits of the pieces -- their strengths and their weaknesses, thus defining clearer for the reader how to assess the overall merits and quality of differing pieces within a sub-group -- in effect, their eyes educating the reader in the details and nuances of good folk art.

Book Description
This selection of art since 1990 is drawn from a collection of approximately 600 works that reflect various directions emerging in today's art, from fascinating reprises of tradition to phenomena that appear startlingly new. The focus is on particular works of art rather than representations of a movement or direction. However, certain trends can be identified: a theme of whimsy, the prominence of photographically-based work, the equal importance of figuration and abstraction.
Fifty-four artists are represented, among them Fatimah Tuggar (Nigeria), Neo Rauch (Germany), Mike Kelley (U.S.), Marlene Dumas (South Africa), and Vik Muniz (Brazil).
Neuberger Berman has a history with contemporary art reaching back over sixty years. Roy Neuberger went to Paris in the 1920s with the thought of becoming an artist; he returned home and founded the financial management company in order to earn the money necessary to fulfill his passion for collecting.

The Sole Published Collection of Douglas Letters.......2006-06-09
This is the only collection of Douglas letters that I am aware of that has been published. Especially important is that the collection was assembled and annotated by Professor Melvin Urofsky, who has consistently done such an outstanding job in publishing seven volumes of the correspondence of Justices Louis D. Brandeis, as well as numerous important studies relating to the Supreme Court and its history. He has also played a critical role in the publications program at the Supreme Court Historical Society. The book is organized as follows: Urofsky's introduction; followed by a section on WOD as Justice, consisting of a chapter dealing with Supreme Court Procedures; an entire chapter devoted to Felix Frankfurter and his relationship with WOD; another chapter on other of "the brethren" ranging from Stone through Rehnquist; and rights and civil liberties decisions. The second section focuses upon WOD's public activities, followed by a section relating to his private life. Finally, some letters are included relating to possible impeachment and Douglas' final years on the Court. As usual, Urofsky has added helpful annotations to most letters to clarify their context. The book runs about 430 pages. Originally published in 1987, when Douglas (1898-1980)was still somewhat a contemporary figure, the collection reminds us of how significant a figure WOD was in American politics and law for nearly half-a-century. It is a fitting memorial to him.
Useful collection of Douglas's correspondence.......2005-02-12
For much of his 36-year tenure on the Supreme Court, William O. Douglas was a public figure of controversy. A prolific author, fervent environmentalist, and world traveler, he maintained an active correspondence with an enormous range of people. Edited by Melvin Urofsky, The Douglas Letters offers a sampling of the letters from the Douglas papers, giving readers a window into the life and career of one of the most interesting people ever to occupy our nation's highest bench.
In presenting the letters Urofsky organizes them thematically rather than chronologically, dividing them into five parts based on aspects of Douglas's life: his pre-Court career, his Court-related correspondence, his public life outside the Court, his family, and the letters written during his final years. While this allows the reader to easily locate particular topics of interest, it diminishes its ability to convey the pattern and flavor of Douglas's everyday life. The result is a book that is useful as a reference work but limited in its ability to provide broader insights into this remarkable figure.

Book Description
Inspired by the discovery and excavation of ancient Roman treasures, patrons, artists, and scholars from the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries strove to recreate the legendary greatness of classical Rome in paintings, sculptures, and on paper. The Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College's collections are rich in such representations imparting the spirit of the architecture, mythology, and antiquities of the Eternal City. This illustrated catalogue considers a selection of vivid and imaginative Renaissance and Enlightenment artistic and intellectual interpretations of Rome's classical monuments and antiquities in the context of the city's cultural, political, and social history. In the tradition of sophisticated curatorial thinking at the Hood, the thematic grouping of the pieces suggests a highly nuanced approach to issues of place, memory, status, iconography, aesthetics, and historical imagination. Essays by T. Barton Thurber, "Survival and Revival of the Classical Tradition: Antiquity in Rome from the Baroque Era to the Age of Enlightenment", and Adrian W. B. Randolph, "How Great Rome Was the Ruins Teach': Antiquity in Renaissance Rome", provide general overviews of the circumstances inspiring the featured representations of Rome. Introduction by Derrick R. Cartwright; bibliography.
